BEST video on RUclips covering the subject. Mr. Rademacher is an artist of course, but the techniques are well within the skill level of most serious modelers. Looking forward to trying this process myself.
I found Alberts work fascinating to watch I will try to emulate his work but I’m not convinced my work will compare well to Alberts. Thank you for this insight.
i am just getting into this hobby (model trains and layouts,) and I will be learning and practicing my Technics for ever. i spent years doing the scale model aircraft! but man these guys are true artists. I was never really a fan of the computer and dont even own a cell phone as I am old school (an old fart) but thank god for the internet as we are able to learn and watch the true masters at work! VERY NICELY DONE!! A TRUE MASTERPIECE.
No lie, I been modeling for yrs and to achieve this look with foam is a lot of work. I would screw this up 10 times and up throwing it out. Incredible Job !!
I can never find thick foam blocks, so I make my own. The thinner 4' x 8' sheets of this material can be found at the hardware store: Home Depot or Lowe's, etc.. in the home insulation section. Cut them with a blade into smaller sheets, spread elmers glue on them and stack them into a block. Weigh the stack down with something heavy, and then after a day or so, you'll have a nice foam block to carve. This can be done with the blue foam sheets at the hardware store as well, just remember to peel off any plastic sheeting that may be on them. Good luck! (laminate process)
I really like your penciled in bridge and stone wall. I need a cinder block building for a diorama I'm working on and I believe the foam and pencil idea will work great. Thanks for the great idea...
He makes it look so easy... I am about to find out because I am starting my layout build. I have A LOT to do... I have built the bench work and have laid 1/2” foam board and that’s it. 20’ X 15’ X 22’ with a 5’ peninsula. No track plan because I gave up trying to write one. I am playing by ear with a good idea of how I want it to flow as well as what all I want on the layout (bridges, lakes, river, tunnels, mountains etc etc..). I have collected HO scale train items for about 35 years. I didn’t want to settle for a small layout. I wanted to wait until I could build a good sized layout. January of this year we purchased a 5800 square foot home and I have a entire room dedicated to the train layout I have waited 35 years to have. However, I have majorly over bought in those 35 years... I mean majorly... I have so much stuff that even I forget that I had things I find while going through it all. I have at least 300 engines, over 1000 rolling stock, buildings of all sizes & shapes, mining equipment, trucks, cars, people, I’m talking dozens on dozens of everything. It’s insane and a fortune money wise. I honestly became a hoarder of train stuff! I still have to watch myself from buying more stuff. It’s crazy! I have not counted all that I have.. It’s never all been out and put together to really be able to count everything. I still have many blue box Athearn Diesel engines in the box and have never been assembled (handrails, sunshades etc). They have the price tag on the end of each box of $32.95 or something. They have never seen a piece of track. So the good news is that train items hold their values really good. I will build my layout using what I need or want. I have no need to keep all of these items so I will sell a lot on eBay. I have many DC and many DCC locomotives. My favorite lines are Norfolk Southern, CSX and Clinchfield. I have a lot of Electromotive engines as well. I always thought it would be cool to have a Electromotive shop on my layout. I have all lines though and I really just like the main 3 the best. I do have all of the Heritage collection (I think...) I have several duplicates I know.. again it’s hard to know what I have and what I lack. I may lack 1 or 2 to complete the collection. I have kits that are already built kits that are long discontinued. I am sure I have many rare pieces in my collection. I have maybe 4 or 5 of the 4141 George Bush locomotives. I am literally just remembering things as I type here. I am not even sure how I got to rambling here but if you read this far then thanks for reading! 😂😂.
I love this handmade stuffs. I just love them. They are so nature and real. In 3D programs i also like when some is made by hand, not just some filters and ready shapes and pattern. Great video!
It helps to have a shop vac handy. It keeps the work area clean and saves the debris in a convenient place. Also, dry brushing (stippling) w/ acetone gives some cool textures. To bring in some other colors, you can use chalk here and there before painting.
Am assuming thos can be used for escaping under water for paludarium? Would the black colour leach? Not thinking of placing fish or animals. Only plants
Wonderful job. I only prefer the drybrush technique over the spray technique for the highlighting. I just feel its more controlable. I hope to see more of his work.
You do raise a good point but we have to rember nature is never perfect not one rockface is the same some are more on the black side some are the other way on the light side . We're I live in New Zealand the sandstone is quite a yellow the limestone is more of a white and the grey wacky faces are a very dark almost black look to them his way of painting would suit grey wacky rocks very well
There are some great techniques here, but there are a number of ways you can save money. 1) buy thinner foam and layer it to the basic shape. 2) the specialty glue is a waste of money. Use painters caulk, wood, or gorilla glue to join. You can use the lighter glue to hold the rubble. 3) use lower cost spray paint or if you have small compressor, thin down cheap acrylic paints from the craft stores. You don't need to spend so much money to get the same results.
3M Spray Adhesive 77 from any Home Depot or Lowes is the quickest, best way to adhere to large sections together, creating an almost "welded" seam, and it will NEVER come apart. Simply spray both surfaces you want to join then touch them together for fit, then press for a permanent bond. For sealing the rock face and priming it for paint, use Elmer's white glue, or wood glue mixed 50/50 with water. Sand as needed, and reapply glue. This is necessary if you want to use any "spray can" paints on your foam form, or else the paint will melt your detail. This is why he uses the black mixture, fyi. Elmer's can also be used to stick the loose rocks into the canyon areas, for a lot less money than craft glue. I mix the rocks into the glue mix, stir them up, then apply them into the areas I want, then pepper them with dry rock bits over top. His use of pencil as a way to detail the bridge is wonderful.
Hi great video, thanks. What do you use to glue the sheets together. I use polystyrene foam, the stuff used for packing and can't find an adhesive that doesn't melt the polystyrene.
fab great great, magnificent, this is one of the best video's I have seen (and I have seen a lot) It has given me so much inspiration of what is achievable with so few tools and equipment.
Wow. That is amazing. I wonder though, how long Albert has been carving in general, and with exuded foam in particular, to get this look. The stone bridge is simply the best.
I'm just guessing, but I bet it's harder than he made it look, to get realistic looking rock formations! Great video though, lots of really good stuff.
Thank you, We are in south dakota next to mount rushmore. I use any where from .05 , up to 3lb foam. just depends on the project. i use the polystyrene once in awhile. this is fun work when it pays. what do you make?
He uses a good tequnicue very realistic simaller way I do mine but I use a paintbrush and get the same effect . It's good to see a vedio like that one .
Is that just plain Styrofoam, being used for the rocks? Because I had some white Styrofoam recently, but when i broke it apart tiny lightweight pieces went everywhere. I don't think I had the right kind, because it seems that variety woudn't do well for carving anything.
Yep, they're different materials. One, the plain styrofoam is used for packaging and the exuded styrofoam used here is manufactured for insulation. They say either blue or pink. I've tried blue, but it is a very dense material and I found it difficult to work with. I'm trying to find the pink. Maybe it is a bit softer?
Hi, we love your video. With your permission, we'd like to post this on our social media pages and credit you / link your account. Please let me know. Thanks.
You mix the paint thin enough so it can spray out of the nozzle. Only a small amount of dish soap is required as it acts as the bonding agent for the acrylic paint.
I take my hat off to this true artist, I only wish I could be so artful. I had real enjoyment watching this video.
Really it isnt that hard . To be honest you can made rocks using aluminum foil molds that look good. This is just way to much work

One of the best ways that I have seen to make realistic rocks faces out of styrofoam one youtube. I also think this is the easiest and quickest way.
FANTASTIC JOB ALBERT !!!!!!!!!!!
Underrated artwork. This is mind blowing
Fantastic! What a great looking piece of work. Masterful!!
Rembrandt of scenery, wow!
AMAZING. ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could never do that. a real treat to watch thank you.!
I just love this tutorial Thanks for sharing it 👏🏻👏🏻👍👍
Astonishing how good that is. What an awesome technique.
Really nice work !
That was amazing! I was 2:30 into the video and inspired, awestruck and terribly jealous. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the tip.
Great tip….Houston here getting ready for Halloween. Gonna try this. 2023
fabulous techniques, looks great!!
That was TOTALLY AWSOME!!!
This is a beautiful piece of work, and shows that we could all do this sort of work. Many thanks from the UK!
I really like your penciled in bridge and stone wall. I need a cinder block building for a diorama I'm working on and I believe the foam and pencil idea will work great. Thanks for the great idea...
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise sir 🙂
Now, to continue on my own diorama....

I agree because this looks terrible.

Professional,respect from Russia!
Well done mate!
Thanks sonny. I think this kind of creation is amazing!
Absolutely amazing, thanks for sharing.
That was nothing short of incredible! I would have liked to see the finished diorama with the foliage and track.
This was an awesome video, some very helpful tips. Very realistic, thank you!!!
I enjoyed every minute of this...
Thank you of sharing this video.
Incredible!
How are you gluing the blocks , what about Phenoseal as an adhesive?
hI jIM, where do you buy your pink styrofoam blocks?
Can u use acrylic pain?
When do you glue the pieces together? Before or after you carve them with the hot knife? Before or after you glue them together?
Mad friggn skills. Foam is the hardest to make look realistic.
Excellent presentation!! Very usable idea. I would call this the best idea for mountains.
Dave, I always wondered what your voice sounded like.
This man is talented very realistic brilliant job 👍
Great work. Easy and effective!

Tesa is definitely not specialty glue. It is as common as old fashioned Elmer's. You can buy it everywhere here in Europe.

magnífico.... espetacular.... uma verdadeira obra de arte!!!!!!!
This is amazing! Congratulations!
Very cool 😎 I love it
what kind of foam is he working with and where would be the place to acquire it in the US?
I don't see that anyone answered your question. The type of Styrofoam is available at Lowe's and Home Depot in the US.
sonnyl966
I believe it is the "Owens Corning" usually used for insulation. Owens Corning is the PINK colored Insulation.
Wow fantastic results. Thanks for sharing
Sehr schoen gemacht!
Hi great video, thanks.
What do you use to glue the sheets together. I use polystyrene foam, the stuff used for packing and can't find an adhesive that doesn't melt the polystyrene.
Very NICE. If you put bones and rusted cars and such on this it would be a great WWIII piece.
Awesome stuff. LOVE IT
What mixture u applied on foam ? Is it water proof
How does he mix the pigment, whats the formula ?
fab great great, magnificent, this is one of the best video's I have seen (and I have seen a lot) It has given me so much inspiration of what is achievable with so few tools and equipment.

Just got this on my recommendations
Spettacolare.....sei veramente bravo
Real lovely, thanks for sharing!
I'm painting a ww2 model of a factory building made of styrofoam, what kind of spray paint can I use that won't eat the poly?
great video and great information to try on my track and landscape
Hi, you yuse acrylic paint ?
Hey dude, where can i buy pink styrofoam in that size? everything i find is only 1-2 inches thick
I'm just guessing, but I bet it's harder than he made it look, to get realistic looking rock formations! Great video though, lots of really good stuff.
Amazing! it looks beautiful!! I wanna try this! the black pigment is acrylic? Ruber paint? What kind of paints is he using?
Where can I get those larger blocks of foam. All I can get at hardware stores are 2" thick max. I am making miniature sets for films
There's only one thumb I can press .......but this video deserves 5 stars and 2 thumbs up
we have two thumbs
Added to my favorites, might use some of his techniques. Absolutely amazing!!!
DC
hello are you selling just the painted kit?
Any insight on what sort of spray paint is being used here?
He mentions that it a pigment in water and liquid soap
Thank you, We are in south dakota next to mount rushmore. I use any where from .05 , up to 3lb foam. just depends on the project. i use the polystyrene once in awhile. this is fun work when it pays. what do you make?
Wonderful job. thanx
This is amazing! I hope you don't mind, but when I close my eyes, you sound just like Frosty the Snowman!
Great job, what is this stuff, foam?
Wow amazing🔥🔥🔥
He uses a good tequnicue very realistic simaller way I do mine but I use a paintbrush and get the same effect .
It's good to see a vedio like that one .
which colur u use for coluring foam??
This is fantastic, so helpful, thanks for posting this
The foam used is normal foam/ any particular ?
Pls guide.
Thank you
boner
Anyone know the brand name of the paint?
Amazing work there my friend I plan on doing this for some 1/6 scale figures
I like you work!
Where can I get the tint in the black base coat?
What type of paint do you use?

Amazing. I enjoyed watching. Very talented.
Amazing, can be in a movie.
How is it possible that no one asked what the mix ratio of paint, water, dishwasher liquid is for the base paint??
I was about to ask the same thing! I understand the paint and the water... but why the liquid dish soap?
You mix the paint thin enough so it can spray out of the nozzle. Only a small amount of dish soap is required as it acts as the bonding agent for the acrylic paint.
Where would someone buy these foam bricks? I looked at the online hobby lobby and online micheal's site and I don't see them D=
Dish soap is a suffricant and breaks the surface tention of the water so it does not bead up. Only use a tiny amount or paint can become tacky
great work!

Where do you get that styrofoam?
very nice work thanks
I have much to learn thank you for sharing.
Very nice.
