I find that if you're working in a Rec.709 timeline, the iPhone Log footage is in Rec.2020 and you need to override the colour space to 709 before applying a Log to 709 LUT as the greens and blues will be overly saturated and look unnatural due to the extra latitude of Rec.2020 in those colours. I got the Apple Log to Rec.709 LUT from the apple dev kit as a baseline and it's great, then I can just work around with that. I'm still testing things, I only just got the 15 Pro Max a couple weeks ago.

I also find that interesting... we all actually have the same color of skin... just different shades!
I appreciate a pro colorist looking at the log footage closely, that exterior night shot was pretty impressive. I still feel that "phone look" to a certain extent but perhaps that's just a huge depth of field?? Additionally, is this something that you could compare head to head against MotionCam to see how it holds up? Since one is log and the other is cinemaDNG it's not a perfect comparison but it should be close, and I don't have either a 40k monitor nor an iPhone to do the tests myself 😅
I don’t understand, why HDR correction? LOG is not HDR. The color space for HDR in Blackmagic Camera app is Rec.2020 - HDR. In any camera you can’t have both, you can choose LOG or you can choose HDR.

Hi Mark, I bought your pack but i'm not getting the same file names that you've used in the video! Plus the ones that I got aren't making things look as good as you're showing on your video, please advise.
Being a Samsung user myself I actually can't wait for this kind of stuff to get to Android, if it ever does. The iPhone was already better at shooting videos before, now it's straight up in another scheme of comparison.

Subscribed ! Question(s). Can a 1tb iPhone 15 bypass the need to film with an SSD on the camera body and just off load the 1TB to the SSD when it’s full? And then you’d just need a 1tb iPhone and an attachment for an ND filter and use Blackmagic and internal LUT? If so I’m getting one today!
something you guys didn't touch on was the motion rendering...everything looks good w/ the phone except the shutter, it always looks like a high shutter speed was used, even when at 1/48. The motion just looks a bit crispy to me. have you noticed this too?
Great video, but I'm sad to see log > 709 LUTs still being released just by themselves as many colorists prefer to have control over their imaging pipeline and would thus prefer LUTs working in intermediate spaces like ACES and DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate without a technical transform baked in. I suggest offering ACES and DWGI variants in addition to the plug&play log>709 version for those who are just interested in the creative look you've made.
@@michaelavrie Same here... unfortunately creating DCTLs for creative looks is much more difficult than baking something you've made in Resolve into LUTs.

I prefer Android for a variety of reasons, and one of those is customizablity and extendability. Given that Android is open-source, there is so much that can be done with it. However, I cannot say I am not impressed with what Apple has done here. In fact, I'm honestly a bit jealous. This feels like something Android should be all over. I get how this fits into the more professional market Apple is wanting to target, but it feels like "here's a version and feel free to do with it what you want" feels right up Android's alley. Granted, I was halfway through writing this comment when I realized LOG is not RAW, but still (and would, thus, likely require more specific effort to bring to Android than just allowing the raw sensor data to be tapped into).
Amazing, I wish I waited for the 15 not go the 14 :-) but from a colourist to say all that stuff it quite a good review on the LOG image that it can do.
I found out that the Blackmagic application writes some other log, the native Apple Lut is not suitable. Native armor is only suitable if you record with an IOS camera. Do you need other lut for BlackMagic?
Hey, can you please test this with the Android counterpart, the "MOTIONCAM" app ? It shoots fully RAW CDNG sequences( 1 second of footage takes around 800MB). It would be interesting to see iphone 15 pro with apple log vs samsung s23 ultra with RAW CDNG. Please take this request.
Hi Mark, thanks for a great video. Please, do you have any idea why i do not see an Apple ProRes 4444 in a Black Magic Camera App? iPhone 15 Pro Max. Only 422HQ. Thanks Tomas
Why do you keep saying "LUT" throughout the video? I thought the colorist said he was using Color Space Transforms which are not LUT's. Resolve doesn't include LUT's for Apple Log (or most anything) because color management is the superior way to manage that kind of stuff. Moving from Apple Log to Rec 709 (or any other color profile) is just very basic math, its not creative in any way, you should never use a LUT to do this, as there is a free built in way to do this using the actual transfer function. The point is there is an actually right answer on transforming footage, once you have an accurate transformation, you apply your creative choices on top of that. I would never use a LUT to do this technical transformation, and I think a good high quality LUT would focus on taking a specific input and applying creative choices on top of it. Something that takes ACEScct as the input and outputs ACEScct, or something that takes in Davinci Wide Gamut and outputs Davinci Wide Gamut, mixing technical transforms with creative looks is a recipe for a bad time.
The colorist you brought it to (according to what was shown on screen) didn't use LUT's, why would you then suggest that is the best way to color grade this? I'm so confused...you even took the time to show the title at ruclips.net/video/_SiqKfm-8kA/видео.htmlsi=TXW3IQ9j9-fUqgjO&t=81
As long as you do colorimetric transforms, i.e. transfer function and primaries, the color space transform is well-defined and the way to go. But when you go from log, linear, or some other scene color space to a display signal there is more to do than just apply the correct transform. Most notably, tonemapping ("contrast curve with highlight rolloff") and gamut mapping ("taking colors your display can't show into the valid range in a pleasant manner). Those are often done best with camera specific display transforms in the form of a lut.
@@Slettador I tend to disagree as gamut and tone mapping are both built into the cst, and even a high quality LUT will have to do interpolation. I think LUT’s are useful for viewing context in camera, or maybe for vfx to give more context. I was pointing out that that is what the colorist in the video was doing. He didn’t use LUT’s.
@@Slettador my point was if you bring it to an expert and he does it one way, then you suggest a different way, what was the point of consulting the expert? In the pinned comment he kinda says that the LUT can also be useful on Sony footage? To me that says that the LUT is not really doing what is expected, if it’s camera specific… My point is that we should use a scientific method of technical transforms and use LUT’S for creative looks on top.
It's not practical to shoot with it but I hope this sets up a trend for getting unprocessed stills/videos. P.s. I hope you did touch the screen at some point.
Isn't it the point that the iPhone is super portable and so *is* practical to shoot with it? With an appropriate small rig, you could even attach a drive on there, complete with zoom mic and stabilization. 🤷♂
Question: I noticed your back magic app had an Apple log 4444 option. I can only get up to 422. How do you access that? I have an external flash drive plugged in. Thanks for the nice vid!

Samsung does have that lovely S23 Pro Max with sweet camera setup. ;) Yes, you can shoot LOG on Android. Filmic Pro, for example, has the option.
@@drinkinslim thanks for the suggestion / recommendation!
Amazing, I wish I waited for the 15 not go the 14 :-) but from a colourist to say all that stuff it quite a good review on the LOG image that it can do.
Incredible..all on an iPhone!

Thanks for video👌
Hi Mark, thanks for a great video. Please, do you have any idea why i do not see an Apple ProRes 4444 in a Black Magic Camera App? iPhone 15 Pro Max. Only 422HQ. Thanks Tomas
updated app removes that feature
Do you recommend Apple ProRes 422 HQ over just 422 if storage space is not an option as it's twice the size?
HQ will help you more recovering highlights in my experience but I find ProRes 422 fine for the most part
Link to that $40K monitor please.. Not that I can afford one in my lifetime but just curious about its specs like delta E, warmup time etc.
10:45 what do you mean by normal footage? What is not normal with the iPhone footage? Isn’t it a sequence of pictures shoot at define frequency
All the luts used in the video are included in the pack??
To me that says that the LUT is not really doing what is expected, if it’s camera specific…
My point is that we should use a scientific method of technical transforms and use LUT’S for creative looks on top.
According to Gerald Undone iso base is 1250
Can you compare it with Sony Xperia
It's not practical to shoot with it but I hope this sets up a trend for getting unprocessed stills/videos.
P.s. I hope you did touch the screen at some point.
Isn't it the point that the iPhone is super portable and so *is* practical to shoot with it? With an appropriate small rig, you could even attach a drive on there, complete with zoom mic and stabilization. 🤷♂
Actually I found that the blackmagic stabilization is terrible compared to iOS Camera and Filmic Pro. What do you think?
in cinematic and extreme mode? Terrible because it is not effective or bc it introduces motion blur or other artefacts?
is there an official apple lut available for download? Premiere pro does not feature it built in
think he wants you to keep your hands away from his screens bro haha
I need phantom lut for Apple Log.
I recognized all the equipment except the monitor and now i know why 😭
Gonna suggest adding an ND Filter :)
What stabilization gear would you recommend for an iPhone 15 Pro Max?
is it possible to get the same level of background blur as cinetmatic mode when using the black magic camera app?
I 100% agree! DON'T TOUCH THE SCREEN!!! In fact don't even point at the screen!
Question: I noticed your back magic app had an Apple log 4444 option. I can only get up to 422. How do you access that? I have an external flash drive plugged in. Thanks for the nice vid!
That was the old version, BM removed that feature in the updated app
Every single one of these iPhone LOG videos on RUclips upsell their LUTs like there's no tomorrow dude.
Bro looks like Steve job's on some side angle shots 😊
