- The most important aspect of a model railroad, especially a modular model railroad is getting the modules to line up perfectly... and that starts with foolproof benchwork!
In this video I'll be stepping you through my method for building awesome modules that fit together perfectly every time.
This is a series of videos that will progress right from step one which is planning all the way through to adding scenery and running operations on your layout.
For those wanting to check out part one, and get started following the series be sure to check out the written article here: www.bouldercre...
Hello and welcome, this is a new series of videos that will describe and demonstrate the process of building a model railroad layout from start to finish.
For more info and to read the articles for Part 1 and Part 2, you will find it here:

Build A Unstoppable Train Diroma!!!
This is going to be EPIC!
I visited the site and only Part 1 link is active. Part 2 says "Comming Soon." It appears to be an active link but nothing happens when I click it. Part 1, BTW, is very good and useful.
Just looking how to do model railroad benchwork.
so excited 😮
Hey Luke, I always love all of your stuff, but I'm personally very excited to see you doing a model railroad series. Thanks for sharing.👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Ron, yeah I've wanted to get back into building a proper railroad for a while now! I can't wait to get trains running!
I've watched you for a long time Luke and I must say, your work is awesome! This series is a very easy way to build a layout, you have always explained your work in a way that anyone can understand. Thanks for all the great work and PLEASE, keep it up!
Thanks for these videos. I'm working on a modular layout myself. I've built benchwork as essentially tables made out of CLS. I then made sections that rest on the benchwork using similar alignment dowels as the table "top". Each section is 50cm wide and 1.2m deep, which is far too deep to be within arm's reach for working on scenery, and that's why I made it modular; so I can slide each table top section in and out to work on scenery etc. I've only made a couple of the table top sections so far.
Awesome, the builds in a layout!!! Look forward to what’s coming down the line.
oh man so happy you are back and we all hope for more videos!!
This is fantastic. It is so good to see the complete process. I can’t think of anyone more qualified than you to do this. Excellent, THANK YOU for your wonderful content.
Thanks for your fantastic comment, I hope you enjoy watching the layout come to life 😊
This is one of the most exciting moments for online modeling
commenting to boost the algorithm. cant wait for the next parts of this series!
Nice video as usual. I’m waiting for the next one, and I already noticed good ideas for modules alignment. Thanks!
This was great! Even without ground work it is very impressive and the construction is neat and precise. Thanks for sharing this.
Love this!
I was wondering if you made full layouts. I like the modular design, one consideration is that the guide pins and rails need to be spaced evenly on all modules if you plan to reduce the size or add new parts later.
For years I have wondered why you haven't built the most epic model train layout known to man, I'm not even going to try to describe how exited I am for this series!
Looking Forward to such a large model :) I know it will look absolutely amazing!
Thanks mate, I really hope it comes together as I have imagined it 😊
I have been waiting for this for years. So exited! Your dioramas are flawless and I've always wanted to see something like that put together into a larger layout.
Precision even in places not seen, I expected nothing less from you Luke. I look forward to more videos on this project.
Luke towan feet reveal 💯 🙏
Oh no... forgot to wear shoes again 😄

JAIL 😭🤣💀💀
This is going to be a great series to watch - looking forward to it 😀
Amazing! I think this is the moment that we've been all waiting for :) Your scenery builds are always a delight to watch, but a whole series about building a complete rairoad track is some top tier stuff :)) cheers
This is cool. All the dioramas you've made over the years have made me wonder what they would look like with a train setup. Thanks for this, Luke. Look forward tp the next segment.
This is the video that I have been looking for all along
Awesome, I hope you enjoy the series 😉
Ikr!
It's as if all the planets are finally aligned, eh?
Some really good ideas here! Thanks for sharing. I would recommend however, that you do not glue the plywood subroadbed to the risers. I have done that and regretted it every time. I find it better to use Craig jigs and screws to screw up through the top of the riser into the plywood. This eliminates the need to glue and countersink holes on the top of the subroadbed. If you need to move your subroadbed or make a change you have no way of getting to the Craig screws without cutting your subroadbed off. Then you would have to start all over again. Just a tip from my experience. I LOVED how well TiteBond wood glue held the subroadbed to the risers. I didn't even need screws as the glue joint was stronger than the wood! However, when I needed to make a change, I was out of luck and had to cut the top off and start again. Trust me.... don't do what I did.
Suggestion: When making the jig for the alignment jig, you could have made the jig to hang off the top of the bench frame, giving you an easier way to get a uniform hole height AND, not have to use the drill to line up the jig. I would have also made the jig wider, so it could be butted up into the corner of the frame, giving the hole a standard distance from the edges of the frame as well. No Third Hand (TM) needed.
HELL YEAH LUKES BACK!!
Ive been waiting for this series ever scince you made those really old videos about benchwork!! Looking forward to this series as it proggress!!
Great to see you building a layout again. My introduction to your channel was about 8 years ago when I was researching how to build benches and have learned so much about scenery from you since. As it happens I’m starting another layout after a house move. Open frame but not modular. Keep up the good work.
*Luke only cooks with water!!! If you insert the baseboard alignment dowels too deep, the two pieces will not meet exactly and you will still have end play between the modules. And if you drill too little, you have a distance to the modules. Just as a little brain teaser. In my opinion, the modules should be fixed. Drill a hole in the diameter of the threaded rod, threaded rod through, screw tight and you're done. First, cheaper and second, less work.
Luke, but that's not meant to be a criticism of your great videos, which have already given me a lot of joy.
Best regards, Detlef*😍😍😍
What if.... all these years the models Luke's been making were just a small part of the bigger plan, and this is the final part to that plan!!!
This is a VERY welcome change to your video series and I’m quite excited to see the remainder of the videos! I’m also hoping that you chose the “modular” design so that you can continually add more modules (and thus, videos) with new ideas.
More model train video please , i really enjoyed it ( especially the 3D model train video that you make 2 month ago )
I'm glad you like them 😉 this will be an ongoing series so there will certainly be lots more!
Fantastic video! I agree completely with the 600 mm depth of your layout. I once tried a layout that was 800 mm deep, and although I could make that reach over the bare sub-roadbed, once I had scenery and buildings installed, the reach was too much - and I am 185 cm tall.
I have 18" radius curves at both ends of my layout. I made sure to provide a transition curve at the ends of the curves - this helps ease rolling stock into the tight curves. I am still limited to 65 scale foot long passenger cars and 4 axle locomotives.
Looking forward to the next installment!
Great dtuff Luke but should there not be one male and female dowel on each end rather than what you did…ie 2 males and 2 females on each end?
is this a true blue fair dinkums Aussie railway? lol love your videos mate.
knowing Luke and his skill level this will be one of the most realistic looking layouts not only in Australia but the entire world I cannot wait to see the finished product
fasten your seatbelts people this series is going to be the most epic builds known to man woman and child
Just started my first layout in N Gauge.
Looking forward to this series 👍🏼❤️
Thanks Luke
I’m looking forward to seeing how this comes out, I can only image that it’s going to be spectacular!
Pocket Screws and 19" radius. 19" is rather larger for N scale :) I do box frame benchwork myself. I 3D printed (FDM) locator buttons and sockets for my drop down bridge. They lock into place very solid, much the same thing as locator pins, but larger.
Yeah, N scale certainly has its advantages 😄 I didn't really think of 3D printing locator pins... Although I only have resin 3D printers at the moment and they are pretty bad for parts that get bumped and moved. Resin is so brittle, FDM would obviously be much better for that.
I was only ever really interested in this channel in the context of a full model railroad setup - so I am beyond pumped for this series!!
I’m so glad to see you embarking on a layout construction project. I’ve watched all your videos and am so impressed with your skill and attention to detail. Needless to say the bench work is superbly built and I look forward to seeing the landscape evolve over time. Thanks for the inspiration you give to us all- Glyn
Thank you Luke, you're videos are always incredibly interesting. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
Hey Luke. Look forwards to keeping up with your new layout. Given your fantastic skill it’s bound to be an amazing layout!
A superb masterclass in carpentry and construction and so very useful as a guide to starting a layout - thanks for sharing and shall really look forward to watching the whole series.
Super😳👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
What? You don't have 3 hands....lol. Nice to see a model train layout construction from start to finish. I can't wait to see the amazing scenery! Thanks to Luke for the great content 😁
Cheers,
Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)
Very solid construction! We're eagerly waiting for the next instalments in this series!
Really excellent construction, Luke! It's looking great and sturdy! 😃
I'm definitely looking forward to the next step!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I'll be honest, the baseboard building is the main thing holding me back from progressing with my own model railway project, because I *know* it's super easy to mess things up that'll have knock on effects down the line (no pun intended) but I also know that I'm lazy and impatient which will likely end up with me rushing things.
Luke. I reckon you’ve changed. Just you say adjustable feet for an uneven floor (can’t believe there are any uneven surfaces in your house) and then 10 secs later you say it doesn’t have to be perfect! 😂😂😂😂 Has your twin brother taken over the channel!!
Amazing 🤩 super like, have a nice day! Greetings from Brasil 🇧🇷
Wow!!! Your woodwork skills look absolutely amazing!! Everard junction brought me here. Certainly lots to take away for my fledgling layout. Subscribed 👍
You have a really great project. Your creative potential seems limitles 👍👍
This is very nice! Looking forward to the next episode! :D
Thanks for the video!! - Handy tip - You can drill the dowel pin countersink FIRST then drill the thru hole, that'll speed things up.. If you have a drill press you can do all the operations for the end board dowel pins on the press (and use an alignment jig), THEN assemble the module grid assemblies. Everything will still line up perfectly.
Ok this is gonna be good! I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Cheers!
Always been waiting for a layout build!!!! Can't wait to see the finished product!!
Hello Luke, another excellent video 👍.....will you be incorporating you dioramas from your previous videos into this layout?...... Keep up the good work, always a good day when I see a new video from you.😎
you should go to Germany - Hamburg - Miniaturwunderland and teach them youre knowlwge....
Hello! I've been following you for some time now. Your work is simply incredible! Soon I'm going to start putting together my railroad model and you're inspiring me and helping me a lot! Thanks!
Everything seems so simple, and flawless in your videos - then I thinkin of my dexterity... :D
Any reason you decided to put both 'male' connections on 1 side and female on the other, rather than a Back/Front or Left/right approach, that'd allow you more flexibility in moving/swapping modules?
(I know nothing - just curious)
Congrats ! You're doing things perfectly as usual. This is the point not many modelers can reach. It only takes good planing AND time. Always a pleasure to watch. Sorry but I have to ask you again (no offense here) : The industrial chimney... Would it be possible to get plans or something. Having it printed is not an issue. Everything can be negociate here... I truly like it a LOT ! I'll understand if you can't. Just asking here.
I hope the Subway Diorama find a way to live in this Huge new Projekt of yours, maybe as a little Easter Egg, but therefore it need an extra cutout
I am considering building a modular model railroad and this benchwork is beautiful.
Hey Jimmy! I heard you talking about some changes you have coming, I was listening to you on the Second Section Podcast! I only got a little way into the beginning of the podcast before I had to go to work! I've got it saved to finish watching later.
I hope you film a series of videos on it as well... we can compare notes 😉
G’day fellow Aussie love your progress I’m about to unveil my cricket ground I have been building while the ashes have been on lol been distracted on the model airport as per recent vids but we return to the layout shortly and the cricket ground is sure to blow some socks off it’s what we all do here in QLD I suppose stay safe see you in the next one.
The tracking of the words is an awesome touch!
Hey, Brother! Good to see you back. Your dream coming true, finally. If I'm going to relearn old tricks, I can't think of anyone else I want to watch doing it. I'm on layout no. 6. No. 5 was changed so many times, it just wouldn't meet the satisfaction standard any longer. This one is modular, but the modules are bigger, capable of fitting into my 5'x8' trailer. I haven't worked on it at all for several months as I am now the scenery guru for the Monterey & Salinas Valley RR club.
You haven’t been posting much lately. Now we can see why. I’m (we) are looking forward to this series.
Will be looking forward to more videos.
Super video. Luke you have a good skill and I enjoy watching the videos. From nothing to amazing. Looking forward to the next instalment. Thanks
This certainly looks like the Rolls Royce of bench work.
Mine is much simpler: two adjoining tables, but they can be separated into legs and baseboard. I put a layer of 5cm / 2inch foam on top below any track to allow for canals and rivers, giving me about 4.5 meters / 14 ft of scenery depth irl.
I'm doing the mental planning homework for my next layout that i want to take the modular approach on and then I found this! Can you provide a link to the adjustable feet? My layout space has an uneven floor so those are a must.
This video is just what I was looking for. I rent and know I will probably be moving at some point in time. So I want to start my new layout with this in mind. BTW I model in N scale in Pennsylvania, USA. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions. Take care!
Luke -- please share drawings or plans for the benchwork. Especially interested in how you support the upper deck or lighting deck, and the angled brackets. How much weight will those brackets support -- enough to support a two-deck layout?
Sorry if this has already been asked and answered... What thickness ply are you using on the back board please?
Thanks so much Luke, looking forward to the next video….i hope you and your family are all well….take care from South Africa
Can you recommend any books that can get you started with model rail, almost like a babies first diorama, step by step?
Finally Luke. Ever since I started to watch your Chanel I’ve wanted to see a full model railway by you. (Your N gauge one was years ago!)
I'm looking forward to watching this complete build!
Should we assume that this is your new and improved version of building modular benchwork? Your video from eight years ago ruclips.net/video/7St1jVmuV2M/видео.html, that never had a Part 2, is very different than the design you have shown here. It would be informative to know any flaws from your previous design, and how you came to making these changes? For one, using high quality dressed pine for the main module parts, instead of plywood?
Hello Luke. Love your design for the module benchwork with the overhang to give a more finished almost shadow box appearance that allows for lighting etc. I have been searching for a similar design for a small free standing shelf layout I am planning, but all I can find is wall anchored construction. I have been playing around with sketches but haven’t developed a plan to achieve what you have. By any chance, do you have or are willing to share drawings or plans that show the construction from back of module up to and including the overhang and how it fits together. I would be willing to purchase plans as well, as I’m sure you invested a fair amount of time developing the engineering for your work. Thank you and I can’t wait to see how this layout progresses.
Very nice work done. Will you be adding some of your completed structure on this layout ?
Hi, I love this video and it comes at the perfect time. We are planning our layout and bench work and this is very helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience
Couldn't you have uploaded this video 3 weeks ago? I've just started a modular layout for N scale to be able to set up and take down as required.
This might have helped.
Mui elegante va ser este proyecto! Tus vídeos con dioramas son de clase alta ,este proyecto va ser también de lujo,un saludo ✌️‼️
This was perfect timing for me. I just decided to do a layout with the closed loop ends just like this. Any way I can use your track plan?
Wow! How long I've been waiting top see the building of a railroad on bouldercreek railroad! Hot stuff!
Love your work as always!
Im working on a modular layout myself.
One section will have a real running water waterfall using a mister at the water source to give the illusion of scale white water. Its incredibly effective!
If i were to issue you a challenge, id say attempt what im trying with real water for one of your modular sections. Youre skill would make a mind-blowing scale waterfall!
Waited for years, for a whole layout series
Great 'how to' Luke!! Thanks for sharing this video! Cheers Onno.
You are starting a great project. I really respect you.
Looks really awesome, can't wait to see more. My poor layout got to the foundation level then nothing has happened for 5 months. I think I need someone to look at it and tell me if I am doing it correctly that's why I stopped. I must try to get restarted, maybe this is the motivation I need. Thank You.
I’m unbelievably hyped for this!!
Yo finally, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time now, excited for the rest of the series
Great video.
These days, that’s 1000 EUR for the wood only 😢
The legend is back! I cant wait to watch this series.
This is so exciting. Congratulations on the progress so far. I have a question - do you drill in holes for the screws while the wood glue is still wet or do you wait for it to dry? I have never worked with wood before, so I'm sorry if this is a basic question.
I really enjoy your channel and could not possibly emulate your skills. However I have one comment regarding the alignment method. I agree that the dowels will line up exactly but think that plywood would be a better option as it will not have any seasonal movement whereas pine does.
Actually a godsend man. I was hoping you'd make a tutorial like this
This has made me very happy! Can't wait to watch the layout build progress.
Looking good. Suggest that screws are never driven in from the top of the roadbed where track will cover them. Better to have screws on both sides if necessary. There will always come a day to later move track and you will be glad you didnt cover the screws.
Brilliant it’s this is very helpful as l embark on my own modular layout, looking forward to your layout coming to life
