You can still tell when its shot on iphone but its getting so good. It just can't beat the physics of light moving through glass and onto a sensor five times bigger. But the convenience is amazing. For youtubers it's a no-brainer. I'd love to make it my next phone, but the storage cost of shooting LOG, even with the black magic app you mentioned, are still going to push that price up.
Sata or m.2 SSDs with a 10G USB carrier are *the cheapest* flash storage option there is. And the iPhone 15 is compatible with that, so I don't know what you mean.
@Veriflon88 carrying around an external SSD is not convenient for capturing quick moments. It makes sense in a professional environment, or to dump footage after the fact, about for the casual user who just wants to record quick video of their kids or whatever in the best quality an external SSD is not appropriate. They're just going to have to pony up for more storage. Edit: Almost 3gb of data is used for every minute of Apple's ProRes on iphone, so a base Iphone Pro with 128 gb could store maybe 30 minutes of footage, with OS and apps considered. That's like travelling back in time to the days of VHS-Compact tapes. Even the 1TB model would only let you shoot for 4 or 5 hours before filling the drive, and that's a £500 premium on top of the already £1000 phone. The HEVC of the blackmagic app would increase recording times by 10x, so that's suitable for every day users, but its less friendly for normal every day users. For enthusiasts its great, all the control you could want, but its clunky.
7:17 I’d love to hear your perspective about that. I have a somewhat good idea of what the general sentiment about external lenses is, but I still think it would be an interesting topic to explore.
why should we shoot log vs whatever the normal iPhone video is? Is it to colourgrade/put luts on better? Can we find a way to shoot log on iPhone 13? Via a app I guess?
Totally agree on what you said about the accessability: Apple should make filming in ProRes Log as easy as just applying another filter in your video app.
7:24 that actually looks pretty nice. DoF is about the only thing holding me back from just going full on iPhone these days (and that low light issue or no tilt screen) but other than that...just super impressed with the video it can handle with LOG. If they could find a way to get more bokeh in the camera tho (not software) for creative shots I'd be completely sold. Or they could just release a Leica Q3 like iPhone, just for shooting photo/video with a bigger lens/sensor but slides in your pocket even easier than a Leica or Fuji point and shoot:)
Purely Optical Background & Foreground Bokeh Can be Easily Generated on i-Phone without Aide of Any Digital Tweak like Portrait Mode and/or Cinematic Mode by Using 77 mm or 120 mm Telephoto Lens If Only YA've Got Decent Skill & Knowledge about Camera & Lens ❗️

Is it better to export footage from the Black Magic camera app with a LUT baked into the footage or do you ONLY use a LUT to view what the Log footage would look like? Does it make a difference?
I'd only ever recommend baking in a LUT within the app if you planned on uploading/using the clip immediately. It's otherwise only a tool for accessing the look and exposure.
Great video showing the advantages of LOG. It would be helpful if you did a further breakdown into your colour grading process to really show the flexability. I noticed a lot of the shots in this, whilst gorgeous, seemed to have some diffusion/halation applied. It'd be nice to see how the clean footage looks when using a less filmic look.
Thanks for the feedback! I am planning a color-grading video for the future so I'll likely cover it in that video. Only the intro has film grain the rest of the video is clean, with no post-halation or diffusion was added. What you probably see is just the sun reflecting off the water in certain shots the way it came out also surprised me.
If only there was a mobile "compact" camera with 4k/60 (or 120), built-in ND, 1" sensor and fast 24 to 50 zoom (or separate sensor like the iPhone), with log + lut preview built in... Sony stopped at RX100vii, a viii could have been this...
Hi Brandon, this is a very well made and informative video. Considering that you mentioned the accessibility of LOG to people trying to create an archive of important videos and can be treated as a gateway to shooting higher quality videos, what settings are important/configuration in black magic would you recommend for the average user to default to when quickly capturing a candid moment in normal lighting? Also, what would be important to modify to that configuration for higher/lower light levels?
This doesn't apply to all LOG profiles but in the case of the iPhone keep your ISO low, auto white balance when necessary unless you have time to do it manually, and your shutter angle (180 or 1/48) as close to double your frame rate as possible. An ND filter may be a good accessory to pick up to help keep your exposure consistent gives you another layer of control besides ISO and Shutter.
If you plan on shooting apple log outside often I'd recommend one yes. It is not strictly required but your motion blur will be more akin to film and your exposure will be easier to control.

This is nuts. The difference between the default footage is crazy - looks amazing! Totally see this boosting the quality of run & gun work - if people can just bake the rec709 lut on the phone and reconvert to a smaller file size... Would be convenient if it's all going back to h.264/5 at the end of the day anyway. I suppose the one downside of thinking this could be good for run/gun would be that it's a lot of post production work to get the grade just right. I just wish there was a "less aggressive" post-processsing option that sat in between log and default video. Please correct me if I'm mistaken on the way it works, curious what you other folks think would be the best case scenario! I really wish I had a camera that I could play with grading without breaking the footage. This really is a game changer and I hope Android manuf. can take a stab at mobile filmmaking...

This is a really helpful video Brandon, thank you. I understand using blackmagic for HEVC Log is beneficial for file size, but I’d like to see you explain what I’m actually sacrificing by not using ProRes Log?
Dynamic range, and you are at the whim of Apples processing. So added sharpness and exposure choices that you can't undo or change much after the fact.
Xiaomi 13t pro (and maybe other xiaomi phones) can also record in LOG. Would be nice if you can get a hand on this phone and make a comparison with the Iphone
Is it possible to do the same or is there something equivalent in the android world? Would love for you to explore that if possible and even compare it.
no, you can do fake log which does not access true sensor data, it is a log created over the already processed footage, you can get it w apps and different phones etc.
_Recording in ProRes still really good because I have 70% control over the images colors and contrast In comparison to the standard, where I only had 14% control, but the rest of the image was burnt in specifically from the iPhone But with the iPhone 15 Pro we get 92.7% control over the image. Unfortunately it’s not true RAW recording which is owned and patented by RED a battle Apple lost in court for, but I’m still recording and getting pure details instead of digital sharpening, but a creamy rich look_
I've been shooting log (or at least HLG) on my Samsung galaxy S10 for the past while and all the benefits you mentioned are there on Android too. It also lacks the downside of needing grading since there's an option to auto correct it to non HLG when you share through the phone. When everyone is praising Apple for Log and prores availability, they shouldn't forget that it was present on the android side ages ago.
Android does not have true log, the log you experienced in the Samsung is the same log iphone had with Filmic Pro, which is a fake log that doesn't access the sensor data but is created from already processed video. So no, Android phones have not had true Log for years, in fact they still do not have true log.
