I don't understand all the negative comments. If you don't like the video, move on. I am absolutely certain there are folks out there getting some great beginners information. Thanks Model Railroader, keep em' comin'.

The problem is that bad information is being mixed with the good. When you drop your drawers in public don't be surprised when someone swats your behind.

One of my old model railroad layouts used a similar grass mat, and it's definitely good for starting out with. But nowadays I just paint the insulation foam in an earth-like color and sprinkle on the green ground cover materials on the areas where I want grass, and earth-colored ground cover material in areas where I want dirt.

I like all the comments from 'the experts', but David is doing a fine job. Thorough and attention to detail.

I think most of you are missing the point of the video. It says "Family Train Layout" - which is implying that they are using materials and techniques that a family with the most basic train set can build together with ease and little skill.

If you hold the blade to a lighter for a few seconds it cuts right through the foam.

Not bad for an easy family layout. I am going to do without the plywood and just use 2-inch thick insulfoam.

I have a lot of foam to cut and shape into scenery pieces, So, I was wondering, I have some Home Brown Latex paint, Could I mix that paint with a white glue, say PVA type to paint my scenery pieces the base coat and have it seal it also, so the next few colors won't soak into the foam so much, Also, can you paint Acrylic ontop of home Latex paint, with no issues of deforming details in the foam?

If the cement is applied to a chipboard and the green mat. Is the procedure for gluing them and removing wrinkles and air bubbles the same? Thank you.

Man, I think if perhaps you had rolled slowly the mat over the foam, keeping it stretched on the running threshold with the metal ruler, it might have come out smoother, idk...

This was a very good video, however after we got the green mat glued down, we came back the next day and the foam board WARPED significantly after the green mat was applied. Our family excitement turned into Fail. We still like the idea though and going to try a new Foam Board but no gluing. Our first attempt WARPED soo bad that even securing to wood board was so un-even and un-level the trains derailed everywhere. Any thoughts to anyone in the rail model community on what we can try to get applying green mat to foam board? And Not WARP?

try painting the foam board first with acrylic water based paint if you think that it was a chemical reaction between the foam board and the glue.

Very careful and No Warping used different adhesives. Also set weights on it overnight. Green Matt worked if you use sparingly and allow it to breathe.

Just a freindly reminder, this is a basic table style layout intended for children to use. There are many ways to skin a cat, so to speak, and with that said, there are a bunch of tools and methods to built it. This video shows just one of those methods.

If you lay tracks directly on a wood frame like this, it becomes a giant soundboard. If you want to reduce the sound, you need something like foam or cork.

One problem with this video is the pink extruded foam board or even the blue extruded foam board is not available in many areas of the U.S. I can not find any extruded foam board in my area of California.
