IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention you need to cover the back of the filter with tape to avoid any light leaks. Here's a link to a great Blackout tape choice: geni.us/DPJBLKTAPE Thanks again
This was really confusing to me as well, but for anyone else who may have been confused, I think I may have figured it out. Look at the overhead shot at the 2:57 mark. The INSIDE of the filter ring is 58mm so that it will fit over ALL the lenses. (Something smaller may not fit and/or could partially obscure any one of these lenses.) But notice the *INSIDE* of this 58mm circle is also slightly *TOO LARGE* and extends beyond the OUTER EDGES of the PHONE. Notice how you can see through the ring, past the phone, and onto the table underneath - slightly in the upper left, and more so on the top edges. (Another example is the sky poking through the top of the phone during the demonstration of the filter ring at the 2:54 mark.) This means that if you're holding the phone up, and there's any light shining from BEHIND you, that non-filtered light may possibly 'leak in' from behind you, REFLECT off the back of the ND filter, and then 'leak' - or bounce-back - onto the front-facing lenses. So you may need to 'square-up' or somehow black out those 'holes' where the 58mm ring goes beyond the edges of the phone to cut any light leaking in from around or behind you. Maybe cut out a round piece of black poster board or felt or something to fit the 82mm ring and then cut out a hole that exactly matches the rounded-square casing of the lenses and then tape that to the back of the ring. I don't know. Sounds kind of janky and I'm not even sure how big a problem this may be. I suppose I may have to spend several hundred dollars to find out! :) Hope this helps. It wasn't obvious to me. But it was a pinned "IMPORTANT NOTE" and I found myself asking questions like... "light leaks?" ... "tape what?" Really hoping we get some feedback if this was a fairly accurate description, if it's really much of a problem, or if any elegant solution has arisen. I might even subscribe. :) But granted... this was a big wall of words. Until then, I've moved everything out of my cart and into a wish list while I consider if I'd rather just use other, more expensive, proprietary solutions as mentioned in the introduction. Thank you for all your hard work. There was a ton of useful information in this video!
Your filter adapter solution should be proclaimed from rooftops across the land! Really elegant, kind of obvious and far better than the current run of proprietary ideas.
The content of this video is a pure gold, I spent a lot of hours to find how to build a great iPhone rig with my existing filters of big cameras, but always struggling with some limitations. Here is the final answer. Thanks a lot!
i wish I saw your video first! I just spent a week and $$$ figuring out how to make a portable and powered rig. Yours is much more compact and there's still room for a mic or spotlight! Bravo sir, well done!
I’ve been using my iPhone professionally for over a year on a daily basis with customers. Two tips: - A cage protects your phone better. And there’s always a step up ring set that goes from 35mm to 82mm. - Your filter adapter has openings on the back because it sticks outside your phone. That leads to reflection. Light will fall in from behind and reflect against the back of your filter. This is also solved with step up rings. I use Beastgrip products and I’m very happy with it. Price is good.
I Did answer in the pinned comment about that gap. I just forgot to mention it in my video, check it out Keep in mind this DIY solution is mainly for people who don’t want to invest in cages with proprietary filters that cost a lot, it’s just an easy and affordable way to use your existing filters and iPhone cover.
@@THEDPJOURNEY I agree: I’d never buy a cage where the vendor locks you in for their filters or add on lenses. That’s the beauty of cages with a standard thread and step up rings. Meanwhile I also have an Neewer cage, also with an 58mm filter holder. I’m using a 20 year old pola filter I had from my photography hobby.
This is the best minimalist and cheapest 3-Part Magsafe Setup. More of this kind of video pls. DIY setups with the cheapest option but above the top quality! And definitely will do the job!
cannot thank you enough for coming up with this DIY hack. I am trying to build a small/lightweight solutiuon that also works with a waterproof case and I think you have nailed it!

@@THEDPJOURNEY thanks! I have solved that by getting a smaller filter lens (67mm) with a 55-67 mm adapter, almost no light comes from the back and it fits well. For the front reflection, I noticed that being very careful when glueing and aligning the adapter in a way that the filter is perfectly parallel to the lens solves the issue. Thank you for the video, it was very very useful :)

I have found the Powrig Magfilter system to be a good alternative as a lens filter mount. It's basically just a plate that magnetically mounts onto the phone and the receiver is just a standard filter screw-on. You would need a case, though. It uses its own magnet to mount, and you wouldn't wanna tape another magnet onto the back of your phone.
Simply straight to the point and 1000% usable. This presentation was a piece of art from the lighting to the transitions, etc. It was one of the best meals ever to my eyes. 🎉
It's so great to see someone that thinks like me. All of the rigs you can buy are too complicated. It makes me want to do a 3D printed piece that just has a filter mount, a tripod thread, and a MagSafe attachment. Small, versatile, and easy to remove.
Exactly, I started this channel to share my experience working as a DP, what I learned, still learning and what I go through to be able to do what I do. Which sometimes means DIYing stuff. It wasn’t about reviewing gear to get them for free, I review them just because I’m considering them for my work. Thanks again for your support
Honestly beyond that point, I would just use a mirrored camera. Just because this will defy the main advantage of the iPhone: a great camera that can fit in my pocket.
Yup, I already showed the Magsafe charger option, but the phone battery lasts pretty long time anyway. If it dies, you can charge for 15 min to give you another couple of hours of runtime
For the storage, you might wanna look into (one of these days) using one of those very simple $10 USB-C external m.2 NVME adapter dongles they sell on Amazon. You can even do what I did and open up the housing for the nvme adapter and all you really use/need out of it is the PCB board that has the m.2 connector pins and stuff on it, that's attached to a USBC female port at the end of the board. It'll reduce the size by 50% or more, and you can then get yourself a couple of high-quality thermal heat dissipation pads to overlay on the nvme drive and you could get away with basically sticking the whole thing to the back of a battery bank or some other attachment you're using. This way, I was able to go from using a Samsung T5 or T9 external SSD (not a huge drive or anything) which is like the size of a pack of playing cards, down to something that's barely bigger than the size of a pack of Juicy Fruit chewing gum.
Yeah I’m actually looking into them these days, working on animated episode to feature that. Keep in mind not everyone is that deep into DIY to attach an Nvme into an enclosure. But good stuff
Good idea actually. The good. Wes is that I’m about to release a new updated episode with another version that has many examples that you just mentioned. Stay tuned, releasing in a couple of days
It's a nice cheap option, but the problem is the gap with the adapter ring for filter , it can let light coming inside the filter... not sure it will works. Of course none brands create a good concept case permission photographer to use their own existing filter, except the Polar Pro system don't let mount all anamorphic lens brand expect Moment but only on the Litechaser 14 and lens adaptor for filter mount isn't available for adding VND filter actually . Freewell solution is expensive but everything works. It's a bit frustrating having expensive filter for photography like the polar pro one and not be able to use it on the iPhone .All the best
True, in fact I forgot to mention the solution in the video with a super easy fix to that with gaff tape, but I put that in the pinned message under the video. Of course you can still go the expensive option with Freewell, but DIY is DIY, it works as expected… with a little extra work from your side
Great explanation and I made already good use of it. I do have one point of attention: one Crucial died on me during a recording after only three days of use. The BM app gave an error message and that was it. I finished the day using internal storage only. Couldn't repair it, despite using professional tools. In the end I was able to recover apx 520Gb of data (using EaseUS and Diskwarrior, both on Mac). My other Crucial worked fine. I have no idea why the SSD stopped working. I used the short flat-cable you described, and also taped the connectors to the iPhone and to the SSD as I use the setup in a dynamic situation involving unicycles (see my shorts). I didn't drop the hardware, didn't hit anything. Crucial didn't have an explanation, but they offered a replacement disk straight away. I will use that, but will also look into a setup using fast SD-cards.
Really really love the third MagSafe rig. Have you found a useful and ergonomic way to include battery power, storage and nd filter all in one? I'm building an Amazon cart as we speak. I want to be able to use that rig outdoors in sunlight, but I can't find a case that has a square/snap-on variable nd filter to go with it. It seems a regular sized ND filter would not work. Thoughts?
What a fantastic video. Great information, and very nice production values. No cuts between three different angles on the face - more concentrating on the task at hand - nice.
Haha, welcome to the club. The Ulanzi phone clamp is worth a try, allows for clamping Samsung T7 between clamp and phone case, has 1/4 20 mount. Filmmaking just got a whole lot better.👍🎥
Dear author: I'm a fan of rigging and I LOVED YOUR RIG. This video is more than I was hoping for. You're IQ must be way up 😂. Thank you so much for this vid.
These lenses are usually proprietary to the manufacturer, they would have proprietary amounts. So I don't think you'll find any DIY solution to add Lenses.
I really want to see your look and review dedicated to Sony FX30. It checks a lot of boxes and for people like me that still love APS C, it might be a great camera. Cheap, smal and lightweight lenses. There are quite a lot advantages.
in that setup phone will heat like anything. my iphone 15 pro max heats up so much when i shoot 4k 60 fps... with charging on and ssd connected it gets even more heated i think
Heat is nothing strange to video. I personally didn’t have any issues with it on this phone after almost 3 hours of shooting. Did you have any issues? Caused by heat?
@@THEDPJOURNEY I guess because I live in place where temperature is always 38-43 degree Celsius 🥲 iPhone heats a lot when I’m using heavy and while also while recording 4K videos
Such a great setup that I’ve not seen bettered after all this time! I would be interested to see how you taped up the overhangs to prevent light from entering and whether it’s good for the long term or if you now have any other ideas to shield it more permanently?
Honestly tape works so good that I didn’t consider any permanent solution. A friend of mine suggested a 3D printed solution, but again that would make it less compatible and modular
Thank you so much for your support! I’m about the finish editing the episode about H265 v ProRes this week. So stay tuned, it’ll be a big one. Thanks again
@@THEDPJOURNEY Awesome! As a content idea, you can control the BlackMagic camera app with all the Tilta Nucleus systems including the new Nano II. I did a quick one about the app and Nano II, but you have a much larger audience that would probably appreciate the content.
Great job again my man, you come up with the goods! It's pretty much what I had in mind myself, utilising the MagSafe with that crucial drive but I was going crazy just trying to find a simple filter adapter already on the market. DIY is the solution and you nailed it! Thanks dude... can't see myself shelling out $$$ for anything unless it's a lightweight, modular cage that allows universal NOT proprietary filters
fantastic! Like a puzzle! But it sure works! I have a 15promax and I want to use blackmagic app to record in Pro Res LT -more then enough for me-and I will use my Samsung T7 SSD. Thank your for breaking down your "rig"! I will use the iphone for Broll and other footage that I cannot take with my Sony FX30. PS the only accessory that I can't find is the mag safe puck...the link doesnt take me to it
I got the wrong product on Amazon when clicking on your links as I'm in the UK. What was the make and size of the velcro dots please? Great video, shame about the links not always working. But I love the smallness of this set up and that I can reuse my filters!
First of all, nice video man !!! Going to try this for iPhone 16 Pro. Also gonna look if you have a video for the 16. But anyway, I think I'm gonna try the second option, w/ the wallet...but I'm gonna try it with the MOMENT case, because they have the new SQUARE-VND filter for their case, that keeps everything super small. Your video is great tho man, great ideas ! Thx !
I did the same thing but the issue with that filter mount is the light leak from those opening on the sides. On certain situations you would even see reflection.
It happened with me a couple of times as well only with the wide lens, but I just added tape. Again it's cheaper than buying a whole new set of filters
@@THEDPJOURNEY amazing to hear! I just made the mistake of buying a rig for 49mm threads (I wanted to keep it super small). With 49mm, the widest lens is unusable, way too much vignette from one of the corners. GREAT to hear this system works. Thanks for making this, SUPER helpful! 🙌🏼
Great video! I'd watched this when it first dropped as I had just bought the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but was not shooting enough video to worry about filters and external storage. Now, however, I find myself looking for a solution wherein I can mount a VND and a black pro mist filter and the Small Rig cage I was eyeing requires, as you note, proprietary magnetic filters. I was even hoping to use the Moment case I had picked up, but it seems there may not be a solution with Moment wherein I can use the Moment case, then mount only the BPM and VND.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention you need to cover the back of the filter with tape to avoid any light leaks. Here's a link to a great Blackout tape choice: geni.us/DPJBLKTAPE Thanks again

Look at the overhead shot at the 2:57 mark. The INSIDE of the filter ring is 58mm so that it will fit over ALL the lenses. (Something smaller may not fit and/or could partially obscure any one of these lenses.)

Maybe you need to turn on “all notifications” on RUclips and in the phone settings you need to enable notifications as well.
Thanks for your support
Thank you...I have them all on for you.@@THEDPJOURNEY
How about doing.a short video using the various setups in conditions described, etc. That would be most useful. Great design.
Of course you can still go the expensive option with Freewell, but DIY is DIY, it works as expected… with a little extra work from your side
that filter mount thingy is quite genius
thank you very much
Thanks man, really happy you liked it
Nice job - but what about external monitor and audio recording with external mics??
We have some not bad solutions out there from third parties via USB-C, What I thought of is a clean monitor out. I ddint add it thoguh.
BRILLIANT! Thank you for putting this together and sharing - greatly appreciated
My pleasure!
This is really a very good budget guide for beginners.
You can also buy a magnetic holder with 1/4 screw mount in it.
Yup, but that would prevent you from mounting the filter mount or ssd
Minimalist thinking. Well done!
Cheers thanks
I’ve been looking for a threaded 67mm solution. Thanks for the many alternatives and examples Thank you!
Happy to help!
this is why i subs to you way back! way to go....
Thank you so much 🙏
Stay tuned cuz I have a new rigging episode coming next
wow i saw so many gear videos so complicated. This is bar far the best!!!!
I cant find magsafe adapter. Your link aint good. Help
Where do you live? Do you have Amazon where you are?
@@THEDPJOURNEY yes, i have. I am in europe
NEEWER PA010 should work the same, and comes with a 1/4" 20 thread as a bonus. Still relatively cheap.
Thank you so much Patrick for your appreciation of this video. Happy to offer a straight to the point video, being mindful of everyone’s time 😊
I love how neat your works are, dude!
Much appreciated, thanks
Brilliant!
Cheers thanks
Haha, welcome to the club. The Ulanzi phone clamp is worth a try, allows for clamping Samsung T7 between clamp and phone case, has 1/4 20 mount. Filmmaking just got a whole lot better.👍🎥
Which one is it? Keep in mind we need a pretty deep clamp to hold the phone +SSD+filter mount, all iphone clamps I found can only hold the phone.
Another awesome post man! Great ideas! looking forward your next one!
Glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned
Dear author: I'm a fan of rigging and I LOVED YOUR RIG. This video is more than I was hoping for. You're IQ must be way up 😂. Thank you so much for this vid.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Really appreciate it
Look at the powrig filter mount. Its much more robust and small.
I checked it but didn’t find the one for 15 promax
@@THEDPJOURNEY strange, i ordered 2 of them, for 15 pro max. They are available now.
wont stray light enter from the opening on the back?
Yup, I forgot to mention that part, I use black gaff tape to close the gap. Super easy 😉
This is really crafty. Great ideas - noted! Thank you for sharing, brother! Beautiful vid, as well - obviously. 😊
very informative, thanks for such useful content
Thank you so much 👍happy you liked it
Is there a next step to adding in a lens maybe like moment anamorphic or something but in a cheap rig way ? Plus the filters ?
These lenses are usually proprietary to the manufacturer, they would have proprietary amounts. So I don't think you'll find any DIY solution to add Lenses.
Wow - this is exactly what I was searching for. Your solution is so compact and useful! Great job. Thank you very much for this video.
Much appreciated, thanks for watching
I’m back looking to build more … 4:41 looking for a smaller (?) u shape USB C adapter. Thanks again …so appreciate your videos
Great set up but what about audio ? If i need to mic for an interview ?
Hollyland Lark M2 looks good to me. I already got myself one
Love the battery idea, think I'll combine it with the filter option. Fantastic video, subscribed.
Really glad I can help. welcome aboard
Amazing!! To say the least. Really good to know.
My pleasure
Such a great setup that I’ve not seen bettered after all this time! I would be interested to see how you taped up the overhangs to prevent light from entering and whether it’s good for the long term or if you now have any other ideas to shield it more permanently?
Honestly tape works so good that I didn’t consider any permanent solution. A friend of mine suggested a 3D printed solution, but again that would make it less compatible and modular
@@THEDPJOURNEY Ok, thanks for the reply. I’m really looking forward to your next video and hopefully will see exactly how you’ve done it there.
Thanks for making this!
My absolute pleasure
this is insane. thank you for sharing. really really really really really great video!!!!
Thank you so much for your kind support. Glad you liked it. Please share if you can
Thanks again
The ND filter DIY rig is genius!. I can use the quality ND filters I have on my phone now :)
Absolutely genius
Cheers thanks
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind support
You're a genius, bro!
I appreciate that!
Great video! Please keep uploading, I've been following you since early on and have always enjoyed your work.
I did a quick one about the app and Nano II, but you have a much larger audience that would probably appreciate the content.
what about using an ND filter with 77mm dimension?
It works also, but I always buy an 82 to make sure it fits all my lenses where the biggest lens I have is an 82mm
A thinking man. Great solution!
Cheers thanks
Great job again my man, you come up with the goods! It's pretty much what I had in mind myself, utilising the MagSafe with that crucial drive but I was going crazy just trying to find a simple filter adapter already on the market. DIY is the solution and you nailed it! Thanks dude... can't see myself shelling out $$$ for anything unless it's a lightweight, modular cage that allows universal NOT proprietary filters
Really happy I can help. Yeah it took me a while to find that solution for the SSD
In one word: Brilliant!
Thanks 🙏 glad you enjoyed it
Did you make a video on why shooting on 422 is better than h265?
I did make a video comparing both
PS the only accessory that I can't find is the mag safe puck...the link doesnt take me to it
Glad you liked it, Happy to help. Thanks for watching
I had the same problem looking for a simple filter holder. This is really clever. 👍
Glad I can help. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Thx !
Does placing a filter in front of the iphone lenses affect the iPhone sound recording?
It would a bit yes. But you should not rely much on it anyway, I’d record externally or just use wireless mics for iPhone
Oh well. Awaiting your next episode!
Thanks for watching!
I did the same thing but the issue with that filter mount is the light leak from those opening on the sides. On certain situations you would even see reflection.
It happened with me a couple of times as well only with the wide lens, but I just added tape. Again it's cheaper than buying a whole new set of filters
Amazing idea! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thanks for watching
Amazing. Thanks for this. Question. Will there be any crazy vignetting on the widest lens?
Not at all, since that’s an 82mm filter there’s no way to see any of its edges. Not sure about other brands though with 67mm filters.
My absolute pleasure, glad I can help
great solution with the battery! How would you connect a cable mic to the iphone if the port is already used for the SSD?
Great video! I'd watched this when it first dropped as I had just bought the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but was not shooting enough video to worry about filters and external storage. Now, however, I find myself looking for a solution wherein I can mount a VND and a black pro mist filter and the Small Rig cage I was eyeing requires, as you note, proprietary magnetic filters. I was even hoping to use the Moment case I had picked up, but it seems there may not be a solution with Moment wherein I can use the Moment case, then mount only the BPM and VND.
Thanks for your comment, and yeah, I wasn’t a fan of how brands we’re trying to bring us into a new costly ecosystem
Best video for beginners. Do you have a yt shorts version ?
Thanks for the comment, no, I don’t have a short version for it
