    Great video. I picked up the OneLut for my iPhone 15 Pro while watching this. Of course, I already purchased it before your discount code popped up. LOL. No biggie. I'm looking forward to shooting and applying the OneLut to see what it looks like.

    The best demonstration of apple log. It’s sick how some of the footages are close to a professional camera, worth to mention the bokeh. I am easily switching to iphone 16 pro Max when it releases this September.

    I wonder how many film makers actually know how to use Davinci Resolve because most of the things complained about can be fixed in post. Power windows, masking, and curves go a long way.. This footage isn’t useful! Umm.. yes it is..

      I’ve been using the depth mapper to spoof depth of field. It’s quite powerful but it’s taking a bit of work to master. Worth the effort given the quality of everything else coming out of the iPhone.

      Do you have any tricks in post for dealing with the green orbs lens flares? For me this is by the far the biggest drawback of shooting video on an iPhone.

    • @ATLJB86
      @ATLJB86 9 месяцев назад

      @@joshnlevinson Yes. Stop using the default app and use the Blackmagic app to record. Manually set the settings for shutter speed, ISO, WB, etc. film in apple log 4k and use 422. Then you shouldn’t even have that problem. ND filter could definitely help. Far as post work.. Simple color grading. Bring in a CST and change the gamma input to apple log and now you already have a good base to start. Point I’m making is know your tools and how to use them. Then you will avoid a lot of problems. You might need to learn how to color grade in Davinci then you can easily deal with any color issues.

    • @joshnlevinson
      @joshnlevinson 9 месяцев назад

      I do all that and know how to colour grade (and do so all the time). Using the Blackmagic app does nothing to resolve the green orb issue, nor does colour grading.

    • @ATLJB86
      @ATLJB86 9 месяцев назад

      @@joshnlevinson Then you don’t know how to color grade because you can adjust any color’s hue or tone.. Easily remove with a power window. I suggest you deal with the issue that is causing it.. The sun.. Clearly you are not shooting in golden hour.. You want to shoot before the sun rises and after it has fallen.. You don’t want the sun over you. Generally around 6am and 6pm. The app can definitely help you because you can manually control the iso and shutter speed, which would eliminate the problem.. never had it one time so clearly you need to make changes…

    For my run and gun social stuff I’ll use log in Blackmagic with The One LUT burned in with one of the lighter Codecs. The dephoneification of Apple log footage is too much of a joy 😂

    • @ForestCinema
      @ForestCinema 9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah same here. I built a 2383 LUT with Cullen Kelly’s free PFE, and I just burn it into h.265. The real benefit of Apple LOG is all the processing it bypasses in this case, not necessarily the LOG itself.

    • @ThomasBrunkard
      @ThomasBrunkard 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@ForestCinema exactly that. Losing the horrid sharpening alone is worth the ticket price for me.

    Thank you for this video, very useful. Depth of field concern about Medium shot is not really a problem for me, I don't necessarily need shallow depth of field for medium shots. But for close -ups I do agree with you. I am planning to shoot a short fiction film on iPhone 15proMax, the whole short film on iPhone15 ProMax But not the close-ups of the actors. I will shoot the close-ups on a DSLR Camera. I am planning to take on your iPhone filmmaking Guide course and I wanted to know if you think CINEMATIC mode footage can be used together with Apple Log footage in a single video without the viewer noticing any difference between the two? like in the context of a short drama film.

    Since the vast majority of my stuff is taking head, in front of a green screen, I don't see the need for ProRes. I don't use luts. I do some simple color correction just because, but the colors straight out of the camera are pretty good anyway. I adjust for exposure mostly. Once I go into the field for interviews, it may matter, but I only have the one iPhone 15 Pro Max. I also have an 11 Pro and X which will be my B & C cameras. I got the 15 Pro Max more for the significant camera upgrades over the 11 Pro than for just ProRes. It's significantly higher quality. Sharpness is especially noticeable to me.

    I love the ARRI look and OneLut is way cool! What I would love to see if a matching Luts for S-Log3, and DJI Pocket 3 / DJI Mini 4 Pro Drone..

    so you don't use DaVinci Resolve CSTs?

      I used to do a simple ACES transform from Apple LOG to Rec709. It looks better than Apple’s LUTs but I still prefer the ARRI style look of the OneLut so that’s been my go to when filming mobile or on my 6K Pro.

    Is the h265 codec 10bit 422?

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  9 месяцев назад +3

      It’s 10bit but 422 is a part of ProRes codec not h.265.

      @@Reuel_Media It's actually not. I've ran many tests on this over the last few years. 422 always grades better than 420 everytime. The subsampling always affects how clear the color read out is. If you're happy with 420, then so be it.

    To me the benefit is the over sharpening. BUT i dont use iphone at all. Sony xperia 1 IV, and no prores. In RAW haha. Really not but its nice to think i got RAW video on a phone!!!
