Gerald, check the philipreeve review, the 1.2 produces much better bokeh than the 1.4 despite only 1/3 stop difference. You buy the 1.2 for the magic bokeh. Not only is there more blur, but quality is better. Way too much time spent on sharpness, not enough at typical shooting distance. Instead, bokeh was an afterthought. The 1.8 should be first choice if only one lens.

I went from the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 to the Sony f1.8 and I don't regret it at all. The size and weight completely justifies getting the Sony over the Sigma for me. The slightly wider aperture and tiny bit better corner sharpness just isn't worth having to carry that extra size and weight around.
The more reviews I view on the 35mm 1.8, the more point in the direction, that it is the go to lens. I'm definitely getting this myself. One thing I have to notice with this video, is that Aperture, is the perceived size of the Aperture when viewed from the front. It is NOT a way to measure or compare light. We can argue that it has theoretical stops that make it supposedly faster, but Aperture values aren't T values and they shouldn't be mixed. Several low budget lenses at 1.8 have better light transmission than 1.4 lenses due to have less amounts of glass blocking light.

Quick question: The focus breathing tests (12m30s) show the Sigma's to have a jumpy quality (stepping). Was this test performed exactly the same on the Sigma's as on the Sony 35 1.8? My Sigma 24-70 2.8 definitely doesn't have such jumps whereas the Sony 24-70 2.8 GM has more of them. To me, the stepping quality of the Sigma's in your video would be a dealbreaker for video uses. Could you confirm wether the settings weren't different on the Sigma's for this test? Thx :)
The Sigma lenses generally manage a worse T-stop than the F-stop. Probably has to do with the long lens barrels with loads of lens elements that they use to get their impressive sharpness. The old Sigma 50/1.4 contemporary actually has a better T-stop than the newer Art 50/1.4
I just upgraded from a Sony a6000 to a7 iii, already had the Sony 85mm 1.8, sold my Sigma 18-35mm, and replaced that with a Samyang 35mm 1.4. I knew the shortcomings of the Samyang, but for $400, I'm happy with it.
Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art for Sony E-mount is NOT 660g. The Canon version is 660g, and Sony E version is 755g. Just check it here: www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/service/se_mount/ Roger Cicala from Lensrental analyzed the MTF of the newest 35mm lenses recently. Indeed Sigma 35mm F1.2, Tamron 35mm F1.4, Sony 35mm F1.8 became the king of their classes. Denser sensors make the lenses sharper and sharper lately. Sigma set the trend with 35mm F1.4 Art, and now perfected with 35mm F1.2. I thought it isn't possible or cost much higher, but Sigma managed it for even less than Sony 35mm F1.4.
Now from your opinion which lens is best for tattooing? 1.8 or 1.4 ? I take video and pictures so it’s hard to pick but I can only get one . Which one can perform the best?
I'm thinking of 40mm Art, and 40mm Batis for travel. The 35mm f1.8 is more portable but I'm unsure about all the CA. The Batis still has higher magnification ratio. 35mm f1.2 feels like a slightly lighter 40mm Art with f1.2 that's less corrected. How does 40mm Art and 35mm f1.2 Art's transmission and AF compare?
Picked up the Sony and love it. Was super handy a couple of nights ago at a concert. I was there to film basically on stage and it was so nice on the gimbal. Nailed focus 95% of the time, if not more like 99% of the time
in-depth and well-organized review! Thank you. i usually tap out at anything on YT over 10 mins but you're well worth it most of the time. Sony it is. (happy the smallest lens won - cannot stand to carry heavy monsters aropund) Cheers mate.
Gerald, I have the 16-35mm 2.8 GM, 24-70mm 2.8 GM, and the 35mm 2.8 zeiss. Is it worth it to keep or sell the 35mm, should I get another 35 instead, or which of the zooms would you sell? I don't do weddings ro paid gigs, I am using them for my youtube channel and use a gimbal too.
Thanks, we have a winner. I shoot video, don't click stills and I have been using Sony broadcast cams since 1988. Can you say M-7 with a roll cable to a portable 3/4" deck worn on your hip like a giant six gun while following police who were chasing bad guys in South Central LA back in the day, ha ha. I built out a FX6 as my all new Cops and Robbers ride-along camera, spectacular. I was searching for the right 35mm when I got the DJI RSC2... looked at the same three lenses (leaning to the Sony). Was good to hear what you thought. I was close to the same conclusion. You gave me a lot more info that I had dug up, being that i haven't gone hands on with any of them yet. I'm going with the Sony 35mm 1.8. Thanks Gerald. P.S. my Sony's have survived the most extreme conditions, including I.E.D.s and kept on ticking, lol.
Odd that you omit the Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 pancake lens in this comparison, a genuine bargain for the Sony system, the only thing between it and the Zeiss 35mm F2.8 is about $400 and marginally better build on the Zeiss, sharpness is very similar.
@@bazzie85 Did't say it would just commenting on the fact that Gerald talked about the F2.8 Zeiss but omitted to mention the excellent Samyang F2.8, which makes up for it's 2 stop disadvantage by being incredibly portable, cheap and sharp. As a discrete street shooter, even in urban low light, the iso performance + IBIS of the latest cameras makes it work a treat.
Wow! I watch a lot of photo/video gear reviews on RUclips and this was by far one of the best video I've watched! I love your thoughtfulness. I can see that you made a plan before shooting (e.g. before/after the firmware update), your explanations and the transitions of topics is seamless. Thanks for this great review and comparison, subscribed!
Gerald, as usual your videos are epic. From someone that has tried just about every 35mm focal lens available, I have to tell you that the best ever made is the new Tamrom 35mm f1.4.. as in, optical perfection, period. Unfortunately, its not available for e-mount and using it on my a7RIII with a Metabones EF adapter, drastically downgrades autofocus performance compared to anything native.. but thats the way it goes. If you have the opportunity to try it, you'll be enlightened. Thanks for the video and insight as always. PS - ..and I fully agree with you on the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f1.4 being tragic. I had one and was positively T H E worse 35mm lens I ever got my hands on, from any brand, at any price.. simply unusable at any f-stop. And I never touched Zeiss glass again nor have any intent to change mind :)
The best review I have seen lately. I had my mind made up, and you have confirmed it with arguments that I completely agree with. Thanks for your time and objectivity.
If possible can you please repeat this comparison using the A7r IV body? My experience is that lenses that has acceptable image quality when mounted on the A7iii become useless on the A7r IV.
Great comparison! I had a chance to use the Sony 35mm 1.8 at the Sony Camera Camp and really enjoyed it! I also used the 55mm 1.8 and ever looked back! 😂 completely forgot I used the 35mm haha! It's so light and nimble, especially on a gimbal! *bars*
This shows how good the Sony 35 1.8 is for the size and price. It's funny how Sony lenses are kinda underrated. And Sigma did shoot itself in the foot when they decided not to make a clear distinction between lenses designed from the ground up for mirrorless mounts and the ones that were simply adapted from old DSLR designs.

Perfect timing. I have been looking for these comparison among those 35mm lens. Thank you so much Gerald.
This review is amazing! So thorough, precise and to the point!
Just check it here: www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/service/se_mount/
Roger Cicala from Lensrental analyzed the MTF of the newest 35mm lenses recently.
Do you think the 1.4 would be too big for an A6400? Also does it need to be updated right out of the box?
Would you suggest that if weight and size don't matter the sigma 1.4 is the way to go?
Would you recommend the Sigma 40mm f1.4 for Environmental portraits over all the 35mm native lenses to Sony E mount ?
Have you ever reviewed the 50 1.4 planar? Would be really cool if you do in the future. :)
Splendid! I did tag along the whole schabang. Nevere got bored or fed up. And best of all, it helped me to by my new 35 :-) thx Gerald
Great video! I think I will go for the Sony 35 1.8 too. I believe size is the key decision point as price is pretty similar.
Super helpful also wondering if Sony is a better pick for Gimbal use like the ROnin SC due to lighter and shorter dimensions ???
Odd that you omit the Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 pancake lens in this comparison, a genuine bargain for the Sony system, the only thing between it and the Zeiss 35mm F2.8 is about $400 and marginally better build on the Zeiss, sharpness is very similar.
Anyone in the market for a lens that performs optimally in low light would not be looking at an f2.8 lens. It's too slow.
@@ceddo2511 fair enough.
Thanks for another comprehensive comparison. I'm left wondering how the Tamron 35mm f/1.4 SP would fare, if only it were available in E mount.
How do you only have 116k subs? Your videos are so informative, unique and you’re very likable!
Thanks, mate! I wish that Tamron would come in E-mount. 😃
The best review I have seen lately. I had my mind made up, and you have confirmed it with arguments that I completely agree with. Thanks for your time and objectivity.
Happy using my Voigtlander Nokton Asp II f1.2
Can you do a 40mm 1.4 vs the 35mm 1.2?
If possible can you please repeat this comparison using the A7r IV body? My experience is that lenses that has acceptable image quality when mounted on the A7iii become useless on the A7r IV.
@Tamron, please come in with a 35mm 1.8/1.4 without the buttons, the weight, the sony price, & a 67mm filter. Thank you.
When talking about sharpness, there should be no difference when shooting at 8MP (4K), right? Only when zooming in to a 24MP image or something...
B&H must've watched your video and put the Distagon on sale, and now it's a USD cheaper than the Sigma 1.2 Gerald... controlling the market!
