I used to be a phone hater years ago when it came to "mobile photography" and the like. My opinion changed once I was able to shoot in raw format for photos. I'm sure if I had that iPhone I would feel the same for the video side. Even though my ancient dslr or old mirrorless camera can do "better", it's crazy how far technology has come to allow us to have this kind of quality in our pockets. Incredible tools.
Philip, I cannot express my gratitude enough for kindly sharing your filmmaking experience and observations. Having a "studio in my pocket" like the iPhone has been a delight for the kind of filming I like. Thank you for opening my eyes more fully to what the iPhone can do.
Philip!! Somehow after you taught me videography via your website many years ago, I lost track of you 😢. So happy to see you’re still posting to youtube. Thank you for all you’ve contributed to all of us.
Great shots, and as always, an honest, visually pleasing and in depth review.. thanks.. wishing you and all the Bloom cats a healthy and happy new year!
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about!
Lovely and informative as always! Thank you 😊
Excellent video as always. Thank you for sharing
Fantastic video, as always, filled with useful information and insight. Thank you.
Love this video it was worth the wait as always. Wish you a great year!
Thank you Philip... just exactly what I needed to see and hear!
Amazing results with that phone. Thank you for the wealth of information!
A hugely useful video, beautifully shot and thoughtfully scripted/edited. Amazing to see how far the iPhone has come. Thank you Philip for continuing to make trustworthy and insightful YT videos.
Another great video! Happy new year Philip!
Nice video as always! I loved the bonus video at the end! 🙂
Καλημέρα Archie!! Awesome video thank you.
So glad to have you weigh in on this, Philip. I really respect your opinion.
You, Philip Bloom, are an extraordinary person.
The 15 Pro Max has really astounded me. Its a sound B Cam and that Log with the Blackmagic app grades like a dream! Yes, NDs all the way, but man, this is an excellent deal. Beautiful footage and review as always, Philip!
Thank you as always for your insight with this video, Philip. I hope apple log becomes a new avenue for you to film more videos, without the need to carry around heavy gear.
Thank you. I hope they add the ability to all their models not just the pro. With the 3rd party apps it would be possible to record in it.
Im glad to finally see a comprehensive video on this, including contextual kit. I feel most of the stuff I have seen so far has been too limited or not suitably transparent.
Food for thought. Many thanks. 😎
Excellent video, great looking footage while being extra informative. Also, that’s an awesome outdoor cat garden room you’ve got there!
Great review thanks
Great video, as usual. Even for someone who's not interested in filming on a phone.
Beautiful video amazing 😊I try it for myself
Great stuff, man!
Amazes me how much can be got out of these late model phones in the right hands. Fabulous footage just to sit and watch.
Brilliant, thank you Philip!
Some beautiful footage & we love how you used Bloom Gold to embellish on these wonderful scenes.
Thank you very much!
Thanks Phillip! Great work as always. Looking at your work i see Apple work hard to get rid of the nasty flares comming from the source of light. What’s your thoughts about this?
Thank you. I will use 15 Pro 4K/60 ProRes Log to record kindergarten teacher-student interactions. The test footage has been heart-stopping. I processed in Premiere using the Freelab plugin to convert the test footage to Rec.709, and it looks glorious with minor color correction. No issues exporting a 37.5 GB ProRes file from 4 min of video.
Great video! Do the snap in filters muffle the microphone?
Great review and test footage!I have been shooting using apple log for a while now and just like you I found it to be leaps and bounds better above competition. I completely agree that the 2 times crop mode from the main camera looks best. It gets less of that digital look of the full sensor mode. The 2 times zoom in Blackmagic Camera app looks exactly the same as the 2x mode in main app. It’s just not as convenient to get to. I’m still to try using one of your diffusion filters. I’m pretty sure that this is exactly what I need to take the digital edge of my footage.
I actually think it's the easiest to get into, since you literally only have to zoom in the way you normally would with 2 fingers on the screen, the quality of the 2x "mode" is exactly the same whether "swipe zooming" or clicking on the 2x button. I even tested 3x crop on the main cam and found it's decent enough to warrant using it over the 3x optical camera of the regular Pro version (not Pro Max) in lowlight situations where you want less noise (due to f/1.8 vs f/2.8) and don't mind a little softness, that can be sharpened in post. That kinda made me regret getting the Pro over the Pro Max tbh honest lol. Still, 3x is more useful to me in 90% of situations where I want zoom, only caveat is in very lowlight it's not great. But neither is the 5x, but then at least it makes sense to have the extra zoom if you need it.
A real testament to the fact that gear doesn’t matter I think. Beautiful footage as always.❤
Fantastic video. One correction if I may make so, 7:44 iPhones always switched between cameras while zooming. They only didn’t do it in 4K60. However iPhone 15 can switch between cameras even in 4K60 now.
Thanks sir. What I found with older iPhones was if you were in super wide and zoomed to the 24mm equivalent it was a digital zoom. It only switched to the optical if you stopped recording. Likewise the 24mm to the 3x. I don’t have my iPhone 14 Pro anymore but I was sure it did this. But you know iPhones better than me!
As you said, the key thing is how liberating it is to use such a discreet device to achieve this level of results. Another 5 years and they will sort out the low light pitfalls I'm sure.
Wonderful, professional review! The footage looks beautiful. What made you land on the Prolost LUT? Did you try others? Joel released a Phantom LUT for the iPhone Log, in case you missed it.
Who is Joel? I’ve know Stu maschwitz since the 5d mk II days, his profile was what I shot with for years.
The Prolost log has a number of variations. The one I use is so gorgeous and subtle. I do grade it after but it’s a beautiful base. The Apple one is not nice!

Great stuff Philip - some great guidance here.
My main unhappiness with newer iPhones is how the increasing main sensor size in recent years, coupled with no increase in lens focus extension, has delivered poorer close focus ability (and the default superwide ‘macro’ mode is a horrible kludge). Somewhat undermines what lower depth of field could have been had from a larger sensor by focussing closer.
True…BUT the you have the 2x mode with the 15 pro which looks great in good light!
You make London look beautiful and almost somewhere i might like to live, especially with lovely souls like you around, and that my friend is magic
Thank you. Beautiful as always.
Looks great. I ended up getting a cage with a 67mm thread, so I am just using off the shelf VND's. Two things I have noticed:
1. I like the results of keeping the VND on, and raising the ISO to 1250, I believe in testing people found this gave the best dynamic range (albeit with some more noise, though still useable). You can also potentially denoise in post.
2. While I think the prolost LUT's are better, I don't think any LUT does better than a simple color space transform in Davinci Resolve. It's just shocking and amazing to see what the image is "supposed" to look like, before other choices were made for you. It blew my mind at how opinionated the official Apple LUT was. Not only does it really help in grading to start from this neutral, accurate starting point, I can now dial in looks in Davinci and create custom LUT's for previewing, based on exactly what I plan on doing in post. (Creating your own LUT is as easy as right clicking the clip, and clicking export LUT). I guess if for some reason you can't use Davinci Resolve, then a conversion LUT is the next best thing? The thing is, after finally getting the tone mapping from Apple off the image, why would I throw someone else's tone mapping back on? In my opinion, it kind of defeats the purpose. Color management is just a really easy, really high quality way to get from Apple Log to Rec 709 (or HLG whatever the deliverable is).
Definitely going to look into some bloom or mist filters though, the footage you shot looks great.
Get the Bloom 67mm 1/4. Perfect match!
I am not a colourist and find the Prolost LUT gives me a great starting point.
I agree on the 2x missing from BMCApp, however, did you try using what some have found is the best ISO for dynamic range on the 1x, this being around 1250 ISO? I have also found when I compared this to ISO 55 the highlights and shadows are a lot different and the rolloff is better. Yes you gets slightly more noise, but it's nothing that doesn't clean up. The ISO 55 and other low ISOs seems to be have an artificial noise floor. Though you can also argue in the video shot by Apple, I did see them using ISO 55 a lot.
Great video. One app I love which you featured here is Protake for which I pay a subscription but there is a problem. The external recording option is greyed out for me, I can’t figure out why because the same Samsung T5 works fine in the standard app as well as the free Blackmagic app. I have an iPhone 15 pro max. I love Protake because it allows me to use a second iPhone as a monitor wirelessly. I wish the black magic app had this feature unless I am missing something? Were you able to record to an external drive on the iPhone 15 pro max mr Bloom? Thanks in advance.
Yes I was but I have the same issue with Protake. They said it should work so am waiting on a reply.
Patiently still awaiting on your fuji xh2 and xh2s reviews 😊
Not going to happen.
Great video as always Philip 👍🏻 I still film with my iPhone 14 pro max and it looks awesome too 😅 and mostly with FX6 and ZVE1 😂 best cinematic greetings from a german 🐈 friend 👍🏻😉
Beautiful images Philip, loved the shots in London. I looked for Pan’s snap filters on Amazon and i only found ones for Iphone 13 and Iphone 14. Not for the iphone 15! How did you get yours? Did you use the ones for Iphone 14?
That's so weird; they sent them to me in October. I will ask.
Any thing else on the snap filters?… iPhone 14 only as far as I could see… and *Bravo* on the fab video. Cats are so lovely.
@@Roz-Inspire-Videothey are available for the 15. Also I’ve a dedicated video just about the filters from 2022
@@philipbloom Thank you Philip …I had found them and was trying to answer my own question … so appreciate your follow up! 💕
Any chance that you could release your Bloom Gold Diffusion filter in other form factors? I'd love it for the DJI Pocket 3, maybe the DJI Mini 4.
Please tell us Archie's story...
Check out thebloomcats for more about Archie. Met him in October, he came over end of November.
I don’t think formatt hitech will make filters for products with a short shelf life. Screw on and matte box filters will always be around.
Excellent video, I always look forward to your deep thoughts on stuff like this! Anxiously waiting to see if you do a video like this where you dive into MotionCam and compare it to what AppleLog is able to deliver.
Thank you. What’s MotionCam?
@@philipbloom It's an app that allows you to shoot Cinema DNG on a phone so you completely bypass any processing because the app taps into the raw data stream.
The developers are true video nerds so they're after a very purist approach to image quality, no sharpening or noise reduction.
It's been a ton of fun shooting with it and I've gotten beautiful results, but I've always been curious to see a true professional take a look at it!
@@philipbloom It's an app for android phones that records RAW video. You need phone with fast UFS storage to avoid dropped frames and only few manufacturers don't lock framerates to 30 (e.g. pixel can do 60).
@@romanmihalik3002 why have you repeated the previous comment? It’s been discussed it a different thread in detail. I don’t even shoot raw video on my cinema cameras as it’s over kill data wise. CinemaDNG on a phone is ridiculous.
I stated in this video ProRes HQ is overkill as it is!
Love your content... spot on as usual... I would like better sound on the voice overs...
Voice overs? How many videos are you referring to?
Sorry but bad things are happening right now and I had to do snatches of VO at different times and not ideal places for this one. I am sure you can let this slide considering my VO is normally perfect, no? Or isn’t it? No real need to leave a criticism is there anyway? Isn’t there enough negativity in life?
I thought the vo's were perfect.
Can’t wait for your Burano review 😍😍😍
That’s random! Not going to happen.
Wait really? I thought this would be your dream camera. Regardless, love your videos and your work!
@@blackskycreative I like small cameras and I also like cheap cameras. The Burano isn’t cheap!
I have that Pan’s Snap Filter for my iPhone 14 Pro (based on your recommendation) and was thinking of selling it because swapping fixed ND filters can be a PITA with changing light conditions (thanks Scotland), although the filters are excellent. I didn’t know there was a 58mm adapter for it though, that would let me use a Variable ND.
Great video though! I’m on the fence over upgrading my 14 to a 15 to get Log support
It’s a HUGE upgrade for video!
And don't forget the big advantage of the type C high speed USB port so you can tack on TBs of storage!
Came for the iPhone video, stayed for the cats. ❤
I like your videos and all, and I’ve been a fan, for about 13 years or so. Your love for cats has reserved you a spot in my schedule, good job you )
Would u mind sharing the case with the hand grip u used for your phone?
On blackmagic app you can pinch to zoom in or rotate the phone vertical
Thank you for such professional and informative review. Also thanks for the enjoyable experience
Thank you. What do you mean by cloudiness in parts of the image? There’s some light reflections at times for sure with the filters.
Hi Philip,
From personal experience in photography, I would say that it seems that internal reflections within such a small lens/coatings make photos and video susceptible to various intensities of flare and 'bloom'/bleed from light sources around the image. For example, at 09:28, 12:53 or 13:39 in this video, I seem to see lots of light bleed all over the image, making the colour smear and appear impure as such. There are several more examples when shooting back into the sun like at 11:09 @@philipbloom
Cheers,
Jeremy
@@Bemthewalrus erm…that’s the diffusion filter! It’s literally supposed to do that. Please see the Bloom Gold linked in the description. :)
To me there seemed relatively little lens flare. With my iPhone 12 I found flare / reflections such a problem when adding a filter it wasn't worth it. The further away from the lens the filter was placed, the worse it was, but even with the filter as close as possible and the other lenses covered in black foam to avoid reflections it was still bad. It seems like this has been fixed in the 15 Pro? Or maybe it is down to the filters, I did try a few different ones though.
@@rustyroy5385 if you mean that green thing it’s a less with this phone. Ghosting reflections from filters will be same regardless of model and is down to the distance between lenses and filter mostly.
I could use some help here… I’m trying to decide if the additional exposure controls of third party apps are worth the loss of some features found only in the native app. For example - I could use an ND filter to slow the shutter without precisely setting the shutter angle that results, but I do get access to the 2x lens. Any help you can provide would be great.
BTW - this tutorial is great!
I think it make it very clear that the only way is to use 3rd party apps. You can’t even lock white balance! It’s way more than exposure controls.
The US Amazon link is for the iPhone 14. Also … what’s a good solution for mounting the ssd and battery?
What are your thoughts on the 15 pro max’s base ISO being 1250 per Gerald Undone’s tests?
Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!(Mandy Lee)
Magnifique! ❤
I'm so annoyed that Apple log isn't available on my 14 Pro. I don't like the over processed look at all on the 14 Pro. Is there anyway to fix this? Does ND help with the over sharpening or does it only affect motion? Is a mist filter the answer? Does HLG in the app Cinema P3 do anything or is it only a "fake" profile? So many questions 😀 but I'm really struggling here to be able to replace my Sony ZV-1 with my much hated iPhone. Don't have Nitrate Film Convert. Thanks!
Diffusion helps but you need post software too.
@@philipbloom Right. Thanks for your quick response! It's like putting make up on a pig I guess... 😂
@@MTBsDO NOT put diffusion on the iPhones it will sharpen the diffused image resulting in really ugly noise and blur
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI Do you mean that the image sharpness is decided depending on input to the sensor? I don't think so, at least regular cameras don't work that way and Philip seems to have some success using diffusion filters.
Interesting, I’ve seen other RUclipsrs say high iso is actually the way to go?
Like ISO 1250 some were saying

The older I get the more I appreciate the iPhone. Gone are the Cannon 5D experiences. Gone are the big lenses. I enjoyed them but age intervenes.
Was just wondering about the wide screen shots. Cropped? Or legit anamorphic? Looked nice.

For a phone to be able to capture like this is remarkable
Excellent work. Thank you for the deep dive. Could I ask, what is the song in the piece that starts at 2:43 ? It is gorgeous.
Thank you. It’s a very famous piece of opera called “humming chorus” from Madame Butterfly by Puccini.
@@philipbloom thank you for your quick response! You've always had great taste in music on your pieces.
Beautiful video as always, but I'm a bit confused, I guess is the word: hasn't FiLMiC Pro Legacy already been offering unprocessed, unsharpened video for years already? It definitely has never looked very sharpened when I've used it, but you just said that it was never possible until now, so what the heck?
But then ok, I've rarely watched my footage on anything larger than an ipad

Nope. Filmic pro has offered its own log but no app can remove the over sharpening and noise reduction. Filmic pro with Android DOES let you adjust those parameters.

Hello, thank you for your video. One Question: does the one for the 13 Pro Max works with the 15 Pro Max?
Does the what? Snap filters? It’s a different case. The plate it slightly different too. Same filters.

The case, no. Every generation of iPhone needs a new case. Don’t forget the iPhone 15 has replaced the mute switch with a button as well.
Hello Archie!!
As someone who still wonders about 35mm dof adapters (I love my camcorders i know) They make them for the iphone, they looked good before I wonder how they work now. I thought the dvx200 would be the perfect camera for me, but alas it needed a gh5 or 5s sensor to really be useable. but it was neat getting some dof on a camcorder lol.
Another thought is a seemo and an iphone still seems like a better solution. Especially if theres an update where you can get a better recording via the seemo app on the phone. Honestly i think an ipad mini with that capability would be even better, no annoying calls or texts while your trying to film.
Very confused by the SeeMo part…for what? It turns your phone into a monitor.
If you are genuinely concerned about someone calling your phone, turn on airplane mode! :)
Well I meant if you have a camera with you recording a camera feed through the seemo seems like a better option still if you need decent quality and long lens stuff for quick turnaround. Despite the low bitrate.
I just can’t stand trying to view video on my phone, hurts my eyes so an ipad would be alot easier to use with the bigger screen for me, but doesn’t seem like ipads get many video features.
Thanks for responding mate!
@@chrisw443but these are two very different things. For me it’s about finally having a camera always on me that has a really good image.

Philip, as always very useful, thanks you. Out of interest, given iPhone, iPad's, MacBook Pro's and TV all display HDR and can be used to edit HDR, why is there so few HDR videos, this one for example. You are a creative god, me an armature, so I love to see a video from you on this in the hope you may discover things that surprise you and you would share. I film in HLG, run and gun because I am not practiced and therefore skilled, but I stay in a HDR workflow. I have tried adding a lot to the excellent black magic camera app, but my lack of knowledge means I don't know how to get a HLG, in my case Sony, working in the app. I think there is a massive market of interest around the type of workflow. I've described that your skills are perfectly suited to go through and explain. Just my humble opinion mate and I loved seeing all those places in an around Richmond and I think Kingston that I missed from time to time. With all of the things strap onto your iPhone, wouldn't it be easier to just bring a dedicated camera?
No. In my case hauling around heavy cameras and lenses hurts my back. And you're much more obvious whereas people have gotten used to smart phones. I can take a trip with my camera in my pocket and no one is the wiser. Hell, I can even make phone calls on it!
Yay!
When you’re recording with BM’s app and you switch lenses the audio no longer syncs with the video.
they need to fix that!
Phone cameras are getting better and better. Imagine the iphone 50 promax with a vista vision sensor lol.
Do you know of any 67mm 1-9 stop VND’s that have 1/8 mist diffusion? K&F have one that is 1/4 but I’m just wanting to take the noise and sharp edge off with the 1/8.
I tried stacking and it doesn’t work well with the iPhone and similarly with your step-up ring gave me vignetting.
Also, whenever I change lenses within the BMD app in 60fps there’s a nasty frame that is crazy colors as it adjusts
You can’t have a 1-9 stop VND. 3 or 4 is the very max without big side effects.
I have a whole video on variable NDs from last year.
@@philipbloom Yes, I recall that video! We have the 82mm Freewell K2 system now thanks to it. I can’t use that system or step-up rings though on my iPhone as it causes vignetting and I can see the LiDAR Scanner periodically flashing on the back of the VND in the image.
I’m using the K&F 67mm 1-9 stop VND with 1/4 Mist and it is actually very good as long as I stay within the VND’s marked range. Shooting with an iPhone I’d rather just have one VND than two, and any color shift I feel like I can match in post. Just really seeking out that 1/8 strength instead of the 1/4th.
Isn’t it fascinating that there was all this talk about computational photography and yet the highest image quality from a phone is achieved by turning it all almost off (Apple log)
The great thing with the main lens in Apple Log is that its native ISO is 1250 actually, great for low light, too :)
Is it though? Has that been officially confirmed?
@@philipbloom yes, with IMATEST testing. 1250 is native, 55-1000 lower is overexposed with earlier clipping by one stop.
@@DennisSchmitz yet it’s not the cleanest ISO at all. Native be definition should also be the cleanest.
Only tell for me that this is Iphone footage is the flares, or the optic reflections, especially when "dancing around" due to stabilization when hand held.
For example @11:11 on the brick wall, not worse perhaps than a camera, but a different look, and to me a distinctive "Phone look".
Other than that, impressive !
I've got an old Samsung S10e, which actually have a physical aperture, but I never use it, seems pointless, with only two settings, and rather small difference.
That's probably why It got lost in development.
Whatever phone will allow us to fully turn off noise reduction will be a winner. Then you don't need to add artificial sharpening in camera / post. Gopros already lets us do this and in a controlled test you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a prosumer camera.
GoPro can be good but it’s always wide and all in focus.
@@philipbloom Yeah almost like that's the point of action cameras
@@MarkusFinholt erm, my reply was in reference to you saying GoPro looks like a prosumer camera.
Anyway please show me where the noise reduction setting is in the GoPros. They’ve had sharpness low option but I’ve never seen noise reduction. The DJi Action 4 is the first action camera to have NR and sharpness control.
@@philipbloom Gopro Labs allows you to totally turn off noise reduction, and set the bitrate to whatever you want. Because of the lower NR you need to up the bitrate to compensate. So you can set it to 220mbps in labs, up from 100mbps. It's actually really cool. I'm also 100% sure the DJI settings don't allow for fully turning NR and sharpening off. It's visibly oversharpened and NR-ed even at the lowest settings.
@@MarkusFinholt GoPro labs is not built into the camera, it’s a separate thing for beta/ experimental stuff that you have to install. When did they make NR an option in it? Why hasn’t it been added properly yet?
Anyway we are way off topic. I was simply questioning your statement about it looking like prosumer cameras. I don’t need to repeat my reply there. Thanks! :)
I would love to see you get an android phone such as the XIaomi and use motioncam.
Went to Apple iPhone mostly because of this feature. Not dissapointed. Doing my Reels now with Apple Log and they look like a from movie camera, and very compact design with great features like Magsafe stand. Amazing times.
Now they need to complete the journey by giving us Pro LOG in Cinematic Mode. Then we can really do something special
As long as they limit it to ProRes HQ it’s not going to happen.
i had to sub for Archie yo lol
Wow.
I am surprised you don't know about Motioncam pro which record cinemaDNG on Android.
Yes RAW video.. It's looks great.
Oh I don’t want cinemaDNG on a phone. Manageable sizes are key to making using a phone workable as a filming tool. If the iPhone 15 Pro could only record in ProRes HQ I would be a lot less enthusiastic about it? Having third party apps which let me record in LT or better H.265 made it possible. Cinema DNG is going to fill up the phone very fast, my Xperia 1 V has micro SD card but that’s much too slow.

This Log doesn't do Noise reduction like apple log does so it keeps the micro details. You have greater control over your footage.
@@komekko373 when is this coming out? The problem with Android is not all phones are equal so many will have to buy one that works with it. All iPhone 15 pros are equal.

Few bugs remain but are quite stable. I don't have an estimation but it is near .
Also, I don't really recommend Xperia devices with Third party apps as Xperia has the worst third party compatibility issue. You can apply for alpha users too if you talk with app dev on their Motioncam Community page.
@@philipbloom Axon Nubia Z50S Ultra and upcoming Z60S Ultra are one of the best supported device for MotionCam. Also Xiaomi 13 Ultra and upcoming 14 Ultra with Snapdragon 8 Gen3 will be great.
Avoid Mediatek/Exynos chipsets and Sony Xperia too as they have custom libs that cause mismatch of useful functional keys that operate the app functionality optimally.
