i just bought one because of your video and i have to say its aaaaaaaaaawsome, one thing is sure when you arrive with the smallrig you look like a pro :-)))
After looking at the SmallRig universal I am going to choose the Brandon Li version. Having the SSD hidden in the handle is genius. Also the ease to snap the handles on and off is also an excellent feature. All around a well thought out film cage.
the handles are available separately without Brandon Li branding. i pledged for the moment supercage, canceled it and then got the non branded version of this cage, the non branded version of the handles, the power bank holder and the magnetic 67mm filter mount.
Note that if you use the MagSafe attachment in the cage in addition to the edge clamps, you CANNOT use the filter adapter because it's impossible to center that adapter over the lenses (at least, not with an iPhone 15 Pro Max or 16 Pro Max). You can see in this review video that the phone is not centered in the clamp, which means that the MagSafe is not engaged. BUT, if you don't use BOTH the MagSafe and edge clamps, the phone attachment is not secure and it wobbles badly-not good if you're trying to use this cage as a stabilizer. So, this product is only useful if you ignore the filter & its holder, but in that case SmallRig has less expensive versions available. Also, when the phone is in this cage, it is very difficult to access any of the phone's side buttons.
Your comment reads much like the lone review on the B&H website. Appreciate you mentioning this as maybe I’ll just stick to my Khronos until this issue with SMALLRIG is sorted. I’d like to have both, but not dropping a few hundred bucks for something that isn’t gonna work on possibly the most widely used phone currently in the world.
@@markhart8695 It's easy to see the problem at various places in the video, and it's particularly clear at 2:07 that the phone is not centered over the MagSafe area. Put your phone on a MagSafe charging disk and you'll easily see the difference. This is, to say the least, not good.

Nice video! Thanks! I’m having trouble connecting the s60 wireless mic to the SmallRig power hub you use in the video. The s60 works fine plugged into my iPhone 16 Pro directly but doesn’t work when connected through the hub. Any suggestions? TIA.
Doing a full rig on the iPhone defeats the whole purpose of a camera that's always with you and not obnoxious. This is what I need: 1. A Moment case with their new Quicklock filter system (love that the filters are unobtrusive and don't protrude like the round ones). But I need a VND+Cinebloom quicklock filter. And they need to make a cover or have covers for their filters like Polar Pro does, so you can just leave them on without having to worry about scratches, etc if put in your pocket or bag, etc. 2. And I need a Polar Pro Grip that locks onto the moment case somehow. But the grip should have either external storage or extra battery built into it and plug into the USBC. This is the ideal setup for a good camera/videocamera that's always with you and still unobtrusive and not "rigged" out unnecessarily. So annoying that no one has checked the boxes yet.
Thanks so much for the clarification w/ the SSD drive/card. Having same problem and had my doubts w/the cable. Just ordered the 980, but will retry 980 Pro and see if that will work! EDT: just tested w/thunderbolt 3 cable and w/980 PRO SSD card…it WORKS! Smallrig cable "bad"
That’s normal you need the right usb c cable to transfer high volume of data to the ssd like prores. Smallrig should have add a cable in this kit for data.
Got this today. Incredibly frustrated trying to get iPhone 16 Pro aligned with the filter adapter. Loosened all the Allen screws and moved everything around. Finally ended up removing the filter adapter. Didn't feel comfortable shooting with the phone clamped way left..Otherwise,quite a nice kit. I hope SmallRig has a workaround in the future.
It hasn't been fixed, as it would require the lens/filter adapter to be redesigned. Frankly, I'm amazed that a reputable company like Smallrig let the product out the door with such a serious (and obvious!) flaw.
@@EsquirePhotography Smallrig sent me a "replacement" that was identical (exactly the same flaws) to the one I'd purchased from B&H, even though I'd carefully explained the issues to them. They seem to be doubling down on their mistake.
I just had the very same issue after getting my package released by paying taxes and import duty - seems the design is incompatible with the iPhone 16 Pro, how did you remove the lens adapter? mine only moved a few mm with the screws loosened? how do you use the filter afterwards?
@@ezi0n To remove the adapter, completely remove the two screws that you loosened and the adapter will then tilt out. To use the filter afterwards, you could buy the Smallrig FilMov case for the 16 Pro (or Max) plus its 67mm filter adapter, then use the filter that came with the "Brandon Li" kit (or any other 67mm filter). Then, you can insert that combination into this cage, and both the clamp arms and MagSafe magnet will engage. It's a clunky and expensive solution, and the connection still isn't all that secure anyway. Personally, I would avoid these Smallrig products (if I hadn't already bought ALL of them while trying to fix the problem...) until their engineers get their act together and design something that actually works.
I came back here again and I have a question. I bought Brandon Li cage kit for iPhone 16 pro. The side handle wireless button is working, but the zoom is not working(as you indicated), in my Samsung S24 Ultra both the zoom and start/stop buttons working. I have another Bluetooth with a zoom button, Samsung works.iPhone 16 pro not. Not working with Filmic Pro too. Did you ask the small rig for the reason?
It seems like the magnetic clamp does not allow the iPhone 15/16 Pro Max to be mounted correctly when positioned to fit the antiglare plates? Isn't the MagSafe area on the iPhone at the center of the phone? Also, it looks like the iPhone is slightly tilted when mounted (positioned higher up in the corner with the cameras than the opposite corner), which makes pictures/videoes slightly tilted, too?
Ya this may be a point of issue. The sole review on B&H at this time, states something of this by the user. The phone appears offset when the filters are in use. Hard to tell what sort of an issue this is or will be until more users utilize all the features. I’m sir if it’s an issue, there will be plenty of complaints. Maybe there’s a workaround someone will find.

Thanks for sharing the rig. I think this will be a big hit. I've grown weary of constantly updating my phone and waiting for new cages. This appears to be well thought out. Are any of the magnetic filter adapters threaded so we can use our own filters? SmallRig has had problems with the magnets before, does that seem to be corrected? Thanks!
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a great camera, especially for vlogging. The main downside is its limited focal length, which makes it less versatile than an iPhone. The iPhone can be upgraded in many ways, extending its functionality for different shooting needs.
Very interesting. How does this work with mounting lenses to the phone? Will the cage accommodate this? I like shooting anamorphic lenses on my iPhone…are there options for mounts for the cage for those?
Unfortunately, SmallRig does not make third-party plates for this rig. However, the plate is removable, so you can use the adapter that comes with third-party lenses. For example, SANDMARC offers cases where you can mount their lenses, or you can use the clip they provide. Most companies usually include these adapters, allowing you to mount the lenses on your phone easily using the rig.

Hey Benett! Great review, you gave me confidence to order the kit for myself. I have one question: the Anti-Glare Magnetic Plate for iPhone, is it an universal iPhone Plate? Will it work with iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max? Will it be future-proof for upcoming iPhone generations or do you think one might buy new plates? Thank you in advance!
I have been looking for budget options to get started that will work on a gimbal too. This seems good but do the filters work while keeping iPhone official case on? I don’t really want to have to remove my case while out and about.
Yes, I also have the official iPhone case, and I’ve tested it with the rig (scrip to the section where I did the audio test). I had no issues using it with the magnetic filter :)
The link that you have for the Thunderbolt 4 cable is 2.3 ft. long for the shortest cable and 6 ft for the longest. But the cable your using in the video looks way shorter. Are you using a different brand than the one in your provided link?
Thanks for the support! Yes, the power bank is also compatible with Android; however, it has a MagSafe feature that only works with MagSafe-compatible devices.
While staying small is important, adding a few accessories to a mobile doesn’t make it a DSLR. Accessories like grips, filters, or batteries enhance the phone’s performance without making it bulky. Even with these extras, a phone setup is still far more compact and portable than a DSLR, but it gives you pro-level control and quality when needed. You get the best of both worlds: portability and flexibility.
Hello. Super channel. Thank you for this video. I'm thinking about getting a cage to shoot additional scenes on my iphone 16 pro. Just wondering if I can put the iphone 16 pro in this cage with the UAG Monarch Carbon Fiber cover. Is that possible ? The cover has a megasafe too. Thank you very much for your early reply.
you wont be able to align the iPhone 16 Pro with the lens adapter as I just found out - really frustrating to say the least after having to pay import duty and taxes to get it released just to find out it is incompatible, something smartrig could perfectly advertise on their website. They even have compatible ssds in the manual but no phone compatibility list.

ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO FOR SMALLRIG BRANDON LI 'S ALL-IN- ONE VIDEO KIT WHICH I HAVE NOW PURCHASED. WHILE SETUP WAS STRAIGHT FORWARD I HAVE ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WITH THE SIDE HANDLE, ZOOM/FOCUS CONTROL. I HAVE I PHONE 16 PRO MAX. AND HAVE INSTALLED A SAMSUNG 980 SSD IN THE HANDLE AND HAVE CONNECTED TO THE HUB VIA THUNDERBOLT 4 CABLE. THE SIDE HANDLE IS WORKING - WITH PHOTOS AND VIDEO IN BOTH THE NATIVE APP AND THE BLACKMAGIC CAMERA APP. HOWEVER THE ZOOM CONTROL SHOWS NO RESPONSE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A GREY DOT WHICH TRAVELS ACROSS THE SCREEN WHEN ACTIVATED. I HAVE FORMATED TO EXFAT WITHOUT SUCCESS.I ALSO CONTACTED SAMSUNG WHO ADVISED THAT THIS TYPE OF SSD WAS DESIGNED MORE FOR INSTALLATION ON LAPTOP/DESKTOP AND NOT AS AN EXTERNAL HARDRIVE. HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM AND IF SO CAN YOU ADVISE HOW TO SOLVE THIS.
You can shoot until the storage fills up, just note: continuous recording for extended periods (over 40 minutes), use an external power supply through the docking station to power the SSD. This way you can ensure a stable data transmission and smooth video recording.
I don´t understand these companies. All these solutions take away the main value of the phone. Portability and quick access. Just give us a grip with an internal ssd installed that I can connect directly to the usb-c port.
A grippy slightly rugged case (still can pocket fairly easily) with ssd in it (inc possible small battery too maybe). Oh and filters that don’t cost a fortune! It is quite a bit to ask of a case though. I wouldn’t mind this smallrig setup but for something like a nature walk you just want a case no real need for the big cage.
@@TMPDai Yeah I've watched a lot of those cage rig videos, and they're pretty much all the same. None really stand out with interesting features. The main issue with these is that you have to find a way to mount every single accessory separately all around the cage and the end result is something huge, chaotic and lacking portability. They need to design a rig with a well built-in USB-C hub, well built-in SSD holder and mic receiver mount close or onto the USB-C Hub, and a power bank built in one of the handles. SSD, Mic and power bank are the main 3 things people usually want. The end result should look clean and portable. They should get inspiration from the minimalist set-ups that people have come up with on youtube and put everything into a well designed rig.
Polar Pro probably has the best setup right now with their case, grip, and filter setup. Just wish their filters were more like Moments new "Quicklock" filters. And they need an external storage solution.
Freewell genius or Sherpa. I currently have the genius version and have been enjoying it so much. Shot the most I’ve ever done on phone with a purpose rather than random sky videos and etc lol.
I hope the next version will have more branding and artist signatures. I'm sure Smallrig will find some more space to place a signature or logo. Annoying.
Thanks for this great video. I was able to get mine to work by first formatting the SSD to exFAT while connected to my MacBook Pro. Then, using the flat SmallRig cable I attached the flat end to the SSD handle and the other end into the SmallRig hub using the USB 3.1 port. Then the attached hub cable into the iPhone 15 Pro. At that point, I was able to see the drive in the Black Magic video app. However, I still have the same issue you did with connecting the bluetooth trigger and zoom control. It worked once but now won't connect, even after giving it a full charge. Hope this info is helpful to folks out there. Still waiting for my pre-order of this to be delivered. Really excited about the integrated SSD the most.
Awesome!
Also preordered it a couple weeks ago.
What about using other lenses… from Moment, Freewell, etc.?
Unfortunately it does not come with adapter plates
Can you attach other smallrig 67mm magnetic filter, like black mist?
Do you have a referral code for when I sign up? It’s asking for one and I wanted to make sure before I go through with it.
wonder if u have to pair the remote with ur phone first before selecting in the app?
you don’t have to :)
@@BenettGraezer did u get it working
Thank you best review ❤
Glad you liked it!
I’ve updated the link. The one I have is not available on Amazon, but from the specs is the same and avaiblle in different lengths: geni.us/lgXfjb
will this fit iphone 16 pro max? thx
Yes
Hi Benett, just a quick question does it fits iPhone 16 Pro Max ? I just got this rig 😊
Alvin
Yes it does 👍🏻
Is this model also usable with a regular iPhone 15?
Yes
@@BenettGraezer Great, thank you so much for your reply !
Hello. You make great videos. I would like to know if 67 magnetic filters from another brand can be adapted?
Thanks, no unfortunately not
I just got mine using your link in return for your good video. One question about The power bank: Is it compatible with android or Samsung? Thank you
Thanks for the support! Yes, the power bank is also compatible with Android; however, it has a MagSafe feature that only works with MagSafe-compatible devices.
@@BenettGraezer what option do you recommend? Sorry for the questionnaire .
Can I use with a thinner (e.g. the Reeflex MagSafe Case) iPhone case. I don't walk around with my phone all day long without a case
Yes you’ll be able to also use it with a case 👍🏻
@@BenettGraezer Check :D Thanks
Al final lo que se quiere es ser mas pequeño , por eso es la portabilidad del movil eso es volver a tener un equipo reflex.
Can you mount the entire setup on a full size tripod?
Absolutely 👍🏻
I have smallRig mini Hub you've got I was recording videos but it keeps drop out my external SSD connection on BlackMagic App , I hooked up with 20W powerBank, I tested with 3 SSDs, few PowerBanks and few TypeC cables still no luck did you have any trouble on your end? I have iPhone 15 Pro. cheers
Does it work with mobile lenses like wide angle and telephoto?
Absolutely 👍🏻
how long can you shoot with this setup? 1tb and 5000mah battery???
You can shoot until the storage fills up, just note: continuous recording for extended periods (over 40 minutes), use an external power supply through the docking station to power the SSD. This way you can ensure a stable data transmission and smooth video recording.
Hello, where can i get the bag for the smallrig cage that you use in the video?
Its included when you purchase the all in one kit :)
@@BenettGraezer thanks a lot 👍🏼
Can this work with iPhone 14 Pro Max?
Yes 👍🏻
Can i use this in iphone13promX?
Yes 👍🏻
It's already dope, but if it had a built in stabilizer, that would be even better!
Glad you like it!
Any idea how this does with say a 60 minute recording.
how did you format the SSD disk thank you
I saw a review on this where the user formatted in exfat. But it may depend on if you are Android or iOS.

DOES IT WORKS FOR IPHONE 16 MAX PRO
Yes 💯
I don´t understand these companies. All these solutions take away the main value of the phone. Portability and quick access. Just give us a grip with an internal ssd installed that I can connect directly to the usb-c port.
A grippy slightly rugged case (still can pocket fairly easily) with ssd in it (inc possible small battery too maybe). Oh and filters that don’t cost a fortune! It is quite a bit to ask of a case though.
I wouldn’t mind this smallrig setup but for something like a nature walk you just want a case no real need for the big cage.
That’s so giant lol it’s the opposite of what I’d want for a mobile video camera. Might as well use an a6700 at that point
Exactly. Plus, this type of cage is nothing special. There are plenty on the market with much cheaper prices
@@TMPDai NEEWER, for example, which in some ways is also better designed even though it is far less expensive than the Smallrig.
but the rig is too big and bullky. wondering when one of the brands with have more compact stuff
Polar Pro probably has the best setup right now with their case, grip, and filter setup. Just wish their filters were more like Moments new "Quicklock" filters. And they need an external storage solution.
@@cweb1988 yep... I have for my 14Pro... I also have ShifCam SnapGrip and its amazing. Waiting to see for my 16ProMax
Annoying.
😮
Interesting priorities.
Absolutely annoyed, I purchased the the universal rig and handles separately last month now this!
Sorry to hear that :/
Thanks for this great video.
This rig is still amazing and I plan to do a full review on my channel as well. ruclips.net/user/JohnLaGuardia
Thanks for sharing your insights 👍🏻
240$… whew….
Awfully big..
@BenettGraezer Do the handles and accessories for the all in one also fit the iPhone 15 Pro Max Kit (SmallRig x Brandon Li)????
Yes, except for the magnetic VND Filter, as it has a lager thread.
Thanks Benett G for all the information you share with us Much appreciated
