    Keurig must design these to force customers into buying another one. Otherwise what's up with the hidden reset button? Most hair dryers and many other electronic devices have overheat protection the consumer can reset, in 10 seconds or less. Those that don't automatically reset after a cool down period.
    In the morning after the descale procedure, I found my Keurig had flatlined. It was unresponsive and I could not save it. Oh no, coffee withdrawal! Your tutorial saved the patient. I performed the operation as described. The most difficult part was opening the patient's chest to get at the vital organs. I only wish my surgical professors in Med. School were as good a teacher as you are. You should get an award for saving the lives of countless coffee machines.

      Removing the covers is the most difficult part. A self-resetting thermal switch would likely not pass the UL requirement for this appliance and here we are trying to figure out to buy a new one or can we fix it. Glad this helped and thanks for the comments!

    Excellent tutorial! My Keurig had a split and leaking hose right under the water pump. The thermal switch was tripped due to no water. Amazing the board did not short. Anyway, swapped on a new hose from an old Keurig and reset the switch. Back in business. Thank you. I didnt break the cover because of your help ( :
    Have a blessed day!

    Why in the world would you have a non-externally-resettable thermal switch other than for planned failures and replacement? This is the kind of thing regulatory bodies should investigate. Keurig needs to be fined for putting out these pieces of garbage. Mine is less than 6 months old and tripped this switch. DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL.

      I've never had an appliance so aggravating. I am guessing this is a safety device and if it reset automatically after cooled down and the power was still on, it would start the cycle over again. Probably a fire hazard and would not be good if left unattended.

    Done! Thank you! I use to use my machine just about every day then stopped for a lil while. Thinking that’s why the clog happened or someone was using non filtered water in it. I did not have a volt exchanger to use, yet I was able to fast pinch the tube above chip board right as the pumps started to run. Giving the pressure force to push the clog open. And it has been running since! Thank you dude!

    Hi Dave, great video! You’re a great teacher too!👍. I’ve got the Keurig Supreme, not the plus. Did a descale and I think I overheated the thermostat. Will have to try the reset trick. Question. What caused it to pop the thermostat before you tested the motors after the reset? Did it just need a descale? Doesn’t your unit have an indicator telling you to descale? Thanks man. I subbed. I also love that little adjustable power source. Great tool. I’m going to see if I can find one. 😁

    • @CarveTools
      @CarveTools  6 месяцев назад

      The thermostat originally tripped when first powered up after not being used for some time (months). Might be a good ideal to descale the Keurig before putting storing it away. Thanks for the comments!

    This what I did: removed cover, drilled a hole on side to access reset button, installed a rubber hole cover, put everything back together. Now whenever the heat sensor is tripped, I remove rubber hole cover, insert a paper clip and reset my Keurig….no need to remove cover anymore.

    • @CarveTools

    • @steveklein4367
      @steveklein4367 9 месяцев назад

      I just looked, and the outer cover does have a stub which will not allow removal without removing the screws. That appears to be their purpose. You can tell by unscrewing one screw and pulling/flexing the cover gently away while shining a flashlight into the hole - you can see the hole move in there.

    Yes, we get that its a safety feature. But.... these kinds of devices should ALWAYS be about to be auto-reset when the temperature cools, or else provide a plastic bridge pin that would allow it to be reset from outside the unit, without completely taking it apart. For this product version, at least you can reset it. For the K-Duo Special Edition, Keurig actually used a non-resettable fuse that is soldered in place! This is an intentional design FLAW and Keurig knows exactly what they are doing here. They are hoping naive people will simply "throw away" their machines if this happens outside of their crappy little warrantee? Oh wait, this kind of this is probably treated as "misuse" and not covered by any warrantee. The other likely reason they did this is to make lots of money for their official Keurig repair contractors, knowing for them its a can be a fairly trivial fix, but they will likely charge customers by the hour, even for a 3 minute fix, and probably cost them $120 or $150 to "fix" it. Then, if customers balk and say "screw it, I'll just buy another", then Keurig wins again. So its a win-win to design garbage products like this.

    Thanks for including the info about checking the pump motors! I had two units where I reset the thermal switch and they immediately tripped when trying the first brew. Both sets of motors were working but there was apparently air in the lines and they did not draw water. I was able to prime the lines by separating the top line from the 3 way connector on the left side of the machine and using a squeeze bottle to fill the small compartment with a bit of water. Once I did this, I could run the motors and fill the lines with water before resetting the switch one more time. Both units work great after a descale cycle.
    Also note: My motors were labeled and are indeed 12 volt motors. I found that a standard 9 volt battery is enough to power the motors for testing.

    I drilled a hole in the steel/plastic cover at the exact measurement needed to access the heat switch reset button. I won't provide the measurements because you need to get the cover off before doing this, otherwise you'll likely drill a wire. Then when it's off, you can measure for yourself and de-burr the steel hole with a philips bit on a drill. Takes a little while because the steel is tough. I did a 3/8" hole so I had to walk around the hole with the bit until it was smooth; if your hole is smaller than your philips bit, you may not need to do that. I wanted a larger hole so I could more easily see where I'm poking.

    Of all the DIY videos I've watched and followed, this ranks towards the top - if not at the top - as it saved my daughter $160+ by returning the replacement she bought me from Target (note: CostCo has a much better, and cheaper, deal) for Father's Day 2024.
    At the risk of being presumptuous, I have a few refinements to offer:
    1) when re-assembling, I suggest you start at the front (rounded) part as the studs on front align the clips on either side, then clip the left side in before doing the same on the right side as it just seems to come together easier
    2) if you have them, use automotive trim tools to pry the exterior cover off to avoid as much as possible dinging it with a metal tool (Hobo Freight has a great kit for a few dollars)
    3) my Supreme Plus TAS while descaling because I hit the "K" (brew) button when the machine told this dummy to "add water", which most likely tripped the thermal switch/sensor
    4) if you find stray bits of broken plastic comingled in with the coffee grounds kicked loose by disassembling the machine, don't fret as like with auto interior parts, plastic doesn't like to be disturbed post-factory, but unlike with a car nothing is going to rattle while using your Keurig
    I'm not a design engineer, but I wish Keurig would've figured out a way to externally re-set the thermal switch/sensor without having to partially disassemble it. They may have thought of it, but could not place it somewhere externally accessible and still serve its safety function.
    Time for a cup...

I was able to fix my coffee maker thanks to you. I have only had it one year and was not happy when it did not work. My problem was my own fault and occurred because I had pushed the start button for a cup of coffee and realized there was not enough water. Not thinking, I grabbed the reservoir to fill it and overheated the machine. Now I am going to enjoy a cup of tea! Thanks again!

    I can't thank you enough for making this video. I thought my unit was toast! I tried to make a cup of coffee with the water tank removed and it smelled burnt and wouldn't power up. I have a model K921 and only had to get the cover off. Once open, I was able to see the thermal switch and used a large paperclip to poke it to reset. I didn't have to remoave any parts. I am so happy I don't have to spend $150 to replace it. Thank you, you rock Mr Carve!

    Hey Dave! Thank you for this video, it helped a lot. Mine was the same, no power. But after I reset it like you explained, It turned on!
    BUT, for some reason, when I tried to brew something after repairing, it started warming up and then it shut down again, just went black without pouring anything. Now its back as before, no power. Any ideas?

    Success I fixed my coffee maker with your video by re setting the sensor
    I think mine overheated because water was dried up from months of non use
    But I went one step further by using a small holesaw to cut access port so I won’t have to take it apart next time!!!!!
    Also primed the water lines by pumping the water tank up and down about 25 times

    My Keurig Supreme Plus only has a single water pump with an “air pump” - according to the control board - up on top with a smaller hose(I believe this device just opens up to atmosphere to allow the pump inlet line to lose suction - like a slit in a plastic drinking straw). I took the smaller hose off the air pump device at the top and ran the water pump - with a separate 12v supply like this video suggested - WITH the smaller hose PINCHED. I did this to verify my water pump was good. Then I reconnected the hose and wires at the board.
    Thank you for this video AND the bonus details on Descaling - I went through the descaling process last month without entering Descaling Mode, and I think the machine thinking it still needed to be descaled may have led to the issue of overheating…maybe programming? 🤷‍♂️

    Unbelievable. Woke up this morning, made coffee and it just steamed without any liquid coming out. Thought I was doomed. This worked like a charm. NOTE: for the simplier less mechanically inclined people, I didn't have of of the eletricity parts and it worked fine. To reset the switch all I used was a staple (without plugging the tester in). Also, didn't test each section like he did after resetting. I just tested it before putting it back together. Works like its new. THANK YOU!

    So it worked. Basically I ran it and forgot to put the water reservoir on it. It smelled a little burnt and I couldn’t get it to turn back on. I followed the steps here and it worked. But I can’t put it back together properly. If I put the back top lid back on it blocks me trying to lift open the front to put the coffee pod in. So at the moment I don’t have the top lid properly on just partially. If anyone has any ideas I’m all ears.

    Thank you for the video. I was able to fix mine by resetting the switch. Mine quit working all because the water reservoir wasn't on quite all the way. When it started heating up, I guess it tripped it. Glad that was an easy fix. Broke a tab or two but better than buying a new one.

    So I did this and it started momentarily but then shut off again. I let the switch cool for awhile and tried again. Same issue. I have been away from home for a couple months and when looking at the clear tubes I could see there was very little if any water in the tubes running to the heating element. My conclusion of why it was overheating and tripping the switch. I couldn't think of an obvious way to get water into the line but after some fiddling I realized if I lifted the water reservoir off the base and set it down again I could see air moving and a bit of water in the line. I keep lifting and setting the reservoir down until water actually started to come out of the spout. I then plugged it in and set it to the coolest temperature to minimize how hot the water needed to get. Works perfectly. So if you have a Keurig and it has been sitting idle for a long time I would suggest lifting and reseating the water reservoir numerous times till you see a bit of water comes out of the spout. That should prime the lines and ensure water is available to heat and likely minimize the risk of tripping the switch. Note my unit sat idle for close to 6 months so I am not surprised the line was dry. Hope that helps someone.

    Usual when you descale the stream gets into the electronics and trips the switch. I've seen people buy pallets of these, fix them to resale. This switch is culprit 98% of the time.

    • @CarveTools
      @CarveTools  5 месяцев назад

      I had the same problem where I reset the thermal switch then it tripped again on the first try. I would reset it again and then plug it, fill the reservoir and initiate a descale cycle. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comments.

    PLEASE Help! I think one of my pumps isn't working or is not pushing the water through, I need to be able to test mine using the voltage supply, like you did, but I have looked everywhere and can not find the connector you have to go into the plugs for the pumps, the positive and negative needles looking connector thing. Do you know where I can find it or what it is called. Or if another connector will work?
    Please let know as soon as you can. Thank you!

      @@CarveTools Thank you, I finally found there name, took forever. But I ended up just testing everything with a 9v battery and a paperclip that was broken into two small pieces to make the connection, worked like a charm. Turned out that the pump had been plugged up, so the reason the safety button keep being tripped was because there was no water flow to the heating element and it would just get too hot right off the bat. At least that is how it had seemed. Knock on wood, but haven't had that safety button trip on me again since after putting everything back together. We used a small bowel with water in it, to test the water pump, and to eventually get scale build up out of there.
      - But a reminder, that this can be dangerous. Do these same steps at your own risk. But please make sure that you are always being as safe as possible. Always have the Keurig unplugged before doing any of these things. And Again, this is just what my fiance and myself did, I am not telling anyone else to do any of these things directly. And hope this comment was ok, Carve Tools. If you think it might not be a good comment to show than please feel free to delete it. But thank you again for all the information, I really appreciate all the help you have given!
