Question re the different ProRes 'flavors' - the Black Magic app let's you choose HQ/normal/LT/Proxy- I think that HQ is def overkill for the data/information coming off that tiny Apple sensor - the question is what is the lowest quality you can drop to (to save file size and make post easier) w/o compromising image quality on an iPhone 15?? Any thoughts- has anyone tested this??
I was kind of confused by when started discussing the blackmagic camera app and you seemed to say using it meant you "didn't have to record in log". I thought this was the ideal format for pro footage?
GREAT VIDEO! Well explained! Draw!!! I wanna a professional JOB but I dont want to use a external HD (evem if I could...know I have a iphone pro 14)... so I was wondering between RECing on 4k or HD.... REC in APPLE ProRes LT or H265.... (1) So imagine is important for me (but I dont want to learn color grading now even if i could..)... Having space on the Smartphone and in the Computer is important.... Have tested 422LT?? For exempla what do you think could be better 4K in H265 or HD in Apple ProRes 422?
Thanks for making this video. Great info. Curious about the Black Magic App. It looks like you can not change the F-stop that it is stuck at F1.8. Do you have to then use a filter and if so which one do you use. Also, doesn't having to leave the f-stop at 1.8 make everything look generic?
I've been using Davinci for awhile for colour purpose and got a chance to film project fully in Log(with GH5) and colour for Log footage(Davinci). I'm still on my iPhone 12 Promax while filming and editing RUclips dance covers videos, looking into upgrading to iPhone 15 ProMax to experiment and upgrade with Log workflow. But choosing the right external storage with good read and write speed are hard, and the overheating issue too. So much to consider before getting a phone. But still thank you for the educational video!!
I have never used my iPhone for work, but the 15 Pro Max is insane! I’ve never had issues with overheating or space, it’s a dream to work with. I’m not gonna tell you to get one, but it’s the first iPhone I’ve owned that I’m using in a professional work flow ;)
Sir can u help me, when i shoot video using my iphone 15promax, the quality is nice but when i uploaded it to youtube it looks grayish, somethinh like greenish . Is there something new about iphone 15 promax setting why its happening?
When compared iphone 15pro max video with iphone 11, I find iphone 11 better because iphone 15 pro max js reflecting warm tone and iphone 11 has natural tone is there any way to fix ?
thank you brother. A question if you'd be so kind. I take stills sometimes from video and frame them. Do you know if and how much better the still quality is with the 15 over earlier models? My 13 pro seems to take "ok" stills but they save as less than 2mp quality
I wish somebody would make a vid on getting pro audio from the Iphone pro max - lots of photos on prorest etc but zero videos on getting pro audio - hint hint
Great video. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like the black magic app is a better option for me. I basically film my content in my workshop with some natural light coming through. I'm basically holding objects in my hand to showcase them and then I'm posting them on instagram. I've noticed my skin tone is a little off when trying to edit in davinci, and also some colors like red are just too bright as well. Seems like the black magic app is the way to film and then I can take it into davinci and do some edits without really worrying about color differences. Am I correct in this thinking? Thank you in advance.
You’re right! It’s gone! I’ve also noticed the Log changed from Log 709 to Log 2020 and now to Log HDR. Well, it’s a new app, but I hope they bring back ProRes 444…
ProRes SDR is easier to work with, especially if you edit your videos and mix it with other cameras. However, if you have some knowledge about SDR and HDR formats, they both work fine.
I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and when I download and run the Blackmagic Camera app my settings only allow two choices for record codec: HEVC (H.265) and H.264. 😞 Frownie face.
Great review. One thing though, low light and LOG is never a good combination. You need a well exposed image for LOG to work, even on the larger cinema camera's. It's the thing were a lot of beginning cinematographers start having issues with noise and "my image sucks" comments. When in low light, better use STD profiles.
You’re absolutely right. And if you insist on shooting log in “low light” you should, as you say, expose the image properly and lower it/grade it in post. Thanks for sharing!
Bro, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro can take 12 bit colour depth photo when ProRaw turned on. But iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro can only take 10 bit colour depth photo when ProRaw turned on. Why ? I don't have an iPhone, so can anyone please let me know if you turn ProRaw in 12 megapixel instead of 48 megapixel, can it take 12 bit photos ? I'm curious about this because, 12-bit = 68 billion colours. But, 10-bit = 1.07 billion colours. That's a huge difference. If iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro cannot take 12 bit photos, that seems to be a huge downgrade ! ???
You’re right regarding the 10 bit 12 bit downgrade. However, 10 bit is still plenty in an iPhone. I come from an iPhone 12 and I’m shocked of the RAW quality in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s more than you need ;)
@@PaulHeimlund Yeah bro, you are right 👍🏻 But, I just wanted to know if it's possible to take 12 bit photos in iPhone 15 Pro Max because even iPhone 12 Pro has it ! We can manipulate colours far more than 10 bit which has 1.07 billion colours compared to 68 billion colours. So, we can have more flexibility in editing the photo. That's why it's a big deal for me. Maybe it's not a big deal for others. It's just feels good to have more Features/Options 🙂
blackmagic log is easy to grade. yes. iphone footage looks like dslm footage? nope. on an standard 27 inch monitor I can already see the codec compression artifacts in your eyes. proRes isn´t the savior for everything.
I completely agree. I made a few follow up videos after this one where I try to make the ProRes iPhone image better (it kinda works) but it cannot compete against a proper camera image.
Mr Paul kindly please tell me the name of the music video timing 5:45
Sure! It's called Other Worlds by Downtown Binary. You can find it on Artlist.
@@PaulHeimlund really appreciated 🙏 wish u all the best
I love that you are wearing a Murphy’s Law shirt. I’ve seen them many times at CBGBs in NYC when I was a kid in the 80’s.
I love how you break it down and show the different settings. Thank you!

I am a Blackmagic camera and Resolve fan and you have sold me on updating to the 15 promax when I upgrade shortly. Thanks
Cool! It’s an awesome camera using the Blackmagic Camera App ;)
@@PaulHeimlundIf only they put Davinci Resolve App in the IPhone could be the best combo out there.
I like your topic but the music is too loud.. I hope you don't mind me pointing it out.
I don’t understand filming terms , depth , 422 , mm and so on where to start
great video but the background music is too loud...it remind me of watching those THX movies

What is your opinion on shooting in H265 Apple Log? I’m a novice so this may have slipped by me if you covered it…
harder on your computer not as easy to grade as prores
As @MrVh78 says it’s not a good combo. You’re gonna run into a lot of issues. However, as Blackmagic’s app is free, you can try it out and test it ;)

Thanks! H265 can be a nightmare to edit, while ProRes is a dream. If you don’t need 4k I’d go for ProRes, and 422LT is fine ;)
At first, I had a problem colour grading Apple LOG. But then after updating the standard workflow, the results are just amazing.
Yeah, the footage is quite impressive, isn’t it!

It’s sounds like you’re filming in prores hdr mode. Go to the camera settings and change prores encoding to sdr. Hope this helps!
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you for such an amazing video!

I don't have the ProRes 4444 as an option anymore. Was it removed? I'm recording directly to an SSD on a 15PM. I'm sure I saw this option last week.

so does Pro Res SDR better than Pro Res HDR?
