I'm glad you mentioned practicing on a piece of paper before starting on the quilt. Even with a pantograph, it's been recommended to follow the pattern with a pencil before starting on the fabric. "muscle memory" can certainly improve the final project.

I just began practicing a few days ago on a scrap sandwich every day. I'm going to try your suggestion of pen and paper tomorrow. Thanks again! P.S. Thanks for this great video Fran, I did some free motion quilting a few years ago, but haven’t done it much lately. I think I’ll be giving it another try soon thanks to this great tutorial. My physiotherapist gave me a hint about keeping shoulders etc relaxed. Put a heat pack across your shoulders- once it is cool, it’s time to get up and move, stretch etc. I kept a couple in rotation.
Thank you, Fran, for the demo. I tried years ago, but it was a fail and I never got back to it. In my case I believe the machine just cannot work correctly (it's a little too basic a machine). But I'll give it a try again next time I do a quilt, using your helpful hints here.

I like to free motion quilt on my QAYG quilts since they are a block at a time. But since I have been following your quilting patterns I am afraid I can’t FMQ the whole quilt! thank you Fran for this tutorial. My problem is my lower stitches don't match up with the top stitches. It doesn't seem to matter at any speed. I don't knnow if it has to do with machine tension or if its me. Very frustrating :(
Question, when you start again after a thread break and you start where you left off, do you pull out a long bobbin thread on the bottom too? I am new to this and I was not sure.

@@linetteevans8337Janome has a new machine, 9480 and it has the stitch regulator foot, although they call it ASR (Accurate Stitch Regulator). If you know of one, would love to know. 😊
Are you stitching with a 2.5 stitch length? Also you can use press and seal plastic wrap on your fabric with a washable marker and you can really see how it will be.
When FMQ there is no stitch length due to the fact that you drop your feed dogs. (Th feed dogs control the stitch length.) You quilt sandwich is floating between the base plate of your machine and the presser foot. The length of the stitch is determined by how fast you move the quilt sandwich and the pressure you place on the gas pedal.
Another really good tutorial! A bit confused as you said, start at the edge but also said start in the middle.... I thought quilting is supposed to start in the middle - as you said when showing the quartered quilt image. But then started at the edge when drawing and when doing the demo block. So are we meant to imagine the demo block is in the middle of the quilt? Also, when demonstrating having to stop when in the middle, and the tying off of threads, you would also do this when you start to quilt as you are supposed to start quilting in the middle .... I am a bit confused! FMQ isn't my particular interest but this was still a top notch video, once again. No idea why you'd need running gloves for running though! Maybe running socks? I will Google! 😁😁😁
Thanks for you question so that I may clarify. When I FMQ I ALWAYS start on an edge. I never start in the center of the quilt. I find the middle on the edge and start from there. I often like to section off my quilt in 4 sections as shown in the illustration in the video. In this case i find the middle edge of that section and start quilting there. I hope that helps.
The pins I was using in the video are about 1 1/2". I have pins that go up to 3" as well. Whatever your preference is. I find the larger pins are easier to work with.
Great tutorial, ❤ however, it is very different to quilt an entire quilt compared to one section, as Fran demonstrated. I find the drag of a heavy quilt distorts my stitches and is very physically tiring.
This is the best free motion quilting tutorial out there. I think I finally feel confident enough to give it a try.

I have a W6 machine from Germany. It has a plastic plate to cover the feed dogs.

Are all the designs so smashed and tight? All the loft is gone. Is there any stuffing or just the thin felt? How do you defeat the feed dogs?

The name of the quilt pattern in the first demo was City Lights. This quilt alternates a plain block with a block made from 4, 4-patch blocks.

Please do a fmq video with a WHOLE quilt instead of a single block.
