Bro! You answered all of my answers of 35mm and one of my researched video samples are medium shots and you gave us that! Thanks Man! I hope a lot of people will find your channel.
Thank you for your kind words! If it helps, I ended up buying the 35 F1.8 because of the minimal focus breathing as I am a videographer. The size, price and weight was a huge bonus. If I was a photographer, I would lean towards the 35 F1.4 Sigma but can't go wrong with either of these lenses IMO
The 35mm f1.8 is an amazing lens for the price and size, plus it has remarkably low focus breathing which is a feature hard to find in even the most expensive lenses. In your test, for instance, the GM had veeery pronounced focus breathing, which can be pretty distracting for video use. I say go for the 35mm f1.8 ✌🏻
great comparison, well done. I onwed Sony 1.8, sigma 1.4, sony zeiss 1.4 and Tamron 35-150mm before...at the moment, I don't have any of them. personally I think for hybrid shooter like me who mostly do video, sometimes portrait photography. the sony 35mm 1.8 is a great value vs price. But for portrait photographers, the Sony GM f1.4 is the definite choice.
Thanks for your video! I got the 1.8 and thinking if worth to switch to the GM, after watched your video, I think 1.8 is the best choice for both photo and video.
Great comprehensive review! I would like to seek your opinion. Given my primary interest in photography, particularly in areas such as travel, street, landscape, architecture, and occasional portraits, which Sony lens would you recommend: the 35mm f/1.4 GM or the 35mm f/1.8?
Thank you for your kind words. I would say the GM would be better, but if your priority is lightweight, and affordability, I am sure you won't regret the f1,8 either. Hope this helps!
Dang I do close up videos. Sony f1.8 might be the way to go for me. Unless there’s a better competitor that can get as close or closer? Or if I just get a zoom lens, can I fix this issue?
The Sony 35 can get really close and nice shots with it for sure. However, if your sole purpose is to get close shots, this wouldn’t be my go to lens. I use the 24-70 sigma and use the 70mm for better close up shots imo. And of course the king of close ups would be the 90mm macro, which I do use as well. Hope this helps!
@@BernardLau1991 Well I’m holding the object right in front of the camera. So, although I have never use a camera, and I am only using a smart phone, I would think I don’t really need that much zoom. But admittedly, I do use the 3x telephoto SOMETIMES so I can zoom in on the table but that’s not as important. I can just move the camera closer towards the table at that point. I just need something that’s going to allow me to hold objects close to it like I currently do with my iPhone 13 Pro. I don’t know if you would be willing to take the time to check out a video to get an idea of what my videos are like but I want to have that same perspective. I’m just looking to get a new camera because the iPhone 13 like to make everything blurry. Like, even if I am holding a controller up to the camera, it wants to make the buttons blurry, but have the D pad and focus. I’m assuming it’s because of the f1.5 aperture. So in getting a camera, I’m looking to fix this by being able to adjust it. That makes me wonder if I even need 1.4 or 1.8. Maybe I could get away with something like a 2 for my use case. I kind of like a more subtle Bokeh in my opinion, it looks even better and more realistic. Some of the shots that people having these videos they just don’t look appealing to me because it looks like a green screen or it looks weird like it’s just an entirely blurry Vaseline image with a random tree branch coming out of nowhere lol. But maybe that’s the difference between photographers and somebody making videos like me where I just want to review the product and get the very best shots of the product I can so that somebody interested in the product can get a detailed look up what it’s like to hold it. I don’t need blurry edges or anything like that. Maybe in my eyes are getting bad, but I can’t stand that. Some people are showing footage samples of this lens of a child or something in like the arms of the child are blurry and then the face is coming in and out of focus and people are just going crazy about how amazing they think it looks and I’m like?? I can’t see lol
I mean it’s definitely a good lens and for f1.4, it’s as portable as it’s going to get haha. But personally, I purchased the Sony f1.8 for a few reasons. 1. Price. 2. Weight and size. 3. I do videos a lot and the focus breathing on the lens is the best between all lenses. Hope this helps!
If I were to buy one now, I will definitely go for the 1.8. But after this test, I enjoyed using the 35mm focal length but I dont think it was enough for me to get one 😂
@@electrichimp it is a versatile focal length but considering I have the 20f1.8 and the 55 f1.8, the 35 isn’t a top priority now hahaha. And the 24-70 pretty much lives on my camera and I have the 35mm covered for now. Aiming for the 85mm first and 35 only when I have the spare cash 😂
@@BernardLau1991 got it 👍🏻 well, maybe consider the 35mm f1.8 if you need something tiny with a truly flexible focal length. To me, the whole point of it is that I don’t need to swap lenses or carry a bigger zoom, it’s a focal length wide and tight enough for everyday use 🙂
i own Both 35 1,4 GM and 35 1.8 and there is no difference in sharpness i was so confused. and 1.8 is so small and compact. Image from 35 1,4 looks more simple and 1.8 has more art look. @@BernardLau1991 why ? Haha actually I own samyang 35 1.4 😂 so far the focus is very fast and accurate for firmware version 4. The only downside is the weight only, it is too heavy for my A7c 🤦

Samyang 35 1.4 ($500) is actually cheaper than Sony 35 1.8 ($650) in US. I picked up Samyang used for $380.
I still prefer the size and weight of the sony haha
