I got the Sony 35mm f1.8 last year. It didn't wow me, but that was mostly because of my evolving favorite focal lengths pulling in wider and longer lengths. The Samyang offers good value and if weight is a consideration for like a travel kit, it looks like a good option.
Pretty soon the Samyang Red Ring will be a sign of top-notch-quality. I really love what they are doing - much like Sigma. Can't wait to see what they can do with the RF mount! :)
Christopher Frost Photography I just got the Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art lens. It pretty good if you don’t mind HEAVY vignetting (or fixing heavy vignetting at least). I got a cheap used copy, so I love it! :) Did you review that lens? I can’t remember.
Your reviews are the best Christopher. Your channel is the encyclopaedia of camera lenses. I noticed you never did the Zeiss 35mm 2.8. was interested in this lens.
Hi chris, love your videos. I just wanted to say that for the AF test you should consider using a 3rd generation sony camera. I had the a6000 and a7 and upgraded to a6400 and a7III and trust me, the difference is huge. Even the sony 50mm 1.8 works great. Thanks! greetings
I have to agree, especially on the 50mm f1.8 - it gets a lot of bad press but on my a7iii it’s an absolute little gem on a lens! Superb sharpness, a bit of CA (easily corrected manually in lightroom) and not the fastest autofocus (but not too bad and it’s at least accurate) - overall i love it!
dragonfist25 agree on clients (and arguably photographers too if given them side by side) wouldn’t be able to spot which was which. Both great lenses - funnily enough I was filming a wedding today and for the speeches I was tempted to use the 50mm as it was a very tight room and poorly lit, so was initially between the tamron and the 50. We ended up changing the speech arrangement which meant I could film from outside the room so ended up going with the 85. Was tempted by the 50 though!

I’d like to see you make more of these direct comparison videos as I find myself flipping back and forth between your different reviews to make my own, far less educated conclusion. I’d also like to see you review the Sony 20mm F1.8 G. Keep them coming!
I've owned the Samyang 24 F2.8 and 35 F2.8 before. Great small little lenses in terms of sharpness, just as the review states. Great value in a small package. Only thing that bugged me with the Samyang lenses (and pretty much any other 3rd party) is the AF noise. Since I mainly shoot video, the little AF clicking noises drive me crazy on 3rd party lenses. You are paying more for the Sony but the AF is always fast, silent and smooth. Great to have options and different budgets as long as the AF noise is not an issue for you.
@@frankfeng2701 I agree. It's a bit odd. I guess Zeiss signed a contract saying that they wouldn't produce a competitor, but it's weird that they didn't make a 35/1.8 years ago. And Tamron is 12% owned by Sony, so that might account for them. Sigma would be smart to produce something that sits between the Sony and the Samyang - a bit heavier, slightly more solid build, full weather sealing, and without the Sony's slightly excessive pricetag.
Andy Day Sigma just recently seems to understand that there is a demand for small and lightweight lenses hence last 85 which is just so lovely! On the other hand it looks like Samyang is the only who really cares to make decent, light, compact yet still affordable lenses 🥴
This is so nice. I wish you'd focused in on the color fringing in both images to show how much more there was on the Samyang vs Sony. It didn't look like much more, but of course if you'd zoomed into the appropriate areas of the photos as I've seen you do before it would have been easier to compare. Thanks a million.
Hi Chris, as always enjoy your videos. How about a 3-way comparison of the Samyang 35mm's. The 2.8, 1.8 and 1.4. Would be an interesting watch if you have the time. Thanks and Best Wishes.
Your autofocus test at 1:49 is flawed. Samyang is on AFC while the Sony is on AFS if you bottom left on the focus indicator. Under af-c, the Sony will be even better due to the efficiency of linear motor working primarily on PDAF. Even on a7rii, there’s a noticeable difference. On afs, it’s based on CDAF. It makes a difference for spontaneous capture.
I have Samyaing 35 f/2.8 and Sony 35 f/1.8 on A7RIV. While being pretty good in the center (maybe just a bit worse than Sony), Samyang is clearly way weaker in the corners. The corners and edges beyond APS-C area are weaker even with Sony wide open and it is a disaster compared to it stopped to f/2.8. Samyang 35 f/2.8 corner perfromance improves to levels barely acceptable on A7RIV around f/6.3 but even stopped to f/8-f/11 it is still nowhere close to Sony (and, evidently, the new Samyang).
@@Cfyzium I'm unsurprised at that, also makes sense considering compromises made to hit the lower price and compact dimensions. I've got the 24mm/2.8 and the vignetting never really goes away. Not really complaining since I use it as a cheap and compact convenience lens.
The Sony was £450 last Monday at (21/9/20) the UK Photography Show. The button is useful if you have it on all your AF lenses, say 24mm GM and 85/1.8. You can then free up a button on the body, say for eye AF. If you have a lens without the button, say 55/1.8, you still need to duplicate the eye AF button on the body. Looks like the newer lenses are getting the button though. Could be useful on an A7C where you have less custom buttons. Close focusing, you might want to add a 58mm achromat for the Samyang, a decent one is around £65.
I chose the 35mm Sony because of mixed reports on the Samyang focus and colour accuracy - and I'm glad I did because at f1.8 my pictures are tack sharp, and eyelashes are clearly defined when I zoom in.
Thank you for the review! The only thing is missing for me in the review is the comparison of AF in video. Usually the problem with Samyang is that in video the autofocus transitions is not so smooth as with native lenses. It's like small steps while focusing. Anyway, this is a good review! Thank you
Even I observed that in Samyang's AF 85 f/1.4 USM(Ultra Sonic Motor) vs Sony's 85 f/1.8 LEM(Linear Electromagnetic Motor). But i think this little 35 uses stepper motor? Wish they adapt to LEMs
Honestly I’m not so surprised with results and this little SY will find way to my camera bag as soon as it will be available. I was always bit jealous about Canon, they always managed to have a small, reasonably bright 35 in their system and last 35 for R is just so lovable lens! Jealous! Now I have Sony 28/2 which on a paper looks like my best everyday lens ... But is not, it’s ... boring. My Samyang 45 is quick, sharp, accurate, blurrs background nicely, is small and compact but it’s still to 50mm-ish. Many times I was thinking “if You could only by 35 instead 45...” I really think this will be important lens for many Sony users. If only Sigma will not repeat it’s move they made with 85 Art 😀 with... I don’t know... 35? 24? 😇😋 but if they would it definitely wouldn’t carry a sub500 price tag 🏷
Tan Zheng Heng ummm... with weight and size stretched down? That would make sens because 850gr for a standard lens? On the other hand it has very few competitors on a market and not everyone has to put weight and compactness as a priority 😃
All the samyang lenses I've tried have always been a little hit or miss in focus accuracy but the sony is very good at accurate fast focusing, still another great option for sony.
Another great video, Christopher. Thank you. If you think it's worthwhile, you could perhaps offer a comparison between the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 and its f/1.4 sibling. I'd be keen to see how they compare, especially in terms of autofocus.
Replaced Samyang 35 f/2.8 with f/1.8 version, really like it and I would say the size difference is negligible. The lens is super sharp and very nice to use on a7r3. The only thing I don't like about it is something you can see on the photos here, it has quite obvious green-ish tint that has to be calibrated in Lightroom manually, at least right now. Coating seems to be the only thing Samyang didn't learn how to do properly yet. Hoping to record a video comparison of two lenses before selling the 2.8 version.
I've seen that a lot online, even with Sony lenses. Have you compared or owned a Sony lens? Watch from 3.28 (Kit lens on A7C) - ruclips.net/video/zZRNw2ptUjQ/видео.html
@@Mickparrysstepdad yeah I have 85 1.8, and two more Sony lenses and one from Sigma. 85 is known for some coloration, but it is shifting towards more natural colors for the skin if you look on a color wheel.

Samyang's 85mm f/1.4 adds a yellow tint to photographs, which can be reduced in post but still .... In this comparison of 35mm lenses, I do detect that the Sony's whites look like a more true white than the Samyang's. Does it look that way to you?
The Sony has 2 main advantages: 1) No dock needed for firmware updates 2) Closer minimum focus distance (22 vs 29) which makes it more versatile. Samyang has to improve drastically on their close up IQ. Much like this 35/1.8, I had the 50/1.4 II and its performance at close distances was just awful. Personally, I prefer Tamron's 35/2.8 to both of these.
Hey Christopher, I really enjoy your videos! Have you thought about a video in which you compare lenses with different levels of sharpness, aberrations and flaring on a 42mp and then a 24mp camera? Many people will probably buy a full frame camera with 24mp and ask themselves if many things like purple fringing and corner sharpness are still a problem on a lower resolution sensor.. Atleast thats what came to my mind when looking at the Samyang 35 1.8 and its slight purple fringing. Could help alot of people putting things in context.
Sorry, I dont see the mentioned color fringing of the samyang in the middle.... never saw clearer lines... impressive! I hope the lenses will be available in Z-mount...
If you want more details than this overview video, take a look at the full review. Links in the description. I do mention several times in the video, and it's listed at the end, that the Sony lens handles colour fringing better, which is what LoCA is
@@christopherfrost Yeah I've seen the great full review. Was just disappointed that this major issue with longitudinal CAs (which is far more critical than the fringing you mentioned in this video on the charts) was not explicitly mentioned. It is basically the main point why I wouldn't buy the Samyang.
@@magicalsnek The reason I didn't include it here is that I think I forgot to get LoCA results when I was testing the Sony lens a few months ago, and so I don't have a test image to directly compare it to
Hi Chris, Do you think the samyang 35mm 1.8 is worth the upgrade if you own the samyang 35mm 2.8? In terms of sharpness mainly. I kinda like the idea of weather sealing and having 1.3 stops more light but love the size of the 2.8 on the Sony A7r body for a nostalgic film sized camera set up.
Thank you for the review! 1/. Which of the reviewed lenses got more "creamy" bokeh in your opinion? 2/. Did you ever tested small Samyang 35mm f2,8? I have one and find it dull and not really contrasty. I would like to know if new 35mm f1,8 is any better in this respect?
Glad you enjoyed the video! I talk about the bokeh differences in this video, but feel free to watch the full reviews if that's helpful. Also, I've already tested the 35mm f/2.8 - check out the review on my channel.
@@christopherfrost Thank you for answering. Sure I heard comment "they are nearly indentical" but it left some field for uncertanity :) Nearly identical means not the same as identical :) I am searching for as smooth, not nervous, not bubble bokeh as possible. Taken from this criteria I would like to know which fit best this description: Samyang or Sony? Regarding Samyang 35mm f2,8 - I know you have tested but this test doesnt give me answer how S. 35mm f1,8 compares to S.35mm f2,8 in respect of contrast and bokeh.
@@wodzimierzwohn114 Honestly, with the bokeh, it's too close to call, they look great. Image quality test results for the 35mm f/2.8 are in that review :-)
Samyang are killing it with these small FE primes lately. The 18, this one, the 45, the 75 - all are absolute bargain. I recently bought a full frame Sony. My plan is to collect a set of these primes only. Finally, a FF system that is SMALL. Weeee :)
100%. This Samyang 35mm is only 90g heavier than the tiny Olympus 17mm f/1.8 prime I use on my M43 cameras, and that is the smallest/lightest 17mm AF prime available on a mount system whose major advantage is being compact and light!
@@dominic-ryan My 2 previous cameras were Olympus. Some time back, I sold my Nikon full frame and went MFT mainly because of the difference in size and price. But in the last 2 years, Samyang with these primes and Tamron with their f/2.8 zooms, turned the table completely. I mean, the Tamron 70-180/2.8 is virtually the same size and price as my Oly 40-150 Pro was. And the Tamron 17-28/2.8 is actually smaller and A LOT cheaper than Oly 7-14 Pro. Crazy! I was reasoning with myself for sometimes. "But 180 is not the 300 equivalent, but this, but that..." And don't get me wrong, I loved my M1II and M10II ! And I still love the tiny 45/1.8 for example :) But the reality is, the main advantages of the smaller sensor system are simply not there anymore. I believe this is why Oly is in trouble and Panasonic are trying to make the turn.
@@momchilyordanov8190 from a size standpoint I certainly think you are right, however for run and gun video centric requirements I still think M43 has some distinct advantages. It was the Dual I.S, 10-bit 4:2:2, and uncropped 4K60P with near non existent rolling shutter options of the GH5 that hooked me on M43 to begin with. High end video specs at an affordable price is something the GH line has been crunching for a few years that we are only really just starting to see now with full frame with the S1H, a7S iii, R5 and even the S5. Regardless though I do think M43 may have hit it's ceiling here. High end 6k video specs might be achievable, but where too from there? The rumoured 41MP sensor (imx492 I think) for the GH6 would result in seriously intense M43 lens resolution requirements to make use of. As it stands the 20MP GH5 has greater pixel density than the 61MP A7R IV. Then there is low light performance (which is what interests me) which has not historically been great aside from the GH5s. I think some of the newer mega dense Sony sensors have the ability for adjacent pixels to work together somehow for light collection, no idea how effective this is in practice though or if it will translate to the sensor to be used in the GH6. Either way, I have begun selling off my least used M43 lenses as I prepare to migrate to the A7S III for the low light and auto focus. If the GH6 is announced formally before the end of the year with truly spectacular video capabilities, then I'll likely stay M43. Otherwise I hope to be fully E-Mount by early next year.
Hello Christopher, have you by any chance noticed that this lens is darker than the Sony equivalent one? I made a direct comparison between the two lenses (and also with the Sony ZA 35mm 2.8) and the result was that with the same settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO), the samyang was always underexposed by at least -0.3 stops compared to Sony lenses. I have read other people who also pointed this out, did you noticed it? Did you have the opportunity to make a simultaneous comparison of the two lenses? Thanks.
The light transmission of as lens (it's T-Stop) is not the same as it's f-Stop...It's often the case that two comparable lenses have slightly different T-Stops at the same f-stop, and therefore one will pass slightly more light than the other.
Wasn't very impressed about the Samyang, in its review (probably I didn't see the sharpness well because of the purple fringing), but now it seems quite good, compared to the Sony 1.8, which is a staple 35mm lens, highly popular.
My impression is that the bokeh of the Samyang is a bit smoother and less distracting. Can you confirm this? Too bad there's no comparison image with both lenses and the same subject.

Can you make samyang 35mm f1.8 vs Viltrox 35mm f1.8 please?
I bought and am happy with the Sony 35mm f1.8. I also have the Tamron 45mm f1.8 which is also great
Nice review as always mate. Need to test this one as well soon.
What is your favorite 35mm for Sony?
Maybe this one TBH
@@christopherfrost oh wow that's awesome
Samyang's 85mm f/1.4 adds a yellow tint to photographs, which can be reduced in post but still .... In this comparison of 35mm lenses, I do detect that the Sony's whites look like a more true white than the Samyang's. Does it look that way to you?
Yes, even I observed that. The whitebalance was off in those chart. Seems your comment explains it very well
The Sony has 2 main advantages:
1) No dock needed for firmware updates
2) Closer minimum focus distance (22 vs 29) which makes it more versatile.
Samyang has to improve drastically on their close up IQ. Much like this 35/1.8, I had the 50/1.4 II and its performance at close distances was just awful.
Personally, I prefer Tamron's 35/2.8 to both of these.
I already own Sony 35 1.8 and 55 1.8, to late samyang. I’m not switching, but.... will do for sigma 35 and 50 1.4 if they are size wise as the new 85
Hi Christopher! I'm about to embark on the R5 road. Would you consider doing a RF vs EF 85mm 1.2 comparison? Not really sure about updating.
Well, maybe one day, but...I'd have to actually buy a 24mp camera to do that so it would be expensive
The AF point for the Samyang isn't in the very center of the frame like the Sony. It is shifted up a bit.
Sorry, I dont see the mentioned color fringing of the samyang in the middle.... never saw clearer lines... impressive! I hope the lenses will be available in Z-mount...
Omg can’t wait for this! Will replace my 2.8 za finally for this
Thanks, Im after these lens and sharpness is key to deciding
Samyang 35mm having auto focus issue, have to buy additional lens station.....
for firmware upgrade?
A comparison with samyang 35mm f1.4 would be very interesting! Please! 😉
Hey Christopher, thank you for this very nice comparison! It was very helpfull for my decrision making.
All the best
Enrico (from Germany)
Both pretty fine, as close up performance is very important on such lenses, Sony is better optimized there.
indeed, but is it worth additional ~200$ for ~5cm difference in close ups i dont know about it
That had an extraordinary amount of adverts in it.
How does it perform in video? Specifically the AF.
That's what i want to know too
I want to know too. I had the 18mm and it was terrible in video, hunting all the time.
What about the Longitudinal CAs though? No word about the worst part for me about the Samyang, it looked awful.
@@magicalsnek The reason I didn't include it here is that I think I forgot to get LoCA results when I was testing the Sony lens a few months ago, and so I don't have a test image to directly compare it to
Thank you for a great review, as always!
Hi Chris,
Do you think the samyang 35mm 1.8 is worth the upgrade if you own the samyang 35mm 2.8? In terms of sharpness mainly. I kinda like the idea of weather sealing and having 1.3 stops more light but love the size of the 2.8 on the Sony A7r body for a nostalgic film sized camera set up.
few years too late but what did you go with eventually?
Stay away from the samyang 24mm f2.8 it's not good
Hello Christopher,
have you by any chance noticed that this lens is darker than the Sony equivalent one?
I found them at the same price!
Which one should I choose for video? I’d like to film myself in a studio environment taking to the camera
Did you got the sony?
How does the new compact Samyang 35mm compare to the old pancake 35 and 35 1.4?
Thank you very much for this informative video!
for 35mm lenses ‘sigma f2,yongnuo f2 and sony f1.8 ,samyang f1.8’ please make comparison of them
Hey Chris, can you do a review of tamron 28-200 FE? That lens is a hot topic among amateurs.
I will get round to testing Tamron lenses again soon :-)
@@christopherfrost Thanks a lot man! Looking forward to it
yesss, thanks for this!!
I would still go for the sony because of better video AF
i’m not sure about samyang because of corner flaring. i don’t know why this happens but sometimes it would be disappointing.
can you compare both samyang 35mm 1.4 and the new 1.8?
Wasn't very impressed about the Samyang, in its review (probably I didn't see the sharpness well because of the purple fringing), but now it seems quite good, compared to the Sony 1.8, which is a staple 35mm lens, highly popular.
0:00 Unpacking time of the Samyang almost 6 seconds faster than the Sony.. definitely buying the Samyang!
My impression is that the bokeh of the Samyang is a bit smoother and less distracting. Can you confirm this? Too bad there's no comparison image with both lenses and the same subject.
It's subjective, really
Samyang AF 35mm, f2.8 is the actual winner here ;-)
This is exactly what i want to know! Thank you!
As always, thanks for your work.
Hey christopher will you review the new rf 100-500 lens since you got yourself an r5.
I will get the r5 and i don't know what to get the rf 70 200 or the 100 500
And what about field of view? I noticed that the sony 1.8 got less FOW than the zeiss 1.4
You mean its wider than 35 mm?
Thank you Christopher! This answers my question ;)
In your opinion, which is the best AF 35mm lens for video using a Sony full frame camera?
Thanks you, Chris!! You rock!❤️
Najbolji 👌 pozdrav iz Zenice. Bosna i Hercegovina
i’m on the fence about these and the sigma 35mm F2 🤔
Does the samyang have a manual focus, too?
for cinematic shoot which one is best samyang 35mm.1.8 or Sony35mm 1.8 ? pls suggest me ?
HELP! I'm buying Sony A7 III. Should I go with the kit lens or buy the Samyang 35mm f1.8?
FE 35 f/1.8 should still be great at F4 or beyond
How is the AF in video? Comparison
I wish you did some focusing tests when doing reviews.....alot of people buy samyang for sharpness but the autofocus is shit
Hi,
So can you use jpg in-camera correction for de Samyang for Chromatic aberration etc?
Dear Christopher and everyone familiar with the Samyang lens: is vignetting and CA sufficiently corrected in-camera for JPEGs? Thanks!
Yes, it should be
For video using the Sony A7Siii, what is the best 35mm or 40mm lens with excellent autofocus out there?
Sony's new 35 f/1.8
Hello! Is this good for sony a7 video?
Sony 35mm f/1.8 FE have weather sealing???
Question: Does the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 lens require the Samyang dock for firmware update?
Yes, all samyang/rokinon lens require the dock.
Thank you very much :) The Samyang looks like a very good buy. The are so many lenses for the Sony system now, but I miss compact 300, 400 and 500mm prime lenses !
i dont know what both have some weather sealing means. do they both have a seal on the back or not. if not then why not just say so im confused.
