Glad to hear it 🙏 ever since the “update” they didn’t get a dime out of me again, and it wasn’t long before I stopped using the legacy app altogether. RIP to the legend that Filmic Pro once was, it’s a shame it had to go down like this.
Few observations, 1) Prores 4444 is not true 4444 but just the container, the file within bit depth is still 422, because the tech specs of the iPhone show it can only shoot 10 bit and not 12 bit ( 4444). 2) I think that BM app does add some of it's own color science to the clips while recording ( which is a good thing). Delete Filmic pro and their crappy Subscription, there is a new king in town and its freeeee.

(I'm talking quality/bitrate options, disabling digital sharpening/noise reduction, locking shutter speed while keeping ISO on auto for vlogging/varying lighting, remote control with another phone, setting presets...) That would be awesome, thank you !
For me the one thing that you didn’t mention was that the App also automatically generates a proxy file also and writes that at the same time to the SSD. Also this App also runs on the iPad too. This App is a game changer and is only going to get better 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

What effect does the SSD have on the power life of the iPhone? If you are doing a full test it would be good to know how long the phone runs with and without the SSD when filoming in ProRes. Also can you split the USB cable and supply power to charge at the same time as using the SSD do you think?
I haven't owned an iPhone yet. I think this the time I will go for it, just been waiting to see these kinds of videos to answer some of my questions. Thanks for a good video (much better than your number of subscribers give credit for!), you have earned yourself a new subscriber.
Finally, someone did a great video on what actually makes this phone useful. Would love to see you showcase the rest of the workflow in Resolve. Also, Apple said they were going to provide a LUT for ProRes, I wouldn't use the LUT in the actual grading, because the color management already supports Apple Log, but does it work as a preview LUT in the BlackMagic Camera app? Do they bake in the LUT to the footage? Also, would be really cool to show off the Cloud Workflow, it's pretty insane.
@@Grimreaperrx I found apple's official LUT and tried it in BlackMagic Camera, it's a preview/display LUT doesn't bake it into the footage. It's on their developer site, under More Downloads. They also released the white paper explaining it.
Just finished shooting a wedding ceremony. I wasn't asked to do so, but when I showed up at the ceremony, I saw that there was no videographer. So, I shot the 30 minute ceremony with the Blackmagic camera app on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. After about 20 minutes, the footage started to jitter. The the image got all funky with occasional changes in color (no I didn't move to a different setting with a different lighting temp). The iPhone got very hot to the touch. Then, after the ceremony, when I tried to shoot some of the dances, when I hit the record button, the image froze. I wonder whether either the iPhone or the Blackmagic app is not able to shoot long clips. Anyone else have this problem?
Due to all this sick mind reprogramming and manipulation on the West, I'm a bit not ok with the name of the app. However, you did a good job presenting its functionalities, I just wanted to share something off topic.
I am using 15 pro max + this app, when I am shooting Apple Log (all tested) in 4k 60fps, I always get the frame drop alert (all Apple Log Codec alert the frame drop, but H.264/265 won't), and it will stop recording after a minute or longer, and I found out the when shooting with 120mm, it will alert from the very beginning but the main 24mm lens won't(sometimes). Is something happening the same with your iPhone 15 Pro? I have tested the record to an external hard drive ( Samsung T7 2TB), and shooting with a 120mm lens is still showing the alert, is it only my iPhone? I am not sure if it's a hardware(120 mm lens) issue? or a software issue?
At last i can get rrid of the Filmic pro and there expensive subscription no more. i am a davinci resolve pro editor so how i missed this i dont know. Great video and now your top subscriber
Any news if there will be a remote app for that? Would love to monitor and remote control it using another apple device. That feature is available on Filmic Pro.
I think Blackmagic just owned the entire camera app market with this move. They gave us the custom control Apple refuses and it's free which kills all of those paid apps. Now once they integrate Apple's Cinematic mode that all third party developers have access to, I'll probalby never use Apple's stock camera app for video ever again. If only Apple had allowed those "7" lenses to be used for video, I would be in heaven.
when i shoot video at 24 fps shutter speed 1/50 or 1/60 on this app, if i do a tripod pan (up to down, or right to left) it looks really jittery like a bad shutter speed. any advice? its happening on the native iphone 15 pro camera app too
This is the problem with 24 fps. It looks juddery when the camera moves or objects move in the scene. If the lighting ratios are right, you can try setting the shutter at 25. That can help smooth it out.

It's so silly but I would genuinely love if the native camera app had the landscape-in-portrait mode. Sometimes it's just way more comfortable not to rotate the phone
I’m hoping there will be a grip to 15 pro, that attaches securely to the usb c, includes adapters for audio and a built in power bank (MagSafe!?), but also contains a dock for say Samsungs t5/t7 hard drives, alternatively/also sd card reader. That would be gold!
The main disadvantage of the app is: changing lenses! The transition between them is not as smooth like the native Apple Foto App. Honestly, there is NO transition. So i will not filming with this app.
Love the blackmagic camera app! Can you check if your 15pro can use the hdmi clean feed in the blackmagic camera app? I can only get it push out audio. It's just a black screen. Wondering if it's a blackmagic glitch cause Filmic Pro hdmi clean feed works perfect.

This app is an absolute beast! But there is one big problem for me, it is not compatible with my Zhiyun Smooth-5 gimbal and believe me, I don't know which other application to use. Because this is the only application that allows you to shoot 4k 60FPS HEVC LOG, at least that I know of... I am open to application suggestions that will support my gimbal and meet the criteria I mentioned above.
Do you know if it's possible to use the Blackmagic Camera App connected to a Mac for the purpose of a monitor? I'm having trouble with using the settings of the native app while in continuity mode. Hope this makes sense haha
Im trying to figure out why videos are not playing on my PC when i import them from the Blackmagic app on my iphone 15. Videos play when I import from the original iphone camera app but not blackmagic.

Would like to see a comparison of iphone 15 pro prores log and something like pixel 7 pro or s23 ultra with motioncam.. just simples 4k 30.. different scenarios.. low light, and so on :) Still think Motioncam is much better in terms of quality. The app is so much better than it was when you tested.. specially if you use the paid version with beta.

I have a question that I haven’t been able to find an answer for online. I’ve been testing out the ProRes Log. When I go to do my normal color workflow with a CST node in Resolve I’m able to select Apple Log in the input Gamma but it’s not clear what the input color space is. If anyone knows I’d love to know!

I think apple may have had an article where they discussed it, I don't remember where I heard it was Rec2020. Technically, I think that you can do it via ACES or Davinci as well, but really awesome that we get the log gamma AND. a nice big color space for the footage
Cool review thanks! I like BM products which I know from my VFX supervision. Was disappointed in the default 15 pro app switching between lenses. This BM app is exactly what I was after, for video at least. Now would love to find equivalent for still photography. I used Pureshot for years, big fan, but apparently it’s been discontinued on the iPhone 15 pro 😢
Thanks. I was shocked when I opened the BM Camera App for the first time - I wondered, am I dreaming, because I wasn't lost, scared, or confused. Looking forward to trying H.265 and Apple LOG for 95% of the quality of ProRes and 5% of the space. Does that sound reasonable? Wish Apple would allow it in the standard app.
i just tried the Save to Files) Feture in the app and it Recorded onto my USB Stick from an iPhone14proMax my usb tho did fill up fast with 32gb but using standard 1080p 60fps was working smoothly with a USB2 speed lightning connector hahahah. really good app tbh i dont mind using a large USB that has to be powered or maybe there are Lightning low power usb2 1tb sticks that this app could use. intresting app all the same it reminds me of the PocketHD recording style but better.

Very good review! I really like using this app - especially the BM Cloud feature. One little note however: focus peaking does not remain on screen when you're actually recording! I hope they fix this soon since it makes the feature useless. Also, would it be possible to write the video files to an external SSD in any other codec than ProRes Log? It would be great to be able to get video files strainght into SSD rather than having to do it later...
hey can you do a comparison between codecs, like (H2655 vs pro res), to see if there is a real difference in quality or prores just take lot more storage for nothing
Will be possible to change the diaphragm/aperture? i get the camera app as soon i get the iphone 15 pro, and i´m stuck with the aperture instead of modify the shutter speed... :S
i've tried it. its continously creat proxies under his directory and anyhow you can only store clips both under app dir and photos at the same time.if you do not , you can only store the clips in app directory. it's hard to move outside the dir. you can not stop this proxy clips created,you can not only store on photos. it's really a bad app

can't give you a definitive answer but i'm sure you can record any framerate to the external drive. You can only record ProRes 4K 60 externally which is why they write that in particular but that doesn't (shouldn't) exclude all the other framerates

Question about record time: I have my Media/footage selected to save ONLY in Files on my iPhone. However, the storage indicator shows my storage space is low. I can’t seem to turn off proxies which record in-app. Any solutions?

I just tested it and I can shoot 4K 60fps Log internally to the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this app. Dope.

Love how you can force landscape while holding portrait orientation. No idea why Apple hasn't implemented that feature still.
Another talking head says it is reduced quality.
Seems like the default orientation of lenses would be landscape. Portrait requires digital rotation/cropping. @@nicmart

When you shoot wide screen in vertical mode, not only does it shoot with a crop, but it pushes you down to 2k… 😢

What do you do to get around not having control of the iris or f-stop with this app?

I have a question that I haven’t been able to find an answer for online. I’ve been testing out the ProRes Log. When I go to do my normal color workflow with a CST node in Resolve I’m able to select Apple Log in the input Gamma but it’s not clear what the input color space is. If anyone knows I’d love to know!
Input colorspace is Rec.2020
@@EvanSchneider Thanks 🙏 I’m curious how you found this out, or is this common knowledge. I did some trial and error and found that ACES ap1 and Rec2020 seem the most accurate but I’d love to understand why
I think apple may have had an article where they discussed it, I don't remember where I heard it was Rec2020. Technically, I think that you can do it via ACES or Davinci as well, but really awesome that we get the log gamma AND. a nice big color space for the footage

Cool review thanks! I like BM products which I know from my VFX supervision. Was disappointed in the default 15 pro app switching between lenses. This BM app is exactly what I was after, for video at least.
Now would love to find equivalent for still photography. I used Pureshot for years, big fan, but apparently it’s been discontinued on the iPhone 15 pro 😢
Thanks. I was shocked when I opened the BM Camera App for the first time - I wondered, am I dreaming, because I wasn't lost, scared, or confused. Looking forward to trying H.265 and Apple LOG for 95% of the quality of ProRes and 5% of the space. Does that sound reasonable? Wish Apple would allow it in the standard app.
i just tried the Save to Files) Feture in the app and it Recorded onto my USB Stick from an iPhone14proMax
my usb tho did fill up fast with 32gb but using standard 1080p 60fps was working smoothly with a USB2 speed lightning connector hahahah.
really good app tbh i dont mind using a large USB that has to be powered or maybe there are Lightning low power usb2 1tb sticks that this app could use.
intresting app all the same it reminds me of the PocketHD recording style but better.

Just started using this app and I really like it, but one thing I'm missing (or I just can't find), is audio input controls, like a limiter or gain control. Do those tools exist in this app? BTW, great job on the vid!
Any tips for shooting log via black magic in high light snowy mountains ? I did just get the polarpro nd case/filter for the 15 pro. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I’m very new to shooting in log
U know you can just turn off the feature where the native app automatically switches to another lens right? I personally like the pro movie app more because the blackmagic app doesn’t let you film in 240pfs..

Very good review! I really like using this app - especially the BM Cloud feature.
One little note however: focus peaking does not remain on screen when you're actually recording! I hope they fix this soon since it makes the feature useless.
Also, would it be possible to write the video files to an external SSD in any other codec than ProRes Log? It would be great to be able to get video files strainght into SSD rather than having to do it later...
hey can you do a comparison between codecs, like (H2655 vs pro res), to see if there is a real difference in quality or prores just take lot more storage for nothing
Will be possible to change the diaphragm/aperture? i get the camera app as soon i get the iphone 15 pro, and i´m stuck with the aperture instead of modify the shutter speed... :S
i've tried it. its continously creat proxies under his directory and anyhow you can only store clips both under app dir and photos at the same time.if you do not , you can only store the clips in app directory. it's hard to move outside the dir. you can not stop this proxy clips created,you can not only store on photos. it's really a bad app

Hi Michael! Thanks for review! Could we record another fps (eg 24, 25, 30) on the external drive via Black Magic App? Im a little bit confused with Apple manuals and marketing which suggests that on the external drives we can record only ProRes 4k 60 fps. Please let me know. Thanks! :)

can't give you a definitive answer but i'm sure you can record any framerate to the external drive. You can only record ProRes 4K 60 externally which is why they write that in particular but that doesn't (shouldn't) exclude all the other framerates

Under color space his shows Apple Log but on mine the only option on the bottom says Apple Log HDR. Was this an update or am I missing something?
Do you have an iPhone 15 Pro? Only that model has Apple LOG. iPhone 14 Pro and before can shoot Apple Dolby HDR

Question about record time: I have my Media/footage selected to save ONLY in Files on my iPhone. However, the storage indicator shows my storage space is low. I can’t seem to turn off proxies which record in-app. Any solutions?

Most my videos are DCI 4K so 4096 x 2160. I like a wider look than UHD but if I got too wide RUclips doesn’t give me all the upload features lol

Shoot landscape with phone in landscape otherwise the 4K video is less resolution when shooting landscape with the phone in upright position !
