LOG and Pro Res are the only reason I got an iPhone. To me, the best thing about LOG is that you're capturing pretty much like making a RAW with a DSLR camera. It's as close to whatever the sensor captured with a little bit of (acceptable) compression added. This means you're free to add whatever you want afterwards. It's always great to have pure unprocessed master footage. I'm looking at seeing if I can get it to work with a 4TB NVMe disk in an enclosure when I have time. But those file sizes are biiiiiiiiig. Great video .
The Blackmagic app supports the same Apple log as the native app. Besides some more manual controls its biggest advantage for me is that it gives you the option to use a higher compression ProRes variant (ProRes 422, 422 LT or 422 Proxy), which can help reduce the storage need by a lot without sacrificing much quality.
Great overview, thanks for posting this, the images you captured/graded look awesome! I do have to mention that the Blackmagic app has many benefits, including a much “cleaner” image, especially in the shadows as noted by many. Also, you can record 4k/60/Log without the need of an external SSD, and on a pinch when you find yourself without a rig, this becomes very handy. Also, you can monitor with LUTs and many other monitoring tools which the native app lacks. Keep them videos coming!
Thanks a lot! Yeah I used the Blackmagic Camera app for a little bit and noticed the aspects you highlighted. In a controlled, slow environment this would definitely be my choice. If I run and gun I found myself opting for the native app.
The 15 Pro cinematic short film of yours is the absolute best I've seen so far! Truly amazing job. Would you care to share which rig you used while filming? Seems much more comfortable to move with the rig instead of holding the phone in your hands directly.
Apple log still uses quite a bit of sharpening (and also lots of NR). In Resolve you can process the effects away with more processing as you can guess: Gaussian Blur Low Radius sharpening. The image will show more texture but less sharpening halos that way and will look way more organic.
Ya I've been playing with Apple Log quite a bit and have to add sharpening if anything. If they're adding it, it is VERY minimal. Same with NR.@@tradingcafe_fr
what editing software is being used to edit the log footage? Im a little confused on how to edit, so i downloaded the FREE Conversion LUT - Apple LOG to REC709 now how do i use it?
I’ve been watching a lot of these types of tutorials for the 15PM and watching your videos i get such a good vibe, just wanted to point out it makes a big difference in learning
It does offer more ProRes flavours. I have not done tests if the LOG is the same but I found the point exposure tools unreliable and in run and gun scenarios I found the native app more convenient for the use case.
Hi Joey, your videos are very inspiring and packed with great information! I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Osmo 6 Gimble but I'm having trouble finding a USB 3 to USB 3 cable to connect my phone with my Samsung T7 external drive that is flexible enough to allow the gimble to work properly. What cable do you use with Osmo Gimble and your external SSD?
Thanks! I am myself still on the search for the perfect cable. The ones I used cause it crash occasionally at odd angles particularly. No reco on a cable yet but will keep you posted if I find a fast, light, and flexible one.
I really enjoyed this video … I am from Chicago so I really appreciate you using this great city! My question … can I use your LUTS in Da Vinci Resolve 19 - free version? Thanks 🎥
What do you mean you were never a fan of Blackmagic Cam app log profile? It has the Apple ProRes 422 HQ codec and Apple Log - HDR colorspace as an option. What are you referring to specifically?
Great video on this new iPhone feature. But one of main things I can’t stand about the color grading examples I see is how people crush the blacks or increase the contrast too much.
I have two different versions in the LUT pack, one that works with footage that is shot in REC709 (either when you shoot in standard image profile or convert the LOG footage with apples conversion LUT) and then one set that converts and applies the creative look in one. So yes ;)
@@Joey_Helms Thanks for the info. Tried a couple of your luts, and they are worth every penny! Maybe, with a next video, you can explane for newbies like me how to get the adjustment layer in final cut pro? 🙂 It isnt a standard yet in fcp.

Is there an option to edit these within the phone? I don’t do any professional filming, but I would like to take a good quality video solely on the phone when an occasion allows.

Check the inspector on the right. Under ‚I‘ column set it up as „extended“. There you see „Camera LUTs“. This would be the place where they maybe auto added the LUT though I haven’t experienced that.
That digital sharpening is not added to Apple ProRes Log is great news. Color grading wise, I stick to DaVinci Resolve. You just can't beat industry standard color grading tools. Thanks for the heads up on the sharpening aspect of ProRes Log. I'm actually waiting for my iPhone 15 Pro to ship. Now, I'm even more excited. May I ask your prefer frame rate for normal recording and slow motion, for me, I love shooting at 24 FPS and 60 FPS for slomo 🙂
Hi Joe can you do a tutorial on bumarang effect and black magic app too
Maybe I’m misunderstanding- doesn’t the Blackmagic app use the internal Apple log profile (plus allows lower data rate formats like ProResLT)?
It does offer more ProRes flavours. I have not done tests if the LOG is the same but I found the point exposure tools unreliable and in run and gun scenarios I found the native app more convenient for the use case.
You can even shoot 10 bit H265 in Apple Log with the Blackmagic app. It's fantastic.
It's the same Apple Log offered in the native app. Monitoring on blackmagic's app was a bit buggy, but latest update has fixed this.
Can the video taken with Apple Log be edited in the Windows environment?
Yes, absolutely
