My Thoughts on The Canon 80D after 1 Month of Testing it Out

  • I have now been using the Canon 80D for month now. I love this camera for being a crop senor 1.6x crop factor camera. This camera is able to do 7 frames per second. It can shoot 1080p at 60fps. It has great auto focusing while in video mode. If you are looking for a new dslr camera body take a look at this Canon eos 80D.

Just bought the 80D - as a 30 year Photographer I'd like to suggest that this Camera is mid range - certainly not entry level.

It's only deemed a 'starter camera' to obnoxious gear heads who spend more time wanking over their gear and talking shit on forums rather than getting off their fat hairy arses and actually going out to shoot.

Completely ruined that by calling this entry level. "It's entry level to me". Big woop, do you want a pat on the back? It's marketed as, and is, an enthusiast camera. £1000 on a camera is nowhere near entry level.

I currently own the 70D, but I am seriously looking into the 80D for the additional video, and for the additional focus points. I am starting to do more video when I travel. So it sounds like the upgrade is worth it.

80D has very little additional video. Firstly the best video is ALL-I compression, but 80D is marginally better. If you shoot PBI video then you have some 80D advantages. 70D with ML means raw video, which blows away any 80 DR sensor advantage in H264. The 70D with ML has 14 bit raw 720p 24fps continuous, or 10bit raw 24fps 1850 @ 2:39 near continuous. Focus Peaks, Zebras, and PIP magic zoom all make 70D + ML more useful for video.

I think you're pretty much alone with that opinion. A 1300D, 100D or maybe even 750D would be entry level. The two digit Canon series, Nikon D7X00 series or Pentax K3 series are decidedly advanced semi-pro cameras.

Hi David, I just stumbled upon this review after watching it some months back and buying the 80D at that time. Great overall review and helped me decide to buy the camera. I just wanted to mention one thing. You said you managed 25 shots in a burst before the buffer fills and then there is a long delay before the camera is usable again. Well this only happens if your SD card is not fast enough. I just replicated this 2 minutes ago to make sure I got my facts right... this is the results I get:
With a Sandisk Ultra Class 10 80MB/s card I only get 21 shots in a burst and indeed have the long wait for the buffer to empty before I can view my images or shoot again. It does let me change exposure settings though for when it is next ready to shoot.
However, and this is the big one... With a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s card I get 27/28 shots in the initial 7fps burst but then the camera continues to fire at a constant rate of 4fps and NEVER stops. Well, I say never, it had not stopped when I got bored and let go of the shutter button after 186 shots. Not only did the buffer never fill to stopping point, but because shooting slowed to 4fps, as soon as you stop shooting the camera is immediately responsive and you can start looking at your images or firing again! I did this test shooting in RAW only. I have tested JPEGs in the past and I still got the initial 27/28 shot 7fps burst followed by 4-5 fps indefinitely after that... so no real advantage over RAW when using the faster SD card. You get about an extra fps after the initial burst, but lose control in post-processing.
The moral of the story is to buy a faster SD card. I only had those 2 cards available, I am curious what would happen with a 120MB/s card?

i have a 6D and an 80D. i use the 6D, with TS-E lenses for landscape. photography. But for my TS-E lenses, the 80D would be a better landscape camera. A few more pixels, a tilty screen, touchscreen, better resolving power, electronic level in the optical viewfinder. Tony Northrup discussed his reasoning in a recent video.

Hello! I want to know if there is any problem with the 80D mainboard like in the firsts canon 70D. I am an owner of a Canon 70D (for two years and a half) and it was the best camera but recently out of nowhere it shot down and the technical people said that it was a common problemn of that model, a problem with the mainboard. It could be really helpful for me if you now something about that, if the 80D has problemns with the mainboard also. Thank you! I look forward your response.

I am watching your video and I am liking it, but I would like to add a comment. I bought the 80D while I was in Viet Nam and I received in the mail when I was home. I have had the T3i, which I think is still a good camera, I left it with a friend in Viet Nam and he loves it and takes great photos with it. I also had a T5i which is also a great camera!! I traded my T5i for my other friend's international T3i (600D) (my friend ended up also buying a 70D in Ha Noi) because I was buying the 80D. I LOVE my 80D!! I could have bought the 7DMII or some other nicer camera, the 5DMIV is a little out of my price range, BUT the 80D is brand new technology. From what I read the video is better than any of the older nicer (more expensive) models.
The comments, I have read articles of some professionals that are still using the T2i for their shoots, My friend in Viet Nam takes very good photos with his T3i, I will be taking a T5i to him and pass the T3i to another friend and take another T5i for another friend. My friend really loves his 70D, I really love my 80D. I feel no shame when I take it out of my bag.
You mentioned about the motor noise of the auto focus. When you use the internal mike you still hear little clicks. If you use an external mike you don't hear them. Thank YOU for your video, it is very good. I really enjoy watching videos about the 80D. :) I hope you have a great 2017!!!

Nice review. a few thoughts. I have seen many enthusiasts as well as professionals keep a full frame as well as an aps-c camera for different applications. While purists would buy still buy a lack luster full frame camera instead of a feature rich aps-c like the 80D, i think its all about application.
I also wonder if this is "entry" level as you mention. I think not.
You also need to change the image / link of the SDXC card to "SDXC" (Shows SDHC class 10 as soon you say "SDXC" ) :)

I think before say something about megapixels, you really need to explain it. Megapixels really do not matter until you decide on the size of what you want to print. When you say blow up it up a little bit you need to explain when pixelation happens.

Definitely not entry level. It is mostly bought by photography enthusiasts and it is marketed that way too. I would suspect some professionals even use it as a second body (and a few as their main), especially if they do some video.

Exactly - we even have a local pro studio photographer using a 700D, not a typo - 700D, not 70D (which is my camera) to do our family photos. As you know a 700D is marketed as an entry level, not professional target market. But the photos still comes out great. It's the photographer who takes great pictures, not the camera.

I have this camera and love it. Only issue so far is that using manual mode indoors is the metering. Let me try to explain. With no flash, and assuming any combination of f stop and ISO that gives me a picture on the screen that I see with my own eyes, I always have to the shutter speed about -1 to -1.5. In other words, if I set the ISO and the f stop first, then the shutter speed always overexposes the shot relative to what I see if I set the shutter at "0" on the light meter. No matter what combinations of ISO and f stop I use, I always need to set the shutter speed such that the light meter is negative to get on the screen what I'm seeing in real life. So could this be the screen is inaccurate or is the light meter inaccurate?

    • @-BuddyGuy
      @-BuddyGuy 7 лет назад

Dumb questions maybe but have you set expo. simulation (photo options tab 5) to on? Is your metering set to evaluative (button on the top right next to iso button)? What lens are you using?

i'm on a tight budget and cannot afford the full frame canon models, i already have 3 different Efs lenses from my rebel T4i and i think its time for an upgrade, would you recommend this camera to someone who shoots mainly landscapes? will i notice a huge difference in terms of image quality if i upgrade to this model?

I've been seriously thinking about upgrading to this body but every review I watch starts to mainly focus on how it does video. I really dont care at all about recording video with my dslr, all i care about is how well it takes pictures. So would you recommend this body for someone that does mostly portrait and studio work?

Good write up, maybe I heard you wrong, you indicated that the Canon 60D is a full frame camera ,I think you meant the Canon 6D

He's a moron, what do you expect, he repeatedly calls the 80D a 'beginner' camera, when it's not. I'd hate to hear what he calls the likes of the 200D

Search 'Crop Sensors vs Full Frame :: Crop Or Crap?' in youtube. I keep going back to that video.

      @ropersix 7 лет назад

Since "crop" is pretty much the filmmaking standard, and the 80D is largely targeted to the video market, it shouldn't even be an issue at all for the camera. But it is...

the 70D had the same dual pixel tech, the 80D just got a better algorithm to track focus

Sure we have the new full frame cameras these days, but the 80D is a great camera for upgrading from ENTRY LEVEL REBEL CAMERAS(canon). 👀

Thanks so much for the input, but one important thing....
    The thing that irritates me
Are people who say "as a PROFESSIONAL photographer I don't need this...I like to get behind the camera...blah blah."
You know what...not everyone might be able-bodied like you or have all your faculties. Some people need touch screens...some people need swivelling fully articulating screens because hey physically can't do certain things. Like stop with that.
I understand you're giving your opinion but don't write something off just because you don't need it or care about it. And also 'professionalism' is vastly overrated. It's about using tools to get amazing images

Imo, its better than the 7dmkii in many ways. The AF is much improved (same processor with tweaks) awesome focus in low light and low light capabilities. However, its obvious got a slower frame rate and although the sensor is 24mp, I prefer the colours and range on the 20mp of the 7dmkii. For wildlife, the 80D is a brilliant camera for the price. Its what the 70d should have been.

You mentioned the ISO noise is worse on the t6i than the 80d. Well I believe they are actually the exact same sensor with the same digic 6 processor..

    • @sergiovegaradelgado3202
      @sergiovegaradelgado3202 7 лет назад +2

Pete Larson Yeah but Dxomark shows the sensor perfomance on the 80d is considerably better. However, I have an eos rebel t2i and I'm happy with it. Basically because the upper cameras are too expensive XD

The 80d is quite a lot better than the 600d (don't know about the 750d). F.e. ISO 1600 with the 600d is really not nice. It is doable with the 80d though.

  • @YourOwnAdventure

A seemingly biased review..... Of course the full frame is great and it does fulfill certain job requirements that are still behind the times (full frame snobs) but it shouldn't be compared to the 80d. The 80D is a VIDEO POWERHOUSE with better dynamic range, equal or better low-light performance, market leading AF, better monitoring both visual and audio, higher resolution, LESS EXPENSIVE. Oh, and I believe it to produce just as sharp images in photo mode, plus higher burst rate. Anyways, I do believe the full frame cameras to lead the market for photography and love the images they provide but It seems like the wall needs to become less apparent when comparing the two. Just compare them for what is seen on the screen, not whats inside. BUT WHAT ABOUT 4K tho?

  • @jbvig
