    Nice job comparing the two. I went with the Sony, size and weight have become a bigger factor for me. I find if it's too big and heavy, I'll leave gear at home and that just a waste on soo many levels. I also find people are more relaxed around smaller gear. So I've been scaling down my lens.

    Thanks for the test revealing that chromatic aberration on many of the compact Sony lenses. Chris Niccols complained about chromatic aberration and showed it clearly in his video review (one of the last at DPReview) of the Sony 24 2.8, 40 2.5, 50 2.5 G series. I didn't know it affected the whole lineup so badly. I really don't know which lenses to buy for Sony for video now. For best stabilisation and video autofocus, should be a Sony lens. Chromatic aberration is terrible though on almost all of them.
    Happily my Sony 35mm f2.8 ZA is not too bad. The ZA 55mm 1.8 also seems not too bad in comparison. I'll miss the great physical controls on the lens though.

    Had both these lenses I kept the Sony. I may have had a bad copy of the sigma but in my case the Sony absolutely crushed the sigma for edge sharpness I had to stop the sigma down to 2.8 to even match the Sony wide open. I dont see the CA on mine even close to the level that you are getting on your Sony. I do agree on the bokeh the sigma is much better. Although on mine the bokeh was much more circular than the sigma from what I seen in your examples the size and weight of the Sony for what I would be using it for made the decision to go Sony a no brainer for me. Both are great lenses. If I was only using them for portraits I would choose the sigma but for everything else I would choose the Sony.

  • @sailonstellarwinds
    @sailonstellarwinds 3 года назад +1

    When you're comparing the portraits of your friend in the checkered shirt, I think the Sony image is significantly front-focused. You can tell because everything with green CA is behind the plane of focus, i.e. his whole torso! It's generally bad news when you can use LoCA as focus peaking :D

    There is something about sigma's 35mm lenses. I owned a 35 1.4 on my canon, the first art lens and I miss it every damn day. It just renders the world in such an amazing way, there is nothing that compares, currently mostly shooting a 135mm GM... still miss my damn 35mm. Thanks for the video but I never understand why people will compare two lenses with different apertures and then compare photos from both lenses with both of them wide open. Why wouldn't you match the aperture to do a comparison? Your depth of field changes with different apertures so if you shoot one photo wider, then you're going to have blurriness in parts through no fault of the lens. Am I wrong about this?

    • @MarcTaraz
      @MarcTaraz  4 года назад +1

      While you're not wrong about this, no one is buying an f1.4 to never shoot at 1.4. As someone who would be considering the pros and cons, that's a real world advantage of a 1.4 lens.

    • @SDSuko
      @SDSuko 4 года назад

      @@MarcTaraz I literally didn't say that at all. You'd shoot at f1.4 when you want to shallow your depth of field or just need more light. I'm aware that people who buy lenses are guaranteed to use them wide open. My commentary was about your video comparing photos from different lenses without matching your fstop.

    • @michaeljimenez9345
      @michaeljimenez9345 4 года назад +1

      Stopping the 1.4 down to 1.8 is also an unfair comparison. Stopping down increases sharpness and would give advantage to the sigma. Shooting them both wide open is more fair I would say. To get more in depth review I would even say to test them also both stopped down at say 2.8 5.6 8 but either way to stop one lens down to 1.8 and leave the other wide open isnt really an apples to apples comparison.

    You people are crazy , one mentor says that sigma 35 mm 1.4 is great and another person says that sony 1.8 is good, is it easy to change lense after buying it, just coz you compare lense, some people wanted to satisfy the lens dealers, just for their individual benifits , I don't believe , it depends on the camera man how he is handling. Sorry this is my individual opinion, not to hurt anybody, coz I bought Sigma 1.4, I feel it is doing good job to me.

      Oof that tough one. They are both so good. I think if you're just doing photo and not video, I'd go with the Sigma 1.4. You'll look more professional to your wedding and portrait clients, and that shallower depth of field is just so creamy. It really comes down to what you value. If you value that small size and weight and amazing video AF, the Sony 1.8 is the way to go. If you don't mind the weight and love that 1.4, the Sigma is the way to go.

      @@MarcTaraz Hey Marc , I don't really feel much about the size and the weight . I actually prefer the Sigma over the Sony in build as it's more sturdy I think . But what if I have to shoot a few videos .. will the Sigma at least be reliable on a few occasions . I'm asking you this because you have used this lens for the testing and I would like to know if it will perform at least 50% of the video performance of the Sony ?

    I HATE WEIGHT. I HATE SIZE. With a mirrorless camera, the size and weight does matter a lot. I would thus never buy the key zooms for such a small mirrorless camera.
    My 55 mm is used most; so is the 28 2.8 Sony lens and the 18 mm 2.8 Samyang lens. However the 85 mm 1.4 usually stays home in 95% of all cases. I love the monster for its great quality, but I hate the volume and weight. I typically choose one lens, I mount it and shoot most of the day with that lens. Seldom I switch. I adapt to the lens, not the opposite. With my A7RIV I then have a pocket camera look, when travelling and visiting.
    62 M pixel allows for cropping; prime lenses too. 2.8 is OK because of IBIS.
    Of course this is valid for my private way of life, travelling with a family where all members are impatient. The 85 mm is reserved exclusively for portrait shots in my studio. But I regret this investment. I just keep it, because I have it.

    The Sigma has great optical quality as shown in the video (just not so much for video recording). BUT it's just too heavy for street photography and you draw too much attention. The Sony 35 is just disappointing in terms of optical performance given the chromatic aberration

Just like the old 35mm film days, there's quite a bit of vignetting (doesn't bother me, corners should be darker, most of the time, attention should be on inner two-thirds of the frame anyway.@@Jgheiler

    It's so hard to find a great 35mm lens for sony full-frame. I feel all of them other than the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM have their disavantages. I would love a smooth bookeh and very fast AF, but without spending a premium GM price on the lens... seems like that doesn't exist jn the 35mm category for sony though...
    For the 50mm-ish lenses I bought the sony zeiss 55mm and to me it feels that is the best deal I could imagine.
    Don't find anything like that in the 35mm category though 🙈

      @@AlecKinnear thanks for the comment. What about the autofocus speed of that lens? Is it decent for videography? And the bokeh? I know it has less because of f2.8 but still for the farer out background...?

    • @AlecKinnear

      I find the bokeh marvellous. The architecture of the lens is Sonnar which is a classic 93 year old lens design for rangefinders (Zeiss Contax, Nikon). The Sonnar design had to be abandoned during the SLR period as it leaves very little distance between the rear element and the (analog) film or (digital) sensor. The lenses can be small and very good. The Sonnar design offers good contrast, low flare and minimal chromatic aberration. Sonnar's "weak point" is less technical accuracy, also known as lens character. I have some very precise modern optics (Nikon Z, Sigma Art) and frankly I prefer the Sonnar look.
      A specific example of the difference between modern clinical glass and traditional designs I could mention is the Sigma Art 135mm f1.8 vs Canon L 135mm f2. The Canon has the Sonnar brightness and character and the Sigma Art looks sterile in comparison. I still shoot a Sigma Art 135mm f1.8 (on Nikon now) for sports, but if I were shooting portraits, I'd far rather have glass like Canon L (no Canon cameras to mount it on for many years now). If money were no object, I'd switch the Sigma Art in f mount for the new Nikon Plena except I wouldn't be able to shoot the Plena on my D5 or D850 (only on the Z9).
      Returning to your question about the 35mm f2.9 ZA, the bokeh is great. When I was without any Sony cameras for seven years, I kept this lens for the day when I might shoot a Sony body again (ZV-E1, which is a pocket version of the A7S III brought me back).@@embodiedauthenticity

      Dang thats a massive price difference over there! In the US the 1.8 is 700 and the 1.4 is 800....
      Anyway. Again I think it comes down em what you want out of a lens. Do want a smaller lighter setup, or do you want a bigger setup with shallower depth of field! Only you can decide that.

    • @MarcTaraz
      @MarcTaraz  4 года назад +1

      Honestly, I'd reccomend the 1.4. Better af than the 1.2, lighter, similar bokeh, half the price, and surprisingly transmits more light onto the sensor, making the 1.2 kind of pointless in my opinion. The 1.2 is also a bit longer than 35mm, about 38mm, and if it's going to be that close to 40mm, I'd get the sigma 40mm 1.4 if you have the money because it performs better than both of them.

      i have the sigma art 35mm 1.2 and the AF is wayyyyyy better then the 1.4 for photo and video. idk why marc would tell you different maybe he got a bad copy? the bokeh is much smoother and the 1.2 is much sharper. only downside like marc mention is that its closer to a 37-38mm lens. You’ll get use to the weight dont stress it. hope that helps!
