I feel it does solve the problem with having to buy new accessories and filters. That's the Main Issue i have with them honestly. Thanks for the comment
Yeah also true. I tested one of these rigs with the 67mm thread and saw how stacking their kit filters will vignette on 13mm, amongst MANY other issues that could take a whole other video to cover Funny how no one talks about them: they don’t wanna piss off brands I guess
this is the type of video I am looking for. I do not like to be tied into their ecosystems. I want it to be flexible. I think I have finally found it from your video, Thank you!
@@THEDPJOURNEY agreed, I do not like to be overly expensive for mobile accessories and would rather pump that money into camera gears instead. And I already has all the 82mm VND filters, polariser, dark mist filters laying around.
Finally thank you! I always wanted a cheaper setup and saw the MagSafe lens attachment as a cheaper option but couldn’t conceptualize other cheaper parts that would make it more functional.
Great to hear, keep me posted then, would love to check them out since you guys seem to know the perfect combination of features to pack in such a small handle. Feel free to share my video
Another brilliant video, packed with so much valuable information-it’s definitely worth watching two or three times. I highly encourage everyone I meet to subscribe to this channel!
Thank you, again, for this advice. I appreciate your stance on *buying the equipment independently, testing, and reporting out on those tests I modeled my iPhone rig after your first example, and was glad to use my own filters instead of mediocre filters from a hardware manufacturer. Intrigued about how to leverage MagSafe for more modularity.
Yeah it took me a while to find a good combo honestly. I honestly had concerns about MagSafe, but then realized it's stronger than I expected. It's always good to be cautious if you add a heavy Filter or stack a bunch on top of each other. Thanks again for your support.
I watched your last video and 3d printed the parts based on your design and it worked great I just found there was a ton of light leaks coming through front screen of the phone so everytime i used it i had to tape the front to prevent it. I’m so HAPPY you released another solution! I’ll definitely be trying this rig out now.
Really glad you tried the first one, and yeah this one is more focusing in Magdafe solution for speed of setup basically. Hope you also like this one once you try it. Thanks again
Awesome Video, thanks a lot putting together and showing a budget friendly Smartphone Rig. I was always under the impression that iPhone Rigs are can be expensive but happy that I am wrong. Now I am more eager to buy both filter mount and the articulated handle.
Yeah I believe this would be a great start before you consider investing in any other more expensive rig. You might end up never buying one anyway after this. Glad I can help
Great setup and video! I'm on my own quest for the holy grail of iPhone rigs and it seems that the market is still evolving for more compact and versatile accessories. Your combo might be the closest option to my current needs 🙂
Thank you so much for the comment, yes, the market is still evolving, and every brand wants to have their own cash grab from their proprietary ecosystem, hopefully with my video and a lot of other filmmakers’ DIY solutions, who got frustrated from their lack of care about what we really need, brands will come back to their senses and start creating rigs that are Following the standards other than their own
Yes, the magsafe filter mount is awesome. It is so flat that it even fits behind a phoneclamp. I should've listened to you and by 82 mm filters. I got 77mm and on the wide angle lens of the phone, it shows up on one edge. Thanks for your minimalistic set ups! They're great and excellent for travelling and low budget!
I saw it, but it has 3 problems: 1-it takes the place of the MagSafe that I need for the handle. 2- it doesn’t have a a MagSafe magnet on the exposed side if I need to mount the handle maybe . 3-it doesn’t have a built in battery, so it’ll need power still through external battery, forcing me to go back to my top handle setup+battery With that said, it didn’t solve much for me
Small rig sent me their rig actually, found many massive flaws in it that I couldn’t review it. One of the reasons why I thought of this one. Thanks again for your support
Excellent, excellent video: Content, presentation, explanations, thought through details and viewing time - Bravo, Bravo-! I will check if this rig works for my IPhone 13 Pro Max, if so I will build this fantastic rig for the very reasons you mention it’s perfect for me, many thanks for sharing your experience with us! Looking forward to your upcoming Videos. A simple man. Zack🙋🏼
Thank you so much Zack for your super kind comment and compliments, really happy you find this setup good for you. Let me know how it goes once you check it on you iPhone 13
This setup doesn't work if you have a 16 pro max. According to reviews. FYI. The increases size cause light leakage. But I happen to have the exact case you have with my 16 pro max. Lol. This setup looks amazeballs. Gonna get 3-4 of the parts next week to start. Very good video.
I feel you, but if you already have a bunch of them, it's what makes sense. Which filter sizes do you have, was always curious what others have or invested in
It great! The only thing that was missing for me was the ability to connect a 2x lens for iPhones, I think the 2x on the phone crops too much of the sensor and brings out a lot of noise. If you have a solution on how to adapt it withinthis setup it would be amazing
Excellent video as always. Seriously appreciate your production value/presentation. In theory, could one put a strong enough magsafe ring on the back of the magsafe tripod, then attach a magsafe hub on the back of it? (I realize you'd be stacking 3 magsafe adapters at that point, so the weight distribution, compatibility, and safety concerns may arise there, just a thought!)
First, thank you so much for the kind words, about the MagSafe stacking, I think it should be fine because the weight is not added to the phone side, but to the other side basically. But my only concern is how it might interfere with the field of view of the 13 mm lens, unless it’s a very flat USB-C hub.
@@THEDPJOURNEY Right. My concern was the filter compatibility too. But more so the overall fit; I don't think I'd be using the wide lens in most cases when configuring the ssd and mic on the phone itself. Not a fan of the wide anyway. So I see the value in attempting this build without the handle solution. I may go this route. Give it a try sometime!
You should add the Hagibis SSD instead then you don’t need the hub. The Hagibis SSD has three USB-C ports, one for mic, one for power and one for the host phone. You should also add USB-C L adapters for the Mic and SSD if you want to stick with this setup so they don’t stick out but are flush with the battery. :)
I already checked those out, and someone else already commented and recommended those. In a nutshell, they won’t work because you still need to add a battery to it and it will prevent you from using the MagSafe handle as well. Also keep in mind. This would eventually stick out once you start adding cables and Mike receiver, which could end up interfering with the field of view of the 13mm lens.
i love the setup! personally i go for neewer case (not cage) cause it can fit any 67mm filters even stacked them + the new lexar go hub ssd, cause it just work, no hassle of try and error, and also the case also have magsafe, i can use any magsafe accessories
First - quite a good set-up & video - thanks for sharing - I've sent this to a number of photography friends. I also use a MagSafe tripod adapter and I have 77mm filters (transitioning from the 62mm filters I bought when Moment first came out with filter attachments for the iPhone long ago) and I was like how the heck are you fitting 82mm filters and not run into issues with the MagSafe ring area given how close MagSafe is to the lenses - and that filter adapter cleverly has it's exterior MagSafe area further away - that's great. I will say I'm disappointed in that the producers of rigs and cases with 67mm filter adapters haven't better aligned the ring to be closer to the telephoto and further away from the ultra wide - there is almost no situation in which the filter doesn't vignettes or block part of the ultra wide frame. I definitely like not being locked into any proprietary system of the cage producers - plus many of them take a long time to release updated cages for the new models. That said, I went with Neewer's iPhone 16 Pro cage - they have back plates for 17mm lenses, t-mount and m-mount lenses. I'm hoping they release a 37mm backplate like they did for the 15 pro cage so I can use my beastgrip lenses. But at the very least, with 17mm lens thread, you can use a wide variety of lenses without being locked in. I've also ordered Moment's supercage for flexibility in accessories and mounting microphones, batteries and drives. I just hope they release a different attachment point than the clamp - like an Arca Swiss quick release plate since I prefer my compact neewer cage for attaching lenses and filters securely. Anyway, thanks for the clever ideas.
Glad you liked it, appreciate the support! Glad you are enjoying the flexibility and being able to avoid the proprietary systems of the case makers. In the end you still end up struggling to Frankenstein solutions here and there, and I can see how brands end up fighting for the dominance with proprietary lenses as well instead of sitting together and agreeing on having one specific amount that fits all their lenses and compete in the quality realm We all understand why they do that, but again that only works against filmmakers I also find the Neewer cage pretty good so far if you need to add custom lenses, I’m planning to test their lenses hopefully soon and will probably talk about them if I find them good Enough.
@ I don’t own any Neewer lenses. I’ve focused on Beastgrip as I understood they’re the best quality but very heavy and requiring a 37mm thread which isn’t widely supported. I’m also curious about Reeflex because I understand they’re also very high quality. Lot of the other manufacturers tend to have lenses with chromatic aberrations and smearing at the edges. I’m moving away from Moment lenses unfortunately because they seem to distract themselves with fashion accessories rather than lenses for mobile and they have the proprietary mounting system.
I don’t have the pro, but I assume it should because of the flexibility of the neck that extends and retract. Honestly, there’s only one way to find out, but I don’t have the phone so I can’t really promise you.
I spoke to my friend who works at Apple about the new iPhone 16 Pro and its worse 13mm lens. He says this is a recurring problem with newly released iPhones and they get fixed with firmware updates. Have you noticed any improvements since your last video?
I didn’t say that, I just didn’t test it with the 13 so I can’t claim it is without testing. But I believe the flexibility of this neck that extends and contracts could make it compatible with 13 as well.
Could this tripod be compatible wiht S24 ultra with magsafe case? I know the 16 pro max and 15 pro max are almost the same size of the s24 ultra, but dont know if magnet sits as low or high as the iphone ones. Really like the idea for my samsung
I’m honestly not sure because I don’t have that phone, but if you say it has a MagSafe option, then it should work, there’s only one way to find out though
Great video. Question, i have 58mm ND filters...Is it possible to use these 58mm ND filters on the 67mm filter mount? Or can you suggest an alternative filter mount case to suit? Also, what case would you recommend for the iphone 15 pro max? Sorry, a newbie smartphone film maker. Thanks
I wouldnt recommend 58mm at all, it'll cause vignetting in the 24 and 13mm for sure. I gotta check which cases for iPhone 15 ProMax. Will try and update the list
Please can you tell us the name of the MagSafe filter holder as in Europe they don’t link you to the site as you did in the description it takes you somewhere else. We just need to know the name of the MagSafe filter holder.
Any issues with the SSD working with the iPhone 15 pro max? I’ve tried numerous NVME SSD enclosures with 2230 Western Digital SSD and none of them work. The only thing I have gotten to work with the 15 Pro Max is the Samsung T7 drive. It’s a bulky setup with the clamp to hold it on
Really? Strange, this one worked fine with both my 15-16 Pro Max. Not sure why the others didnt work with you. Any specific message you got from them? And yeah the T7 is massive compared to this.
I personally haven't experienced that, but possibly in hot weather locations I can see how it could get hot. it did happen to me in Dubai before. I'd just keep a cooler box and wrap in a cold towel in that box every once in a while, that was my solution. The phone is too small to stick more stuff to it like a fan, which defies the whole purpose of being small you know. Thanks again for your comment
Eh, it's somewhat obvious that this person doesn't really use their iPhone for film, that or its intention that they used specific brands to make their DIY solution "seem" better. for those trying to using the more recent iPhone, go with Beastgrip's Beast cage series. Another thing is using the entire C - Port for one accessory lol, little things like that say a lot.
Oh wow, you cracked my code!! Sorry to disappoint you, In fact I did use my phone for creating content for major fashion brands, that’s my real business as a DP, you can check my website or IG account to learn more before getting judgmental The massive rise of social media content, brands now ask a lot to shoot things with phones for that “phone unpolished look” to upload on their social media. That’s why I focused recently on iPhone setups, simply cuz that’s what I use for work. Hope that clarifies where I got that solution from.
@THEDPJOURNEY I'm not being judgemental. Just thought it was weird advice knowing there's some very good non-prepriotry cages out there and you used the obvious over-priced ones as examples. That's all.
I never said “all” branded rigs do the same, but all of them have some level or proprietary accessories without giving you much options to use your existing ones. I already have the neewer cage (if that’s one of the ones you’re referring to) and I’m planning to test their lenses to justify why you’d need them. And again… if money is not an issue for you, then some of these branded rigs could be a good choice for you, specifically the ones that let you use your filters at least
I think you're the reason I didn't buy a phone for blackfriday yet. Watching all these videos, till I arrived on your page and found the right setup. Thanks a lot for an affordable yet effective option! Could you help me out with an opinion? iPhone 15Pro vs S24Ultra for photography and videography but also in low light setting? There are apps to shoot log for samsung too, and a lot of people say it has better specs too, plus I like the pen. And if I'm not wrong, u can fix the stabilization with a gimble. I just want to know which phone is better, without recommendation from people who are sponsored by iPhone. Which budget camera would you recommend for videography and fotography, also in low light conditions. I want to start filming, also ads and cinematic scenes. I saw options From 500-1000€( like full frame cameras or SonyZV-E10, Sony Alfa6400 & Fujifilm X-T5/X-S10 gehört, Canon Rs, BlackMagic). But you also need lenses. Do you have a recommendation, I feel like you're the best to ask about this. I have a Sony Alfa 68 but it's from 2015 and I think its too old and outdated? Sensor: ASP-C Exmor CMOS, 24.2 megapixels, 79 focus points, 8 frames per second, ISO-Range: 25,600, Full HD1080p, 60fps, A-Mount for Lenses. I asked chatgpt and it said 15Pro is overall better than the Alfa68. 😂 What do you think? Thanks a lot, I'm excited for more videos !
thank you so much for the kind words and I'm happy you find my content informative and helpful I never used the S24 honestly, so i can't offer any advice on that. As for cameras, for that low budget, I also wouldnt bve able to recommend much other than I know for sure the GH7 woudl be the perfect camera that would take you from beginner all the way to Pro honestly. You won't need to upgrade it for at least another 5+ years I'd say. I know it's beyond your budget, but again, I'm not super familiar with a lower budget that can be a good entry level. Here's the link for the GH7 is you're interested: geni.us/DPJGH7 Thanks again for your support and hope my answer helped in some way

I also find the Neewer cage pretty good so far if you need to add custom lenses, I’m planning to test their lenses hopefully soon and will probably talk about them if I find them good Enough.
Great video. Sub earned!
I appreciate the support! Welcome aboard
will this filter mount work with iphone 15 Pro? or just the MAX
not sure, I assume it would. Can't promise though
Not sure if you mentioned it. Will this setup work on the regular iPhone 16 pro?
I don’t have the pro, but I assume it should because of the flexibility of the neck that extends and retract. Honestly, there’s only one way to find out, but I don’t have the phone so I can’t really promise you.
I spoke to my friend who works at Apple about the new iPhone 16 Pro and its worse 13mm lens. He says this is a recurring problem with newly released iPhones and they get fixed with firmware updates. Have you noticed any improvements since your last video?
I have t tested it under the microscope again since. Maybe I’ll try and see. Will update if I find anything
Why would this not work with the 13 pro?
I didn’t say that, I just didn’t test it with the 13 so I can’t claim it is without testing. But I believe the flexibility of this neck that extends and contracts could make it compatible with 13 as well.
@THEDPJOURNEY thanks. I'm going to look into it.
Hi do you have the idea to adapt t mount and 17mm mount with this set up?
Havent tried honestly, I assume you'll need a dedicated phone case for that
Great video.
Where in Europe are you? Might find you the perfect link fornit
This felt like a very repetitive video; will definitely check out the parts though!
Any of these work with iPhone 11 Pro ??
iPhone 11 doesn’t have MagSafe, so it won’t work without a MagSafe ring
How do we direct the footage to the external SSD versus the internal phone storage ?
I us the Blackmagic app, there’s a “Media” menu in the settings that lets you do that
Any issues with the SSD working with the iPhone 15 pro max? I’ve tried numerous NVME SSD enclosures with 2230 Western Digital SSD and none of them work. The only thing I have gotten to work with the 15 Pro Max is the Samsung T7 drive. It’s a bulky setup with the clamp to hold it on
Really? Strange, this one worked fine with both my 15-16 Pro Max. Not sure why the others didnt work with you. Any specific message you got from them? And yeah the T7 is massive compared to this.
Brilliant
Cheers 👍
is there a way to place my 77mm nisi VND 1-5stop Try colour filter was trying to find jjc 77mm i have setup rings aswell
You can use a 67-77 step-up ring for that
What is the name of this contraption?
Didn't think of a name for it yet, any suggestions?
You’re missing a phone cooler. Try filming outdoors in the summer it will dim and overheat.
I jb welded a fan to my setup. I live in Texas. It’s always hot . lol
Oh wow! Does it get that hot?? 🔥
Thank God it’s more balanced here in NY.
It’s 90 degrees most of the year.
Oh wow! Been there once for a shoot but it was nice weather. Again, I used a cold wet towel to cool my phone off in Dubai
👏👏👏
🙌
Hi Links are not working
Starnge, I tested them now and they're all working
Eh, it's somewhat obvious that this person doesn't really use their iPhone for film, that or its intention that they used specific brands to make their DIY solution "seem" better. for those trying to using the more recent iPhone, go with Beastgrip's Beast cage series. Another thing is using the entire C - Port for one accessory lol, little things like that say a lot.
Oh wow, you cracked my code!!
Sorry to disappoint you, In fact I did use my phone for creating content for major fashion brands, that’s my real business as a DP, you can check my website or IG account to learn more before getting judgmental
The massive rise of social media content, brands now ask a lot to shoot things with phones for that “phone unpolished look” to upload on their social media.
I saw options
From 500-1000€( like full frame cameras or SonyZV-E10, Sony Alfa6400 & Fujifilm X-T5/X-S10 gehört, Canon Rs, BlackMagic).
Thanks a lot, I'm excited for more videos !
thank you so much for the kind words and I'm happy you find my content informative and helpful
I never used the S24 honestly, so i can't offer any advice on that.
Here's the link for the GH7 is you're interested: geni.us/DPJGH7
Thanks again for your support and hope my answer helped in some way
