What are your fav A24 Films? Btw big shout to @sennheiser for sponsoring this one! Links to the gear I mentioned in the description.
Mid90s, Talk to Me, and Civil War
You said it,
Waves is a masterpiece, just keep in mind that it's not a super easy watch
hey mark would you recommend sennheiser mke400 to start of with ? 😱😱😱
Tough...they'e all fantastic, truly. At the moment, Aftersun, Past Lives, Hereditary, Ahhh..need to add one more...Beau is Afraid.
Damn...Saint Maude! That ending still haunts me.
The best thing about A24 is their ability to step back and simply fund filmmakers they believe in. Let the art become what it needs to be. They are a helping hand, not a ominous overlord.
Thank you for this. It's so weird to see videos about cinema that praise the corporate entity and have little to say about the filmmaker
Simple, quality over quantity. The biggest difference between A24 and bigger companies like warner bros or marvel is that they aren't greedy and forcing crappy movies out for money. They care about the craft and story.
A24, neon, and blumhouse have been my favorite newcomers thoughout the years
I’d throw in Shudder too
@@linkthenewheroofhyrule7491 yess, I agree
Successors to focus and oscilloscope
A24 films are hit or miss for me sometimes, but I feel the urge to make sure I give their films a chance. I love being inspired by their catalog of work. Favs: Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, Last Black Man, Men, Under the Skin, Problemista, Room, Midsommar, Good Time, The Lobster, Hereditary, Moonlight, C'Mon C'Mon, Marcel. Swiss Army Man.
Focus Features used to be the same for me. Every time I saw a new Focus Feature Film coming out, I just knew it was going to be exceptional!!!!!!!!!
😲 As a sound professional first, I can't believe these rates... That aside, I love how film is still a place where a brand like A24 can disrupt with great storytelling. Always the best from you, Mark.
I think one thing worth mentioning is how relatively affordable camera equipment is nowadays. Civil war was mostly shot on a camera and lens you can buy used for the price of a used Honda Civic. The other camera used was a freaking a7siii. Still expensive equipment but compared to what was standard just 20 years ago it's absolutely insane to think about. I'm personally so excited to see what the next decade brings for Cinema. A24 is just awesome.
We will be watching AI assisted films within a few years.
@@RoodeMenon ehh. We'll see. Personally I see most AI as glorified plagiarism. I'm sure big studios will use it for their films but smaller creators will still exist. A24 will still be doing their thing.
Waves is so underrated!! It rocked me. And totally flew under the radar for so many people.
The reason they are successful is that they showcase films that are relatable common people, emotionally mature, out of the ordinary. Which big studios don't do anymore, they like to do big budget, big stars, too much cgi films that don't relate to the lives we live as people. A24 movies touch region, culture, languages, joy and suffering of these people.
A24's combination of artistic integrity, strategic distribution, and cultural relevance has positioned them as a dominant force in shaping the future of Hollywood.
Always dropping the gems
I absolutely LOVED this!! Such a great way to showcase a company and their secret sauce for success. I am usually not interested about how Hollywood cooks up their films (though I consider myself an avid movie-goer and filmmaker) but this was told in a way that captured my attention fully. Great job as always Mark!
love the stuff you do Mark! Great video 😱
I just discovered A24 a few weeks ago, not realizing I've already seen a number of their films! Needless to say, I'm obsessed. I've been watching so many of their films recently and am anything but underwhelmed. Incredible work all around. Also... *insert shock emoji here* lol
chill n they are a woke mess of a studio
this one was super easy to watch, I enjoyed this style from you
Sweet shotgun mic. I have the Sennheiser g4 lav mics using the Zoom F6 (love it) and might look into a pair of those shotgun mics with the 32bit float and SD cards. Great video Mark. I also love A24 films. No CGI, good original stories, artfully shot and pure cinematic joy to watch. Cheers!
Spot on man. Great video!
Made it. Lol. Great video! I didn't realize how many A24 films I've actually missed till now. Gotta catch up! Thanks.
The shock emoji 😂
A24 inspo film marathon starting in 3, 2, 1...
Great analysis mate. Thanks
Quick tip on the handheld 416, get a short XLR (like 20cm) and move the transmitter away from the mic itself. Your suspension will thank you and the mic will also not wobble so much (and having your subject on-axis, off-axis, on-axis, off-axis, etc). 😱
That’s actually a VERY good idea. Thank you!!
This will have to do: 🫨🫨🫨
Great video, Mark. I like how you touched on “Moonlight” being a very influential part of A24’s overall aesthetic. I totally agree. 👍🏾
When I see A24 films, I think of one thing; that their films centre on humanism. Human stories, human emotions, human conflicts, and human struggles are at the core of their films.
💯
I think what makes a24 successful is that they make their stories so captivating and artsy that you could watch it if it was a24 hour long film as well
🙀 this one? Thanx man, I actually had no idea even though I’ve seen 3 of the movies they all were from the same studio. Very interesting, love your content. Thanks and all the best.
Now I know what to practice with. A24 movies here I come. Thanks Mark.
Love this, and A24 is seriously killing it. I mean Iron Claw was a freakin masterpiece 🙌
What a fun watch, thanks Mark Bone.
Excellent video. Better than many trade publications stories.
That’s £1400 for a sound guy. Holy smokes. In the UK, that’s about double a pro sound recordist.
How do you engage with A24? Make short films? Write a feature script? Board it? Shoot a scene? Write a novel version of script? Make a podcast?
There’s a lot of angles of attack. It’s quite overwhelming for even established corporate filmmakers like me, to engage and make that transition to narrative films. WIP - not easy with family and existing work commitments.
Thanks for the vid Mark. You are a true inspiration for filmmakers 🙌
😱😱 Great video!
If would be in A24 - I would use this as a company presentation video.
😮😮😮
Fun video! Sometimes it's nice just to hear someone riff on something they enjoy from an informed point of view. Nice one 😊
@markbone Thank you for another highly informative video, I have been appreciating them for years now. Question: I see Sennheiser sells the SKP Plugs in 3 different bands (frequency ranges), does it matter which you get? Which do you use? (GW1, G, or Q1-6)
I think a problem for them is releases. They usually release a movie in like 5 theaters, then have a wider release in the next week and sometimes they blow up and get a wider release and also with overseas. Some of these a24 movies don't have overseas releases or not very wide releases like the movie "i saw the tv glow." That movie could have got a lot of attention in domestic and overseas, but it didn't and i guess these bigger budget movies just bullied the ones, because the only a24 movie i have seen is civil war and my theater has 3 screens, so i was lucky to see that one.
Well, awards don’t pay the bills. This is why the Majors prioritize ticket sales over awards. One single MCU film like Avengers 1 made over a billion dollars. It would take MANY A24 movies just to break a billion.
Now the majors do have certain labels meant for movies that revolve around artistry and masterful scriptwriting all on a lower budget. Fox has FOX Searchlight for example.
I should look for these movies thank you mark for sharing this video and points
Been nothing but impressed with A24 over the years. Would love to work with them on a set one day. But the Iron Claw was great. For someone who grew up watching the Von Erichs in Dallas was part of my childhood. This movie brought it home for me about film making.
great video, honestly
Fantastic! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
What a great video!
Loved the video and so accurate on so much stuff. Seems that A24 is not aiming to go more on big budget Hollywood films which I hope they don´t sell out. Also on a side note, not a fan on the Sound Guys, those comments only make our whole cinema craft undervalue. I don´t work on sound but it sad to hear when people say we only press record or only record stuff and don´t really understand the technical side of everything. You can never replace a true sound guy on set.
I love sound guys. Their work is incredible. We just can’t afford them for every shoot but good sound is a must. When there is real budget we will bring them out
Casue they care about the FILM not politics. They make good films that are great new stories. It's a team that cares about the people they bring in
A24 is literally what I've always wanted out of a studio the last 20 years. I said, if someone just went out there and took risks on good ideas, they'd start to kill it.
I never realized why studios didn't go after lower budget films that are higher margin. Especially if you built up a good reputation, you'd easily make the money back and more. A box office bomb wouldn't hurt as badly either since you're not putting all your eggs in one basket.
I hope A24 stays a privately owned company. Going public rarely results in a good product and instead is about shareholders and constantly gaining profit and taking low risks.
Movie budgets are insane. The million of dollars isn't a lot at all. Having seen sets and the amount of people involved for just one scene for example, it's easy to see why. There are so many people involved, think of just all the background extras that are hired, to get a movie up and going, that immersion and quality comes at a cost. Equipment, crew, cast, location rental, etc.
They nurture good movies in the original meaning and not a stream of box office weekend content… simple as that and I hope they will continue to do that! Love your video
Always love a new Mark Bone drop 😱
I love your channel. 😱
I remember watching ex machina for the first time.. I was so drawn into the cinematography n story itself that the ending really caught me off guard
A24 does a lot of buying films that are already done. They are more like a DJ with great taste. Obviously, they have their own too and more so recently, but it's strange this goes unmentioned in videos like this.
The secret is simple. Actors want to act, especially in more grounded pieces. Newer directors, although lacking experience have passion+innovation to get shots needed at that particular budget. They combined both needs to create projects more people want to see with actors who want to stay grounded with the indie vibe. (PS: I'm gonna be next!)
A24 is the only studio innovating right now. Simply put they care about the films over the profits, in turn making more money cause the films are better. I think other studios will notice over time, hopefully. I bawled my eyes out at the end of The Iron Claw. It is such an amazing film.
United Artists Corporation - a major investor in and distributor of independently produced motion pictures in the United States. The corporation was formed in 1919 by Charlie Chaplin, the comedy star; Mary Pickford and her husband, Douglas Fairbanks, the popular film stars; and D.W. Griffith, the director who was a pioneer in the development of camera techniques. They were the leading filmmakers of their day and wanted complete freedom in producing and distributing their films. The company also handled the distribution of high-quality films made by independent producers. United Artists was the first major production company to be controlled by its artists rather than by businessmen. It also started the trend among studios to act as distributing agencies for films other than those it produced. [Encyclopedia Britannica].
Echoes a similar sentiment ?
I hope they can maintain this standard and process for a long time to come. 😲
*Uncut Gems,* Hereditary, *The Lighthouse,* Good Time, *Everything Everywhere All At Once,* Moonlight, *Green Room,* Florida Project, EX Machina, *Talk to me,* Under the Skin, *Spring Breakers* - If i had to choose 1 actress for a Thumbnail that screams A24: Mia Goth (the marketing made her inescapable) their first great Trilogy.
luv it
For the same reason that more people are wondering why a daily parody show has great journalistic value and the ‘News’ has become a reality parody show.
A24 focus on the story while big Hollywood companies focus on social activism
Hey Mark. Agreed 110%. I'd like to see more A24s come on the Hollywood scene and infuse the system with quality filmmaking similar to what happened back in the early 70's. I refused to give a single penny to any big budget film especially the ridiculous superhero films or any film that blows up stuff just to impress the audience. Thanks for bringing these points up and let's search for the next mini studio with brains at the top.
Is the cost of hiring crew going up or down? If everyone is making films and capable of making them, how does that affect crew positions in the overall market???
Sing Sing looks so good!!!!
imma sub
Awesome work! What song is that at 03:47?
I am trying to remember for the life of me
Anyone?? :(
@@jimmyzjamit’s a loop on splice
What's a good lav mic you recommend
They understand the value in low budget filmmaking. Roger Corman utilized it for years and Blumhouse has made a killing from this but more than that, they're actually really good films
Can you do a video on the movie “The Lighthouse?”
Wow! What are your rates as a DoP/cinematographer or director? I bet is expensive. Saying that a sound guy is expensive at $1800 is bold! What kind of budget projects do you guys work on that can’t afford to pay that to a sound guy? Good video about A24.
⚡
If the roadhouse movie had went a little harder it could have been a classic, you are never quite sure if Gyllenhall doesn't just play a total psychopath.
Vox's video about A24 told good reasons why A24 kinda crushing it right now. They know how to pick scripts and also they kinda knew how to hide their shit movies too behind the hype around their good movies
A good amount of their recent films they are just distributing as well
😱
😮😮😮😮
I am going to make an A24 movie!
Tobey Maguire spider for the win! But I did enjoy the MCU until infinity war, the idea that there's one big story linked across like 20 movies all in the same world, I found cool. Then they started pumping out trash. Also, I bet sound people complain about the pricing of cinematographers for their projects🌩
I couldn't find the shock emoji!

Agree with you on alot of them films but uncut gems was overrated, yeah it was stressful but it was a film that’s trailer made it a better film than it was.

Haha. Certainly is
Not mad about it

Civil w@r is thr best film j have seen this year

Cause they're actually releasing good and interesting films
Big budgets kill creativity. Look at how good Godzilla minus one is compared to the Hollywood version
😱😱😱
Love their style of making HORRIBLE endings 🔥🙏😂
😲 Uncut Gems
Song at 3:47?
i want a streaming service with only a24 films lol
You video is great. If i had to resume this i just say: They make a thing know since many, many years as MOVIES. The rest of hollywood become in a machine of eye candy crap that look like a videogame, not as a movie.
Shock emoji.
damn its like miramax all over again
