In the "camera" tab of the settings, I would recommend changing the Shutter measurement from "speed" to "angle". Then back to the main screen, for "shutter" select 180°. Then you are sure to get the right shutter speed no matter your fps and don't have to worry about changing it.
@@connorwagstaff2348 unless it is a bright sunny day and you do not have ND filters... in that case shutter option is a bit better because you can crank it up. You will lose motion blur but the picture will be visible :)
Anywhere I shoot, inside or outside it's way too bright at 1/48 shutter with an iso at 1250 ISO unless it's nighttime another isn't any light but with any sort of lighting it's way too bright. Does increasing the shutter speed somehow compromise the dynamic range? I assume the only thing that affects the dynamic range in this example is the ISO and the shutter can be anything above 1/48.
Found this video 9 months after uploaded and it is an amazing explanation on everything I needed. Subscribed and will look forward to more videos from you.
Thanks a bunch with how to lock the ISO via the locking the shutter. I went out this afternoon and was a happy camper. Yes the only real accessory we need is the VND filter other than the external SSD - I went with the Crucial X10 small and convent to carry. The iPhone 15 Pros with BMC app have been a game changer for me. Thanks for your clear and pertinent video.
I do not agree with the ISO 1250 advice at all. The iPhone quality really suffers when you raise the ISO. Even if you may not see noise its because the camera uses very aggressive noise reduction which leads to very blotchy details and mush. Yes it lifts the clip point so you get more highlight stops but you destroy the fidelity of the video by doing so. It's much better to shoot under exposed like everyone else is suggesting. Apple log maps a ton of stops below middle gray and only 3 stops over middle gray. By shooting under by just 2 stops we now have 5 stops over middle gray or much closer to other log formats. Some of the best log formats typically only have 6 stops over middle gray. While shooting under is typically not the best choice the way the iPhone and Apple Log work there is a ton of detail in the shadows and it is much cleaner to shoot under vs using ISO 1250. You still get a lot of highlight range if you need it but much cleaner details. Plus one really needs to determine if they really need that many highlight stops of range. Getting 6 stops over middle gray only to crush it down to rec709 is kind of pointless. Log formats are not a one size fits all format. They are made so we can choose what is more important for the shot. Shadow stops or highlight stops. Sort of like how the BMD Pocket cameras work. ISO is used to determine how the stops are mapped under vs over middle gray. Apple Log at lower ISO levels clip sooner in the highlights but thats because more of the stops are mapped in the shadows below middle gray. The details 99% more likely to be seen and have importance to the story. Another reason ISO 1250 is not a good suggestion is because a lot of narrative work tends to be lit to be lower contrast and fit much better within a limited rec709 range. We rarely have details that go over 90% reflectance and just don't need a lot of extra highlight stops. They become pointless and a large throw away portion of the log curve values. Apple Log as it is is well suited for this since it easily covers a normal contrast range for rec709. Shooting at ISO 1250 would not really gain anything extra and what it did gain would likely be thrown out. Dynamic range is nice to have but not at the expense of sacrificing everything else important just to say you have more stops of range. Those stops need to serve a purpose. Finally ISO 55 outdoors in bright sunlight and 24p 1/48th already requires at least 7 stops of ND filtering. If shooting two stops under thats 9 stops of filtering which is a lot. Shooting at ISO 1250 is almost 5 stops more ND filtering needed. Thats at least 12 stops of ND filtering which is an insane amount. Its hard enough finding a decent filter system for the iPhone and a real challenge trying to use 12 stops of filtering.
@@rainer_wolf I agree with you both and am finding 1250 extremely noisy with nd filter in my tests. Best to stick to regular iso in my humble opinion, even though I respect Gerald Undone and Matt opinion greatly I have to go with my personal experience.
High ISO doesn't create noise- low light exposure does. High ISO only illuminates all the noise that was already there because of such low light exposure.
@@Techno_Ramahey, how do you measure if you are over or under exposing? On a camera you have a meter that shows you but on this app I don’t know, esp when shooting in log. Thanks
I’m kinda taken aback at how confidently wrong you are regarding ISO and codec with regard to dynamic range. All in the name of selling a few LUTs and cheap NDs.
Actually, I heard that you do want to increase your ISO above the lowest it forces many cameras to work harder and produce a better algorithm as opposed to using a film camera where you would always set it to 100 if possible
Pro cameras shooting log will have a Base ISO that is generally around 800. The 15 pro was tested extensively and its shown that 1250 is the best for the Apple Log.

Hello! Tell me please how can I change the language in Blackmagic Camera App. I use iPhone 15 Pro. After installation I have Chinese, but need English.
Is HEVC.265 with Blackmagic app on an iPhone 12 (at 4k, 30fps) the best for squeezing out every drop of video quality? (speaking independent of ISO, etc).
Extremely useful tutorial, thank you! So many out there that don't explain the quirks of exposure in BMC, but you did a really good job. Here's a question: Why do you think there's no "AUTO" option in ISO? I wish I could lock the shutter speed for motion blur, but then have ISO be the wildcard that it uses for auto exposure. I don't see why that couldn't be an option, with an [AUTO] button at the top so you could disable it and go full manual. Maybe there's some expsure-triangle reason why it's not possible that I'm not thinking of... Do you know? Or should we be lobbying BM to update it 😅 (my ND filter and Neewer mounting cage are on their way. Like you say, I don't WANT to rig it up, but it does look like it's simply necessary to use filters, just like it is on all but the most outrageously expensive cinema cameras)
ProRes 422 is easier to edit on intel macs especially if you edit multicam or tend to export back and forth for effects and colorgrading. ProRes gives you a smooth playback experience and no destruction when color grading or VFX.

Matt put the luts for download for free for us 😁😁😁😁
Even with 6-9 VND at 1250 iso 4K 30p you still overexpose in sunlight. What to do? Thanks for the video Matt
Hey! You’ll want to lower the ISO then. Even with less dynamic range it’s the best option
@@whoismatt makes sense, even at the lowest iso Apple log is lovely
super helpful
Good day, please tell me, save video for 0 sec, what’s it?
Although the recording is going well
Can you talk about the audio settings? Whenever I export the videos from the blackmagic cam app to my premiere pro, the audio and video are not synced.
Neva stop 🏁
I have been following your guide - newbie here! I have imported a lut to Blackmagic camera app and selected “record lut to clip” - however if I try to share the video to stories in Instagram it shows it without the lut applied and I’m unsure why? Anyone able to help?
Hello, are you filming your video face cam with iphone 15 pro max ?
If yes, can you give me please your settings exactly blackmagic camera ?
Nice video
Thank you
Good job with this video, it did help a lot!
PS: I respect your work but people are looking into this software because it's free, the competitor is selling their product for 39$/year and you are selling the luts for 140$. It's too much for luts man, maybe make a package just for iphone 15 pro users, or maybe just one natural lut and sell it for a lot less. Again I respect your work but this is not the audience for that price.
I did all of these except I did HD/ 1080p to save more space but my footage got really muddy, how can I prevent that and have a sharp image?
LEGEND!
apple log isn't an option for me on my app, what is a 2nd best option you would recommend
Hey. How do I import this h.265 footage into davinci on a windows machine. It's not showing up in the media pool and it seems to be a .mov file when I see in a folder on my computer. Whereas in the phone it is a .hevc file. Any info on this would be great!
Hey Matt- I tried to use your coupon code for the luts package and it says it is invalid so can you check into that?! I was thinking about buy one of them.
Is the h265 4:2:0 or 4:2:2?
Is this camera only for taking videos or does it take photos too?
Hello! Tell me please how can I change the language in Blackmagic Camera App. I use iPhone 15 Pro. After installation I have Chinese, but need English.
thanks matty
How do I measure my exposure once my ND filter is on? Do I still need to expose 1 stop under/to the right?
Is HEVC.265 with Blackmagic app on an iPhone 12 (at 4k, 30fps) the best for squeezing out every drop of video quality? (speaking independent of ISO, etc).
That’s what I would use
I have a iPhone 14 Pro so apple log isn’t an option for color space. What is the second best option?
Extremely useful tutorial, thank you! So many out there that don't explain the quirks of exposure in BMC, but you did a really good job.
Here's a question: Why do you think there's no "AUTO" option in ISO? I wish I could lock the shutter speed for motion blur, but then have ISO be the wildcard that it uses for auto exposure. I don't see why that couldn't be an option, with an [AUTO] button at the top so you could disable it and go full manual.
Maybe there's some expsure-triangle reason why it's not possible that I'm not thinking of... Do you know? Or should we be lobbying BM to update it 😅
(my ND filter and Neewer mounting cage are on their way. Like you say, I don't WANT to rig it up, but it does look like it's simply necessary to use filters, just like it is on all but the most outrageously expensive cinema cameras)
I thought it was always best to have the lowest iso possible to not lose detail ?
Same…. I thought high ISO introduced noise.
Teşekkür ederiz .
Do i still turn my iso to around 1280- 1600 if i dont have a nd filter?
ProRes 422 is easier to edit on intel macs especially if you edit multicam or tend to export back and forth for effects and colorgrading. ProRes gives you a smooth playback experience and no destruction when color grading or VFX.
Do you have recommended settings for the IPhone 14 plus?
good video. Can you do a video on setting up the BM iphone App to recored to an (external) SSD?
Hello, thanks for this guide! Now android app is also out, so requesting you to create similar guide on S24 as well.
