You are right on. I built a very similar rig with the small rig cage with existing components. USB C hub with a battery pack is really what makes the magic happens. I use a different brand SSD (Crucial X10 4Tb) and Mic - but you can also have an audio interface plugged in for studio work and also you can use a USB C to HDMI or use AirCast to an Apple TV box for large screen display. Finally! And thank you! I’ve been asking this to so many Apple sales geniuses, and tech guys, bought mountains of expensive accessories that didn’t work, etc. and this was everything I’ve needed to know.
I see a lot of people screaming Pocket 3, but this is about appearances. People equate a lot of gear to someone who knows what they’re doing. It looks fierce. The OP3 gets great footage, no doubt, but it looks like a dermatologist’s tool. Or something 007 would carry. This is awesome and screams professional. They both have their merits, but for a gear head, while it’s a lot to piece together, this is a solid solution. Came looking for a sound way to use the Lark M2 and an SSD simultaneously. The battery pack was a total bonus.
I know we all like to talk crap about technology, but it really is amazing how far things have come! I remember not that long ago just being blown away by having a camera - any camera - in my pocket at all times, on a tiny slate that I use for all my general communication. Now people are arguing because the Apple event was shot on an iPhone but they "still had to have professional rigging!" - it's just amazing that it's even capable of all this stuff! I'm looking at videos people are shooting on their iPhone 15 Pros and you can shoot some super legit stuff with this thing, It's crazy! Of course there are limitations when compared to actual pro level camera gear, but again, the best camera is the one you have on you!
100%! I’ve been saying the same thing. You can’t just take a Red Camera and you instantly get an amazing shot. You need everything in production to make it good. That’s exactly what Apple did. The fact that a phone can shoot just as good is so amazing. Thanks for watching the video and for stopping by. I appreciate you taking the time today to watch and comment. Means a lot to me.
The biggest thing that makes an Apple presentation shot on an iPhone is not the rigging necessarily, but the lighting and pre-production planning. As for the iPhone vs. DSLR, the advantages are you always have the phone with you, it's always (hopefully) charged, and you can, for very little extra money, put together an extremely minimalist rig you can keep in your car. I'm doing a lot of outdoors stuff, and you never know where you might end up with the opportunity to capture something unique.
I’m not at all a person that would need to record anything, but a rig like that would definitely make me want to recording an event or something for RUclips
this was a great set up and a very candid ending which I really appreciate. I find in my videos when I’m using my iPhone it’s for the exact opposite reason of having it hooked up to a giant immobile and conspicuous rig… and I often wonder how many people filming raw are using an iPhone. and if they are, the only reason I can imagine is to be inconspicuous. Lol. Nevertheless this is the best breakdown I’ve seen on creating a functioning rig, and I appreciate the time and effort you went into
The only thing I see missing or that I recommend is a LED panel light, one of the powered by NPF battery versions. By the time you go this big, it is kind of par for the course at this point and nothing will make your video quality indoors or against the sun look better than that light. I would rather have descent lighting with an iPhone 8 than bad lighting with an iPhone 15.
Thanks for this really informative video! I was searching for ways to attach more than 1 accessory to my iphone 15 pro and you answered that. And the iphone to SSD to macbook workflow helped too.
If you already have an actual high end camera this may not seem practical. If you already have this phone but don’t have a desire to go get a dedicated camera that can only take pictures or videos then this isn’t bad.
Help! The anker battery pack @ 9:00 minutes is too small for the stretch mount on mine. I have the same exact ones. Is there something I should be doing to shorten the clamp on them so that they grip the battery pack?
Don't be negative! We, Humans, are creators!!! This set up works depending on your need? For those shooting themselves in a car? The accessories can be off to the side while the iPhone is mounted to the dash. Your idea to plug in just the SSD would work in a car... I did a test using the iPhone 15 Pro as a Dash Cam in LOG driving into the afternoon sun. It wasn't terrible footage but it gave me knowledge and experience! We shouldn't believe the setup is ugly when it's functional for your needs! Kind of funny, that many forget about the Blackmagic Pocket 6K? You could purchase a cage to mount external storage, connect a battery, Mic or audio mixer, etc. This set up is similar but for the iPhone 15 Pro... Not overkill. IMHO: 4K60 is overkill unless you're shooting action. 30fps & 24fps for dialogue. But, testing is key before getting the shot and editing for the final look.
Good job. Meanwhile, I've been working on a no-cage version. USB cable to hub in a small sling pack. Attached to hub is audio, battery, and SSD but phone is simply tethered to a cable. It's light and free. However, stability of recording through the cable can be a problem. It works most of the time, so now I'm trying to get it completely dialed in. Otherwise I'm ditching the whole idea and going to use a Sony 6700 or FX30.
I am curious why you just used the storage in phone rather than plugging in the longer cable with drive in pocket. Don’t need to worry about space on phone and one less transfer for the files. Is having the cable that annoying?
Thx a ton, that's exactly what I needed. Tried to build it up myself, but everytime there was one component missing or I didn't know how to mount it to the rig. Good job!
Thank you for this. I shoot wedding videos with my iPhone and DJI 4 but battery power to shoot the whole day has been a challenge and now with the ability to shoot to an external SSD is a game changer for me. So I have been looking for ways to get set up exactly like this as using my gimbal now no longer seem like a viable option..
Hi, I bought everything you listed in this video, but when I attached the battery to Belkin and thus the iPhone...I get an notice on my iPhone saying when filming...Cannot use accessory, Accessory Uses too much power. I checked which accessory it was, just to make sure I had the right one. How do I make that Apple notice not show up and have it charge the iPhone? should I only connect it when the phone has no power? thanks
You know what, you may call it a monstrosity, but I think for someone like myself (who has to travel and cover events, while doing photography too), it might just make life that little bit easier. The iPhone 15 Pro is amazing, but having the ability to attach mics for talking head interviews, film to SSD etc, I think it is a bit of a game changer. Thanks for the informative video. Thumbs up from me. 🙂
I was just playing devil’s advocate calling it a monstrosity because I knew someone would. I personally think it’s awesome. 😂 Glad you feel the same way. Appreciate you! Thanks for dropping in.
In the end, the reason is, you gotta have a phone. In some respects, the phone is "free." It's not a seperate device you are buying. If you buy a mirrorless, you are still going to need a bunch of accessories so the price point is still lower.
Thanks for doing such a sound detailed video of this set up for mobile filmmaking. It’s helped me a lot with finalising my set up now which is great. Thankfully I have bought most of the same kit and I’m pleased to see you have made a very aesthetically pleasing set up that just works. Will be subbing to your channel in the hope you continue to make more videos on mobile filmmaking with the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max as it will help me a lot.
@@rogerseng ahhh, got a query/issue since setting it all up. When I have plugged in the Anker battery pack to the USB C hub and the Samsung T7 Touch to the same hub I keep getting the message “Cannot use accessory. This accessory uses too much power” I don’t understand as I have the same hub, same SSD (except it’s the touch version with the finger print), the same Anker charge but it’s a newer version. I bought this gear as my solid mobile filmmaking rig but it’s now got an issue. Any solutions with what to do?
Hi Roger, I bought the entire SmallRig frame with handles and noticed that the BT Record button only works with the native app and not with the Final Cut Camera App on iPhone 15 Pro Max. A note to also warn enthusiasts.
This is a set up that will attract a lot if attention. I am wondering if there can be a more minimalist set up where you can record to an external ssd and add a microphone. Btw you can use a 2230 nvme with an enclosure and the ssd gets a tiny footprint.
They should have put that center support for the phone clamp on a horizontal track so it could move left and right within the cage. You're right, you probably don't want to make those buttons hard to access. Also, if you have a hardcore gimbal that supports the decked-out cage, then... might also want to position the phone better to help balance it. These makers really need to hire some top-tier industrial designers.
I would love this rig to be less bulky, just more compact. I’m trying to think of a way to pack all this more compact and not everything on the top. That would be amazing, so you can mount it on a stabilizer!
Excellent, Roger! Appreciate your comprehensive research and insights. I've been seeking a configuration that enables me to dynamically add or subtract items based on production requirements. There are instances where I'd like to incorporate an iRig Pre 2 to facilitate sound monitoring, volume control, and provide a 48 V XLR input with input volume control. Additionally, there are times when I might opt to include a TASCAM DR-60DmkII DSLR Audio Recorder, featuring four sound inputs. Thanks again!
unfortunately there is not even ONE review about this cage and the Smallrig version that talks about the 1/4 threads in the back, at least the distance between them to see if we can attach an ARRI magic arm
Nice set up and great video... Let me ask you, all that, why not just grab a DJI Pocket 3 in your pocket and make it much more practical and much easier to travel with and set up?
HELP! I've followed your advice and invested in most of the equipment you mentioned in this video - some of the clamps/mounts weren't available in the UK, so found difference ones. When I'm filming using either the Blackmagic Camera app or the standard iOS Camera app, I'm getting all kinds of strange 'glitches' in the footage. These are usually small green/black blocks. Has anybody else experienced this? The whole USB-C hub/cable setup is rated at 10GB/sec, I'm also using a Samsung T7 SSD which is also rated at 1050mb/sec write speed. The SSD is correctly formatted in APFS. The only thing I don't have is the external battery bank. Hopefully someone can relate to this issue 🙏
Love the setup but I wonder how long it would take the iPhone to overheat in 4K 60fps. You should do a follow up video on that 😉 I may or may not, I really wonder. Apple probably shot the event on a dozen of these so no issue for them of course.
Excellent presentation. I think to really call it a "Cinema" rig you at least have to have the ability to add in, at the minimum, some kind of variable neutral density filter so that you can keep your shutter speed at a cinematic value (180 degree rule) and possibly if you're really gung ho an anamorphic lens attachment as well - that said you've built an impressive set up!
HELP! I finally built the same today but my iPhone 15 Pro says cannot use the accessory because of too much power. I tried to disconnect the powerbank and the problem still exist so i assume it’s the hub?
Sorry man that’s so weird! I just used mine last night and it worked. I’m sure you’ve already tried this but try putting the one that feeds from the power bank into each port to see if it works. Also I had to manually press the power button on the power bank to turn it on too.
Just received all the parts and assembled them. The only problem I ran into was that the Anker power supply/battery is a bit too small to fit in the holder/clamp. It's very loose. I added a bit of cardboard on either side of the battery but it's still not very tight. In fact the cable between it and the USB-C hub keeps pushing it out of place.
BRAVO!!!! This is a very technical and informative video. No it’s the best that I’ve seen. Love the rig. I have subscribe to this channel. I love the lefty, Lucy and the righty tidy for the morons. Excellent video! Excellent channel!
Hi Roger, Thanks for the video which inspired me to purchase the components for the same camera set. There is only one problem for me: the Belkin hub does not transfer the power from the power bank to the smartphone (iPhone 15 Pro). What could be the reason? Did I get a defective hub? All components are virtually identical to yours, the connections are all correct. Do you have an idea where the error could be? I'm guessing it's a defective hub... Greetings from France
Hey thanks for your support! The only thing I can think of is that one of the ports are specific for power. The port on the far left (or right) is for Power Delivery. You’re going to want to make sure that you’re plugging in the power into that port.
Hello Roger, thank you for your reply! The cable is of course connected to the correct port of the hub, but via USB-C to USB-A on the power bank (Anker). The cable itself works, the powerbank charges the iPhone without any problems. So: defective hub or any incompatibility??
I loved the rig you built! In fact, I built one exactly like it. Problem is the phone will not charge through this USB’s hub. How did you get it to charge the phone from the external power instead of it trying to charge the external power supply from the phone? Thanks!
Hi Roger, thanks for sharing such espectacular SmallRig set up. On that same set up, how can I add an external 7” monitor? Thanks in advance for your help! 🙌🏻
How do you get the Belkin to charge? --- I bought that same Belkin hub, the iPhone recognizes all the devices connected to it... however I can't get the iPhone to charge its battery... it does charge Other phones that are not iPhone.
I am looking for the answer all day and didn’t find anything helpful yet. At least you can charge the phone with MagSafe and connect a mic or SSD. I am looking for a solution to connect a mic and a ssd for my 14 pro. Maybe you found something and help me out?
Could I use this same rig for recording youtube videos from my home desk? If so, what changes should I make for that? I'd like to use this when out and also at home.
thanks. thanks for your video, i'm buying all what's needed through you affiliate links except the SSD and the powerbank because I have them already. @@rogerseng
I actually got it to work if I plug the HDMI to USB-C cable directly into the iPhone. But it won't work going into the USB-C splitter which means I loose connection to my other devices like the mic
thanks for the video. please send us a video where you show us that with belkin the iphone is recharged using the ssd and mic. I wrote to Belkin support and they say it can't work... I bought this device after seeing your video and I'm sorry...
Thanks for the informative and fun video. I have a few of these things already! Can you share the name or link of the octopus tripod you used in there? Thank you.
This is just about perfect! Would love it if you could potentially add an external monitor? I have been researching, and I think the 2 leading candidates for mobile, external monitors would be either the Atomos Ninja V (and then you could connect the SSD to that as its also a recorder) or an iPad using Orion Video System (I haven't tested this yet). On a tripod at home, you can airplay to an Apple TV, which also works well. I would picture the atomos screen facing the same direction as the cameras, parallel to that plane. Basically, like adding a screen to the back of your phone that shows what you are filming. The issue with the tripod, is that using Blackmagic Camera app, you can't see what you are recording. You could use Apple Watch if using the native camera, but then you miss out on a lot. To really go over the top, add a tentacle sync e and a tilta nucleus nano. :)
@@tobydalsgaard3506 If you mean the phone's screen, well it would point in the opposite direction of the screen. So you could see what the camera has in frame. In other words, when using the main camera, when it is recording you, you cannot see what it is recording. The solution is to add some sort of monitor. The Atomos is just a pretty popular monitor but I think any other monitor would work as well. I would set up the camera on a tripod, maybe to capture a wide shot for a podcast, but sitting on the couch or desk, you wouldn't be able to see what you were recording. You can also use the Atomos as the recorder, which means you don't have to have 2 usb-c ports occupied on the hub.
@@MaximoJoshua Atomos does not use USB C but HDMI. The solution would be to get a USB C hub with HDMI output. But then you can just simply put up a monitor there to see your framing.
I’m working on a system as we speak. I have currently bought the last remaining items in this rig set up and I have bought a field monitor and ordered a 2.1 HDMI cable after doing a load of research on the topic. I haven’t had a chance to set up the field monitor yet but will let you know in the next couple of weeks once I’ve tried it. I’ve got a different hub for that option.
the only issue i have with this is when recording in 4k ProRes HQ Log frames drop wether its 1min or 8min eventually it will stop recording when it detects dropped frames I've tried everything I know and haven't seen any info on this issue yet.

Nearly perfect - I would add also an anamorphic/tele/wide lense + ND-Filter.
Did you get one yet? ND that is
?
I’m not at all a person that would need to record anything, but a rig like that would definitely make me want to recording an event or something for RUclips
this was a great set up and a very candid ending which I really appreciate.
I find in my videos when I’m using my iPhone it’s for the exact opposite reason of having it hooked up to a giant immobile and conspicuous rig… and I often wonder how many people filming raw are using an iPhone. and if they are, the only reason I can imagine is to be inconspicuous. Lol.
Nevertheless this is the best breakdown I’ve seen on creating a functioning rig, and I appreciate the time and effort you went into
Thanks for the rig info!
Great to see you excited about using the iPhone for filming more and more!
Greetings from Tokyo!🇯🇵
The only thing I see missing or that I recommend is a LED panel light, one of the powered by NPF battery versions. By the time you go this big, it is kind of par for the course at this point and nothing will make your video quality indoors or against the sun look better than that light. I would rather have descent lighting with an iPhone 8 than bad lighting with an iPhone 15.
You could use the threads on top of your handlebars to mount.
Nice ! thanks !
Thanks for this really informative video! I was searching for ways to attach more than 1 accessory to my iphone 15 pro and you answered that. And the iphone to SSD to macbook workflow helped too.
Dude, one of the best tutorials out there! Thanks for the video! So much useful information u mentioned!
You solved every question I had about my rig setup. And I have most of the pieces from other endeavors. Thanks for a great and helpful video!
So good! Appreciate you man. Thank you! 🤙🏽
Brilliant and yes "because we can" 👍
Roger I just got the same set up!!!!! Have to put it together. Ty for such a great vid
Right on
If you already have an actual high end camera this may not seem practical.
Great video, just what I needed for my upcoming shoot.
Good job!
FINALLY FOUND THE PERFECT VIDEO
This setup is just the same as buying an old project car. Not practical, but it is very fun to have.
Exactly. And it just transforms the more you modify it. So fun.
To be honest, love your build
How do I make that Apple notice not show up and have it charge the iPhone? should I only connect it when the phone has no power? thanks
Oh man I’m so sorry to hear man. I’m not sure honestly. I plug the battery into the PD port on the Belkin and it works from there from my end.
Super kind of you my friend. Thank you so much! Hope to bring you more value along this journey. Appreciate you being here.
Curious to learn how the phone performs connected to all that stuff outside in the summer.
This is a set up that will attract a lot if attention. I am wondering if there can be a more minimalist set up where you can record to an external ssd and add a microphone. Btw you can use a 2230 nvme with an enclosure and the ssd gets a tiny footprint.
Thank you for posting 📫 this video 📹. You have a new subscriber 🎉. Keep up the great 👍 work 🎉.
Roger, I used your links and when it all arrives, I'll have a rig just like yours. Thanks!!!
They should have put that center support for the phone clamp on a horizontal track so it could move left and right within the cage. You're right, you probably don't want to make those buttons hard to access. Also, if you have a hardcore gimbal that supports the decked-out cage, then... might also want to position the phone better to help balance it. These makers really need to hire some top-tier industrial designers.
amazing! looks soo much fun to build this. I wonder if you could fit a small adjustable monitor to make more angled shots.
For sure. Thanks so much. That’s on my list of things to check out next.
This is such a helpful video! I bought all the equipment recommended!
I would love this rig to be less bulky, just more compact. I’m trying to think of a way to pack all this more compact and not everything on the top. That would be amazing, so you can mount it on a stabilizer!
same question.
Roger, thank you for the video. I love the approach. Can you tell me where you got the two phone holders?
Thank you so much! Appreciate you dropping in. Yes I have them in the description but I’ll include them here as well.
geni.us/uecF
unfortunately there is not even ONE review about this cage and the Smallrig version that talks about the 1/4 threads in the back, at least the distance between them to see if we can attach an ARRI magic arm
Terrific Job Roger! Great content and a new subscriber for you :)
Nice set up and great video... Let me ask you, all that, why not just grab a DJI Pocket 3 in your pocket and make it much more practical and much easier to travel with and set up?
OMG YOU ARE AWESOME! TIME TO BUILD MY IPHONE RIG!
I have something similar set up. I’m also trying to add a Feelworld field camera on top 😍
Hopefully someone can relate to this issue 🙏
cool thanks man! I've been looking for a way to ditch all my heavy Canon stuff and this is definitely the solution - I can even attach my Atomos Ninja
Love the setup but I wonder how long it would take the iPhone to overheat in 4K 60fps. You should do a follow up video on that 😉 I may or may not, I really wonder. Apple probably shot the event on a dozen of these so no issue for them of course.
Especially in direct sunlight and with a case that protects the phone.
I ordered everything but the batt falls out of the holder.. the holder does not hold it good
I was wondering if those clamps work on the Samsung t7 shield I seen you hooked up the regular t7. Ty
But unfortunately I could not get signal for HDMI output from that USB-C Hub
Just what I've been looking for - adding great audio capture to a small footprint, anywhere iPhone podcast interview.
Nice video. But where's the external lenses? :)
Coming soon :)
Could I have this same rig on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, by simply having a USBc - Lightning adapter between the phone and the port?
I think that only iPhone 15 Pros work with external SSDs. I think.
Great Setup! Thanx for your video :-D
Glad you liked it!
HELP! I finally built the same today but my iPhone 15 Pro says cannot use the accessory because of too much power. I tried to disconnect the powerbank and the problem still exist so i assume it’s the hub?
Make sure that you have the power bank feeding into the port that says PD. Hope that helps!
@@rogerseng I did. like i said i also tried to disconnect the powerbank and i still have the same issue. :(
Sorry man that’s so weird! I just used mine last night and it worked. I’m sure you’ve already tried this but try putting the one that feeds from the power bank into each port to see if it works. Also I had to manually press the power button on the power bank to turn it on too.
I ordered a couple other items, do you get a commission on everything in my cart? This video helped me a lot!
Thanks so much man! Yes I do. Amazon affiliate links. Appreciate you supporting my channel!
Can you provide a new link for the SSD mount, the one below in the comments doesn't seem to be working. Thanks!
Same! I wonder if Anker changed their dimensions.
BRAVO!!!! This is a very technical and informative video. No it’s the best that I’ve seen. Love the rig. I have subscribe to this channel. I love the lefty, Lucy and the righty tidy for the morons. Excellent video! Excellent channel!
Excellent tutorial. I’d like to use audio monitoring headphones , so what’s the suggestion for that?
Hi Roger,
Thanks for the video which inspired me to purchase the components for the same camera set.
Thanks, you've helped me on my decision making
is the mic worth it for filming scenery with no commentary?
nice set up when I connect the external power, it knocks the external drive offline - this happen to you?
I loved the rig you built! In fact, I built one exactly like it. Problem is the phone will not charge through this USB’s hub. How did you get it to charge the phone from the external power instead of it trying to charge the external power supply from the phone? Thanks!
Hi Roger, thanks for sharing such espectacular SmallRig set up. On that same set up, how can I add an external 7” monitor? Thanks in advance for your help! 🙌🏻
Thanks for the video; subscribed!
If I can plug a external power bank I can also just plug in with a regular charger in the wall (for static purpose of course) ?
Hi Roger, quick question… is there a case or bag for this rig to travel with or get it out of bad weather in a hurry? Thanks so much.
How do you get the Belkin to charge? --- I bought that same Belkin hub, the iPhone recognizes all the devices connected to it... however I can't get the iPhone to charge its battery... it does charge Other phones that are not iPhone.
Hello, please, I have a question. Is it possible to mount this system with an iPhone 14 pro? Does the usb-c hub work with a lighting adapter?
I am looking for the answer all day and didn’t find anything helpful yet. At least you can charge the phone with MagSafe and connect a mic or SSD. I am looking for a solution to connect a mic and a ssd for my 14 pro. Maybe you found something and help me out?
Could I use this same rig for recording youtube videos from my home desk? If so, what changes should I make for that? I'd like to use this when out and also at home.
Do you have a link to tripod with suction cups
What's the used of that magnetic ring on top of the SSD?
I previously attached it so that I could use it as a MagSafe SSD.

thanks. thanks for your video, i'm buying all what's needed through you affiliate links except the SSD and the powerbank because I have them already.
@@rogerseng
The battery pack is to small for the bracket its loose unless i'm doing something wrong
Is there a way to hook up a transmitter to send wireless video to client monitor? I've been striking out with my Hollyland using HDMI
I actually got it to work if I plug the HDMI to USB-C cable directly into the iPhone. But it won't work going into the USB-C splitter which means I loose connection to my other devices like the mic
Can you post a link for the phone holders you use for the USB splitter? Thanks!
Absolutely. I use two of these. One for the power bank and one for the USB hub. geni.us/uecF
The external battery is unavailable is there another one you recommend
thanks for the video. please send us a video where you show us that with belkin the iphone is recharged using the ssd and mic. I wrote to Belkin support and they say it can't work... I bought this device after seeing your video and I'm sorry...
Thanks for the informative and fun video. I have a few of these things already! Can you share the name or link of the octopus tripod you used in there? Thank you.
Looks like the Anker power charger isn''t available. Is there an alternate with USB C support?
What do i need to purchase to be able to use exactly what you have but for a iPhone 14
Great stuff, Roger! Subbed!
Thanks brother! Can’t wait to get some Ramen soon.
This is just about perfect! Would love it if you could potentially add an external monitor? I have been researching, and I think the 2 leading candidates for mobile, external monitors would be
either the Atomos Ninja V (and then you could connect the SSD to that as its also a recorder) or an iPad using Orion Video System (I haven't tested this yet).
What would the Atomos do that the external drive and the 6.5" monitor on the camera would not do?
@@qiancharles yeah, i was thinking of a usb-c to hdmi cable (which the iphone supports)
the only issue i have with this is when recording in 4k ProRes HQ Log frames drop wether its 1min or 8min eventually it will stop recording when it detects dropped frames I've tried everything I know and haven't seen any info on this issue yet.
