Best g7x review I've seen. Very comprehensive. Subbed! Thank you 👍
That's very kind of you to say, thanks.
Holy crap! I feel I already know how to use this camera before it arrives today. Canon should send you a check! Thanks!
So glad to hear you found the information you needed - and thanks for the kind words.
same here!
Thank you for this review!
It's entirely my pleasure, thanks for commenting.
BEST review for this G7x Mark 2, very complete and detailed! Love it :D
I'm always appreciative of the kindness shown by my viewers, thanks!
Have been using this camera for more than a year now. Came across this very informative vdo a week ago and have started exploring my camera again.
This is by far the best vdo available for this camera and I bet you will discover new things worth exploring when you see this vdo.
Thanks a lot Maarten for your good work!
It was a real pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time.
Im taking this camera to a trip to japan this coming thursday and i found this video very helpful to learn the settings.
I'm so glad you took the time to comment - it's always nice to hear that my videos are useful.
The best g7x review I've seen thus far! Very easy to understand!
It's very nice of you to say, thanks for the kind words.
Martin, I am a faithful follower of your presentations, and as a Montrealer, I find you did wonders showing it to the world!
Thank you - that's very kind of you to say. There are three more videos coming that I recorded during that weekend.
Great video. Review videos like this are the best. I watched so many since the G7X Mark ii came out. Until I finally I decided to go ahead and get it for my daily vlogging needs. I’m happy with it. Love the bright colors but the sound could be a little better in noisy environments. Thanks for this video!
It's my pleasure, thanks for the kind words - it's always nice to have another owner's insight.
Ordered this Camera yesterday , will be a few weeks till it gets hear (Back ordered). This was an amazing review and will be back to watch again once my camera arrives! Thank you!!
It's always a pleasure to hear from a viewer who has found my video helpful.
Excellent overview, this could pass as an official manual video! Well done! :)
That is very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Such an elaborate and wonderfully made video! I can imagine the amount of time and effort required to come up with such high quality content. Best wishes to you ☺
What a pleasure to read your kind and thoughtful words - thanks for taking the time to comment. Of course, you're right, it does take time.
Was very glad to find this video. So many (pointless) unboxing video... so few actual reviews. Very in-depth and well done!
Thank you for taking the time to comment with such nice thoughts - I appreciate that.
Hi Marteen! I love your reviews! And this one is just as good as all the others! Always full of informations and nice pictures. Thanks and greetings from Italy :-)
I have fond memories of holidays in Italy - thanks for taking the time to comment, and your nice words. Always appreciated.
wow amazing video! thank you for taking the time to make this in depth, excellent review!
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Great review!! I’m deciding between this and Panasonic (eg lx100 or lx10 etc). One thing I use quite frequently on my current Panasonic point and shoot is the ability to take a photo DURING filming a video, as well as extracting a frame/image when playing back a video clip, in camera. (Not referring to Panasonic’s 4K photo modes that’s yet another set of useful features too). I can’t seem to find either of these two features on the Canon? Canons ND filter and Stabilisation appear to be very good here though:)
It is not a common feature - the issue being that the best shutter speed for video (1/60) rarely yields good photos. Check out Sony's RX 100 series, which also includes this capability (they call it dual record).
Hey, it's Calla's dad! :) Nice to see you on RUclips here. Great channel!
You're breaking my cover! Thanks for the kind words.
Haha!! ;) Keep up all that great work.
Very informative video. I got my G7x mii used last week and already love using it when not in the mood to carry dslr or mirrorless body.
Thanks for your kind words.
Subscribed!! One of the best reviews I've seen about the g7x. Thank you :)
That's very kind, thanks for commenting.
Thanks for another great review Maarten. I always look forward to your detailed and concise reviews.
I appreciate both the kind words and your interest. I'll do my best to maintain your confidence.
Im convinced! Especially as you included video of the Bagel shop on St Viateur! I owned the G7X original, and didnt like it a lot, but this version seems to have addressed many of my original peevs.
I'll have to remember to include bagel shops in my future videos - thanks for commenting.
As always, a superbly presented review. Thank you! In Europe you can currently buy the G7XII for far, far less than any of its rivals, including the LX10/LX100/ZS100 and ZS200, as it has been heavily discounted at some stores. This makes it a very compelling choice, and the bonus confirmed by your review, is the outstanding and class-leading video quality and stabilization.
Thanks for the kind words, always nice to hear that I've provided useful information to help make a decision.
Wow amazing in depth review. Well done, thanks for posting.
I'm humbled by your praise - thanks for commenting.
Thanks maarten, you have worked hard to make this review and this is very helpful, I like your style..still keep working, maarten I'm still support you, GOOD JOB!
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks very much.
This review was the most helpful review I've seen on this camera. Thank you so much!
How kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Fantastic review! You worked very hard on this and it shows!
Your thoughtful comments are very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks for sharing, I love your video, it was really helpful!!!!!
I'm currently looking around for a new camera, stuck between Canon G7X II, Sony RX100 III...
and after watching your review, I decided to buy Canon G7X II :)
It was a pleasure to read your kind words - it's always nice to know that I've provided useful information. I think that's a good choice. Best wishes and happy shooting!
Agreed, great review. You're the only one that ever mentioned that the flash tilts for bounce.
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting. I do try to be thorough.
the best reviews on cameras on RUclips.....kindly do a 3 months or 6 months review after using a product aswell.....people would love that......i would love that :)
Thanks for your kind words. I wish that were possible, but the cameras are on loan from the manufacturer and three weeks is about as long as they'll lend them.
I bought this camera after this review, thank you for such holistic review. My only issue is that despite moderate usage, a lot of dust has gotten inside the lens. Anyone else facing same problem?
Inside the lens? Seems odd for a sealed unit.
FANTASTIC REVIEW! Thanks for putting this movie together. Now if only I could find a Mark II available in the U.S.
Thanks for the kind words. Have you checked the B&H affiliate shopping link in the description below the video?
I didn't notice but I'll check it out.
Best wishes
Thanks for this great review especially for the hybrid auto explanation. I can now use this feature to make a nice diary of my day without a lot of random shots
I appreciate your kind words. It's always nice to hear that I've helped viewers make better use of their cameras.
@@MaartenHeilbron Your reviews are where I go first when I am contemplating a camera purchase.
I'm honoured to be so highly regarded - thank you very much!
wow! i didn't know this camera had so many features! Great video! ..
Always nice to hear that you've found my videos useful. Thanks for the kind words.
I have been watching loads of these videos and this is the best so far well done....
That’s very kind of you to say, thanks.
Excellent! Going to take this camera with me to Peru in November. Thanks.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Send photos!
Excellent comprehensive review, subbed!
Thanks! I appreciate your comments and the subscription.
Thanks for review , i just buy one. I think this is best review on YT of Canon G7X mark II , very helpfull. Keep continue , great job !
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Great review, I enjoyed it except for the end where, for a while, the camera preferred to focus on the tree instead. I need assistance though.
I'm torn between the RX100, LX100, and this. I'm a casual photographer and I want to upgrade my camera (...my smartphone), and so I have limited budget but I can still buy either three. I will mostly shoot photos indoors more than outdoors, but I will be recording videos a lot outdoors and occasionally "vlogging" indoors. I mostly value an articulating screen, and I don't find the absence of an EVF troubling. Is the RX100/LX100 worth paying over the G7X II, or is the G7X II _enough_?
The G7X is enough, although the flash is of limited range for interiors, it does bounce up for a nicer look. Perfect for vlogging, but indoors make sure you have sufficient lighting.
***** Ah, if I were to take low-light photos will it fare well? I won't be hit too hard when it comes to video lighting because I won't do much in the dark anyways, but it'd still be nice if it takes decent/usable photos in low light. Thanks for your response!
This wouldn't be my first choice for low light - with the same one-inch sensor and form factor, my preference would be the Sony RX100m3/4. I found the Canon (as you see in some of the images) gets a little grainy/noisy in low light. Video is about the same in low light - but check out the details on dpreview, who does more in-depth than I can.
***** Alright thanks for the suggestions!
Always my pleasure.
Excellent review! Best I have seen till now. Well done.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
A very comprehensive review thanks. I was going to buy this until I saw the Nikon DL cameras. I just couldn't bring myself to buy a camera without 4K.
Always my pleasure - thanks for the kind words. I'm anxiously awaiting for the DL cameras to arrive for review - I hear the backlog from the earthquake is nearly resolved.
Really great production quality. Cuts and flow are pleasing. The script content and narration is top notch. thanks for a great review. It helped me decide to buy the G7x ii.
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thank you very much for commenting.
Fantastic review, Maarten ! I just purchased this camera yesterday and luckily found this video... you have pointed out some very interesting and important features.
Which mode(s) would you suggest that I shoot sunsets with (stills and video) for the most enhancement but also look natural ?
Thanks for the kind words, I do appreciate them. The AUTO mode should detect orange hues in the sky and automatically detect a sunset (icon in the upper left) - which is likely the preferred in-camera effect.
If you're shooing in other modes, I think that setting Picture Style to Auto is likely your best bet. I would save images in both RAW and JPEG, so that if I'm not happy with the JPEG, I'd work with the image in Lightroom to make adjustments to the image to obtain the effect I wanted. Hope this helps.
wow this is very complete review i ever watch in youtube about g7x mark 2, thank you so much sir. anyway i have a question about rigging noise issue in autofocus, can we get good autofocus without getting the noise from the lens ? thanks in advance
Thanks for the kind words. I didn't hear any autofocus noise - maybe it was always noisy when I was recording?
thanks for your reply, but in your video i didnt hear any rigging noise, but in some review in another channel i hear definitely
Hmmm .... is there a specific autofocus mode that's causing the issue, or is it a defect in some cameras?
Your video really helped to get a quick start with my camera. Thank you!
That's great to know, thanks for the kind words.
You did such a great job on the Canon Mark II awesome really awesome thank you for sharing
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
which one is better value for money, g7x ii or the RX100 iii ? i am still deciding between those two.... great video!
That probably depends on the price in your neighbourhood, and what you want to shoot. Or whether you want a viewfinder. Both are great cameras.
Best review of the G7x ii i've found, most helpful and really helped me make a decision :) Thank you!
It's always a pleasure to hear I've been able to help. Thanks for your kind words.
I've been looking for a compact camera to take on family holidays instead of my Canon 5d MkII + 24-70 lens and i reckon this is definitely it :) Cheers
Thanks for taking the time to comment, always nice to hear I've been able to help.
Wonderful review again!! This review helped me decide this over the RX100 mark iii
Thank you for your kind words, always nice to hear that I've been able to provide useful information.
One of the best reviews I have seen. Thanks
Very kind of you to say, thanks.
Hello Maarten, hat's off to you, this is how reviews should be done! I own a Fuji X70 which is absolutely fantastic, but I need another camera with limited zoom capability that will also do video (which is horrible in the Fuji). On my shortlist are also the Sony RX100 mark V and possibly the Panasonic LX10/15. I love to shoot portraits, especially in B&W; which camera of these would you recommend, especially from a bokeh perspective? Which camera would be most suitable for limited DOF? They all have 1 inch sensors with about the same sensitivity, but I would expect the Canon to excel, with its longer focal range. What do you think? Appreciate in advance your reply. Best from Holland.
Veel bedankt voor uw vriendelijk commentaar. (How bad is my dutch?) I've not had the opportunity to compare side by side, and am waiting for my review unit of the LX10 - which I kind of suspect might be the better choice - particularly as (on most models anyway) their video functions are superior. You might check with dpreview for bokeh examples, but browsing for pictures from those models on flickr is another option. Hope this helps.
Would you prefer this one or the Panasonic Lx 10? 4K is not a must and the price of them do not vary much in my place. Which one is better in terms of image quality, auto focus and color? Thank you so much!
Although you may have a preference depending on your appreciation of the two camera's in camera JPEG processing, as they use similar (if not identical) sensors, the quality is about the same. I think that Panasonic's autofocus is more flexible - but the speed difference is minor. Either is a good choice, both offer an interesting set of advanced features which, if you intend to use them, might make your decision. Otherwise, as I typically suggest, let your wallet, your hand and your heart decide.
Thank you very much for your advice!
Always my pleasure
Great Video!!! Between this camera and the Sony Rx100III, what do you prefer? So I see Sony has nothing to envy this new product from Canon. Greetings from Venezuela.
Thanks for the kind words - both are nice, depending on specific features I could be happy with either. Canon's feature set is full of interesting capabilities if you're willing to take the time to learn and practice using them. I have a small instinctive preference for the viewfinder on the Sony, but I do find I don't use it as much as I think I would on a small camera.
Hey Thanks Maaten, great instructional. Have bookmarked it for later use. Cheers! David btw, what is the LONGEST exposure range, especial for astrophotography. Thanks again VERY MUCH!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Four minutes and sixteen seconds (according to the manual, I didn't check).
Finally a good review! What would be a good portrait setting for photographing my son with a little bokeh? 😉
Finally indeed. Try zooming in and using aperture priority with a large aperture like F4.
Hello Marteen! I have the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark 2 camera, and while I am zooming with the lens ring, it's very slow, and if I do zoom quickly, it can't zoom, and while I'm rotating the lens ring, sometimes it get stuck, if i don't do that slowly. Is it normal or is it a factory defect?
Not the lens ring get stuck, only the zoom stops
Not normal, sounds like you need to take it in for exchange or repair.
It's working fine for me, but It's only unusual. if I zoom with the lens ring, it's not the same as with the Sony A5100 (for example).
It has got a little delay, and if I zoom and suddenly zoom back, sometimes it's not zooming.
And when recording a video, the zoom is very slow. (I rotate the lens ring quickly, but the zoom is slow.)
Are you sure it's not normal? So you mean when I'm recording, the zoom must be as quick as I'm rotating the lens ring, as the Sony A5100?
There's a little lag, but what you seem to be describing is unusual.
Can I send you an email with a video how it works for me, and can you please identify if it's a problem, or it's normal? maarten.heilbron@gmail.com is okay?
Fantastic review! Ordered mine on Amazon. Can't wait!
Thanks for the kind words, glad I was able to help with your decision.
Would you consider doing a comparison between the G7X m2 (Canon) and the R100 V (Sony)? Looks like G7x gives everything BUT fast motion capture capability and autofocus issues. Do you think Canon will release a software update to fix the autofocus glitches?
I would consider that - but I'd have to try to arrange for the loan of both at the same time. As for software updates - one can always hope, but Canon seems a little aggressive with software updates than their competitors.
I was looking for a good but compact travel vlogging camera when I stumbled upon the first G7X. However, when the mark II came out with improved features and whatnot, I got more interested in it. I've been using my phone (Nexus 5 and recently Nexus 5X) for my videos and pictures and, while the quality is great and all, it's taking up a lot of space on my phone and I'd much prefer having a digital camera anyway.
I was wanting to know if you think this would be a good camera for mainly videos of scenery and vlogs, with the occasional photo. If you think that another camera would be better or just as good, let me know because I'm open to suggestions!
The G7X II is as good as any and better than most. If you're interested in waiting, the Nikon DL series cameras may appeal, if not, consider the Panasonic LX100 (ruclips.net/video/_Lhsrc9oG5U/видео.html) or the Sony RX100IV (ruclips.net/video/Cp3OGF-Pho4/видео.html) or RX100V (review in progress). They have slightly different features, but all are equally capable.
However, if you really want to vlog, and be on camera while you shoot, the search for the ideal mirrorless camera with mic in, good wide angle, flip screen - remains elusive, unless you're prepared to lug the Canon 5Ti DSLR around.
I know it's a common comment, but when i see a heilborn video it's an instant thumbs up...
It may be common, but it's always a pleasure for me to read. Thanks!
Maarten, a very good review! Thank you, jos
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi Maarten, thanks so much for the in-depth review! How do you rate the image quality on this camera? I'm sold on the video and zoom range but question the sensor size. I'm looking for a decent balance of video quality and photo quality with manual control, something that makes having a camera in addition to an iphone worthwhile. I've worked with APS sensors (fantastic IQ for stills but too big or too expensive) and micro four-thirds (okay IQ but desired lenses get too bulky and are beyond my price range).
If image quality is your concern, and you're used to APS-C, you will find the one-inch sensor to be a compromise. That said, I've taken many great photos with one inch sensors, that hold up well even with enlargement to wall size.
I like that! to take a photograph" instead of a image" nice review' nice camera, always better than a phone,
Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate the kind words.
I can't understand how anyone can give this awesome review a thumbs down. +Maarten is freaking awesome.
Just hearing you speak, just makes me want to be your grandson or son haha, is that weird?
Thanks, but yes, kinda weird. But thanks, your kind words are appreciated.
Great review. I'm still have trouble deciding which would be the right compact camera for me. More interested in photography vs video. I think I'm down to the Canon G7X II or the Panasonic Lumix 10. Thanks again for the review , I just subscribed and look forward to more of your reviews.
Thanks for the kind words, sounds like a difficult choice, both would be good, depending on your specific needs.
One of the best reviews . Super !
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for the kind words.
I'm really struggling deciding between this camera, one of the Sony RX100, or the Canon Powershot G9X. Do you know how much of an improvement you get in picture quality between the G9X and G7X II? I'm trying to decide if it's worth the extra size and weight for someone who is just going to put it in auto for vacation pictures
I have not reviewed the G9X, so can't comment - check dpreview or cnet. Under those circumstances, I would primarily consider sensor size as the determining quality factor (although the lens will play a role also). These three all use the same nominal "one-inch" sensor, so likely not much difference.
***** Thank you!
GREAT WORK Maarten. Thank you. This is what review should be, samples samples samples, not just a guy sitting and holding switched off camera. Have a great day! :D
Thanks for your kind words - I appreciate the time you took to comment.
Detailed review ! Love it ! There's no need to read the manual hahahahahha
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. The manual always useful if you are having trouble falling asleep.
Very nice and enlightening review. I´m thinking of getting me a small camera like this to use on a daily base when traveling. I have a Nikon D750. Do you think that the Nikon DL 24-85 is similar to the Canon G7X II ?
Inasmuch as it has a one inch sensor, yes. I've asked to review the DL24-85, but the review unit isn't available yet.
Hello! I have a problem here! My g7x mark ll produce a clicking noise whenever it is auto focus! And this is during the auto mood! Isit normal? ):
That doesn't sound right. How loud is the noise? Is it visibly hunting for focus while it's making the noise?
Maarten Heilbron is not really though! Is like the lens area you can feel abit of vibration?
A slight whirring or vibration is normal in continuous focus, depending on what the camera is pointed at.
Thanks for the good review . I’m looking for something between my old Canon ELPH 520hs , which underperforms in low light , and my Nikon DSLR. It must be small for camping and riding. This Canon looks good however it seems to put high priority on the video , and to be aimed at Vloggers in particular.
I seldom if ever even use video so now I think there is a better camera that fits the siZe and price of this Canon yet puts higher priority on still images and other features such including a hot shoe and USB recharge.
What do you think ? Perhaps this Canon is the only one that fits my requirements ? Thanks much !
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. I'd consider the Fuji X-T20 ruclips.net/video/seokdJwXjTs/видео.html as an alternate. It's a little bigger, but it has an APS-C sensor - and offers interchangeable lenses. In my opinion Fuji's entry level lenses are better than average. As for video, although both are video-capable, Canon (with HD only) and Fuji (limited record time) they really would not be anyone's choice.
If size is the issue, the Sony RX100 series: ruclips.net/video/GcNa_eFTzkk/видео.html is similar - and is even more limited for video.
thanks very much Maarten. I hadn't thought of the the Fuji entry level series and will check them out at the local camera store. Living in Japan does offer me better prices than I would have seen in Canada so the X-T20 may well be within my budget here. Cheers.
Always happy to help.
Well you did it Maarten. I went out and ordered the G7x yesterday. I think its a perfect happy medium for a place between my tiny ELPH520 and Nikon DSLR. Thanks again for the correspondence on this, and the very useful and accessible review.
Thanks for the kind words, I'm happy to hear you've made your decision, and I'm always happy to help.
Thank you for your comprehensive reviews! I'm currently looking around for a new camera - stuck between Canon G7X II, Sony RX100 III, and Fujifilm X70 - and was hoping you could help me. I am a beginner who's really interested to learn, so I would like the option for manual controls - hence the three cameras. I will be using it while traveling (taking pictures of landscapes, architecture, and of friends and family). I'd like for it to have good fast motion capture capability, decent low light pictures and good quality images even in full auto mode. Image quality is more important for me than the video quality. Which do you think is the best choice? Other camera suggestions are welcomed too :D
All three are good choices - so I generally advise that one should choose with the wallet (price), the hand (how it feels) and the heart - which one is most appealing to you on abstract terms like brand, design and pride of ownership. No good owning a camera everyone else thinks is great if you're not in love with it.
If you are interested in learning and improving your technical photography skills, the Fuji models make access to the basic exposure controls more clear and direct, so that would be my preference.
Maarten Heilbron Actually leaning towards the IQ of the Fuji but worried about the prime lens. Thank you so much for your reply!
Unless you're planning to do wildlife or sports photography (where you'll need a longer lens that the G7X offers), I think you'll find the prime lens to be plenty versatile - as many photographers prior to the invention of the zoom lens in the previous millennium did. "Zoom with your feet."
Great in depth analysis!
Just a quick question- I am only looking for best still image quality in the G7X MII price range, other features and video quality r not imp for me. Is this camera the one or r there better alternatives?
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting. In the same class are the Sony RX100 series (certainly don't need to get the latest version - M3: ruclips.net/video/PMcYrkyJyjI/видео.html; M4 ruclips.net/video/Cp3OGF-Pho4/видео.html; M5 ruclips.net/video/GcNa_eFTzkk/видео.html, and the Panasonic LX100 ruclips.net/video/_Lhsrc9oG5U/видео.html.
Thanks for the advice!
I actually require a camera for family trip photos only. Easy to use and carry, with high resolution pics. I dont require extra features like 4K video, electronic viewfinder, etc.
Would love it if u could please recommend one amongst these cameras.
The G7X (I or II) is a good choice.
Thanks a lot!
Hello Maarten, do you recommend getting a CPL filter for this camera? I want to use the camera daily, but I'm afraid dust will get in the lens more easily. Another reason is that I've heard that the plastic things that open and close break really fast, I thought a filter might protect it against that. I was thinking of buying a CARRY SPEED MAGFILTER POLARIZER FILTER 42MM for the camera.
Your video was the best I've seen on the G7X mk ii. thank you!
If you want to protect the front of the lens from getting scratched and possibly damaged, use a UV filter, they're cheaper and won't cause the kind of artifacts that a polarizer might. I'm not sure that lenses need protection from dust. I'm not sure that you can protect this, or any camera, from the fact that plastic things have a tendency to wear out. However, I suspect from your note that you're the kind of person who looks after their things, so if I were you I would just treat the camera with the same care that your give to your other possessions - like your phone - and maybe get a case so it's easier to carry and doesn't get bumped so easily. Hope this helps.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for your answer! I've subsribed. :)
Always happy to help, and to welcome a new subscriber - thanks!
Hi Maarten.
Great channel and great review of this camera. Nice to see all the little extra features you've highlighted.
I'm trying to decide on a compact travel camera for an upcoming European cycling vacation. I think I've got it narrowed down to the G7X MII or the Panasonic ZS100. I've shot Canon almost all my life (all the way back to the A1), and currently have 3 (plus 1 I'm trying to sell) so I think I know my way around them pretty well.
The longer reach of the ZS100 is appealing, along with some of the features tied into the 4K (i.e. post focus) but it's a slower lens, and, from what I've read, perhaps a little soft compared to the Canon. I wish the G7X had an EVF, although if I had to choose, I'd probably take the G7X's tilt screen over Panasonic's EVF.
Do you have any experience with the ZS100 that you could offer to help me make a more informed decision?
Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words - where are you cycling? We've had some nice cycling adventures along the Canal du Midi and the Danube. I'd usually had a Sony RX100 model in my jersey - and was very happy with the results. With apologies, I have no experience with the ZS100.
Maarten Heilbron we're starting with a bike and barge from Amsterdam to Bruges, followed by a self guided tour from Pisa to Florence, with a couple of days in Paris in between. Do you think the G7X would perform as well as the Sony? Pricewise, I'd have to compare it with the RX100 III.
Sounds like a great trip. Yes, the G7X and the RX100-3 are roughly comparable. As a Canon fan, take the G7X.
Hi, I appreciated your videos , I have a question , what do you think is better for photos canon g7x or nikon 1 j5? Thank you
Personally, I prefer the G7X as its controls are simpler to use. On the other hand, if you're going to be shooting in auto, I'm probably indifferent, both good. So then, as I like to suggest, choose with your wallet; your hand - which fits/feels better; and your heart - which will you be proud to own. Best wishes.
Another highly accomplished fact-packed review. Thanks!
I was pleased to read your kind words, thanks!
Hello Sir, nice review! One question thou, how's your autofocus working? Mine looks a little bit terrible...
Thanks so much for your kind words, appreciated. I returned the camera after the review, so have no further experience to relate other than what you see in the video. Autofocus performance is often related to the amount of available light - in low light situations, autofocus will be slower and more hesitant.
Yeah I know that, I was only trying to understand if mine is broken (and in need of substitution) or if that's a problem that affects this series. Thank You anyway!
I was able to grab bits of this video that apply to the Canon G5 X MII which is simmilar somewhat but not really... There isn't one single good tutorial on RUclips for my camera. Thanks for this video which was helpful for some of the settings.
Glad I could help! Sorry you were not able to find better resources, but Canon (in Canada anyway) is making it difficult to impossible to borrow a camera to review.
@@MaartenHeilbron That is really too bad, because so many of us depend on reviews and tutorials!
Understood. At the risk of being impertinent, what are you doing to support the RUclips creators whose reviews and tutorials you depend on?
@@MaartenHeilbron I wasn't being disrespectful to you... I meant it's too bad Canon is making it difficult to borrow a camera to review. I very much appreciate you and the other great people who do reviews and tutorials on RUclips! I support them by always recognizing them by commenting and giving them the "likes".If you mean financial support then perhaps I'm coming up short as I don't have the means to be donating any $$. Sorry for the confusion.
No worries, thanks for the kind words.
Great video sir. Really well detailed :) I just wish I could afford for a camera.
Thanks for the kind words, I wish you could too.
great video, subbed. been thinking of this camera to add to my arsenal but not sure yet. i only shoot canon.
I appreciate your kind words, thank you. Shoot ... arsenal ... canon ... should I be worried? :-)
no you're fine ;)
Thanks.
one of the best review presentation
Thanks, it was a pleasure to read your kind words.
how about this compare to the LX100 ? I really like Lx100 for sharp photos and qualitied 4k video, but I like the size of the Canon g7xm2 and I heard that the G7X mark2 has better af in the lowlight than LX100... What do you suggest me to buy ? I like shooting street photography and I like some nice bokeh ? I don't know which one is better ?
Some advantage to the LX100 for the larger micro four thirds sensor, but really, I'd base the decision on the cost, the feel in your hand and your perception of the camera - which looks better, which brand suits you better.
Thank you so much for the video. Are you still using this camera? What is your take on its newer sibling g5x mark ii ?
No, I returned it after I did the review. I'd love to review the M II, but Canon has suspended their Canadian reviewer loan program for now.
Hi! Does canon g7x mark ii good for daily photography? Or fujifilm xa3 has much more good picture quality? Thank you in advance!
I would always recommend the camera with the larger sensor, for daily or nightly photography (that's the X-A3).
Maarten Heilbron thank you!
always my pleasure
Excellent review! I have a couple of questions: a) I already own the camera and have a big issue in control. I constantly accidently push the drive mode button (maybe while pressing the Q Set button), and ended taking pictures with this future that is unecesarry if you only want to take one shot at a time. Can you tell me please is there is a way to lock this future? b) In the presets modes I noticed that lacks a landscape mode, is there a way to have a preset for this type of situation?. Thanks for all!
There are two ways to access continuous shooting - in auto if you hold the shutter down it will continue to fire. Or select continuous from the top of the control ring. As well there are some scene modes that automatically trigger continuous mode. Other than setting the burst speed, I don't see any controls, nor any way to lock out the control dial from accidentally changing settings - but I agree, with a small control area, it's nearly inevitable that something gets jostled and you wind up with a setting you didn't intend.
For landscape, there's no auto colour mode but you can use a mode like vivid to punch up the colours for landscapes. Or create your own using the custom colour settings.
Hope this helps.
Hello sir! I need help choosing a cam for traveling and sometimes family occasions. My first choice is canon g7x ii bec it's a light weight camera. However i stumbled upon Sony ILCE5100 which comes with two lenses (SELP1650 and SEL 55-210) and here in our country they're almost the same price. I want to take good pictures and videos as well. I'm really thinking on where to put my money bec these cams are expensive and i'm probably gonna use it for years. And btw should i be concern that Sony ILCE5100 is an older model? And is there an alternative cams that you can recommend? How about fujifilm xa3? Thank you and i'm happy that I saw your reviews! Subbed!!!
I would recommend the Sony A6000 over the A5100 - it's certainly worth the small extra cost. But the G7X is nice and small, and really travels easily. Granted the sensor is small, but I have not found that to be an issue. If you just want a "point and shoot" style camera - the G7X has that covered, with some features that elevate it out of that class.
A great extensive review of a product i am interested in. You can review a tea kettle and make it with enthusiasm
While I appreciate your kind words, I'm not sure about a tea kettle ...
I usually shoot Raw with my APSC mirrorless camera, but I want to shoot Jpegs with this Canon since I heard that the Jpeg engine has been improved. I heard that the default sharpness is extreme and to bring it down a notch in the color settings. Did you find that to be true? Also, I heard that the noise reduction should be kept low. I shoot mostly stills, not much video.
All of the settings that affect JPEGs (like sharpness, nr, etc.) are personal preference. What seems extreme to some is preferred by others. I recommend you adjust the settings based on your preferences. Of course, if you shoot RAW+JPEG, you'll still have the option to adjust at your PC.
Good day sir. I would just like to know which of these cameras would you prefer, G7x Mark 2 or the Sony rx100 Mark 3? Since you have reviewed both cameras. I am torn between this two gadgets. I can't decide which to buy. Ty
If you feel that there is no feature that distinguishes one from the other for you, I'd take the G7X II..
Maarten Heilbron thank you so much sir
always my pleasure
i always like your reviews sir. very detail, and objective. Thank You for the reviews.
i have 1 question. which one to buy ? the canon g7x II or the panasonic lumix LX-100. ?
I appreciate your kind words, thanks! Both are fine cameras, I might be slightly swayed by the larger sensor in the LX100 - but if there are no specific features offered by one and not the other, I'd be guided by the size of your wallet and your hand. Then I'd let your heart make the decision - which is the one you'd be proudest to be seen with, and would never be left behind?
It looks like this camera is available to buy again. For video would you still consider this camera a viable option in 2020. Or does the sony zv1 make the g7x ii outdated? Also, I noticed the onboard mic on the zv1sounds more "tinny" than the canon. Which onboard mic do you prefer?
Thanks
I don't think it is outdated, but as you point out, there are better options out there. Do watch my review of the ZV1 first: ruclips.net/video/31DjYylopSg/видео.html
Hello! Thank you so much for the review. I am currently looking for a new camera for recording video and can't choose between Canon G7x and G7X Mark II. Considering the new features, do you think Mark II is worth the extra money spent?
Always my pleasure. It depends on your needs, if you won't use them, don't spend the money.
Thank you for this excellent review. i'm searaching for a pocket camera to travel, and i'm between this one and an iPhone X. Do you think the smarphone can replace this camera ? (i would use it basically for daylight landscapes) Thanks in advance
While all of the cameras reviewed on my channel would be able to replace a smartphone, there is no phone, not even the iPhone X , that I would consider a suitable replacement for a camera. However, unless you are aware of what you're missing, you are likely to be satisfied with the photos from an iPhone X under those conditions.
Fantastic review---very helpful. Thank you! :)
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!
Hi, thanks for the video do you ever leave a video for your settings when making a video on this camera?
Thanks for your kind words. Although I sometimes do, I did not for this camera.
thx for sharing, can u give me an update how's your canon after 1year? how about battery life
Thanks for your kind words. I don't have an update, as I returned the Canon to camera after the review (it was on loan to do the review, as are most of the cameras in my videos)
Excellent job. You really put some work into that.
Thank you, I appreciate your observation and kind words.
Thanks for this video, very informative, I found it most helpful.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks.
Premium compacts are a tricky category for me. More convenient than a DSLR, better quality than a point and shoot. However, how does the camera stack up against modern phones?
For most people, a recent model high quality phone is as good as a premium compact in most situations. However, what you'll find is that, with a larger sensor and a better lens as well as a greater set of controls and features that the camera (like the G7X reviewed here) are more capable in low light, have an optical zoom, can provide better control over depth of field (for defocussed backgrounds) and have other features, which differ from model to model, that even the latest smartphone models don't have.
Very comprehensive, Maarten. And exactly the response I was looking for. Thank you. Really enjoyed the video. In fact, out of hours of combing through videos, yours is one of the only reviews that I've seen on RUclips that offers realistic, every day examples of how the camera could be used. There are many reviews as to why this particular camera is a good choice for vlogging. But truly, a camera should and can be used for so much more. Subbed!
I appreciate the kind words and the subscription. Always happy to help.
