Hi, Finally a real minimalist solution. One question - in which part of the video can I see the setup appears on the thumbnail of this video - the mic plugged in but without the cage?
If I were you Michael, I’d ask who makes the drive? Is it proprietary ? Or is it mass market? The reality is that’s footage and it’s precious. You don’t entrust all your work to untrusted, untested, unknown drive resource simply because you like the form factor. That form factor has me thinking it’s the Western Digital SN770M NVMe drive. It’s small enough to be that. And if it’s that drive … it’s got a 90% fail rating on Amazon. I’ve had a few of those small form factor 1 tb drives and I’ve never had one that actually worked. Except for the Samsung packaged drives.

Michael,, I cannot see any indication in this vidéo, as to how the Lexar hub or ssd is attached to the back of your phone, can you please give an indication thanks,, I does not appear to be attached using magsafe.
So I bought the lexar and hub and just wondering why I'm getting the flashing exclamation mark on the record button in the app? Tried this Lexar SSD and hub and also a T5 Samsung SSD.
What record settings do you have? That exclamation means you’re dropping frames. Usually means the codec/frame rate you’re trying requires more data speed than the card allows. For example if you’re trying ProRes HQ on higher frame rates you’ll run into issues most likely. I shoot on ProRes LT and I find both those SSDs work fine.
I see now these are the same as the SAMSUNG T7 Shields I use. From their FAQs. "What are the read and write speeds? What type of cable connectivity does it use? Lexar Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub features read speeds up to 1050 MB/s and write speeds up to 1000 MB/s. It uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 high-speed interface for connectivity."
Thanks for this, that’s amazing. Which audio wireless mic setup do you prefer for run/gun setups? I bought the first rode go and sent it back as it kept dropping connection, but I imagine it’s improved by now and I’ve heard the DJI ones have issues also? This SSD looks great and the early bird discount is tempting. I get that Lexar is sponsor of the video but any additional information on this thing? Does this overheat like crazy? Is the speed good enough and on par with larger form factor ssd? Is this a valid solution to use on a computer (it can be very useful to use on a laptop without cables dangling)
Hasn’t overheated on me and I just got back from a couple day trip where I filmed A TON with it. SSD seems on par for speeds with all over fast drives now days. I loved using it directly from the phone to my iPad to my Mac. Seamless small and quick. Sponsor or not if there were any major red flags I would mention it in the video. The only caution I will throw out is I’ve only had it for about a month so all I can honestly say is so far it’s my favorite iPhone SSD setup so far.
Does it support AV output in case I want to connect my iphone to an external monitor? I know of another solution/enclosure that provides two extra usb 3.2 ports and for a cheaper price. Not sure if it's ok to mention the name or not.
Michael, brilliant video, I’m looking for a solution just like that for the new Insta360 flow pro. I want to use their additional accessory that’s the heart shaped magnet to connect the phone with ND filters and the only solution I’ve got at the moment is to put a DJI receiver on the other end to balance it even though the Mic 2, works really well with Bluetooth.
Does it work to connect to the camera / any camera such as the dji camera for the video to go automatically inside the SSD. And is it compatible with apple log? Thanks!
Does this work with shooting non ProRes footage or only ProRes footage? Like will I be shoot & save directly to the SSD or can I only save directly to SSD when shooting in ProRes? Thanks in advance!
@@initialfocus Ah, gotcha, thanks a lot for such a quick response! Also wanted to ask since you're the expert, is there a reason why these SSDs from Lexar are SGD $500+? Like is there a reason why they're so expensive compared to competitors with 2 TB of space as well and only costing SGD $100? 😅
This has been the exact reason why I have not used an external hard drive because I always record with my iPhone but I also have a microphone plugged into it and would regular heart drives you cannot use the microphone
Great product 👍🏻. btw, how’s the heat problem going with this? (most of the M.2 with case ssd for iphone out in the market have heat problem during recording, as i know)
I'm using a M.2 2230 1TB NVME in 2230 M.2 enclosure on an iPhone 15 Pro. Connected using a 180 degree usb-c adapter. Why is a company like Lexar using a kickstarter campaign for this?
Lexar Professional Go Portable SSD supports phone cases with a thickness up to 1.6 millimeters using the provided silicone case. Without the silicone case, the phone case thickness can be up to 2.6 millimeters. If the thickness exceeds 2.6 mm, they recommend using a USB Type-C cold shoe adapter cable to connect your phone.
The design looks awesome and is something I've been waiting for since the 15 pro came out, but Lexar scares me. I used their cards in the past on my professional cameras and always had corrupt files.
That all looks great, but my major problem, it doesn’t work with a case. Don’t know about you, but I have never let my iPhones go naked! And since my original 3G I have never had one damaged.
Everyone of those who promoting the small ssds for for iphone , always demonstrate only cage set up with , but no one of them hasen't says how to apply it for a mobile gimbal
New to this. What are the chances this fails and we're burned for our pledge? Ready to purchase the 2TB one with the hub. Going to do it. Hope I don't get burned. :)
There is always potential risk with kickstarters but I will say Lexar is a GIANT company. And since I and some other people already have it in hand I can tell you it is a complete product 👍🏼
@@initialfocus I must admit I'm not that clued into the Apple ecosystem and had to read up on ProRes codec a bit -- seems they went for speed and quality over file size. Though I keep seeing that 1 min of ProRes footage is around 5.5Gb? That would make it about 90MB/s, which in theory should be handled by a fast microSD card. Cameras like DJI Pocket 3 can record 4K60 until the card fills up, although it's HEVC

@@initialfocus Thx for the feedback!
Thanks!
Hello! Can you recommend something cheaper (ssd enclosure)? Lexar’s too expensive..
I saw a product that was a phone case that had a built in micro sd slot for an expansion
What was the reason you went with the BeastCage over the BeastGrip Pro?
quick question: how does it fit if you have a case of the phone. I have the Litechaser 15 and would really rather it not interfere lol
Does this work with shooting non ProRes footage or only ProRes footage? Like will I be shoot & save directly to the SSD or can I only save directly to SSD when shooting in ProRes? Thanks in advance!
In the native iOS camera app only ProRes can go to an external SSD. In the BM camera app you can save HEVC regular clips to SSDs
Is there a separate link for the adapter that attaches the lexar to the phone?
Did I miss the link for the audio input? You spoke too fast for me to catch what that was
Great product 👍🏻. btw, how’s the heat problem going with this? (most of the M.2 with case ssd for iphone out in the market have heat problem during recording, as i know)
Pretty nice set up i would love to make some videos using iphone 16 when it comes out pretty soon
My question is, can I also use the whole thing with my iPhone 13 Pro Max, or is everything only usable from iPhone 15 upwards?
I'm using a M.2 2230 1TB NVME in 2230 M.2 enclosure on an iPhone 15 Pro. Connected using a 180 degree usb-c adapter. Why is a company like Lexar using a kickstarter campaign for this?
Can’t really use a case though
I’m using a moss case so I don’t think this gonna work
I hope he or they reply to this comment. This is so true. Most people have a case in their phone.
Hi Michael,
For long form recording, what’s been your longest runtime before any overheating
What about adding a battery and still keeping it simple?
The M3 has usb power out. up on the gimbal, the control usb at the light has pd out. Use it all the time.
Thanks for the explanation. Do you know ou if you can you actually plug a magsafe battery while using this ssd ?
The design looks awesome and is something I've been waiting for since the 15 pro came out, but Lexar scares me. I used their cards in the past on my professional cameras and always had corrupt files.
So difficult and expensive for the extra storage. Android I simply insert an SD card in the phone and no external cumbersome extras.
MicroSD cannot handle read/write speeds of ProRes.
You cant purchase this anymore as of 9/24/24????
That all looks great, but my major problem, it doesn’t work with a case. Don’t know about you, but I have never let my iPhones go naked! And since my original 3G I have never had one damaged.
Does that mini male-male adapter work if I have an Otterbox / Lifeproof / Mous case?
What is the microphone being used ?
BTW 16 pro max's video indoor quality is improved compared 13 pro max?
oh my gosh - this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for!
Will this work over phone cases if it’s just the adapter and SSD itself?
what about the solution for wireless mic audio with ssd
Everyone of those who promoting the small ssds for for iphone , always demonstrate only cage set up with , but no one of them hasen't says how to apply it for a mobile gimbal
Just bought the insta 360 flow pro… would this attached the phone be too heavy of a payload?
Is there a connector for lightning so it works on an iPhone 14 Pro Max?
What gimbal are you using ? I can’t see anywhere
If you are already running a wire to your bag for the battery, you can put your storage in the bag, too.
I am cancelling my pledge
New to this. What are the chances this fails and we're burned for our pledge? Ready to purchase the 2TB one with the hub. Going to do it. Hope I don't get burned. :)
There is always potential risk with kickstarters but I will say Lexar is a GIANT company. And since I and some other people already have it in hand I can tell you it is a complete product 👍🏼
@@initialfocus Thanks. I was thinking that too. I see now Jon Rettinger and some other people are covering this too. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Would this work with the SmallRig/Brandon Li setup?
iCloud optimization? Do you have a video on that??
Great video, what gimbal is that?
do you know if this set up works with the DJI osmo Mobile 6 gimbal?
I saw that paramotor in that quick B-Roll shot 👀
What’s the best build for iPhone 14 Plus camera?
Has anyone received theirs? On the website it just says pre order but I don’t see any delivery dates so curious how kickstarter works.
Michael great video! Asked on another one - what’s a minimalist ND filter suggested ?
Why not just use an OTG microSD card reader? I've got a usb-c reader that's half an inch long
MicroSD maxes out at like 300MB/s. Not optimal for long recording sessions in ProRes.
@@initialfocus lmao ruclips.net/video/zSqgzddHooM/видео.html
Would it work with a phone grip, like the Shiftcam pro grip?
This is perfect! Only thing it needs is a magsafe battery bank!
Is the 15 pro enough or do I want the 16 pro 😮,it’s my birthday this week and there’s a lot of sale for the 15 pro with my carrier Roger’s 😅what is enough for you ❤
You should get the iPhone 38 pro xl ultra. /s
The 16 hasn't been announced yet lil bro.
@@skeletr you really right thank you so much
@@LouisLuzuka The 15 line will probably stay discounted when 16 line comes out in a month.
@@professionaI_yapper so I wait for the discount or just get it now
Can you buy that male to female adapter from lexar?
Hope they can develop phone case with built in ssd and power bank with different power ports.
Thanks! I love this setup and will order it. 🙂
Hey Michael, I want to say that this is actually a product I love and would love to own but unfortunately I haven’t had the best luck with Lexar. I’ve shot weddings for close to seven years now and over the course of seven years I’ve had freshly new. Lexar cards fail on me one of which have been at a wedding. I have also had fellow videographers and photographers. Tell me how they have had Lexar cards fail on them.
So as much as I would love this product, I’m just a bit put off by Lexar.
Great video however
What make is the microphone shown in the thumbnail?
Rode wireless pro (the receiver)
This setup can work with the smallrig cage for iphone 15 pro max?
