Keurig Handle Stuck, Won't Close - New, Simple Fix

  • So imagine you have a Keurig 2.0 coffee maker. You open the handle, put in a K-Cup pod, and just as you are about to enjoy a delicious brew, you find that you can't close the lid to even get it started. Lot's of people have experienced this and it only happens on Keurig 2.0 machines - any Keurig 2.0 in fact, although the model I'm working with here happens to be a Model 200.
    I recognize that this is not the first video to address this problem - there are others out there created by other folks as well. But, I thought I would create a video with some good close-ups to show you exactly why this is happening. I also show a new solution of how to fix it.
    Intro: • Keurig Handle Stuck, W...
    Disassembly (If Needed): • Keurig Handle Stuck, W...
    How the Handle Gets Stuck: • Keurig Handle Stuck, W...
    How to Repair it: • Keurig Handle Stuck, W...

    That tab was specifically made to break. There's no reason for that gap to be there other than to make people have to go buy a new machine. Thanks for the vid.

      My thoughts exactly. A small plastic tab, often exposed to water boiling temperature, and below a heavy metal bar…

    I just came home with one of these from an estate sale for $10… as I was deep cleaning it the handle got stuck and I shook out that dang plastic piece. I think it just broke while I was cleaning it by being too rough with it so a bit bummed about that but glad to come across this detailed video from 2 years ago, thank you!

    Thank you so much for this information & simple fix. You’re the first person I’ve seen to offer an actual fix instead of a temporary solution to close the lid, which I’ve already been doing for the past few months. I have the Keurig K300, so a little different model than yours, but I’m certain this is what happened to it, as well. Thanks again.

    Planned obsolescence. A little plastic tab that ages and with the heat from the unit will eventually break. Most people will just trash the old unit and buy another. My advise is what the video shows in the beginning and continue to us it without going through the rest of the video, especially removing the shroud. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you for posting this video! Home Depot did not have the round clear 1/2-inch diameter bumpers in stock at the nearby store, so I ended up buying an 8 pack of the 1/2 in x 1 in rectangular bumpers they did have in stock and cut the two bumpers to fit the gaps where the plastic springs used to reside. I think I have encountered the issue with the handle sagging down before on another Keurig 2.0 model I had , that was probably an indication that the tabs were failing (weak) but not broken yet.
    Currently I have a Keurig 2.0 model 400 and it has the problem with the handle getting stuck and not wanting to close. It also has the problem of the handle not staying all the way up and sagging when you open it.
    And since the tabs on mine are most certainly broken ( based on what you said), then I would assume that is what is causing both the stuck open problem and the handle sagging problem for me. Thank you so much for this fix.
    Excellent video quality. Clear and detailed instructions. This will help me a lot. Great presentation and music in the video as well. Much appreciated.

    I bought a Keurig at a ministry thrift shop. They said it was brand new and tested. I think that was baloney. Before I was aware of the church’s deception, I bought 2 boxes of coconut-caramel coffee pods. I cleaned my (“new”) device up nice and got it all set up for service so I’d be ready for my coffee when the Amazon truck came. I wanted to run vinegar water thru it a couple times quick and “s**t!” The d*mn thing got stuck open. I honestly think this video saved my body from making a small, yet still emotionally and physically draining, bit of panic. I pretty much figured it out by the time I found u, but it really did help having someone go thru the steps w me. And I knew I wasn’t alone in my dilemma. U were very easy to listen to and I even had a one-sided discussion w u about the dynamics of these machines. Thank u very much. I may find it in my heart to give the ladies at the church a link to ur video. Of course, if they have a Keurig, there’s more than a slight chance they will be in in the same predicament at some point. And that makes me smile right now as I enjoy my cup of coffee that has a hint of vinegar to it. Patience. I need to work on that. Without it I have panic and vinegar coffee. (Smiling again.) Thank u for taking the time to make this instructional video. (I used a plastic knife btw. W my model I was about to just slide it into place and leave it - can barely see it!) Peace & Love, everyone!

    I could not get the little clear bumpers to stay put. I used J-B Weld SteelStick. It is like an epoxy putty that you knead together and it cures very hard. I made two pieces about the size of my little finger nail and about 1/8 inch thick, pressed it into the gap created by the missing tabs and leveled it off. I held the lever down and closed the handle so that the round bar would not stick to the weld. After about 4 or 5 minutes, I gently opened the handle all the way and closed it again. This ensures that the partially cured, but not sticky, putty allows the round bar to pass. Works like new! Thanks for posting this, it allowed me to understand this frustrating and apparently popular problem.

      Glad it worked out for you. It sounds like you came up with a good solution. I suppose there are many ways to approach this, but the main thing is that the solution works and it's not so complicated that it discourages people from trying. The J-B weld can be molded to fit, so it works well.

      Of course you can try the fix that I talked about in the video, but it sounds like it will take more work than just that to get it going again. If the broken pieces are still available, you might be able to glue them back together as long as they are easy to get to. If they are not easy to get to, it may require you to disassemble the machine to get to the parts that are broken. I'm working on a video to disassemble the specific Model 200 that you see in this video. It's not ready yet, but when I publish it, it will only cover removing all the outside shrouds, including the display shroud on top. It won't cover disassembly of the moving mechanism associated with the handle. In the meantime, there are other videos out there that I have seen that tell you how to disassemble a Keurig 2.0.

      My husband was able to fix it with a “plastic weld” and so far it’s holding up at work! I did add a sign to treat gentians never force!

    Ok so this helps a lot! … but there’s still something else blocking mine. I put bumpers in (with much difficulty, little bumpers wanted to fall deeper in first), and I can still only close it by using the finger trick to pull down the black tray. The handle refuses to budge like there’s something else blocking it from moving. I have mine fully disassembled and haven’t found the second issue yet. Help please? 😭 My family wanted to throw it away but I’m too stubborn
    Edit to add: our model may differ slightly as it is a 2.0 500

      Make sure that the bumper completely fills the gap that was vacated by the missing tab, such that the bumper is level with the top of the gap or very slightly higher. If that all looks good, then take a small flashlight and look deeper back. As the handle is closed, the metal rod that gets stuck in the gap is supposed to slide further back through curved slots - one on each side. At the bottom of these slots is yet another tab that helps to keep the handle snug when the handle is all the way CLOSED. I have no idea whether those tabs break also - I haven't heard whether they do or don't. Make sure nothing is jamming up those slots. To make it easier to view what I'm talking about, it helps to remove the K-cup holder by pressing upwards from underneath it to pop it out.

    That's not the problem I have. I didn't know how to take it apart to give it a good cleaning. I ended up taking the hinging pins out now I don't know how to put it together again. I can see some of it on here but not all of it. Can anyone help?

    Can we just cut that tray out? This just happened to mine after 8 years.

    • @getitsettech1015
      @getitsettech1015  Год назад

      Unfortunately no. The tray is needed to push the K-pod down so that the needle punctures it underneath. A person could puncture the cartridge manually by pushing it down when first inserting it though.

    This seems to be a common problem and Keurig is not really helpful. You should not have to buy a new one or jerry-rig the thing for such a common issue! I think that their plastics are not so great - too hard, thin and brittle. Old school coffee makers have more flexible plastic.

    How has Keurig been able to continue in business with so many defects that have consumers struggling with countless tricks and twists to compensate for poor design and quality? What other product has been able to survive with these problems?

    • @getitsettech1015
      @getitsettech1015  2 года назад +1

      I know people that have just resigned themselves to buying a new Keurig every 3 years or so because they just don't expect them to survive that long. It's a little better now than it was 10 years ago, because they aren't using those leaky solenoid valves anymore. But on the other hand, they stopped using the magnetic float sensor in the outside reservoir to measure water level, when that way of doing it had been 100% reliable. Instead, they stick 2 electrical probes into the water to measure how much water is there. I've had trouble with that method because it's unreliable and the machine can run itself empty because it doesn't know how much water it has. So you de-scale it to help solve the problem, but then the de-scaling often makes it worse. I will say though that I think they have taken notice of the broken tabs (the subject of this video) and I'm not noticing any recent machines that have that problem anymore.
