This was one of the best videos I have seen on the topic! Such a great video. I love that you showed the technical stuff, and didn't try to sell a LUT to convert from Log...for film makers, this may be a valuable tool, but for everyday people who may have never seen or heard of Log before, this may be their first taste!
There is just so much misinformation or misunderstood takes on Log on youtube that it is just a breath of fresh air to hear someone knowledgeable talk about it. Also loved that you showed the whitepaper. Its just a pet peeve when people say "Log is gray and washed out", because its not, of course. This feature is the one reason I really want to get the 15 Pro Max.
It's also great for matching up different cameras in post. :)

    • @somewhatboxes
      @somewhatboxes Год назад

totally. i was relatively ambivalent about the news of apple log, which is saying something because i actually own a blackmagic pocket cinema camera. in theory i would be the kind of person who would be really interested in this.
i think my main fear was that even if i enable log mode, i'll be fighting automatic white balance and focus. ZY totally answered that concern - it'll be totally possible to get matching shots with consistent white balance, focus, etc... in apple log. maybe you'll have to use the blackmagic camera app, but that isn't really a problem - blackmagic has demonstrated competence and earnest effort in UI & design, so i don't feel like i'm in shaky hands with them.

Log is certainly a great advancement here, but unfortunately if anyone is trying to achieve a perfect/controlled/intentional shot, the motion profile still seems to be getting in the way. Interested to see if using an ND filter & shooting at the correct shutter speed changes this. Currently everything that's in motion in this footage is too sharp in a clearly processed way with the possible exception of the low-light test footage. I'd be interested in seeing daylight footage with an ND filter & controlled/locked shutter speed at 1/2x the frame rate to get as close to 180 global shutter as possible.

I know a professional videographer that uses $10-25K equipment for video shoots but has done some recent work where he needed to do two pickup shots after everything was packed and in a desperation did so using his iPhone 14 Pro Max and, after post production, nobody who’s seen his digital film knew the wiser. If he didn’t point it out, and I’ve art directed video shoots for 25 years, I wouldn’t have entirely knew which were the inserts. Just bananas how good phone cameras have gotten.

based on your comment, it seems that you don't know what LOG is for. what he shown in that timestamp is just the original LOG footage which is typically looks washed out as it saves details using an algorithmn, you are supposed to "color grade" it in post to bring back or recover these details which brings up the color. This is also where LUTs come in. You may have noticed that in the video he started talking about LUTs, they are are basically like filters in your favorite photo editor app to customize the colors and bring a specific look. but there are some LUTs too that only restores back the colors of a video shot in LOG in a particular LOG profile (e.g Apple LOG) and then after applying the base LUT, you can then further more "color grade" it by adjusting some knobs and sliders if you are targeting a specific look.

This is a great technical breakdown of Apple Log, I appreciate talking about dynamic range and sharpening since those two are often the biggest "ahhh you shot this one a phone" tell-tale signs that I see. I hope that in future product releases, they allow for complete control over noise reduction and sharpening. I would also be curious to see apple log compared to what Motion Cam is able to do on something like an S23, since CinemaDNG allows for that complete control over NR/Sharpening and even allows for some (kinda fake but useable) expanded dynamic range using Davinci Resolve's highlight recovery. If Apple continues pushing this pro filmmaking, I really hope the rest of the industry follows and we get some momentum in this space.

One thing I’ve been noticing in both my own footage and footage I see on RUclips from the iPhone 15 Pro / Max is stuttering in the video recordings, especially when there’s camera panning. Is that normal / an inherent characteristic of the iPhone, and is there any way to avoid it? I find that’s the main thing that still prevents the iPhone footage from looking truly excellent.

So from a total amateur perspective, Can I shoot in log mode and easily apply a Lut to it to see the finished product within my phone or does it require editing in a video program after it's all been shot?

Yes it does have phone characteristic, it's still overshaperned, and you can't get DOF cause the sensor is too small......i could tell right away

I’m happy to have it but these color grades you show as examples in the beginning are terrible.

I wish you filmed the whole thing in Apple log and the did a big reveal at the end.

Do you notice more noise using the 0.5 and x5 lenses? The standard 1.8 aperture lens is definitely a cleaner image for me out of the black magic camera app. Anyone else having issues?

    Hello,
    Nice video nice
About uploading monitoring LUTs have you tried, for instance, an Alister Chapman -2 or -3 LUT? What do you think of the idea of doing that?

You mentioned blackmagic camera on this video. Any other apps for photo, video shooting, and editing can you recommend?

Quick question: can you recommend any teleprompters that work for iPhone and mirrorless cameras?

I know you’re asking the poster but I have used a sub-$100 Amazon 1080 14” display connected with a lighting to mini-HDMI cable several times. It is NOT 100% color accurate, BUT, shooting using BlackMagic iPhone app in Log at 60 FPS knowing I’m fixing on post I wasn’t concerned about color, merely framing and elements I could see on a bigger screen. If you’re still interested I could look up and post the inexpensive monitor I use. It isn’t a dedicated video monitor, I bought it to use as a second monitor for my M1 MBP ProMax but it came with a cable for the iPhone so did a “why not?!”
