Hey brother... I am trying to get my video podcast up and running. I have 3 mics, 3 cams and a Pyle BT Audio Mixer. Is there a setting that you recommend on the mixer? I think I may have had the gain levels up too high and it was chopping up between mics. I am not sure.
I was about to get the Samyang, but found that a used Sony can be had for down to 500.00, and I like that it's got a shorter minimum focus distance. Also even if you're not bobbing and weaving, better autofocus is better. The breathing was distracting on the Samyang too.
I could tell which one was Sony after the first switch. When you first switched to the Samyang it did look like a different focal length and distorted your face slightly. I was surprised at the color shift though. The Samyang is definitely warmer... I guess due to coatings? Seeing such a color shift from a lense was probably the most fascinating part of this test. Great test format though! Also a great “RUclips” format as you keep people watching to find out which is which. Definitely going to try and incorporate that tactic more in my own videos. Great video Brian! Thanks
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the Samyang is warmer. But shooting in S-Log 3 pretty much negates that. Or even just custom white balance. Obviously I left the white balance settings alone so we could do a proper comparison.
2 obvious differences gave it away for me from the first switch: - lack of any focus breathing on the Sony. - brighter image on the Sony. When I had the Tamron 35-150, I noticed at f2 in comparison to the Sony at f2, the Sony let in about half a stop more light than the Tamron, so maybe this is the case against other lenses too.
100% in agreement with you about vignetting, focus breathing and slight crop. I love the very refreshing no -nonsense approach to straight-forward comparisons. Bad news, money-wise, for sure, but delivered with a smile. And well worth a sub! Thanks for your time and effort.
I've never heard of you until I was comparing Sony 35's. I'm not a video guy, and so your content isn't as relevant to my shooting. Regardless, this is a great format. It makes it super clear and doesn't give subjective opinion until we've already made ours. That's the way it should be and you should make more comparisons like this. Thanks.
The faster auto focus on the Sony was apparent. It wouldn't matter too much for video, but for photography that can be the difference between an award winning shot or another one for the delete bin.
For me...even though I often manual focus, depending on the video, the autofocus speed and precision is so important. True, that talking head videos don't have people darting on/off screen...but they do have highly animated people and product demos, and a precise autofocus is your best friend in those scenarios...so frustrating waiting for the video to focus in when someone is pointing something out. All that aside, I am a Samyang fan and have several lenses...but that Sony focus performance was awesome.
And that's why I left Panasonic! I tried the S5 before moving to Sony and even though it was better than previous Panasonic autofocus systems, it wasn't even close to good enough for the price in 2022.
I also love my samyang for photo content, it got more "character" than sony lens, auto focus mostly fast and accurate. But when comes into video auto focus, i would say sony still my first choice, it's more confidence and fast. When comes into video AF, Samyang lens is slower and not as confidence as Sony lens.
the sony really looked more “clinical”, and while I thought I’d like the “vibe” of the samyang, I hated it here lol. could immediately tell sfter the first switch. thank for this test, I lovr blind tests!
Thank you for pointing out the silly autofocus test lol. I always think, no one does that so what’s the purpose 😂 awesome stuff mate. More videos like this please
That was an interesting and practical test. Samyang made your face marginally wider and warmer but the auto focus test was the real deal breaker. I must confess I am one of those Sony 35 f1,8 owners and it may just be my new favourite everyday prime lens - it is just so versatile and my, oh my, it is sharp!
I've been watching a lot of videos on these two lenses, and yours was the best. Helped me make my decision. I was SO hoping it was the cheaper lens, but looks like Sony wins this one! Thanks again!
I noticed the slower autofocus, the focus breathing, and the closer crop in the Samyang. I didn't notice the vignetting until you mentioned it. I thought the colors were a bit nicer on the Samyang until you graded the Sony. Honestly though, for an average viewer watching videos for the information or personality of the vlogger, it doesn't really make a difference. For example, when I'm learning how to fix something, or listening to opinions on the crypto market, I don't care what the video looks like.
I know mine will be the minor opinion, but having had both, I find the Samyang sharper, even in the corners. Plus, better contrast. The coma is better on the Samyang too. So I kept the Samyang, returned The Sony and was able to put the extra savings toward another lens. No harm, no foul. I think The Sony is a bit overpriced for what it is. I even enjoyed the old Sony 35mm f2.8 Zeiss more than The Sony 35mm 1.8, even though it's a slower lens.
Thanks, but from most of the reviews I have seen, it actually shows the Sony's, in general, have worse focus breathing. But I did notice it in your comparison.
i was thinking of purchasing the samyang only because it is a lot cheaper. i immediately knew the lens 1 was the sony. the quality is way better. now i'm not sure if i will still get the samyang, but sony is really pricey here in ph
3:21 sec into the video I'd like to say lens 1 is Samyang cause skin tone and gray shirt seem more washed out and a weird tint. lens 2 has a deeper richer color, so. Guess that's Sony.
Oh, that is interesting, although no real surprise eh? My dealings with Samyang are underwhelming thus far. Sure if you need a lens on a pinch of the budget hoping to upgrade to lenses in the future then Samyangs are the entry kit. My only real observation (other than the focus hunting) was that the Samyang was redder than Sony. And congratulations for joining us at Sony world! I moved from Panasonic and Canon 2017 and the Sony world genuinely keeps getting better, although my pockets aren't getting deeper.
Having had both, I prefer the Samyang. The Sony is way over priced for what it is. Plus, I find that the Samyang seems to have better resolution and sharpness on my 42 mp camera. I mean if Sony were 50-100 dollars more, I might go that direction, but even then just not sure.
The test you mentioned is to show the lens recover from an infinity focus to a close focus, some lenses get lost (Canon) and won't refocus on the close subject.
You DO need autofocus that can keep up with a subject moving like that! Imagine shooting a music video where the performers dance and you want camera movement as well. Or shooting a skateboarding video. Or the wedding party introductions where the best man and maid of honor come into the room with a stupid choreographed dance or act. Maybe a student film where the camera follows the actors down a sidewalk and one falls to the ground. Not every video shooter does nothing but film their own talking head shots.
Focus Breathing is very noticeable when moving in and out of frame on the Samyang......But then again like you said who really does that. lol!!... for talking heads go with the samyang if you limited in funds....
We're saying the picture quality straight out of camera looked really good. It wasn't till he did some color grading that the Sony outperformed. I'd say the Samyang has a more cinematic look straight out of camera though.
The moment you started to move forward and backward I immediately noticed second lens is samyang, so slow autofocus. Completely unacceptable . You Buy lens only once! it's not a pizza! Go and buy proper lens ONCE!
A resolution chart would show a difference in resolution, a talking head bouncing back and forth is not a good test. Stick to audio, lens testing in not your thing.

For any reason when I didn't know which one was the Samyang. I did like more the color is lens 2 which was Samyang.

all good my friend but,
why upload at 1080 for video like this??

Samyang and sigma lenses are usually warmer than the Sony counterparts

I’m curious, did you update to the latest firmware with the SamYang?

I don't know if people will use it for that purpose but Sony 35mm f1.8 is also amazing for fast action because of that insane autofocus.
And who uses 35 for fast action
@@adamjey3235mm would be fine for shooting something like dancing which I would consider fast action.
I love your videos bruv. Keep it up. Love all the audio tips
It's a test in HD? Nice thought, but this has to be 4K!

Thanks. I watched a million comparisons, this made the decision for me.

Does A7IV's breathing compensation work on these third-party lenses?
Not at the moment, far as I can tell.
I've been watching a lot of videos on these two lenses, and yours was the best. Helped me make my decision. I was SO hoping it was the cheaper lens, but looks like Sony wins this one! Thanks again!

But you care a lot about the audio, hence the main purpose of this channel! Thanks for watching, Robert!
I know mine will be the minor opinion, but having had both, I find the Samyang sharper, even in the corners. Plus, better contrast. The coma is better on the Samyang too. The Samyang looks sharper than the Sony...That makes it the better lens in my book.

FAAAK, I was wrong. Lol.
I picked it. The Sam Yang was ok. It actually was softer than Sony. Sony for the win
Really helpful. (Missing my Panasonic)

Man, there were so many videos raving about Samyang and I just felt so underwhelmed, like you said. Sony is winning me over for sure!

Lens 1 is brighter unless the lighting slightly changed.

Absolutely.
Thumbnail animation gave the answer before watching the video.
Wow, bummer!
I did prefer the color of the Samyang till you color graded the Sony
Yep, agreed!
can you explain? I'm on the fence. Any help would be appreicated.
We're saying the picture quality straight out of camera looked really good. It wasn't till he did some color grading that the Sony outperformed. I'd say the Samyang has a more cinematic look straight out of camera though.
Personally, I'm probably going Samyang/Rokinon for their cinematic qualities.
@@bonafidesimmons6237 I don't understand how a lens would make any difference once an image already being recorded by a camera sensor
Lens one looks a little better to me,
I put that up before I saw your answer.
tehe samyang is sharper, I have a 4k screen 42 inch.
The moment you started to move forward and backward I immediately noticed second lens is samyang, so slow autofocus. Completely unacceptable . You Buy lens only once! it's not a pizza! Go and buy proper lens ONCE!
Yup, Sony lens crushed it. I like Samyang prices 😉
Ha, no doubt!
A resolution chart would show a difference in resolution, a talking head bouncing back and forth is not a good test. Stick to audio, lens testing in not your thing.
