Showing you my imperfect stitches, keeping it real even though that was kinda scary to film! Thank you so so much for all of your kind comments! 💕 Let me know, what is your biggest quilting struggle? xo Irene
My biggest quilting struggle is. Grip. I feel like my machine and I don’t get along. I slowly I’ve the fabric and the machine just takes off. As a result my ribbon candy and squiggly lines are horrendous
My biggest quilting struggle is relaxing while doing it! I get so tense that I can’t move anything - not the quilt or my arms the day after 😬🙄😉 I’m working on remembering to let the shoulders go down every five minutes 😉
I was told to practice free motion by first quilting-from-the-back. It's an old technique of getting a busy backing fabric, like large flowers or fall leaves. You practice by following the design in the fabric, like maybe picking every repeat of a particular set of flowers and following the outline of each petal. The positives to this method is that you get familiar with moving the fabric,, you learn how following a specific line (great when you later mark a design on the front and need to follow it), and since it's the back, people won't notice any mistakes you make. And on the front, all they see the pretty flowers or leaves and think you are a very skilled quilter! LOL
Thanks for keeping it real. I think a lot of tutorials/teachers are so experienced they make it look easy and forget that at the beginning you will find it tricky and make mistakes. I might give it another try instead of sticking to stitch in the ditch. 😅
Thank you for showing us all your mistakes, and what effect speed has on the stitches. This was much more informative than seeing someone doing the stitching perfectly. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Good work!
Wow, I’m so glad I found you. I am a wife mom grandma 65 years old just taking a free motion quilting and it is intimidating. You are the best teacher so far that I have encountered. I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed. I’m so excited to watch your videos. Thank you so much. Vickie from NY
You are so right' I had to find all this out over 20 years ago when I had breast cancer . My doctor said I would live any where from 2years to 5. With treatments…I’m so thankful he answered me when I said “and what if I don’t do the treatments you recommend?” He said “about the same amount of time” “well I’m going to trust God in this “ He sent me a registered letter stating he was no longer my doctor. I trusted God went to Colorado Springs and went through a program that offered me hope in natural ways to reclaim my health.. In the years following have learned so much about health care. Sadly I have watched friends die (under doctors care) because they just didn’t have the faith that Gods design of the human body to heal was a reality. Thank you for all you said on your video maybe some day things will change.
You are a comfortable teacher to learn from. A friend taught me a few years but I haven’t done it in a long time. One thing she told that you didn’t say was , “ Don’t forget to breathe.” 🥴🤓
I am so grateful to have found this video tutorial! I am a beginner quilter and this helps me start, unlike the 4000 other so called beginner tutorials on YT! Thank you so much! Gotta go, it's time to practice!
Thank you. I have been very afraid to try free motion quilting. Love the idea of a test sandwich and playing till I’m ready to stitch on the actual quilt. Great idea!
Thank you! One of the best “beginner” tutorials on FMQ 👍🏼. I had a very quick lesson once and gave up because I found it too hard to do on my own. The instruction I received was not long enough and was told to just go for it! This is bad advice! I loved how you showed us the errors that can occur...long and short stitches and the designs. I am now going to attempt this on my own...no choice COVID! 🥴 I will refer again to your video while I am in the process of trying it!
Aren’t you just the cutest thing with your FMQ’ing and your accent???? I adore your enthusiasm and teaching methods! I’ve FMQ’d a couple quilts to date but looking for tips, hints and hacks to get better is always something I do. I really like that you show your practices, it makes me feel much better about my own progress! Thanks!
This was the best beginner video I’ve seen! It’s ust what I needed. You are very encouraging by letting us know we don’t have to be perfect and we learn y mistakes. Thank you very much. You took my fear away! I’m just going to go for it!
I'm often frozen by the need for perfection, even though I'm still learning the basics. This is an awesome video of practicing and not being perfect (even though it still looks pretty darn great)! It gives me courage, and permission to play. Thank you!
Well, this says it exactly. Obviously you know what you’re doing, but it’s helpful to the rest of us that you’re just a little bit trepidatious. It’s like we know we can do it, but it’s scary to try and think that we’re going to ruin a quilt. Your message is…Try it, don’t worry! I really like your suggestion to create a practice quilt with no commitments. Excellent idea.
I have made exactly one quilt top and he’d it quilted. I knew free motion existed and I wanted to try, so now I feel confident enough to give it a go on some scraps. Mistakes and all. Thank you! So very informative. I did not know about quilting gloves either.
This was exactly the advice I needed. I wanted to try free-motion quilting and was too scared to start for fear I would ruin it. Now I can doodle, play with a practice piece and eventually, enjoy having a go. I love that you showed all your quilting - even the bits that you didn’t think went so well. So helpful!
I had a jelly roll and did the jelly roll race quilt and then i quilted each row with different stitches. Now when i want to free motion quilting i pull out the jelly roll quilt to see how the different stitches look and then i can practice the stitch i like on a scrap sandwich before i tackle the newest quilt. One lady in town does one test block of quilting it allows her to see how well the block works and if it looks like the pattern. She puts these sample blocks in a bag and when i was learning to free motion quilting i would take a block and make a sandwich and quilt it. She would then go over the quilting i did and offer tips. For her 75th birthday she did 75 quilts and she gifted her guests with a quilt.
Delightful attitude and great advice. You get a big "thumbs up" from me! I sometimes draw a design on freezer paper, lightly iron it to the quilt, then follow the pattern on the paper. The paper tears away - just make your stitches small enough to be strong when you remove the paper.
Thank you for the tutorial video, now I know how to get started with my domestic sewing machine. Wasn't even sure I would be able to do machine quilting with my old machine.
Just starting to try free motion quilting and I really needed to see this video. Thank you for letting us see you trials and errors. I wouldn't have learned anything from watching an expert wizz through a quilt perfectly. I feel much more at ease with giving it my best shot. Thanks!!!
This one is very good to watch. You explain everything from beginning to end. A lot of the RUclips's just even for the beginning ones. Don't explain a lot of different stuff that should be explained. I did not realize you had to put your stitching to zero.
You are a great teacher. I love your style. Your right we all need to embrace practicing and its a process. I hear from others....Practice ~ Practice ~ Practice. Its a dance! Thanks for your video
I LOVE this tutorial! Thanks for not being ashamed of sharing this even if you’re practicing! It helps me feel way less intimidated and actually excited to try something like this. Keep on keeping on 💪🏻
So true! I really appreciate seeing your scary quilting! Your suggestion to practice, to draw it out, and to enjoy the journey brought me a sense of peace. Thank you!!!
Your quilt is so gorgeous! I understand why I want to free motion quilt but not all the steps to make it successful. Thank you for this wonderful video. Your way of explaining is so helpful!
Sugaridoo, I always make quilts/blankets. I call them "Quilets" because I did not know how to free motion. I have watched several free motion quilting videos. Yours blows the others away. I really appreciate every step and instruction. It is also great that you showed us some imperfections, which by the way still look great. A quilt is homemade so it is always nice to see some imperfections. I am definitely not a perfectionist, so thank you. RB
So refreshing to see someone that quilts like ME, well better than me but you show me there’s hope and I will keep PRACTICING. Thanks girl, you are a cutie pie 🥰 and a good teacher.
Thanks for the instruction video. I'm just getting back to free motion and needed a refreasher course. You provided a great one. I like that your stitches are not perfect. You're just being real. Thank you
I love your smile while doing this whole thing of your video. Im a beginner in quilting like literally as in just starting cutting my fabric. Wanting to create gifts for my kida for their birthdays next month. That is im collecting ideas. Thank you so much. Im your new subscriber all the here from the Philippines💚💚💚
This video is fantastic. I started a huge quilt years ago, didn't end up liking the colors after the quilt top was finished so it just sat in the closet. For years! And years! Actually, more than a decade :( I just got it out & I'm determined to finish it even if I don't like the finished product. It will give me much needed experience to go on & make a quilt I love. In the mean time, I replaced my sewing machine with a Juki quilting machine. It has all the bells & whistles, but still, I didn't attempt the free motion quilting because I didn't know what I was doing & I was afraid of it. So my Juki quilting machine has not been used for quilting :( since I bought it a few years ago. Now, after watching Sugaridoo's vid, I'm excited. She doesn't stress or make it scary. I'm also going to listen to jazz while I'm attempting this. The piano was so relaxing. Now, back to the video. I'm going to watch it again :))
The dumb thing I did when I first started to try free motion quilting was to start on the left side of the quilt and work to the right, like reading a book. What I should have done was to start in the middle of the quilt and work one way or the other toward the edges. It bunched and made a mess. :(
This was extremely helpful to me! I very much appreciate you showing stitches that you were not completely happy with. As I watched you, I began to realize that a mistake here and there will be unnoticed in the overall beauty of the quilt. Thank you very much for sharing!
I am a novice sewer, just watching lots of videos to get an idea of what I want to try. I have a new Janome machine so eager to see what I can do with it. You are so friendly and bubbly, a pleasure to watch and even though you say you made mistakes, it looks great and you make it look so easy. I would love to see this quilt finished. This is something to put on my list to try. thank you so much.
I've done free motion quilting previously (stepling), however, that was awhile ago now. So I found your tutorial very refreshing & helpful.. I also thoroughly enjoyed your friendly manner, & gentle encouragement. Thank you
Thankyou for this video. It shows your human and are quite happy with your ‘mistakes’ that still turn out perfectly ok. I’m just starting to fmq and am practicing as much as possible. Finding the right pattern is helpful too. Thankyou from Australia x
Thank you for this very encouraging video! You have shared information that I never knew or saw anywhere else (stitch length, height adjusting the free motion foot). Very cheery and fun video. Can hardly wait to get started.
You are delightful and so very encouraging to those of us who have longed to try FMQ, but have no idea where to start! I'm just finishing a throw for my son's 40th birthday and will try filling in some of the areas using your ideas. Thank you.
Today is Day 4 of my venture into FMQing! Your sincere enthusiasm and sharing your journey has provided a real support for me. Thank you for sharing, so happy “found” you!
thank you so much for your tips and for telling us that it is alright to be imperfect! I am just amazed though how you just start a design and keep going! I have mental block when I try, but thanks to you, I will keep trying!
I have always been a bit scared of free motion quilting, in case I ruined all my work, so just quilted in the ditch. You have taken away the feeling that it has to be perfect and I am practising on scraps. Thank you so much! I love how relaxed I am now. Michelle xx
I just finished FMQ a quilt for the first time. I wasn't aware I needed to put stitch length at zero. It turned out alright, some sloppy stitches but was getting nicer stitches as I went along and got more comfortable. My machine doesn't have a large throat area and that hindered my movement. The quilt was going to be for charity, but I decided to keep for me to compare as I continue quilting.
I love your courage in sharing your free motion quilting. I have experienced everything you showed, and appreciate that it is not necessary to be perfect - just enjoy the moment and be fearless!
It’s true. Quilting gives me tense shoulders. But I still enjoy it💕 Using a thread which matches most parts of the quilt colours also helps to hide imperfections. But it really doesn’t matter🤗
My first attempt at this frustrated me, I tried again and realized it was a lot like ‘doodling’. I’ve always been a doodler, even when I was supposed to be taking notes😬. When you mentioned it, it made me 😁.
I have just started to do free motion quilting and realized very quickly that it does require a lot of practice, practice, practice. My first few quilt sandwiches were just awful but I have improved. I have learned a lot from your video...it was very easy to see what you were doing. Thanks for doing this video!
Thank you, Irene, I really enjoyed and appreciated watching and learning how to Motion Quilting. You are so friendly and I loved seeing your smiling face.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for showing us that not being perfect is ok and expected.... I think you are Awesome and supply the Quilting World with FANTASTIC Videos
Thank you for the video..I know that there are many beginners out there and your video will be very helpful to them. A couple of things that I do when FMQ....I ensure my machine has stopped with the needle in the down position before adjusting my hands. You will have much less control if you adjust your hands while the machine is still running. Also, I have found that it’s much easier to handle the bulk of a large quilt by fan folding it within the throat space, rather than rolling it. Rolling it can become difficult to move the quilt as you are quilting, whereas fan folding it allows the quilt to move freely.
Thank you very much. Yours is the first video that is so detailed. I want to start free motion quilting in a country where its unknown so no one is available to teach or instruct. I felt frustrated for a great while and came across your video. Keep on posting these fine instructional video's from which "quilting dummies" like me are helped. And you are so humble to. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Using a new machine someone gave me. I always wondered how this was done. Tried it while I watched your video. Making a Christmas present. You make it look easy and fun. Not perfect but looks great.
You are just a breath of fresh air sweetie. I'm NEW as can be to quilting. Tried making a few garment items years and years ago--25 or more. Recently decided to try my hobby hand at sewing again. LOVE free stich quilting!!! You showing imperfect results is very encouraging to those of us who may struggle with putting forth so much effort and still not getting what we want. Your comment that we wouldn't be able to paint the first time we pick up a paint brush hit home. Very smart. Keep up the good work, and than you so much for this inspiring video.
I love how you "keep it real", but personally, I thought your stitching was gorgeous! Way better than my first samples! I hibernated my quilting projects for many years, but having dug out fabric for masks, I have rediscovered my love of quilting! Back to re-learning FMQ! Thanks for the great video!
This was soooo helpful. I have just started free motion quilting and couldn't understand why my stitches were so long and that I need to turn the stitch length to 0. Thank you so very much. I have watched a lot of free motion videos but none that talked about and showed the not so perfect stitching and explaining why. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this video!! It’s nice to see a tutorial with a bigger quilt than a sample size (which is what I see in most FMQ tutorials)! And I love how you demonstrated the differences with speed of stitching & moving the fabric. I have the same machine as you do. Love the extra throat space to quilt!!
Thank you! I honestly can't thank you enough.. I have watched so many videos and couldn't get the hang of fmq... After watching your video, I finally get it... You answered all of my questions and went over everything perfect! This gave me the confidence and taught me what I needed to free motion quilt.. Again, thank you..💖
Thanks for this video. It’s very reassuring to see that it’s not perfect when you are learning but that’s OK. You make me feel less intimidated with doing a large size quilt, thanks for those tips!
Thanks for showing the "not perfect" parts! Keeping it real helps me know that I'm not the only one with anxiety about trying this. Great explanations about trying different speeds with both your hands and your needle!
I loved watching your tutorial, especially with the imperfections you show as it keeps things very real. You are very easy to listen too and so cheery!
This was great and so much more specific for the beginner I am. I picked up at least 4 or more things I hadn’t seen before. Thanks so much. I have my best friends throw all sandwiched, but became stymied till I found your lesson. Had seen so many, but yours took the cake! Thank you! 🥳. 😘
This was a great FMQ video for beginners. Thanks for keeping it real and for some very helpful suggestions! My motto is passion, not perfection! Your stuff looked GREAT to me!
Showing you my imperfect stitches, keeping it real even though that was kinda scary to film! Thank you so so much for all of your kind comments! 💕 Let me know, what is your biggest quilting struggle? xo Irene

I’m working on remembering to let the shoulders go down every five minutes 😉

I was told to practice free motion by first quilting-from-the-back. It's an old technique of getting a busy backing fabric, like large flowers or fall leaves. You practice by following the design in the fabric, like maybe picking every repeat of a particular set of flowers and following the outline of each petal. The positives to this method is that you get familiar with moving the fabric,, you learn how following a specific line (great when you later mark a design on the front and need to follow it), and since it's the back, people won't notice any mistakes you make. Thank you for including the "oops." It made watching so much more encouraging and fun! Freeing. Great video.
Believe it, you are a good teacher. This was one of the best FMQ tutorials I've seen. Thanks for the video 😊
Ah thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this video. I am a beginner and it has been very helpful. You explain very clearly. Blessings
Reminds me of my piano 🎹 teacher.
Thank you very much. You have inspire me to try free motion quilting. You are a great teacher!
I LOVE this tutorial! Thanks for not being ashamed of sharing this even if you’re practicing! It helps me feel way less intimidated and actually excited to try something like this. Keep on keeping on 💪🏻
Thanks for keeping it real! So much more helpful than videos that try to make it look easy!
Aww thanks! Keeping it real was a bit scary, but I'm soo happy that so many can relate 😊
You are adorable and are doing a great job! I also like that your darning foot doesn’t jump up and down, stays nice and put!
Thankyou for this video. So helpful in getting me started. Very well explained, very easy to follow
I'm working on my 2nd quilt ever. It's a queen size and I've decided to machine quilt it. NO PRESSURE! You gave me a lot of confidence. Thank you!

I LOVE your honesty about how things go when you're learning to quilt! Thank you so much for that.
Thanks for the instruction video. I'm just getting back to free motion and needed a refreasher course. You provided a great one. I like that your stitches are not perfect. You're just being real. Thank you

You have given me hope for my quilting. I never understood how to do it before I saw your RUclips video.. THANK YOU
!
Thank you for making FMQ look not so scary. I am about to try this for the first time & you have given me confidence.
It’s nice to see someone at my level give a tutorial. Thanks!
This was such a perfect step by step and wholesome learning experience.

Best beginner FMQ tutorial by far (and I've watched alot). Its nice to know mistakes are OK.
It's very helpful that you showed us how you quilt a large quilt on your regular size domestic machine. I love your videos!
I am a novice sewer, just watching lots of videos to get an idea of what I want to try. I have a new Janome machine so eager to see what I can do with it. I love your channel. I picked up alot just in this one video. 😊
Your video is great. You get straight to the point and then follow thru. Thank you
Very practical and encouraging video for beginners!
I've done free motion quilting previously (stepling), however, that was awhile ago now. So I found your tutorial very refreshing & helpful.. I also thoroughly enjoyed your friendly manner, & gentle encouragement. Thank you
So refreshingly honest - thank you for letting us see your mistakes too. This is a very good tutorial.
Thank you Irene. Very useful! And very clear.

I am working on a quilt and i found your demonstration very helpful
Loved your video!! Learned a lot. You helped me relax and just have fun learning. You are so down to earth and encouraging !!

I love your enthusiasm! And your honesty about how the process will go for a first time free motion quilter! And that quilt is still adorable!
Thank you so much Melnie 💕 😘
thank you so much for your tips and for telling us that it is alright to be imperfect! I am just amazed though how you just start a design and keep going! I have mental block when I try, but thanks to you, I will keep trying!
You really helped me out with the beginner basics of FMQ and I loved this video!
I have always been a bit scared of free motion quilting, in case I ruined all my work, so just quilted in the ditch. You have taken away the feeling that it has to be perfect and I am practising on scraps. Thank you so much! I love how relaxed I am now. Michelle xx
Wow!!!! Thank you for this video! I’m just starting and I think you are amazing!!!
I like the detail with which she explains things. And the close-up videotaping and photographs. Thank you.
Your sweet and gentle voice makes it so easy to listen. Thanks for the encouragement!
I absolutely love your tutorial on free motion quilting. Thanks for taking us along your journey of the arrow improv quilt. ❤😁
Tha m you so much Denise! Have you done any improv quilting?
@@Sugaridoo I have done a small amount of improv quilting but have plans for SO much more!
Thank you, Irene, I really enjoyed and appreciated watching and learning how to Motion Quilting. You are so friendly and I loved seeing your smiling face.
You have such a fun and sweet personality, Irene. Thank you got showing your practicing!
This is a really great beginner video!! Thank you! Off to do some free motion sewing 😁
Thank you Thank you Thank you for showing us that not being perfect is ok and expected.... I think you are Awesome and supply the Quilting World with FANTASTIC Videos
You are such a wonderful teacher and you gave me courage to try again! Thank you!
Rolling it can become difficult to move the quilt as you are quilting, whereas fan folding it allows the quilt to move freely.
thank you for sharing. that is excellent advice! I never thought of fan folding!!
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing and keeping it real. Cannot wait to practice free motion quilting
Thanks for your tips and sharing your practice. I took a class along time ago and now with your
refresher, I am going to go for it!!!
You have good designs.
You explain everything so well. Thank you so much
I love how you "keep it real", but personally, I thought your stitching was gorgeous!
Sharing your "oops moments" is by far the best part of your teaching! You've provided instruction AND inspiration! I'm just a newbie. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I’m learning free motion quilting and you’ve given me the confidence to give it more of a try.💞
This is the BEST and LEAREST teaching for beginners on FREE MOTION QUILTING. Thank you Irene!
Thank you 🙏🏻 I finally finished a quilt that was good and I didn’t want to mess it up experimenting !!!
