    Great content as usual Tom. Most third party lenses fare pretty well in optical quality these days, it'll be interesting to see how they do in long term reliability and weather sealing. I had an all Sigma line up and ended up getting a GM 24-70 and GM100-400 because of build and sealing problems.

    Hello, I have a sony 35mm 1.8, but I would like something brighter. I don't want to put money into sony gm, I would like an alternative with decent performance. I'm thinking about this Samyang and the new version Sigma 1.4 Art. which is better to choose? mostly wedding photography and some snaps at the prom. thank you very much for the answer.

    Sony all the way in this contest. The extra money is worth it for better build, lower weight, smaller, proper aperture ring, smooth bokeh, better sharpness, less distortion, better resale value, and an all round sense of superiority when you whip ya GM out.

      I prefer the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which are just as good in optical quality as the Sony, but the Voigtländer are more solid, more compact and lighter, I rarely use autofocus, most of the time I use manual focus (99.99% of the time !) and I do not need aperture 1.4 !

      I am going to sell my Sigma 35mm 1.4 dg dn for the new Samyang 35mm. Just like the images a bit better. It is hard to tell, I believe maybe of micro contrast or so. The rendering is beautiful of the new Samyang lenses. It is also cheaper and I do not like the handling od the Sigma. I had thick fingers and the aperture ring of the Sigma is a bit sharp and can be annoying when holding the camera a longer time.

    Superb review! I liked the awarding of score with the green boxes, looked nice and very clear. You also captured all the main aspects when it comes to lens reviews. Your lab comparison pics were very good! They clearly showed the differences between the lenses. What could be improved about the video is that you could talk just a touch slower. And I would have liked to see a comparable image from the Sony to the one you showed from the Samyang at 4:14. But overall a really good comparison! (And I've seen a lot of reviews...)
    When it comes to the lenses I would argue that the Sony is noticeably sharper and has a much closer MFD whereas you only saw minimal differences. But okay, that's why it's so great that you made good comparable lab photos, so that everyone can see for themselves. Thanks a lot! :)

      Thanks Kai, appreciate the feedback and glad you enjoyed the video.
      You're not the first to comment about me talking fast, however, this is done intentionally to please the YT algorithm Gods and prevent people clicking away (and the date shows it's working), so unfortunately I can't do much about it. However, you can always adjust the video playback to x0.75 speed and that should help!

  • @jorismak

    I expect the issues you showed with the bokeh on the Samyang are a few 'worst cases', right? The real-world-image you highlighted with busy bokeh seems to come from heavy highlight-tweaking in lightroom which brings the problem in clear view.
    For the price it's still awesome, but I wonder if for _most_ people going with a 35mm 1.8 without the bokeh issues would be a better budget option?

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  2 года назад

      Yeah, like I mentioned in the video, it's only in some specific situations the bokeh "bubbles" are prominent. It's also important to remember that this is a comparison test, so I'm always talking about results within the scope of this specific test. In isolation, you probably wouldn't notice or care about it.

    I have the version 1 of the Samyang lens. Optically the version 1 and 2 are supposed to be the same. Besides the faster autofocus in the version 2 is there any reason I should upgrade to the newer version? I’m not a pro so my life doesn’t depend on the minutia of one lens being slightly better than another.

    I'd have to disagree with you on the sharpness aspect, to my eyes the Sony looks MASSIVELY sharper in the tests. Also if this lens was half the price of the Sony I think it would be well worth it, considering it's already in that high price range ballpark i'd have to say to me personally the Sony would be worth the extra coin, or at the very least i'd get a used Sigma 35mm 1.2 instead for the extra $150. I wouldn’t consider the Samyang used because of their notorious history with reliability.

    Think you missed a trick here not comparing the colours of both lenses. 2:07 - Look at those ugly skin tones on the Samyang - the model looks like he's sunburnt on his face. Also unsure how both can get a point for image quality when 4:53 shows clearly that the Samyang is softer than some of my lenses from the 80's in the corners.

    Lol. "Sony have slightly better sharpness"? Really? slightly? Sony just destroyed Samyang! 4:51 - its not a little bit, some kit lenses better than SY, 5:02 ageing. Its just totally different level. For 800$ Samyang must be at least with same sharpens or even better! Cheaper quality, worse AF and other things! NOT an objective review at all! good price its no more than 399! Sorry!

      That is absolutely not what I said - please do not deliberately misquote me, it's hugely misleading. I clearly said the Samyang is softer at the corners, which it is - at the center, the results are nearly identical, which they are. I also said at the end of the video that the Sony offers "the pinnacle of image. quality".
