I'm surprised you didn't buy a pint or a quart of each paint with what you had to paint.😊

Good work!! Your layout is one of my favorites. Realistic and detailed scenery and realistic operations!!

Hello, your layout looks great. I'm currently in the process of doing mountains and painting them now on my layout. I really liked the color you achieved on your rock formations. Can you give any info on the mixing ratio of the colors you showed? Is it just achieved thru different washes of different colors? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.Jim.

Amazing I loved watching this video, I hope I can maybe get the tech to make foam look like rocks.... I just wish I had a layout I could be building but the place I live is only a one bedroom apartment and the wife says not right now, so I build dioramas even with no room to store them.. so I'm thinking of maybe selling them as well after I make them. I can't get enough of watching your layout come to life more and more.. wish we lived closer so we could get to know each other and possibly learn from you in person..

As basic as the foam is, the effect is stunning!

@railfan220 Your lighting looks great. I've been using some LED strip lighting, but I am not super happy with it and looking for a different brand. What are you using?

That was a great tutorial on the rocks. I don’t know how my comment from your last video from 5 days ago ended up here but it was true, I was really looking forward to the tutorial. Lol. I hope you had help cleaning up all of that pink foam on the floor. Your rocks and how you carve, color, and weather them are incredible. I’ll be watching this again and again. Thanks.

Hi. Just found your channel and have only been able to look at a few videos but really like your layout and your videos. Your rocks from foam are some of the best I’ve seen. It’s going to take me quite a while to watch all your videos but I’m looking forward to it. I have a question about your valance. What material is it? Is it Masonite or something lighter and more flexible? Thanks for any info you can give me. I will probably have more questions once I watch more ove your videos. Keep up the great work👍

You could also put in verticle cuts just wide enough to simulate where the rock was drilled for blasting. Still, what you've done looks as though you went out and brought back several pounds of real rocks.

I really appreciate you guiding us through how you make your rocks. I've just started and was dreading some of this work because I've never done it before. I'm modeling a stretch between Whitefish and Libby. You make it look possible without tearing my hair out! Thank you. This is amazing work.

  • @Quince828

That looks simpler than using moulds and casting plaster rocks that then have to be stuck on.

Nice video and super well done.
Would you know if Kingspan Brand Green Foam panels work for carving rock cliffs? I can get quite a few half sized 2 ft X 8ft sheets for free from a friend but must travel a semi-far distance to pick them up. Hoping they work well for carving rock cliffs.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, Phil! I'm pretty sure the green stuff will work just fine as well. I have green foam somewhere on the layout (I'm forgetting where right now), and I know I've seen others use it. Happy carving!

    • @railfan220

I make them. It's been a plan of mine to make a video of the process, but I essentially follow this method: ruclips.net/video/GZjo041fz1Q/видео.html. It's pretty quick and easy once you get your workflow setup. Hope that helps!

What kind of flooring do you have in your train room? It looks like some type of tile, like rubber tiles and it looks like you use an office-type chair on rollers. I'm trying to find something to cover my concrete floors to make it a little more comfortable to stand on, but that I can still use a similar chair when working seated, that won't tear up the floor. I'd tried the foam squares that interlock from Menards, but they were too flimsy. Thanks!

I went to Harbor Freight and purchased the interlocking floor mats for the walk paths of my room. They are firm enough to use wheeled stools and help keep the floor a bit warmer in the winter months.

@@andyevans2336 Thanks for the tip! I have tried some of those tiles from Menards, but they were too soft to roll around on. I will check out Harbor Freight.

Thanks for the video. I have a lot of rock work to do like you. Normally I carve plaster into rock formations but while effective it is very time consuming. I need to tryout you foam carving on some areas to speed up the process. As always great attention to geologic detail, faults and water runoff etc.
