With this setup using the DJI mic with are Bluetooth and the record 32 bit float with the mics on board storage and much cheaper than rode. Thanks for your video.
I was thinking the same thing however, the MagSafe battery interferes with the proper mounting of any ND filters because the magnet is really close to the lens.
nice set up, for my needs i don't think i need that 180 degree adapter. pardon my lack of tech know how, but you could just plug your rig directly to the phone no?
Amazing guidance for the specific use case you laid out, brilliant. In my case, I'd love to shoot with log and and ND filter, but I would like the ability to record sound internally. Looking at the record modes on the 15pro, I see that it can shoot log in 1080, potentially negating the need for a external SSD if the clips were somewhat short, like a cinematic shot of my toddler picking her nose at the beach and then pissing her pants. I have a small pocketable microphone I could plug in to get around the phone's mic being blocked by the ND filter? What do you think? I know some footage looks best when downsampled from 4K to 1080, so I really don't know if the image quality we're after demands 4K recording, in which case, I'll have to potentially bin this whole thing. Home movies without sound just seems kind of sad.
Yes will work absolutely. I record straight into cam if I don't have my SSD setup to hand in 4k Pro res LT, and then you can utilise the USB C for audio. And look, there's also absolutely nothing wrong with 1080 in my opinion. Nice even smaller setup with only the ND filter.
Don’y let anybody con you into buying proprietary filters. Polar Pro’s iPhone 15 case takes standard filters. Also, note that an iPhone 15 will recognise only a limited number of NVMe drives, and this particular enclosure gets clobbered by a number of Amazon reviewers.
If you buy the Polar Pro case (which is more expensive) you also have to buy the seperate filter adapter. You also have to screw your filter on and off everytime you use it. Unlike the Sherpa's version which lets you snap them on and off in an instant. It's not a con, it's a better system. And as mentioned in other comments this NVME drive works exceptionally well as long as it's been formatted first on your computer. Sharpen up.
I recently bout an iPhone 16 pro and went with your advice on the Jeyi 2230 SSD enclosure, the size and fit are great. One question, does yours get really hot? I was amazed at how hot it got only after a few minutes of using it. Thanks!

Thank you for this detailed video. Used your Amazon links to purchase the Kingston SSD and the JeYI Enclosure. But the sad part is I could not get it to detect the SSD drive on the iPhone pro max. Is there anything I missed out or any configuration ?

I didn't but, I did consider it, I just think that you really want to place it right where the SSD is. So it would be slightly awkward placed next to the SSD. However it would still work well for Selfies and placing it on a tripod.
Hi, I need a bit of help. Where can I find the link you mentioned in the description? Could you please send it to me? Also, from what you said, it seems that exFAT is the best format. Could you clarify how I can get in touch with you for more details? Thanks!
A couple of questions... What mic setup were you using for this vid since it sounded different than the mobile setup? I take it it's not as mobile. And would you recommend anything different 8 months later? I still use the 15 Pro.
I think it would depend on what anamorphic lens you are using. Some may have a front filter, I think freewell do a set that is compatible with these filters.
Hey buddy, thanks! Great video. It is unclear for me which wider angle adopter you use. The link links to several options, but the wider option does not look like the one you are using in the video. Can you clarify? Thanks mate!
I use both of those adapters, they are not wide angle, they are just ND filters to control the amount of light you are letting into the lens. Each adapter is a different strength, If I were to pick one, I'd go with the 6-9 stop ND the stronger one as I use it most often.
Hello this is great, I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned but adaptor transfers at 20gbps and you specify using one with 40… I cannot find a tidy right angle adaptor like this with the correct transfer rate… woouls appreciate any help … great video thanks
I want this setup over the Lexar Go purely because of the price and I don’t really need a hub. I have read that this setup gets very hot, is that true? And also, that you need to format it first otherwise iPhone will not recognize it?
With the thermal paste applied, I don't have issues with the SSD getting too hot. But it's possible they could have changed the SSD since I purchased it. Yes you will have to format it before using with the iPhone.
Yeah me too I have this, and the only Issue I'm running into with the setup in the video is that the USB c adapter suggested can't get all the way into the phone with the polarPro case.
the problem with syncing the audio files later ... is finding which audio files go with each movie file... it really can be a headache.. I personally use usbc port for a wireless mic receiver ( so no ssd) but of course then getting footage off of iPhone takes time.. ... great video! I too been searching and experimenting with minimizing my setup.. thanks side note (rant) .. I still dont see why Apple has not yet made a "receiver" built in the iPhone and and sell iPhone Mics ... call them iMics or something I dont care... plus have more than two mics that can connect .. its 2024 I dont see how this is not solved yet...]
There isn't a large enough market for Apple to solve the microphone problem. Facebook had to enter the VR space before Apple thought the numbers would work. Just how Blackberry showed Apple that the smartphone market was worthwhile. I think you're going to see Apple continue to make the iPhone the best portable all-around camera on the market. They already have the photo market on lock. Next up is the video market. Maybe they'll target the filmmakers next?
Hey thank you for your video!! I bought the same ssd & set up you but I did have an issue with my phone reading it. Do you know what could be a solve for this?
Yes you need to format the drive first using your computer, I formatted it as Exfat drive using disk utility, once formatted your drive will be visible by the phone.
Cool video, but I'll just keep using my DJI Pocket 3 since you get everything in one small package, including internal connection for 2 DJI Mic 2's without the transmitter. I will use my iPhone 15 Pro Max for handheld shooting with little to no accessories since it's a pain in the ass to mount anything without a cage and a bunch of shit dangling and sticking out from it. I guess if you already have the phone and don't wanna spend the cash on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 creator combo and an additional DJI Mic 2, then you can rig out the phone instead on the cheap.
I think there's another solution to external SSD which I haven't seen anyone suggest - put it in your pocket and link it via a USB cable. I've tried it and it works fine as long as you do shots carefully.
So I actually bought all this. Awsome setup. However, the black magic app says it’s skipping frames and stops recording after a minute and saying let the iPhone cool down. iPhones not hot, but the SSD sure is. Was this tested out fully by yourself and did it work indefinitely when recording on the black magic app? Thank you.
Fully tested by myself. I've had it overheat in 30 degree weather occasionally. But in normal climates no issues, did you put some thermal paste on the SSD? That's the only issue I can think of.
@@thesavagefilmmaker yeah it was these little gummy pads I believe that the chip came with. Been filming and hasn’t happened again yet so maybe it was just a fluke. Appreciate the response.
Hi man! , this is the best video I have seen so far on this topic (and I have seen a lot of them since I am analyzing in depth the possibilities of iPhone 15 vs Osmo Pocket 3). impressive work. instant subscription! thank you. The main reason why I started this analysis is that I'm going to start an interview project on RUclips. which I want to record with two cameras: one frontal and another that goes from 45 degrees to 90 degrees framing the interviewee. Watching this video led me to visit your channel and watch the video “IPhone 15 Pro: A true Cinema Camera?” ¨ in which you mention at 3´ and 26 ¨ that the iPhone 15 does not perform as well as a camera for portraits and close-ups and that is something fundamental for my project, since I do not want the iPhone and its camera man to be so close to the interviewed. Do you think that if I added some iPhone lenses to this setup that you propose here, it could improve this problem? If so, do you consider any superior to others? Because until now the comparison between the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and the iPhone 15 Pro, considering the pros and cons of both for my project, the setup that you put together works better for me. It's just that this problem of close-ups and portraits has caused me to rethink whether this is the best for me. Would you be so kind as to give me your opinion on this matter, please? I thank you at the same time as I apologize for the length of the text. Cheers! 😄
I think the iphone is not the best camera for your specefic use case. I also don't think the Osmo Pocket 3 is that good an option. They will both be good for the wide angle and they will both be not so good for the close-up angle (if you are using two) I do not have much experience with Iphone lenses, but from what I've seen, they are not amazing quality. Personally I'd recommend find a couple of cheaper 'normal' camera's for interviews, or use one Iphone and one normal camera. Something like the Blackmagic pocket 4k and a lens will cost potentially less than the iphone and could be a good alternative for the type of project you're talking about.
Should I format the drive exFAT or APFS, Mac journaled for IOS on a mac? I do have one older mac that I might use it on, but most of the time, it would be a newer mac.

I wonder if the DJI osmo mobile 6 will work. The idea of a gimbal that is pocketable is also key for me
I think the issue with the OSMO is the clearance on the side might not be adequate.
great video thanks for that! any idea on how to connect the external hard drive but also a battery at the same time? was looking forward to the lexar solution, but apparently not out yet
You would probably do it with some type of splitter, but I’m yet to try it.
I ordered the products many thanks for this video. No blah blah just straightforward. Super clear thanks a lot. Keep it coming
Glad it helped
@@thesavagefilmmaker i have it all and didnt work does not read me nmwe card
@@dcreationwoodworking3495 same why is this happening
With this setup using the DJI mic with are Bluetooth and the record 32 bit float with the mics on board storage and much cheaper than rode. Thanks for your video.
Thanks for sharing.
You just got yourself a sale!! Ordered today.
Thanks brother!
Thanks alot i was will buy from lexar but this better , and how much thickness for thermal pads i see 0.5mm and 1mm , 1.5mm
I would suggest the thinnest.
Totally agree. Minimalistic is the way to go with smartphones. Nice video
Yes! Thank you!
Thank you. Why is the front facing mic covered? Do you mean the mic next to the Camera on the back?
I like it the only thing missing is, how do you charge when your battery gets crazy low from shooting in PRO-RES
MagSafe battery pack?
I was thinking the same thing however, the MagSafe battery interferes with the proper mounting of any ND filters because the magnet is really close to the lens.
nice set up, for my needs i don't think i need that 180 degree adapter. pardon my lack of tech know how, but you could just plug your rig directly to the phone no?
Yes you can, but it's a bit of a loose connection if you have the iphone in a case.
Greetings from the West Island. This is an excellent video. You have a new subscriber.
Thanks and welcome! 🙏
Thank you so much! Your style, colors and visuals are exactly what i'm looking for;) Cheers from Chile.
Thanks 🙏
Hey, at 6:29 isn't the SSD hiding the record button on screen? How do you manage around that?
Use the button on side to trigger recording
@@thesavagefilmmaker Thanks 👍
Thanks!
Much appreciate thank you!
Thanks!
This is news to me, perhaps they’ve changed something internally. Mine gets a little bit warm but not at all hot. Are you using with thermal paste?
@@thesavagefilmmaker I am using the thermal paste provided with it. Would you recommend a different paste? Also, I went with the WD_BLACK 1TB SN770M M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, don’t know if that has anything to do with it.
Amazing content. As a new IP15 owner, I can see that I have a lot to learn (and purchase). Why can't the wireless lavalier mics be connected by Bluetooth to the phone again? Subscribed.
I think you can use the new DJI mic's with bluetooth, however the audio quality drops drastically.
How did you solve the external audio part with the combo Hoheim iSteady M6 + iphone 15 pro?
Just had to record audio separately I’m afraid.
@@thesavagefilmmaker Thanks for the reply!
I actually used a Belkin USB-C 3.2 Hub to connect both storage & audio on the Hohem iSteady M6. Lark M2 for Audio and Kingston Datatraveler max 512GB Flashdisk for fast writing/reading.
It's ugly but it works :3
@@llhikooo This is what I’m thinking about doing as well. I have a hohem gimbal and microphone and was trying to figure out how to utilize the set up he was describing but adding my mic so I don’t waste money by not using the microphone. I’m less than one month into this “hobby” so I’m ignorant on how to set up my iphone 15 pro max with gadgets
Quick question: you said get the usbc to usb type c 40gbps version, but the one in your video said it was a 20 gbps. Which one? Can’t find a 40. Thnx from the states! (Instant sub!)
Sorry I mispoke only 20 gbps is the version I use.
Such a great set up. Thank you for sharing! I’m building my kit based on this advice
Thanks glad it helped.
Me too but then thinking of what to do about the voice problem ?I mean if use the filter then voice quality goes down.
@@RAMNIKK the audio problem is real… having a separate audio recording device is the way to go.
Great presentation. I share your concerns about converting the slim sleek i phone into an octopus with all the attachments. After years of lugging a 100 pound back pack in the Army, I can appreciate a rig that is simplistic, light and less cumbersome while on the go. My only question to you is Where do I purchase thermal paste for the ssd you recommended ? Again thanks for the informative and concise video !
I just went to my local Computer store for the thermal paste. But you can also get it from Amazon very affordably.
@@thesavagefilmmaker what you used is a thermal pad and no paste. don´t confuse those 2 terms cause paste will make a mess inside this nvme case. you should actually link the used thermal pad within your video description. the rest of you video is great though! thanks for this neat setup!
Thank you for this detailed video. Used your Amazon links to purchase the Kingston SSD and the JeYI Enclosure. But the sad part is I could not get it to detect the SSD drive on the iPhone pro max. Is there anything I missed out or any configuration ?
Yes I had to format the drive on my Mac using disk utility before my iPhone could read it. Once formatted it will show up on your iPhone.
@@thesavagefilmmakerthank you for that. This absolutely worked for me!
This looks compact and clean but I need to plug the DJI mic 2 into the USB C
Only downfall is the lack of audio splitter options.
Just use their internal record function, you‘re already doing the extra step of shooting log, then you can also sync that audio
Do you still recommend ND filters if you film with your phone indoors? Some low light situations as well.
Depends on your environment and how bright it is in doors. I still use them. But for low light I only have the mist filter on.
Nice setup! Btw, are you reading a script towards the side of the camera?
I'm reading a teleprompter in the front of the camera.
I got the setup. my remaining issue is how to deal with storing the setup when not in use specifically the backside of the nd filter when not being used. is there perhaps a lens cap that can be placed over the back when its not being used do not really want to take the filter on and off every time i use it but that may be the best way
Great vid, have you tried the free well hand grip with that ssd? Looks like it could almost fit with out getting in the way.
I didn't but, I did consider it, I just think that you really want to place it right where the SSD is. So it would be slightly awkward placed next to the SSD. However it would still work well for Selfies and placing it on a tripod.
That set up looks so cool 😎
Great for run and gun filming 👌
Hi, I need a bit of help. Where can I find the link you mentioned in the description? Could you please send it to me? Also, from what you said, it seems that exFAT is the best format. Could you clarify how I can get in touch with you for more details? Thanks!
Completely agree with your arguments mate. Got the same setup.
This tutorial is mega! Thank you!
great video ! the video quality of this video was awesome ...
Thanks so much!
Will the DJI Osmo 6 handle the extra weight? I really like your set up but already have a gimbal. I will use your links. Great video.
I think it might be okay weight wise. But can't be sure, I picked the Hohem because it could handle the heaviest payload.
Thanks for the reply.@@thesavagefilmmaker
A couple of questions...
What mic setup were you using for this vid since it sounded different than the mobile setup? I take it it's not as mobile.
And would you recommend anything different 8 months later? I still use the 15 Pro.
I still use the 15 pro. 16 is not worth the upgrade in my opinion. I’m recording separately to the Shure Sm7b for audio in my talking head setup.
great vid - the NDs are great for the in-camera lenses but what about putting NDs on anamorphics? is there a solution?
I think it would depend on what anamorphic lens you are using. Some may have a front filter, I think freewell do a set that is compatible with these filters.
excellent comprehensive guide to iphone film making.
Thank you.
never using a case which blocks the microphone!, and amazon has a pro ssd add on which has a plug for ext usb mic, is there a smaller ND filter?
The case doesn't block the microphone. All Filters you put over the front lens will block one of the microphones.
Hi great video!! Is there a compatibility issue with gen 4 m.2 nvme?
Not that I know of
Least of the evils awesome thank you ❤
Thanks for this video! For some reason, your direct to app links are not working for me 😢
Sorry, not sure what the issue is there.
Sorry I actually haven't found a 40GPS angle adapter.
@@thesavagefilmmaker ok no problem cheers… I’ve found cables … but you have had no issues with the adaptor you are using in the video right?

Absolutely, stay tuned!
isn't that one only 60FPS compatible?
I have tested WD Black SN770M NVMe: works fine (as alternative to that kingston one)
Love this video… I have a BMPCC 6k Pro .. I don’t need my iPhone to be a tank
Bro said Beast Video
Great stuff but question: The M.2 you selected was Gen4....Ive yet to find a Gen4 that the iphone will recognize. Only Gen3...thoughts?
You just need to format it first using Disk Utility on a Mac computer, once it's formatted it will be readable on the Iphone.
I have. 4 different nvme. Multiple formats. Does not see. Gen 3, no problem every time
I like this setup but I'm trying to understand what you are transmitting your audio to, if your Rode receiver isn't plugged into the iPhone?
Rode wireless pro records straight into its transmitters as well as the receiver. So record into its transmitter and then synch in post.
love your video man, but one question does it really require gen4 m.2 for the iphone 15 pro? is gen3 good enough for filming ProREs 422 LT?
Can’t say for sure as I have not tested.
I like the PolarPro Litechaser system...
A lot more expensive.
I too been searching and experimenting with minimizing my setup.. thanks
side note (rant) .. I still dont see why Apple has not yet made a "receiver" built in the iPhone and and sell iPhone Mics ... call them iMics or something I dont care... plus have more than two mics that can connect .. its 2024 I dont see how this is not solved yet...]
Absolutely 👍
There isn't a large enough market for Apple to solve the microphone problem. Facebook had to enter the VR space before Apple thought the numbers would work. Just how Blackberry showed Apple that the smartphone market was worthwhile.
I think you're going to see Apple continue to make the iPhone the best portable all-around camera on the market. They already have the photo market on lock. Next up is the video market. Maybe they'll target the filmmakers next?
Great video!
Thanks!
great idea. I love the minimalist set up. Thank you
Glad you like it!
When you have the SSD facing the screen, how do you access and touch the screen on the Blackmagic camera app? The SSD is covering the controls.
I press one of the iphone buttons to record and set my settings before connecting the SSD.
Do you have a solution to use external drive and another acessories, rode goII, for example??? Regards
Not currently
True, absolutely an option if you don't mind that wire hanging between your pocket and the phone.
Pretty cool stuff ✌👽
Thanks!
Really good tips especially the SSD setup. Added to my Amazon list.
Glad it was helpful!
아주 좋은 생각이다! 굿

Great video man
Glad you enjoyed
Thoughts on the Samsung usb C Flash drive? It’s even smaller. Is the write speed not fast enough?
Write speeds too slow. Tried it, but had constant issues.
I also had some problems today. Than I changed the exfat cluster size up to 1mb. Works fine again.
Hi man! , this is the best video I have seen so far on this topic (and I have seen a lot of them since I am analyzing in depth the possibilities of iPhone 15 vs Osmo Pocket 3). impressive work. instant subscription! thank you.
The main reason why I started this analysis is that I'm going to start an interview project on RUclips. which I want to record with two cameras: one frontal and another that goes from 45 degrees to 90 degrees framing the interviewee.
Watching this video led me to visit your channel and watch the video “IPhone 15 Pro: A true Cinema Camera?” ¨
in which you mention at 3´ and 26 ¨ that the iPhone 15 does not perform as well as a camera for portraits and close-ups and that is something fundamental for my project, since I do not want the iPhone and its camera man to be so close to the interviewed.
Something like the Blackmagic pocket 4k and a lens will cost potentially less than the iphone and could be a good alternative for the type of project you're talking about.
thanks for your answer !
Should I format the drive exFAT or APFS, Mac journaled for IOS on a mac? I do have one older mac that I might use it on, but most of the time, it would be a newer mac.
I formatted to exFat with no issues.
when flipping the ssd around when using a gimbal, does that impede using the black magic app controls on screen?
Yes a it does.
