The 35 GM is my 6th GM and easily my most used and favorite. The 135 and 70-200 ii are equally amazing but the close focusing on the 35 really changes how a 35mm focal length can deliver. If you’re a wide to normal lens fan, you’ll be amazed at this jewel
Got mine 4 days ago, haven't taken any "real" pics, just a ton of my dogs, handheld and indoors...and I am loving it. Super sharp and amazing low light performance
I have the 35mm GM and it’s my favorite lens. It’s the only lens I took on a trip to Italy and it was perfect: super lightweight, able to shoot in low light, able to capture a scene without being a wide angle lens. I agree with your review.
It's really hard for me to spend the kind of money it takes to get a lens of this calibre, but I took the leap. I'm happy that I did. I totally agree with you - It's a world-beater. It's a joy to use and it's results are uniformly amazing. It is amazing at f stops from 1.4 to 11. It has nice sun stars. It close focuses, which is nice but can also leverage that fast aperture. It has almost no distortions. The bokeh is awesome. I've noted that at the widest apertures there is some vignetting which is really nice too. Desert island lens.
I Love, Love, Love my 35mm, my go to lens. The lens is fitted to my A7RV and is my main piece of kit on every wedding, so sharp, fabulous! Absolutely love it!
Hi Majic. Thanks for the report on the 35 1.4 GM. I purchased this lens too and it permanently lives on one A7IV body. I love it! Your video was also an eye opener for me, regarding something I've been struggling with for a while. At 4:26 your vid shows the camera viewfinder info. It dawned on me that you are shooting Aperture Priority, Auto ISO, min shutter 1/250 (and you gave the exp compensation a + 1/3 kick as you are shooting into the sun). I am new to weddings and I struggle to change my settings quickly when moving from inside a venue to outside. eg. when the couple exit a church after the ceremony. I can't seem change the ISO fast enough so not to miss a moment, but the Auto ISO might be the answer. I don't know if you have covered this already, but a vid on shooting in this manner might be popular? Explaining your setting parameters and why? Thanks mate, keep up the great work! 💯
Absolutely right. Manual is overrated and works for lazy city walk or a stationary portrait session. Aperture priority with auto ISO and minimum SS is the way to go 95% of the time. Check Mark Galer videos on that topic (like "ISO Auto Min. SS - Sony's Best Custom Setting" though it's 5 years old now) - or anything Alpha, really. Tremendous amount of knowledge.
I want a 28mm GM lens to be made. I have 50mm f/1.4 GM and, for me, 35mm is too close to 50mm for it to make sense (I'm not a pro) to have both. A 28mm would give me a nice wide look without causing too much distortion for waist level portraits and even, a bit closer.
@@alexbucklandphoto It is a great lens, I'm sure of it, but I think it's a bit too specialized. I'll probably get a 28 f/2. I like the 50mm focal length, but I want something that would be better for indoor stuff when a 50mm is just too tight and you don't have room to step back. Then again, maybe the 35mm f1.4 Sony or Sigma would be good for indoors shots. Idk. Maybe I'll rent each lens for a week or two at a time and see what I find more comfortable/useful.
@@jasonbuckner8161I own the Sigma 1.2 and am wondering which you prefer in terms of image quality. Most comments about the Sigma 1.2 are regarding the size and weight but I am not really bothered by it too much. I care mostly about image quality. Curious what your experiences are.
I got my 35mm almost a year ago and I still love it. 30% of the time, I used this lens interchangeably with 55mm (but now upgraded to 50mm F1.2) but more than 50% I used the 24mm F2.8 G as most of our activities require climbing up ladders for project installations. I was just not comfortable bringing heavy glasses. But for dinners and other programs at school, I am very happy with 35mm.
Your videos and reviews on the Sony system is what convinced me to move over, and the 35mm GM was one of my first purchase and i love it. Like you I don’t use filter but i must ask how come you don’t use the lens hoods that has got me thinking?
Could not agree more, it is a perfect lens. I got mine after watching your initial review and comparison to the Sigma. It's on my camera 90% of the time now. 👌
Great review. Enjoyed it. I use a Sony 35 1.8 in a a7rV but I think this is the video that has convinced me to upgrade. Oh, I don’t shoot any video so the FB is a non issue for me.
I absolutely love this lens! There is something really special about how it renders images. The only small gripe with it is the focus breathing. It breathes so much that I feel like it’s not a real 35mm. Maybe more of a 35mm to 40mm or 30mm to 35mm, who knows. Perhaps not a problem but I’d like to shoot 35mm on a 35mm lens
I used to have the FE 35/1.8 when I came to Sony, but I was really looking at the GMaster that I'd like to get it someday. I had a chance to try it at some workshops and really liked what it can do. I've never really loved the 35/1.8 because I love to shoot a lot in backlit situations and it was the weakest part of the lens. Otherwise it was very reliable and also very affordable and lightweight. But this year I bought the GMaster and I use it pretty much all the time. It's very predictable and 100 % reliable in all circumstances. And also, I really love to use the aperture ring 😁
Still use the FE35 f1.8 and enjoy it. Sharpness amazed me, contrast is very good, bokeh smooth and I prefer the smaller size and weight. Only in very silent enviroment you hear the operation of the AF beeing close to the lens. Often thought of changing to the GM but could not find enough reasons to do so while comparing the two (and photos of the two lenses). So far...
Great video and crazy nice pictures, congrats on the skill! My 35mm 1.4 GM is not dead silent - I can hear elements moving - not loud, but I can hear it in silent room. Also I can always feel elements moving - as vibration is pronounced. Also it's not so fast and I often get images which are front focused (eyebrow instead of the eye) and sometimes it doesn't reach quickly enough to focus on my daughter why she moves around - this with AFC, tracking on, shutter speed 500+, wide open. So it's either my A7IV (with latest 4,0 fw) or this lens. I only have the kit zoom next to this one , at is ok in general - faster focusing for sure, although not as nearly as resolving.... So what do you think? Is it a dud - or do you maybe do feel some vibrations when focusing?
Thanks for this video. I’m saving to buy my first and hopefully, only prime. I often shoot at 35mm on my 20-70mm F4 which is a great lens but really want a prime with 1.4 or 1.8 for portrait and street photography.
Great video! 👏 I had this lens for a year and took some of my favorite photos with it. Sold it because of the focus breathing, which is still apparent with the breathing compensation. But recently found a new one on such a great deal and had to buy it again, this time I don't think I will be letting go of it even though I love my 24mm 1.4 GM too!
Sony 35mm f/1.4 is the lens that made me stop completely from buying other brands than Sony (after trying it, you realize how many problems the other brands have). The new recent Sony GM lenses from the last 3 years are simply perfect ! The complete rendering (colors, sharpness, bokeh) is amazing. I tried other lenses that I was interested about and they all went back to the shop… So be careful, you’ll become picky 😅 (and poor, but very happy ^^)
Not sure if it is just my copy, but I bought this lens brand new a few months ago, and I find the focus motor vibrating sometimes quite a bit more than my 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II or the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II ever do. The 35mm is the only G-Master prime that I own. Is that because the other two are zooms? It is not loud focusing and is fast; it just vibrates sometimes. I am curious if, for example, the 24mm f/1.4 GM or the 50mm f/1.4 GM do the same.
Mine vibrates as well. I can always feel when things are moving inside it. It also is not so fast to focus - and often front focuses instead on the eye, on the eyebrows of even further. When it does it focus - it's quite sharp and bokeh is nice. But AF is not fast nor silent, nor accurate enough. Accuracy wise it could be my A7IV - although its running latest fw 4.0...
@ArturoBandiniWannabe, thanks for sharing these. I haven't had any real issues with focus accuracy (also using it with an A7IV and A7SIII at times). It does happen that it doesn't find the eye in difficult lighting conditions, backlighting, etc., when the subject is underexposed, but the focus, though meant to be lightning fast and silent, has a significant difference compared to the 24-70, 70-200, or my newest addition, the 16-35, all GM II, in both focus speed and vibration.
@@laszloalbert1991 Thanks for the info. Just compared mine 35 GM to the 28-70 lens that came in the kit - both shot at 35mm and f5.6. Kit lens close to far and back focus is quite fast, dead silent and no vibrations at all, while this 35mm GM drags its feet between the distances and vibration is quite prominent. 35mm vibrates even with minimal focus distance changes. I don't know - probably some issue with the GM. I just didn't want to believe that, because when it hits pictures are very very nice - sharpness, colours, transitions to out of focus. Anyhow, I think I'll return it...
@ArturoBandiniWannabe Yeah, I am still debating whether I should return it or not because I am truly in love with its image rendering and overall character, but it really bugs me that every single review I watched before buying was praising that the AF is completely silent and instantaneous, but in reality, there is quite some difference.
Hi! I use 35 f2 sigma contemporary. It”s gorgeous!!! Agree with You about one brand setup. Have all my lenses by sigma. Maybe some day I”ll use all gm😊
I am happy for you. That is really nice lens and has beautiful "look" in the photos. I am still waiting (3 years by now) for my (I shoot Canon RF) 35mm f 1.2 L USM. Hopefully in 2024?
Magic!..same here I love my 35mm GM..I've had it since released..I switched from the Zeiss..35 1.4..that Zies was nice as well..haha my favorite go to combo for my pro work is the 35mm and 85mm GM's...I can't wait for that 85mm 1.2 GM!...already putting money aside for when that lens releases..haha that 85mm has also been my work hoarse..and it definetly needs an update..and it better be a 1.2..to compete with Canon and Nikon's 85 1.2's..haha
great review. I have a sony 35mm F/1.8 on my a7rv. there is a special discount on F/1.4 currently. Do you see a big difference between both lenses ? There is only one stop between both easily compensated by higher iso. F/1.8 was specified as new, fast, sharp lens with ony 280grams.
Hey Marc! Yup! I have 35/1.8 and it was my main 35 before GM. It’s lovely, but if you like shooting wide open - 1.4 will just give you nicer image (bokeh) and for me that’s something that makes difference especially when we’re talking 35 being my main lens
thank you ! I am almost convinced :-) i already have 50mm F/1.2 loving wide open. I am reviewing now all your tutos about these two.By the way, I love your magicadabra course and preset and flash course !
Thanks for the review, this lens will be my next photography purchase. One question, how is at 2:06, the ribbon bride's bouquet is moving in the breeze, but the water in the background is still?
35mm is a amazing focal leangth no matter GM or anything cheap all portrait photographers should have this. I use Sigma which is half of the price and gives nice satisfaction.
I had the Sigma 35mm 1.4 DG DN. Wide open, it was not very good especially with the A7RV. The GM 35mm is a beast wide open at 60mp and now it’s in my kit for pro work! The best Sigma in my bag, I will never part with, is the stellar Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN.
In my opinion Sony should add "The GM Flare" fliter to every GM lens which would add some crazy good flares when used. And that would be it my friends- the perfect generation of lenses.
Really thinking about upgrading my old Sigma 35mm 1.4 as it's not the sharpest and also very heavy. Even on my A7III it wasn't perfectly sharp, now on my A7RV I really feel like I need something sharper. Can buy this lens with €400 discount now so I guess I'll do it.
Magic, I love your idea of "two focal lengths" in one glass by switching between FF and APSC. For me, this 35mm is perfect for that. This convinces me to switch to compact FF setup. Pozdrawiam bracie! :D
Nice review, nice pictures! Thanks! I already own it and I love it as well ^.^ But didn't have as many occasions to use my equipment lately :-( Preferably I use it in a two camera setting together with a 85mm lens (for event stuff... if it's a photoshoot time is less important so yeah...)
Hey! 35/1.4 is going to get you image that you won’t be able to get with 16-35/2.8. Shallow depth of field on that wide angle look. So it does depend on - are you after the look of the image or are you after the range of zoom 16-35.
Hello. What would you choose between 35mm 1.4 and 28-45mm f1.8 from Sigma? Please, if you can answer me, I am very indecisive and it would help me to find out a preference of yours.
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer Thank you very much for your reply, I really appreciate it. You are right, I also have an affinity for 35. Have a nice day, thank you.
Thanks allot for sharing your thoughts and experience with the 35mm GM. I have been using the Sigma 35mm 1.2 Art since it was announced since 2019. Spectacular lens, really love it, except, it's absolutely giant 😅 To be honest, I have really been considering getting the 35mm GM, but my A1 does not have focus breathing compensation, and the Sigma 35mm 1.2 Art does not focus breath. Sticking with Sigma for now, if I wasn't shooting video, I reckon the switch to 35mm GM would have happened.
I also use the Sigma 35mm F/1.2 Art and love it a lot. I do only photography for now and currently use an a7R IV. I am thinking of switching to the 35mm GM but I just don't know if it is going to be worth it for me. I am wondering whether I would miss the F/1.2 as I feel it is something special. The size and weight never really bothered me. Curious whether you used the 35mm GM before and what your thoughts are!
@@JvHB97 Sigma 35mm is a really great lens. Have not compared it to the GM, from my understanding, they are very comparable in terms of sharpness. The main reason for me considering 35mm GM, was to save weight. If the heft of the Sigma is not a problem, I would stick with it 😊
Currently got the 85 GM and was looking to pair it with either the 35 GM or 24 GM. Sometimes the 85 GM feels too long. Guess 85+35 or 50+24 would be a great combo. Cannot decide which to go for 😅
I agree on plastic vs metal. I have the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art an amazing lens but wow it looks like I've towed it behind my car. Chips all over it and I am kind to my lenses. All my GM lenses including this 35mm look like new. As for sharpness the my 35gm 70 -200 mkii GM and my Sigma are all on a par all razor sharp. My 24-70 F2.8mkii is also sharp but does not give me the wow factor of the other three I have mentioned. I am praying Sony bring out a new 85 f1.4 and not just a 1KG plus f1.2
I got mine about a year ago and so far pretty happy. About 25-30k images so far as it’s my main workhorse for concerts/festivals in super low light/at night. Only downside: the rubber gasket got shredded after about half a year, don’t know how. service told me it would take 4-6 weeks to repair (it’s 4 screws lol) so I’m still holding on and will do in the off season. Only comparison I have is the Samyang (rokinon) 35 1.4. v1 was okay, not as sharp and fast as the GM but decent for the price (300-400€). V2 was horrible and made my a7iv crash that I had to take the battery out so that one went straight back to Amazon
Use my 35 1.4 GM as my walkabout lens. Nothing to come close. Had the sigma equivalent 35mm and whilst a good lens it won’t ever be as good as the Sony GM. Sharp throughout the frame and great colour rendering. Samyang was a no go for me as the last one I owned dropped to pieces. The Sony Zeiss 35mm is poor by comparison.
Have you ever used a Olympus M43 or something that to weddings? I guess not, but could you try once to do that and share a opinion? And actually what would be your statement on that with their f1.2 primes? :D
I left the Sony system for the Canon R system. I am still missing the Sony FE 35 GM. It is a shame that after 5 years into the R system, Canon still does not have a respectable 35mm lens.
I have no problems what so ever owning and using Lenses of different brands, I own and use Sony GM Lenses, Zeiss Lozia, Zeiss Batis, Sony Zeiss and Voigtländer APO-Lanthar Lenses. I will not get the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM because I am tired of bulky Lenses and I do not need autofocus and I do not need aperture 1.4, so I use the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 which is built like a tank and it have outstanding optical image quality, I can very highly recommend Voigtländer APO-Lanthar Lenses.
Sony cameras are not in my circle of interest since I don't like their ergonomics. The 35mm I'm waiting for is Nikon 35/1.2s 😀 My experience with presets is they do not do magic 🙃 You have really good images to start with so the post processing is like topping the cake with a cherry.
The 35 GM is my 6th GM and easily my most used and favorite. The 135 and 70-200 ii are equally amazing but the close focusing on the 35 really changes how a 35mm focal length can deliver. If you’re a wide to normal lens fan, you’ll be amazed at this jewel

How does this compare to Sony 35mm F1.8?
I can feel the autofocus. Is my lense ok?
Indeed it's a great combo with 50 1.4GM/1.2GM:D Love them both
Do you have both 50GM 1.4 and 1.2 👀👀👀
Thanks for the review, this lens will be my next photography purchase.
Agree!!
Very helpful video, but it left me with one question: what are these mysterious non-perfect lenses you enjoy using? Pray tell!
Would the g master with same aperture but 20_70 be better or is this ? I have a 70 200 for micro
I want one Gmaster lens you sold me on this lens
Are GM lenses also color matching with the 1.8 lenses?
Nope they don’t
@@Chris-w9m8e thanks for the answer. Do the 1.8 lenses color match within their range?
The GM is a great lens for photo. It sucks for video because of the focus breathing. The 3d pop is crazy. It's light so you can take it anywhere.
Nice review, nice pictures! Thanks!
I already own it and I love it as well ^.^ But didn't have as many occasions to use my equipment lately :-(
Preferably I use it in a two camera setting together with a 85mm lens (for event stuff... if it's a photoshoot time is less important so yeah...)
Damn!! That ankle at 08:48 gives me goosebumps 😖
Which lens did you use to shoot this video :)
Shall I buy 35 mm f 1.4 gm or 16-35 mm f/2.8 gm?
Hey! 35/1.4 is going to get you image that you won’t be able to get with 16-35/2.8. Shallow depth of field on that wide angle look. So it does depend on - are you after the look of the image or are you after the range of zoom 16-35.
look :D @@MagicWeddingPhotographer
@4:36 min into clip what is that Green signal lower left sometimes it's just a Green dot ???
Hello. What would you choose between 35mm 1.4 and 28-45mm f1.8 from Sigma? Please, if you can answer me, I am very indecisive and it would help me to find out a preference of yours.
@@I0nut09 35/1.4 🔥
Cannot decide which to go for 😅
I'd get the 85, 35, 20G and never look back.
8:47 how did that end 😅
will this work with aps cam?
More 35mm videos to watch. Nice, keep 'em comin 😂
Next video 35 vs 35 vs 35 vs 35. Coming soon :)
what are the red crop marks on your screen @4:39 - something with the focusing mode? I don't recall seeing that wide of an area on mine.
8:48 whaaaaaaat, was this really THE decisive moment? :D
lol when you say onion rings 😅😂😂😂 good one!
I would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on using the 35mm up close on larger clients??? yes? No?
I love the 35 g master for sure but…. The 35 samyang 2.8 was always a dependable little lens that I think is underrated.
That zoom in at 8:48 😂
👀🙈👠👠👠
At about late 5 m he says ' he zoomed in' . How do u zoom in with a prime?
Switch the camera to APS-C mode
Is it too big for the A7cii. ?
@@photographerimages no. It’s not as compact as 35/1.8 or 35/2.8 but looks great on A7C2
What is your 2nd most used lens?
The 35GM has QC problems. Me and many whom I know have already been welcomed with decentered samples.
Have you ever used a Olympus M43 or something that to weddings? I guess not, but could you try once to do that and share a opinion? And actually what would be your statement on that with their f1.2 primes? :D
Hundreds of flashing images.
I had to stop watching your video after 40 seconds.
And no, I'm not epileptic.
All the dust particles in your background bokeh bothers me lol. 😅
I left the Sony system for the Canon R system. I am still missing the Sony FE 35 GM. It is a shame that after 5 years into the R system, Canon still does not have a respectable 35mm lens.
I used 35mm gm and compared it with sigma 35mm dg dn. Sigma won. On Same distance 1.4 aperture Sigma show more depth of field than Sony.
Of course it did🙄
I have no problems what so ever owning and using Lenses of different brands, I own and use Sony GM Lenses, Zeiss Lozia, Zeiss Batis, Sony Zeiss and Voigtländer APO-Lanthar Lenses.
I think this is more cheap than fuji 50mm f1.0.
Which lense are you filming with? I see some dirty bokeh (like the balls (that's what she said) have weird dirty on them. Example at 1:48.
This is good ol' 35/1.8 by Sony :) Known for quite substantial CA
i understand what you mean "too perfect"..i dont like it too, looks not real
Sony cameras are not in my circle of interest since I don't like their ergonomics. The 35mm I'm waiting for is Nikon 35/1.2s 😀 My experience with presets is they do not do magic 🙃 You have really good images to start with so the post processing is like topping the cake with a cherry.
for video is terrible...on SIII
Good lenses, but heavy focus breathing. No, thanks!
Not ideal for video unless you have focus breathing compensation, but I love the image quality so much more than any other lens I own!
never noticed any, as the body fixes it.
Doesn’t matter for photos
You don’t have focus breathing compensation on your camera?
This is funny to see a "review" of a 35mm f/1.4 lens [today.] Nikon had this type of lens over 60 years ago. Canon had one also about the same time.
Hey, i know you are trying to be smart, but you failed and become a smartass.
