    Hello Martin, I just bought the Canon 80D and your review and demo of it was so powerful that it scared me. if I could retain just a portion of that information I would be a dangerous individual with this camera. it is my mission to learn as much as I can and I thank you for inspiring me.

    Possibly the best 80D review yet. I own one and after watching your video I realised that there are settings that even I don’t know about lol. The best review on the Canon 80D ever. You review for the average user and make it easy to understand. Other reviewers nit pick at the camera to the point where an average user will never experience the extreme issues. This is a mid range camera and your review shows that accurately. As an amateur user of the Canon 80D, your review hits the capability of the 80D spot on. Thank you for your easy to understand review. Keep up the good work.

    You deserve way more subscribers. Best review of the 80d I've seen and I've seen far too many haha.
    I Am tossing up between the 7d mkii and the 80d. I primarily will be using it for photos not video. I shoot all round anything and am only an enthusiast (not professional). Sports and street photography my focus atm. I wondered if the 80d would hold up with sports as I've heard the 7d mkii has far more intelligent subject tracking..thoughts?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +4

      That's very kind of you to say, thank you! In my mind, I have exactly the number I deserve and I'm very pleased with all of my RUclips statistics. I haven't reviewed the 7D MII, but I've also read that observation. My question would be that while this is of value to a professional who spends every working moment covering sports from the press areas of an arena, is it of equal value to an enthusiast. Of course, if money is no object ... you'll clearly be better served by the 7D MII, as well as full frame lenses.

    I was wondering when you were to review the Canon EOS 80D, but I am glad that you have! I have yet to fully use my 80D, but it is a solid all-around camera from Canon and the lack of 4k doesn't bother me for now, since I have no way to view, edit, and upload in 4k. Hi Maarten. By far the most comprehensive and informative review I have ever watched. Been eyeing the 80d for a while now trying to make up my mind. I notice that you managed to get clean hdmi out by pushing the info button (same as my current camera) but does autofocus still work and does it show the focus blocks. I need to record via the hdmi out and need clean hdmi out but with autofocus still working. My current camera only gives me clean hdmi out if I switch off the autofocus (or with Magic Lantern installed). The original brochures that were released just prior to the release of the 80d said "clean hdmi out for external recording".

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      What a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks so much for commenting. I don't have it here any longer to check (I return cameras after the review) but I believe the answer is yes - AF works, but no - the focus blocks don't appear. I think you see that in the video. Essentially, whatever you see on the LCD (not the viewfinder) appears on the HDMI out. There are no independent options for HDMI out. Hope this helps.

    • @ChangingParadigms
      @ChangingParadigms 7 лет назад

      Maarten Heilbron Thx Maarten. What I suspected. Clean hdmi out, like on the Canon 7d Mark ii and 5d Mark iii, feeds the same video signal that goes to the flashdisk to the hdmi port for clean, true 1080p external recording. All other Canon cameras feed the liveview instead which means that it is not true 1080 due to the back screen being 3:2 instead of 16:9 and of course, the focus block always being present. Only way to work around it is to switch to manual focus. Thanks again for a great review and for your reply. You definitely convinced me to do the upgrade 😊

    Hi Maarten, Great video! From Toronto and also own the 80D. From what I understand, you are using a full frame lens on this camera? (with aps-c sensor) Have you had any setbacks from doing so? Also, in response to other comments in the thread, if people want a flat picture profile (for video) they can easily download the 'Cinestyle' profile from Technicolor! It works amazing. Unless a camera is recording internally with 4:2:2, any log makes it incredibly difficult to colour correct later in post...

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you for your kind words - always appreciated. I was using a full frame lens for this review. There are no setbacks (other than FF lenses are more expensive than crop). In general, they're just better lenses. Thanks for the tip on the Cinestyle profile. I agree - for consumer cameras with limited colour depth and bit rate - log profiles are a choice of last resort when the dynamic range of the scene has no other solution.

      Maarten Heilbron well this would be my first proper camera, with which I’m looking to learn photography and videography, so the ratio between photos and videos would be approximately the same. I’ve read that for this purpose this would be an appropriate choice, for reasons such as flipping screen et cetera. My budget rests at around 1200€, might possibly stretch it a little if worth it. I congratulate you for the amazing work, will watch the reviews you kindly suggested. You officially have a new subscriber! Sorry for the long post. Any kind of suggestion is warmly appreciated. Keep up the great work!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the kind words, this would be an excellent choice - if you do manage to stretch the budget, get a better (prime) lens - 24 or 35mm for landscapes, 50 or 85mm for portraits.

    Excellent review as always. My Sony A6500 excursion was short lived. I sent it back. The buttons were too easy to accidental press when walking around (I didn't know this beforehand and botched a number of shots in DC as I'd somehow moved the Auto ISO settings while walking to a min of 800). The menus were painful (no surprise there).
    We are going on our annual Acadia trip next week (we only live 3 hrs away) and I am looking to rent the 80D body since I have a full Canon kit with my 40D.
    While full frame is now reasonably priced, I have a few EFS lenses that prevent that jump.

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks, always appreciate the kind words. The A6500 does have a menu option to lock the controls - but I see that advice comes to late ... enjoy your travels.

    Ive had a d30 since 2006 and it’s been to hell and back (literally war) and used weekly and had more knocks than a bare knuckle boxer and travelled more seas than Sinbad the Sailor and it’s still working like new. Anyway, finally gave in and bought a mint used d80 and it’s a VERY worthy replacement. I love it. Would only buy Canon after my d30 proved itself harder than Chuck Norris and it takes awesome photos that always delight and exceed my expectations. Caveat I bought a brand new d250 and broke it in 24 hours. Hence why I bought a used d80 instead

    Hi! Hope you’re having a great day🙂. I shoot photos on my phone and I am thinking of buying a good camera mainly for photography and a little bit of video. My two options are the Fujifilm XT-2 with a 23mm f1.4 and a 56mm f1.2. The other option is a Canon 80D with a sigma 50mm f1.4 and a sigma 18-35 f1.8. I want a camera that is reliable, has really good dynamic range. It should last me at least 2-3 years. Which camera should I get? Thankyou in advance. Your review was very good. I also intend to make some videos and was really impressed by the videos you showed using the 80d. But I also equally like the d7200 images and styling. Thanks! I appreciate your kind words. Either would be fine for wildlife. Depending on the focal length you need, it might be best to choose the lens first and then the body. It sounds as if you'd be happier with the D7200 which remains a very good choice.

    Hello! First of all, thank you for all the videos! I want to know if there is any problem with the 80D mainboard like in the firsts canon 70D. I am an owner of a Canon 70D (for two years and a half) and it was the best camera but recently out of nowhere it shot down and the technical people said that it was a common problemn of that model, a problem with the mainboard. It could be really helpful for me if you now something about that, if the 80D has problemns with the mainboard also. Thank you! I look forward your response.

Most cameras now will take from 1-10 shots at the end of the timer, to reduce the possibility that the image has one person with their eyes closed, etc.

    Hi
    I mostly use my camera for street photography and landscapes, i also do not record videos that much.
    i'm on a tight budget and cannot afford the full frame canon models, i already have 3 different Efs lenses from my rebel T3i and i think its time for an upgrade, would you recommend the 80d? will i notice a huge difference in terms of image quality if i upgrade to this model?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      It sounds like you're set. There is very little (if any) difference in image quality. The differences may be in focus speed or somewhat better low light capability - but for most photographers these are not really significant changes. While I realize it's nice to have the latest gear, I'd first ask what specifically the T3i is missing that you expect the 80D to provide. The biggest quality improvement you can likely make is to purchase a high quality lens - like an L series (with the red ring), but even there you'll have to look carefully at your photos to see the difference. I suspect if this was a major issue for you, you would not be here asking for my guidance.

      Yes. A brilliant review. I was experimenting with the M5 and the 80D for a couple of days, really great cameras, especially the M5, but they are so much crippled by the manufacturer vs Panasonic/Sony: no zebras, no MF Assist WHILE recording, no focus peaking (the M5 has and it's enough reason to pick the M5 vs the 80D), no 4K.

The issues would be - does it zoom smoothly enough; does it maintain focus as it zooms (I know it's not par focal, but how close is it? Pretty sure there are better resources than me to answer this question.

    Hello Maarten,
    Thank you for your reviews and videos. Very informative and helpful. I would like to ask for your advice on one topic, if possible. At the moment I shoot with the Nikon D3300 (mostly landscapes and night shoots). I am thinking about upgrading either to a Fujifilm X-T20 or a Canon 800D. I would very much appreciate your opinion on which camera you think it’s best as far as image quality (sharpness, dynamic range, and so). I have been watching a lot of Fuji reviews, and I really like the colors and sharpness of the X-T20. Can you give me your take on which one you think it’s best? I could also consider a 77D or 80D, but I think that since the sensor and processor are the same for all these 3 Canon, as far as image quality there should not be a great difference. Thank you in advance. Regards,
    Bruno Melo

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +2

      If you like the colours and sharpness of the X-T20, go with that. They can be equally good - but you will need better lenses than the kit for the Canon. As for colour reproduction, there is an element of personal taste, but with the settings and adjustments available in camera and in post, they can be very similar.

      I'm not sure what your needs are, but I feel that the 80D is a good choice for a majority of photographers. Yes, there are newer cameras, but unless you know you need those features (even faster AF, even higher ISO, even better burst) this is a solid mid-range performer.

    Great review, Maarten. I was curious about this new model, and you've covered it well. Overall, it looks like the 80D just has a little more of everything than my 60D, but I'm not sure any of the new features would make me move up. I do like the HDR modes, though, and not having to turn the mode dial to "movie" before shooting video is a real improvement. The touch screen, I can live without. Speaking of the mode dial, the one on my 60D actually has three more icons than the one on this camera -- so maybe they're going in the right direction ...

    I think you're guilty of a little bit of misinformation in this otherwise excellent review. At 7:27 the metering timer in menu screen 6 does not promise to customize the 4 seconds that the metering info is shown. What it does instead is customizing the time that the AE lock stays active. At 9:35 you state that pressing the info button cannot display a level. That must be because you haven't switched this function on in the menu. I was surprised to hear that you can't take stills while recording video, because you can do it on the older 70D (my camera). But it is true. And as it does make a hole in the video every time I do it, it isn't terribly useful anyway.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks. I did understand what it did, however I hoped that it would customize the display time - which it seemed to promise from the label. However, thanks for the tip on the level - completely missed that, my apologies. The 80D manual (p 302) states that shooting stills while recording video is not possible - you are right, although not completely useful, the 70D did sort of do this.

      The latest tech will just drive you to the most expensive top of the line cameras unnecessarily in my view, particularly for a beginner. Investing in good lenses is always better than buying expensive bodies. Although cameras continue to advance, cameras from the last 2 years or so remain excellent and powerful. Yes, you may sacrifice a few milliseconds in focus speed or a few burst frames per minute, but I suspect that even the pros have trouble appreciating these features. I have not reviewed the D5600, but I"m sure that, like its Nikon colleagues, it's an excellent camera.

    I borrowed my friend's 80D to check out its video quality. I was hoping for a poor man's C100, but the 80D isn't even close (actually shows just how nice those C100s are). Even with contrast turned down all the way I can barely tell a difference in the shadows. Agree, the touch screen auto-focus is really nice! Anyway, a shame Canon doesn't have flatter picture profiles. Panasonic still has the sharpest image with the nicest ability to change profiles/curves. Too bad MFT is small and the colors not red enough. Anyway, great video! THANKS! I was wondering where HDR video was, now, after your video I can try that. It's my last hope to get an image closer to the C100 ;)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      It is of course unfair to compare these two, as they do follow different product design requirements. And I agree, Panasonic's curves are a very desirable feature that offer lots of flexibility not found in static Log settings.
      However, starting with the neutral Picture Style, and then reducing the sharpness and saturation would be my recommendation. If you are losing detail in the shadows (and yes, as you see in my one-candle shot here, it's not the camera's best thing) I'd increase the exposure slightly and adjust the room's lighting to reduce the highlights. Hope this helps.

    What do you say about picture quality 700d vs 80d ? if I buy good lenses, still 700d better?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад +1

      I would say that the 24Mp resolution of the 80D makes it better, regardless of lens.

      Choose either, based on your wallet, how it fits your hand and which brand you prefer.

      I love nikon.... How bad d7500 focusing on video compare to 80d?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +1

      Then take the Nikon. As a consumer, you won't notice the difference. However, if you plant this thought in your mind it will haunt you, and might make the camera unbearable. No focus system is perfect, and they're all fast, using basically (in spite of what Canon's marketing would like you to believe) the same. All recent models get to their focus points quickly without hunting back and forth. There are very small differences, which may make the difference between a pro sports photographer getting the shot at a pro event - but that has little bearing on our day to day. Hope this helps.

    Canon 80D and Nikon D7200 which one is best for photography?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Both are excellent cameras in their class. The question you should ask is which is best for you, and only you can determine that.

    Wow, a load of useful info. You should consider making a video course for Udemy.

    When you go fast you assume people know these things earlier on. if they know they most probably will not watch this. If they do not know then like me I cannot really make use of the information. So please go slow if you wish to teach. In spite of all this I hit the like button appreciating your hard work.

      Thanks for your kind words. It is a review, not a tutorial - although I'm always happy to know that my videos are used to learn more about their cameras. RUclips provides captions and tools to slow me down, and you are of course welcome to watch as many times as you need.

    its heavy because you have a very long lens...please use kit lens so its light weight

      Hmmm, interesting thought - but in general terms, lens quality is directly proportional to weight.

      That depends on what you intend to do - stills or video; do you need a light camera for travel; do you have any existing investment in lenses ...

    Wait a sec, "top APS-C sized DSLR". Following Canon's own nomenclature that would be the 7D Mark II. Way better autofocusing system and also has DPAF. Other than that, superb review.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, sorry, that slipped out. I just don't think of that as a consumer camera, but it clearly is priced as one.

      I agree. It's not that old but the speed at which technology has advanced makes it easy to forget.
