  • 3 Things That Could Break your Keurig K Cup Single Serve Coffee Maker Machine.
    1. Do Not Remove Water tank or Water reservoir while coffee maker is brewing.
    2. Do Not use Distilled Water. Your coffee maker needs minerals in the water and Distilled water has none. You can use filtered or bottled water but never distilled unless you add minerals to the water.
    3. Do Not leave your used K Cup in the brewer after you are done brewing your coffee. The fastest way to clog the top needle is by leaving Coffee K Cups in overnight until you brew your next coffee.
These 3 Tips should help keep your Keurig running for many years.
I show you the warning that comes on all Keurig's about never remove the water reservoir from the machine while your are brewing a coffee. It can cause the machine to fail and not work anymore.

You can also get mold from leaving the wet, used K cup in place. I usually not only remove the K cup, but leave the lid open for a little while for it to air dry after my last use for the day.

This is my second Keurig Coffee Brewer. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first one lasted 6 years. It worked beautifully until the day it didn't. It was hard to go back to the drip coffee for a couple of days while I waited on my Keurig to get here. There is a huge difference in the taste. Keurig makes a really good cup of coffee. This new one is a little different from my old one. I find putting the water filter in was easier than on the old one. Attaching the water reservoir was also a little different but once I figured it out, it too was easier. This new one has the auto off feature but is not programmable like the old one. Only three cup sizes instead of four. The odd thing for me was how much lighter in weight this one is compared to my old one. More plastic and much less metal in the construction of this one. The price is so much less than the original Keurig that I bought and the coffee tastes the same so all in all I am satisfied.

I have used exclusively distilled water in my k-compact, so I would never have to worry about descaling or contaminants. Haven't had any problems, going on 2 years. Coffee tastes fine.
My hypothesis is that they are (a) upselling their descale solution or (b) hoping your scaled-up machine will wear out as soon as faster so you throw it out and buy a new one!
I will never stop using distilled water.

I just replaced an older Keurig model that I had for about 10 years with the Keurig Supreme and I’ve always left my used k-cup in my Keurig. Never had any issues but with that said, after watching your video, not anymore. I went in my kitchen just now and took out my used k-cup from my new Keurig Supreme that I just got several days ago. Thanks JAD, For another fine video. Thinking back over how I did something wrong I remembered the mistake I made that ruined my K cup Supreme Plus. It was just over a year old, and the decalcify notice came on. To be sure I was doing it correctly, I found your instruction video. After I made sure that the water and vinegar mix was right, I set the water reservoir beside the machine, then proceeded to watch more of the video. I don’t know WHAT the heck I was thinking, but I pushed the two buttons (12 and 8 oz) at the same time as directed, and to my shock I noticed the reservoir still sitting next to the machine! Immediately I heard the machine start so I grabbed the reservoir and placed in the base, but then everything stopped. I tried several different things to get it back, but to no avail. Permanently broken, I thought I would post this comment to warn others to be careful and PAY ATTENTION to what their doing so they don’t have the same experience. P.S. I have already purchased an identical replacement. 😊

I am on my forth keirig machine over the years. The most inportant thing i have learned is to pierce the k- cup on the bottom by pushing down on it before closing the lid. This is because the k-cups are pressurized, & if u just clos the lid to pierce it the pressure will force small pieces of the aluminum to to get clogged in the needle.

Using distilled water impedes the bloom of the coffee and you'll lose flavor extraction. If you're using it and wonder why your coffee is always weak or why you're having to use so much more coffee, that's your reason.
Edit: Also pro tip! Push down and puncture the bottom of the K-cup first, then close the lid and puncture the top. You can impart stress on the K-cup when you put it in and puncture it both top and bottom at once and that can sometimes lead to a failed brew, or grounds in the brew. Puncturing the bottom first ensures a strong seal when the lid is closed.

Just a fyi. I have a Keurig Supreme and someone turned it on without water and it completely shut down, no power. You can open up the unit and at the top of the heating element is the thermostat (not sure on different models) in the center of the thermostat is a small hole and if you unfold a paper clip and push inside the hole it will reset the thermostat and the unit will power on as normal. You are right about the tank and water, it doesn't take much for the thermostat to overheat and shut down.

Distilled water is used in C-PAP machines. The reason given for this use is to prevent mineral deposits forming in the C-PAP water tubing. We distill our tap water and see lots of gunk left in water pot of the distiller. This gunk is mostly what the city adds to the water it supplies to the residents. City water is only as pure as federal guidelines require.

Store bought distilled water also has no added minerals, so once it is in your body, it draws minerals out of your body to equalize with the water already in your body before you pee it out so it's also unhealthy

Tip I learned the hard way: Don’t walk away from your machine after you hit the button to start. Remain close to the machine watching and listening until the brew is finished. If it makes a weird noise or starts spraying coffee you can shut it off before it gets worse. I once went down in the basement to check on the laundry and when I got back up to the kitchen I was confronted with a horrible mess from an exploded cup. Took a long time to clean up. And also, press the pod straight down to pierce the bottom needle before you close the lid to pierce the top. And clean the needles frequently with a paperclip.

Never remove tank when on cycle. It will cause it to power off permanently, UNTIL; you reset the thermostat attached to the heating coil. Must be taken apart and then between the two wires is a small hole. I used a dental tool and you can FEEL the button reset. Plug in and power on for one second and unplug immediately. Then reassemble. Works fine again. Don't pull a Mark. Leave tank alone when ON.

Good info and here is a better tip. Use an empty jug or bottle to fill up your Keurig machine. If you break the water holding tank they aren't cheap to replace. I also clean my machine with a steamer. The needle and the pod holder get grind build up. Remove the pod holder and clean below. Good maintenance keeps the machine running good. I had used distilled water for over a year because the city water was so nasty where I was or chemically and I never had a problem. ( and on my older keurg the city water had left a film on the reservoir) It is good to know down the road and I had a machine on the far left with the five prongs. I also didn’t know about leaving the coffee pod in there. I did too much probably. And I don’t as far as I know had a clogged up issue. But this is good to know for future use. Thank you.

Thanks very much! This was very helpful. I’ve been using Zero Water filtered water, which has 0 PPM. I guess I should be using the Brita, which doesn’t filter out much at all. Water out of the town water tap is 260 PPM and Brita brings it down to 250 PPM. Zero Water brings the tap water down to 0 PPM and I thought this was a good thing as you wouldn’t need to descale as often. Thanks again.

Thanks JAD....I recently discovered after having Dunkin pods pressurize and block the lower needle as well as force coffee grounds out of pod and into the mug that the grind is very fine.
So started to use the strong brew button which slows the pump enough to not over pressurize the pod. Any other K cups did not do this so that is my deduction. It works well with the Dunkin pods. Also, it does seem to be a good idea to puncture the bottom of pod before closing lid to start the brew. The convenience of the Keurig makes it worthwhile to keep in good order with a little maintenance.

Be sure to always push the k cup down into the holder to make sure there is no pressure in it before closing the lid, ..allowing the lid to force the k cup down onto the drain needle when there is pressure in the cup will cause grinds to shoot up into the upper needles and clog the machine. GREAT. I just filled up my water tank with DISTILLED water unbeknownst to me and currently brewing a cup. I SHOULD have checked that pickup Walmart order 🙄
I have a newer model than has a 12 cup pot and the single kcup option.
Now that I hear u talk about the “clogged needle problem”, my very first machine I had, the needle got clogged quite a bit and I had to keep cleaning it out with the paper clip method -converted to safety pin , but was a pain in my ***
🤔 But, then again that’s MY bad bcuz I’m the one who hurried out of the house for work (in the O.R.) so NO, u 💯% CANNOT be late for a surgery! And so, I left my wet k-cups in my machine for several days, as I didn’t notice right away bcuz I’m a light coffee drinker.
    Lesson learned.

My experience: Removing the water reservoir, thus stopping the flow of water, while it’s brewing risks overheating and popping the breaker on the water heater, killing power to the unit. Resetting the breaker requires disassembly. I’ve done mine a couple times (one due to fiddling with the reservoir and another during a protracted descaling session when it overheated) luckily, mine didn’t suffer any permanent damage as the breaker did it’s job. Taught me a lesson, too. 😕
