In all the tutorials I’ve watched, nobody has ever explained how to bring up the bobbin thread. You’re a great teacher. Also having Jenny as your guest was genius. I loved seeing her make the same mistakes that I make and then you explain what’s going on. Thank you for this video!
Rob, from starting with sewing machine repair to quilting yourself, you really landed in the right place in life! Wonderful teacher, you share all that skill and make it such fun. You cannot retire...ever.
thank you both from the bottom of my heart..you have inspired this old girl to give this a try..I have only been quilting 2 years and although have wanted to try this ..I have been way to scared to ...thank you for the encouragement ...and all the tips ..and really for all the quilting tutorials without them ..I would not have come on this wonderful journey of quilting
Thank you for your enthusiastic, detailed, informational instruction. I followed several of your videos to make my first quilt. The free motion quilting (after a couple hours of practice) worked like a charm. Many thanks.
This is the most detailed version of teaching someone anything. You put into words a technical demonstration unlike just sewing something on camera. Love the interrelationship of body mechanics and cognition from another with bonified A.D.D.
You guys are great together. I've followed Jenny for many years, but you just came across my feed, and I'm so glad that you did. Know I can say 2 of my favorite instructors. You both have so much personality and put the fun in learning. Thank you both for the great video.
I love this video because I am like Jenny. Have made many quilts but not done FMQ. Jenny is, however, the fastest sew-er I have ever seen. I watch her videos and can’t believe she sews neat 1/4” seams as fast as she does. Amazing!
Ahhhh! best video! So cool to see that even seasoned quilters can be intimidated by something new. Thank you so much for sharing! Big fan of Jenny! You rock!
I'm astonished that there are any "dislikes" on this video! Perhaps they are from people who wanted something more advanced. Rob, I thought this was an EXCEPTIONAL video, extremely helpful, both for the technical elements and the psychological ones. I am a "pre-beginner" as Jenny calls it and every single thing you mentioned was important for me to hear. Jenny is always so natural and honest, gotta love her! She is a wonderful partner for you here. Thank you very much for this. You have REALLY helped me and I'll be watching the rest of your FMQ videos as well.
I liked watching you all do this stitching on your machine and that technique is one I have to learn by doing it once I have all the accessories and material I need to do such work. Thanks for much for showing us all this and Jenny must have enjoyed using this form of free motion quilting.
That was so helpful, all of it. Lots of good problems came up so solutions & corrections were provided on the spot - the best teaching practices are those that provide hands-on and immediate feedback. The comments on confidence & comparisons to others were just as useful as the activity. More like this please. Thank you for a great tutorial!
Another awesome video...really helpful as well to have a "guinea pig" that your teaching in person! Somehow, having that student in studio with you makes it a little more relatable and real. Thanks again!
Jenny and Rob -- I can't think of two better people to work together on a video. Your fun, energetic personalities just mesh together which makes for a very enjoyable tutorial. You two are great together (and also separately, too). I'm subscribed to both your channels for sure!
Another good way to practice FMQ is to use a blank piece of paper and no thread in your machine. Or you can draw a design on the paper and practice following the drawn lines. It saves on thread plus saves on having to put together a quilt sandwich. Great tutorial with 2 of my fav teachers!
I want to thank the two of you for making this fun and helpful video. I've watched both of you for several months. I've made quilt tops, made the quilt sandwiches and basted them but I've been too scared to actually start quilting. This has given me the confidence to take that first step.Once again THANKS to you both.
I'm so excited. I finished two small quilting projects only sewing in lines though. But I still consider that a win! I am having trouble doing the free motion as I can't use a foot peddle so have to use the button on the machine (I'd appreciate any tips). But now I've actually got started I'll keep practising.
Rob and Jenny, this was awesome!! I am a good, having sewn all my clothes for about 20 years but I have never quilted. Or pieced. Much less done FMQ! Now I really don't know - but I imagine Jenny is at least as good as I am - and watching her start gave me hope. I am just waiting for the new stimulus check - part of it will help me get started - and then I am going to do my first quilt. And typical me it will be a new Queen bed covering! And I will be going through Rob's library of videos between now and then! Thank you both!!
I love this video. It covered so many things that I think a feel and questions I have as a beginning quilter. You two are so fun to watch and please do it again!!!!
You two make a great sewing pair. Great work Jenny. I know how you feel. I quilted a few of my own and if there was a quilt police I would be in jail with no chance of parole. But then the more I looked at it the better I felt about it. I did it free motion and I got to thinking I love this quilt and am proud of it because I did everything on it myself including the quilting. Thank you Rob and Jenny for that great video!
O. M. G. This one is great too - watching Jenny is like watching my own fmq stitching....and she nails it when she mentioned how we compare ourselves to others. So glad I found these!! I'm tagging them to my library so I can quickly refer to them - and yes, I've subscribed :-) Thank you!!!
Thanks to you and Jenny for showing us what a beginner at FMQ 'suffers'. I am a beginner and have experienced exactly the same problems as Jenny, so it's nice to know that it isn't just me!
I learn so much each day from this marvelous lady .Thank you Jenny for making my crazy world so much easier to live in .I do love to sew and now I can begin my challenge the necktie quilt .It is beautiful .I will learn this quilting technique
How wonderfull to have both of you working together. I been following both of you and learned a lot so far. You two are great teachers. It is easy to follow your instructions because you use simple and common languaje. Thanks for this tutorial. I have done several proyects so far, but still learning skills to add different mottif to my projects. I will try with circules and pebbles now that your demo seams to be easy to follow. Thanks again for your great job. Love to see the passion for sewing in both of you. GB
You two are so much fun together. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for teaching me how to quilt. My husband teases me when I watch by saying that I'm watching the 24 hour quilting channel. That's ok. He watches the 24 hour fishing channel.
I’m enjoying this video so much your interaction is answering a lot of my questions, and mainly showing me I’m way to critical of my work. Guess that comes from being an artist I want my first works to be great. One thing I noticed with Jenny doing the first time motion quilting is, her knowledge as a sewer seemed to make it easier almost natural to her. Thanks for this video Rob.
What a great video! I know how Jenny feels about being 'worn out'. I've done a few quilts doing FMQ and it does tire me out. I think I do a lot of what you're talking about when you say that we compare to others. I have to constantly remind myself that this is my project and if it's not perfect, neither am I. I love it though even though it tires me out. It so satisfying to doodle to my heart's content!
great tutorial! I'm glad you had Jenny on to be your student. It really helped to show some of the things that of very new person to machine quilting will have happen to them. I'm almost ready to start free motion quilting on the tops I've been working on. This gives me a little more confidence that I can actually do it!
The best FMQ video I have seen. Love that you have someone (Jenny) doing the practice and asking questions. Wish she was on here longer to ask more questions.
Super video!!! Thank you both so much for sharing and identifying with us scared chickens! My stitches are large, crossed, and uneven when I free motion quilt. Thank you Jenny for humbling yourself so I don't feel like a clutz and that I can keep trying to improve by practice, practice, practice (just like my piano teacher told me!)
I know that this video is old...but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for doing this video. I have been searching for an ultimate beginers guide as to how to start free motion quilter. This gave me a couple of tools to start and try doing this. I have been quilting for a couple of years...but I really wanted to start to add this extra special touch to my quilts. Thank you for this. Off to my local quilt shop to pick up a few things...and give this a try!!!!
Jenny!!! I Love You & You are soooBrave to do this on Video!!! First Time!!! I Love Free Motion so much that I'll place my Bigger Quilt onto the Inspira Frame & then Free Motion it instead of using the Pentograms that come with the Machine. YouTwoare an Awesome Team!!
Rob I couldn't agree more! don't compare yourself to others! We are all different, and if we were all same what a boring thing that would be! Love your show and Jenny too 💟
Oh guys! I love you both so much! Jenny, you bite your lip, me too and I also GO IN APNEA while FMQ!!! It's so stressing. But I finally got to stipple in a "so-so" way. I'm trying other patterns but OMG, they are bad. So I rip and start all over. I have a hint about the tails you leave when you are at the start: instead of sitching once or twice on the same spot, just pull the bobbin thread, leave the tails alone until you are away from them, make a double knot and with a needle hide them in the batting. Doing this avoids the little knot you can see on the top and bottom. Jenny, let's keep learning with Rob.
This is a great video with so much information and (positive) advice! I wish I'd watched it before I quilted my first quilts - but that's ok. I learned a lot. It was a lot of fun meeting you at the Quilt Festival in Houston at the MSQC booth, Rob. Thanks for your help!
ROFL This was SO awesome. I am SO SO SO beginner at FMQ...Thanks to you both for this amaze balls video. Crazy informative, and helpful for we FMQ noobs. Seriously LOVE LOVE LOVE this video. I've already replayed it a few times now, lol.
Just finished free motion quilting my first twin sized quilt. I did it on a Singer talent. These videos took the mystery out of fmq thanks for the help.
For me when I am FMQ I always try to remember something that Jenny always says, "finished is better than perfect!" That concept is perfect for fmq! No one will ever be as close to your quilt as you are when you are fmqing it :)
I’m learning so much in this video! Thank you!!! I’ve followed her and now will follow him😊. I love hand quilting but needed to get quilts done faster. Have just machine quilted my first two quilts. I will get better with all these tips!
Oh this is fantastic! Hi, Rob! I watch Jenny so much I feel like I actually know her. She is so confident and sews fast in her videos ( I feel a little intimidated lol) It's good to know and see that she has to start somewhere to! If that makes sense! I really have learned so much from her about making great quilt blocks. For me, I make the quilt tops and then put them in a sandwich and then into a frame. My only experience quilting is stitch in the ditch. This is sooo very helpful and I'm glad to see a familiar face along with meeting a new face! I'm going to subscribe and watch all your videos. I have been wanting to machine quilt for a very long time. Thank you bunches for this!
I love this video. Especially what he says about not comparing yourself to other quilt artists You can be inspired but don't put yourself down because you don't quilt as good as someone else. The fact that we are different and quilt different that is what makes the work interesting. If we had 15 of the same quilt it would be pretty boring. Excellent tips and advice. Of course I'm 2 years late on this video. But I'm trying to get better at free motion quilting. I had one half day class and it was not enough. lol
This is an awesome video on free motion quilting, I’m just starting this technique & you have given me great instructions on different patterns & tricks of the trade, thank you..
Great video Jenny & Rob! Yes, it's uncomfortable trying something new, isn't it? We forget what it was like when we first learned to tie our shoelaces, or ride a bike, or write our names when we were kids... but we did it. And the more times we did it, the better we got at it. Same concept. I have finished two whole quilts so far, despite "fabric acquisitioning" since 2012. But those two quilts, I quilted myself on my very old domestic machine with no extension table. So I had loads of tension issues. But when I gifted them to my niece and the second to my nephew, all they were was delighted I had made them their very own quilts. All I did was wavy lines on a jelly roll "race" quilt ("jelly roll walk" was more like it for this slow-sewist), with triple wavy lines of quilting in the border. But my university graduate niece was SO impressed! And on the second one, solid squares of black and green to make a "Minecraft Creeper" quilt all I did was straight lines, with some hand quilting with contrasting pearl cotton in the centre where my machine just could not reach due to its tiny throat space. It looks cool. My 9-year old nephew adores it, it has pride of place on his bed. That reaction is so motivating to do more quilting, and no one is pointing out what I could've done better. Practice makes better, so I will keep on doing more FMQ. Thanks for posting this video with hints and tips, it helps! ~Diana from Toronto
Hi Diana! Like you said, free motion quilting takes a lot of practice, but it sounds like you are off to a fantastic start! I hope you have fun free motion quilting up a storm! Feel free to share a picture with me on my Man Sewing Facebook page!
2 1/2 years ago I had finished a quilt top for my first grandchild, I took an all day FMQ workshop with Pat LaPierre (of Supreme Slider fame), made tons of quilt sandwiches, and practiced for weeks. I was terrified to go to my quilt top for fear of ruining it. I watched a few of your videos on FMQ, and practiced designs from your free downloads. My rainbow colors quilt with the Rainbows Gone Wild quilting turned out AWESOME! You totally gave me confidence to keep on quilting. Thank you! Trying to get tickets to your Trunk Show in Mesa! Patti Alquist
Love this video. Thank you. And love the advice that comparing ourselves to other artists is unhealthy. I couldn't agree more. You're spot on when it comes to being inspired by others but not self-critical because of comparisons. Subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.
LOVE this video! Thanks Rob and Jenny. My fmq lacks consistency of size in the stitches. Like Jenny, I find that when I start off my stitches are too big. After I've been quilting for a while I start to rush and they get too small. Love the idea of getting an hour better - I am going to prepare some smaller sandwiches from scraps to practise a little every day! xx
Oh Wow! 2 of my favorite sewing people on the same chanel! How cool is that? LOL And doing something I am trying to learn! You guys are awesome and what a perfect way to show how to go through this. Thank you so very much for posting this!!! :) I learned so much and will be using it very soon!
Oh my! Thank you so much for this video! I will be sending a slew of people to this one. You answer all the fears about free motion quilting. Most the time its the fears and the concern with being perfect. Heck I have gotten second place ribbons on my quilts with imperfect quilting at the local fair. Quilting does not have to be perfect. It just has to be itself.
Thank you Rob had your video on today free motion very slow but I think I did good you explained it so well yesterday I broke needle jammed machine Thank you thank you thank you
I'm like you Jenny, straight lines, but now I'm going to re-watch Rob's video on free motion and take time practicing. It reminds me of hand quilting, whereby you have warm up on a muslin sandwich, and then onto your project. I would say also a big thing would be to have good posture, but be RELAXED. It may help to have a magnifying lens on the machine so you can see your stitches better without leaning forward. Rob your a great teacher!
In all the tutorials I’ve watched, nobody has ever explained how to bring up the bobbin thread. You’re a great teacher. Also having Jenny as your guest was genius. I loved seeing her make the same mistakes that I make and then you explain what’s going on. Thank you for this video!

It is wonderful to see the interaction between you two. You are an awesome instructor. Thank you for all your tutorials.
Great combination of a good teacher and a good student who asks lots of questions. This is an excellent and encouraging tutorial!
Thank you for tuning in, drnili! I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial! Have fun free motion quilting!
everyone goes straight to sewing I want to know how to prepare the quilt
I liked watching you all do this stitching on your machine and that technique is one I have to learn by doing it once I have all the accessories and material I need to do such work. Thanks for much for showing us all this and Jenny must have enjoyed using this form of free motion quilting.

Would love to see more videos in this format, even longer ones. I enjoyed watching this and I learned a great deal. Thank you.

Rob and Jenny...love your work...will actually grit my teeth and attempt this tomorrow. Thank you both!
Great idea, Liz! i'll have to give it a try!
Great idea, Liz. I was a tad concerned at wasting so much fabric and batting while I learn FMQ.
I like that it would really save on batting and material :)
thank you liz i am just a beginner in this and that is a great suggestion I will try that :-)
Does using paper to practice dull the needle?
I want to thank the two of you for making this fun and helpful video. I've watched both of you for several months. I've made quilt tops, made the quilt sandwiches and basted them but I've been too scared to actually start quilting. This has given me the confidence to take that first step.Once again THANKS to you both.
You can do it, Sharon! Just have fun with it!
I'm so excited. I finished two small quilting projects only sewing in lines though. But I still consider that a win! You two are a riot! Helps me realize how much I tense up when I am practicing free hand.

OMG Bringing up the threadfrom the bottom trick is awesome! I have been sewing since I was little and no one has ever taught that to me! You rock!
I'm always happy to help, Dawn! :) Have fun sewing!
I love this video. It covered so many things that I think a feel and questions I have as a beginning quilter. You two are so fun to watch and please do it again!!!!
Thanks for watching, Bonnie! I hope you have lots of fun free motion quilting!
Rob you're a great teacher!!! I am learning to quilt and these videos are helping so much!!

My husband teases me when I watch by saying that I'm watching the 24 hour quilting channel. That's ok. He watches the 24 hour fishing channel.
Hey, it's great to have it available 24/7 isn't it? Glad you enjoyed this one!

You'll have to let me know how it goes for you!
Practice is right, Lois! You'll get better with time!
Thank you for explaining and demonstrating the free motion quilting. you have both answered my 'why does this happen?' questions.
I know that this video is old...but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for doing this video. I have been searching for an ultimate beginers guide as to how to start free motion quilter. i am new to this craft and this video on FMQ is the most useful i have watched . it makes me want to try it .
Absolutely brilliant video...!!! Well done Jenny. You asked all the questions I have been wanting to know the answers too.
Two of my favorite youtube teachers, together! Love them, love this! I think I have my courage up to try.
What a great and relieving video! You answered a lot of questions for me and took the pressure and fear out of fmq. A big thank you to you and Jenny.
I hope you give it a try now! :)
Yes I'll do. It was the kick I needed.
Great job, Jenny! Great teaching, Rob!
You and Jenny make a great teaching pair!
Thanks for a fun tutorial on free motion quilting. As a fellow left handed Jenny I am pleased you had a go at FMQ.
Love this! Adding you to my favorites Rob. Right up there with Jenny and Leah Day!
Thanks, Ashley! I'm honored!
Rob, you are adorable with Jenny. I am making my very first quilt and ready to start practicing my stitching
Rob I couldn't agree more! don't compare yourself to others! We are all different, and if we were all same what a boring thing that would be! Love your show and Jenny too 💟
I am so much like Jenny....I need boundaries. Hoping to learn my syn and rhythm. Thanks so much for this video!!
Oh guys! I love you both so much! Jenny, you bite your lip, me too and I also GO IN APNEA while FMQ!!! It's so stressing. But I finally got to stipple in a "so-so" way. I'm trying other patterns but OMG, they are bad. So I rip and start all over.

Love this. Rob, God has definitely blessed you with an ability to teach.

I love the fact that you had Jenny on here (a beginner) like me. I hope you have an update on her progress too!
We'll have to keep everyone updated!

Hace muchos años practico como hobby el patchwork, pero el quilteado es la última materia que no me animo a rendir.Hago acolchado recto.Esta clase de free motilón me dio ánimo, Un abrazo desde Argentina.
Hi Nan! Free motion quilting just takes time to learn and practice! Thanks for tuning into the Man Sewing tutorials! Have fun sewing!
Great video! I love watching you both. You give me the confidence to try FMQ. Keep up the good work!❤
GREAT JOB ROB!!!!!
THANK YOU JENNY!
Thank you! Trying to get tickets to your Trunk Show in Mesa! this was an awesome video. very kind educator you are .
Just found you today. You’re great. Such a good teacher. I tried with fmq a while ago and enjoyed it. Will have to try again
Y'all are just great. That's it. Just saying I love watching and learning with y'all.
Love this video. Thank you. And love the advice that comparing ourselves to other artists is unhealthy. I couldn't agree more. You're spot on when it comes to being inspired by others but not self-critical because of comparisons. Subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.
Jenny and Rob, I am getting back into sewing. Thanks
LOVE this video! Thanks Rob and Jenny. My fmq lacks consistency of size in the stitches. Like Jenny, I find that when I start off my stitches are too big. After I've been quilting for a while I start to rush and they get too small. Love the idea of getting an hour better - I am going to prepare some smaller sandwiches from scraps to practise a little every day! xx
Practice, practice, practice. You'll get into the rhythm eventually, Abigail! :)
I am left handed but cut right handed too. I knew I loved Jenny! This video has definitely helped me with my fears of free motion quilting
Thanks for the tutorial--it's the best I've seen with good explanation with the important details of what happens when . . .
Oh Wow! 2 of my favorite sewing people on the same chanel! How cool is that? LOL And doing something I am trying to learn! You guys are awesome and what a perfect way to show how to go through this. Thank you so very much for posting this!!! :) I learned so much and will be using it very soon!
Wow so glad I stumbled on to your channel!I adore Jenny!!Great tutorial I look forward to more!
nice video, thank you Jenny and Rob.
You're absolutely right, Kristal! It doesn't need to be perfect (in fact, most people will never notice if it's not). :)
Thank you Rob had your video on today free motion very slow but I think I did good you explained it so well yesterday I broke needle jammed machine Thank you thank you thank you
Awesome Video! It has given me confidence to practice free motion now.
Awesome video on FMQ. It is so intimidating! Muscle memory!
Thanks - make me want to head to the sewing machine. Learned a lot.
You two were great!
You are both awesome! Heck yeah!
I like this video so much, was fun watching Janney machine quilting. I'm a beginner machine quilter too.
That is very important as well, Linda! I hope you have fun with your FMQ!
Oh my god, this is a good video! I love Jenny, she is so cool! You guys were informative, and highly entertaining, thanks!
What a great video. Your technique is amazing
