Thanks for the review. I'd like to point out an important point: the Samyang certainly IS softer when shooting wide open close to the minimal focus distance (like in your sharpness test with the painting), but it sharpens up nicely once the subject is slightly further away. In real life, I think they are both very sharp.
That seems to be a problem with some Samyang lenses .. :D I had their 50 1.4 II and even though it is definitely a nice lens, close-up IQ is very soft wide open. If you like to do close-ups here and there, Samyang is not your brand. Tamron's 35 2.8 is a million miles better at shooting close-ups wide open: you get very close and it is super sharp, even a lot better than the Sony.
Sony 35mm f1.8 can focus closer. This is important for product photography. In video the focus transition is more smooth and it doesn't show focus breathing. So if these things aren't important for you samyang is marginally better in sharpness and contrast also in bokeh smoothness. And it's much cheaper.
in Julia Trotti's review of Samyang 35 1.8. she said that the AF speed of the lens depends on the camera body. if its A7c with real time tracking, then it works very fast but on the a7iii, it was slightly slower.
Great little review thanks. I went with the Samyang. Not a particularly inspiring lens but I wanted a really small and light lens. Fits in the lineup of primes just fine.
Just got the Samyang on sale for $300. Other reviewers actually found it to be sharper than the Sony. I'm not too worried either way but I hope the video focus is fast enough for me. Thanks for the comparison.
Thank you! Based on your reviews and Julia Trotti's it seem I'll buy the Samyang 35mm f1.8 or the 45mm. The focal lenght difference is minimal so I'm going to buy the sharper. Unfortunately these 2 lenses haven't been compared. What do think which one is sharper? Thanks.
Tried 3 copies of the Samyang and all 3 had decentering issues so have now ordered the Sony. Shame as I prefer Samyang’s rendering and always been happy with other Samyangs I’ve had.
Firstly thanks for the review. Santana is a weather sealed lens. And the you are first RUclipsr mentioned Sony lens sharpness better than Samyang at 1.8. I watch lot of videos and all they said Samyang is sharper than Sony. But Sony has better autofocus and focus breathing.
Did i just find my go to camera guy here in dubai?…nice…been struggling with choosing between these 2 lenses for quite some time now…finally answered..thanks
Hi Oma, today I compared side by side Samyang 35mm f/1.8 to Samyang 35mm f/1.4 and noticed the same thing with bokeh as you noticed in your other video comparing Samyang 35mm f/1.4 to Sony f/1.8 The new f/1.8 version was like f/2.5 on the old one. I hoped to replace the bigger 1.4 version with the new one but after seeing that the new lens is not truly f1.8 I'm not going to. It seems that both Sony and Samyang by going small, compromised the optical parameters. The new Samyang lens not only has less blur that the old one, it is also about half a stop darker
I was really unhappy the sigma 35 1.2 had such purple fringing, was coming through on eye highlights so I now mostly interested in 35 lens aberrations just FYI
As I still using the sony 35mm lens, I can tell the autofocus in low light is great same as the day light. Can't speak of the samyang as I did not keep it for a long time after the review.
Thumbs up. Great video. If the retail price in Hong Kong. Samyang 35f1.8 = $2800 Sony 35 f1.8= $3800 Sigma 35 f2= $4800 Which one is more recommendable?
I have a Viltrox 23 1.4 on a6300 and I am wondering how much more bokeh would I have using Samyang 35 1.8 on a full frame. I know, it's effectively 2.1 and 1.8 due to the crop factor, but is there any difference in real life?
In general I believe there is no much bokeh difference between f1.8 and f2 Even though you used samyang 35 1.8 on crop sensor you will get visual bokeh similar to f2.7 So use full frame lenses on full frame and crop lenses on crop cameras.
I have used the Samyang for almost 2years now and recently tried the sony and the AF was better on the Samyang. In fact I can confidently say photo and video AF on the samyang rivals my 50f1.2 GM.
in here, the retail price of the sony 35fe is just 500 (reduced) while Samyang 35 is 450-ish (increased). Maybe I will buy the Sony 35FE but just +50 for the Samyang 1.4 lens. Maybe not now. Just play around with GoPro Hero 9 Black first. Just bought it. I don't really like it as there is no DoF (bokeh). Just for fun.
Actually I got my 35 sony last year on sale for $500 I don’t recommend the f1.4 samyang, it is heavier and The focus motor are noisy and some copies are bad the autofocus stop working after a while (I know 3 people in person had the same problem) my brother sent his lens to Korea for repair.
Samyang - loud clicking motor and quite slow in the video. Is it worth saving $300 over this? I had Samyang 45mm, 35mm, 24mm. All of them failed within a month or two and had horrible motor noise. Tired of returning them all the time and went and got Sony 35mm 1.8.
Hi oma, I contact you on insta whether to keep 45mm 1.8 of samyang or exchange with 35mm 1.8. You suggested 35mm. It's wonderful lens for the price. One more information compare to 45mm 1.8 it's surely a better build quality. AF is almost match with sony. From F2 onwards it's matched sony sharpness. In india I bought it 60% of the sony price. Good value for money lens, samyang start thier good quality lens from 35mm 1.8 and 75mm 1.8
The samyang 45 1.8 is probably its first native fe lens. hence its not built that well. but newer lenses are great, focus faster and have better IQ too like this and 85 1.4. the 35 1.4 too doesnt focus that well and is bulky, and long.
Unfortunately, there is a significant quality discrepancy in samyang. I checked 3 pieces and each had an optical defect (sharpness in the corners and aberration - it was not even in all corners) and in the center of the frame it was less sharp as a Sony). I knew that SONY has a lower vignette, it is better made from a shorter distance and the sharpness of both is basically comparable according to tests. Unfortunately, it turned out that SONY is optically better, which surprised me, because in many tests the samyang is sharper in the frame center. That's why I chose SONY 35mm f/1.8 despite the higher price - the first lens was sharp in the frame center and had good quality in the corners. Sony is a bit brighter and I have the impression that it is narrower (viewing angles). Otherwise, I would have chosen the Samyang. So they have to improve the repeatability of their products. Very good video with examples - thumbs up.
This was helpful, thanks Omar. I wanted to avoid the focus breathing for video, but honestly, for my setup, I wouldn't be drastically changing focus distance, just a few inches at 10 ft away, so I doubt that it would be perceivable.

Oh bull crap. The 1.2 sigma is the best 35mm Lens on any camera. 🤣 it literally doesn’t get any better. Only downfall is the size of the lens.
Wich lens is sharpest between samyang 35mm 1.4 AF vs samyang 35mm f 1.8?
I dont own the 35mm f1.4 now
I have a video here on the channel for samyang f1.4 vs sony f1.8
Sony is remarkably sharper then samyang f1.4 wide open
Wich do you prefer. The samyang 45 1.8 or the samyang 35 1.8?
Consider the 45mm as 50mm
They produce different image perspective
However, because the 45mm is tighter you get more shallow depth of field
