I agree that having an ND filter helps with keeping down diffraction to a minimum. I took an RX100 camera w/o an ND filter when hiking in the mountains and found that even at ISO 100 I had to stop down the aperture to keep from blowing highlights. I would not purchase a compact camera w/o a built-in ND filter unless it had a filter thread for a polarizer. I have owned several Canon cameras and I did like their menu system better than the Sony cameras I own. I wish that the menu systems would be changable to a red color like the Canon M5 does for night shooting.

Close, but we really want to see these new Canons vs the RX100 series. G5Xii was more intuitive than my RX100 in the store but felt substantially cheaper. Really interested in a comparison of the lens quality.

Yeah, the main thing I want to see addressed is whether the new lens is sharper and producing better results than the old one, and most reviewers are not talking about that.

@@wickedhouston5538 i doubt tbh, i found everything i wanted in the menu of my rx100 VA in the first day of using it (first time sony user). i had a canon before that one, and its 24mp aps-c sensor sucked compared to this one inch sensor, much better low light, and the zeiss 24-70mm is far more sharper and contrasty and even beats it in color to the 22mm canon lens i used, i bought it used and it came with the sticky grip on and it feels superb to hold on to, it has all the customization that lacked in my canon and a lot more. i feel more like canon loses every single time. specially with that contrast detect sensor showing its age...

Thanks for yet another great and entertaining review. One addition to USB charging. I was pretty disappointed and also asked Canon support here in Germany. They weren't very helpful. What I found out was that it's not the power but a new(er) technology called PD (power direct) USB Charging using USB Type C cables. I bought a rather cheap 12V car charger with PD (recognizable by the extra Type C plug) and it works like a charm. Also a power bank that includes this technology works. The best part is: I figured out that it also charges my EOS R. So it's actually great but Canon should make clear that USB charging requires PD enabled chargers.

From a photo perspective, I'd go with the Canon. The controls and faster lens really make up for the disparity in tech. However, I'd be interested see if there are any optical improvements with the new lens of the g5x II. The original lens, which I'm guessing is the same on all the G7X line, was quite soft at the wide end, and I'm the sort of person that generally doesn't do a lot of pixel peeping. Hopefully these new lens is an improvement.

I am looking to buy a new camera and am stuck between the advance compact cameras like Canon G series or Sony RX 100s and Canon M50 or Sony A6000.
Can you elaborate on why these cameras are more expensive than interchangeable lens cameras like Canon EOS M50 or Sony a6000 although the later have bigger sensors, better auto-focus ability, etc. Essentially, I want to understand what I am paying for when going for the G series cameras apart from size. Because, when I looked at the specs, I am getting a smaller camera, but the sensor size is also smaller...

Why can't Canon produce a genuinely small photographer's camera with a viewfinder and good controls, leaf shutter and flash? Hotshoe, evf or hybrid ovf, small zoom or even better 35mm prime and aps-c like the x100 series or griii with crop. Trouser pocketable. ub-c. Go Canon....

Canon G5 X was very close to what you described, but its older sensor but for its age its actually hold up really well and the lens is very sharp, overall image quality should be comparable to RX100 M7 and these newer stacked sensors, even in low light its very impressive indeed.

  • @cinemenico
    @cinemenico 5 лет назад +6

Thing is... Sony traded the sensitivity in for range... which I find a bad move and doesn't make it an enthusiast camera anymore... and the regular Joe will find it too expensive. A premium compact is supposed to be an alternative to a mirrorless or DSLR, not having to carry around all the equipment, just having the little all-in-one camera that gets results that are quite close, e.g. in terms of lowlight sensitivity, shallow depth of field, dynamic range, color richness, etc. For the times where you haven't any photography targets set for the day, but will be happy to have it on you when the oppertunity arrises and will be a better tool for better results than your smartphone. I had high hopes for the LX100 Mark II. The original was their first premium compact in that form factor with 4/3" sensor. You'd think there's much to improve on someone's first try at something and there definitely was! But the update was so lacklustre, it seems they're not even trying to compete with Sony and Canon is this market segment! What a shame. That could've been 'the one'. So... really all that remains is Canon... and they know it, they know that they can just go do what they want with it. So, as cameraconspiracies would elude to... the Canon cripple hammer strikes again! Worse C-AF than even the previous iterations and no 24p to name a few. At least I suppose it's user friendly, does come with an ND-filter built-in, does livestreaming, have a 3.5mm input etc. But boy... why ruin what could've been a fine camera?
It's times like these that I wish Nikon would've put in a little more effort to realize their 1" premium compact DL line-up of cameras. Because between the RX100 VII, LX100 Mark II and G7 X Mark III/G5 X Mark II, there isn't really one that's great. Maybe if Sony releases a RX100, but with the VA lens and keeping it under a 1000 bucks... or Panasonic releasing an LX200.

The touch shutter is good for redundancy. It is good that there are few single components that turns the camera useless if they fail.

One Inch sensor's still image and video quality usually can satisfy most of the casual user. If you are not into vlog (fixed screen, non-flip) or wanted new function but better zoom range, for new user in camera you can consider Panasonic ZS100 (TZ110) optical zoom range 250mm + dynamic zoom + digital zoom get a total 1440mm in 4k. Try luck on second hand for cheap price for start learner. Only sacrifice low light video quality a little bit (still image ok). Until you know more about camera and tend to upgrade year or years later then consider a updated camera to your new expectations.

(Besides, a smartphone being the ergonomic disaster that it is, I only use its camera in emergencies).

This was very informative for me. This will be my first camera purchase ever and just wanted a nice camera for photos during me and my lady’s vacations. I will be picking up the canon G7 X Mark III and see what comes of it. Seems more of a stand still vlogging camera but I am hoping it will be good for parades and other fun events.

Have you tried using update 1.1.0?
    www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/point-and-shoot-digital-cameras/advanced-cameras/powershot-g5-x-mark-ii?subtab=downloads-firmware
●Mode 1 (newly added, with firmware version 1.1.0): This mode supports quick and responsive autofocus. Use this autofocus mode when you want the camera to be sensitive to tracking the subject, and for situations when the photographer is moving (such as shooting while walking).

So those mini cameras get crop less 4K and 1080p120 while my eos r is not capable of this? Maybe with the next firmware update...

Getting 4k from a 1 inch sensor is way different than getting 4k from a full frame sensor.

Such a bummer! It's like their interpretation of the RX100 IV a few years too late! With the infamous Sony overheating even. And how the heck can you do worse C-AF than previous iteration? You're Canon, the go-to brand for no0bz that want a point-n-shoot and the basics done right. Man... they better come out with a firmware update addressing the poor C-AF (Panasonic did it), adding 24p (Olympus did it on the E-M1) and raise the overheating threshod (like Sony did). Clicky ring? What about MF? And why oh why didn't the G7 X Mark III get the same lens as the G5 X Mark II? Why didn't the G5 X Mark II keep the original G5 X body style? Would've been perfect with the G7 X Mark III's features. This whole thing is just a mindboggle!

I wish they would just add Dual Pixel AF on the G5 X, along with a microphone jack, even if they had to stick an extra hundred quid on the price. And the subsampled 4K will affect low-light performance a lot - even people happy with 3K quality still want good high ISO. I'm not sure how they are subsampling, but if they are only using 3840 of the 5472 horizontal pixels and doing the same vertically then they're only using 50% of the usable pixels of the sensor!

own the G7x Mk1, its 5 years old now, I have a Fuji X100F and Fuji X70, but my wife hates both of the Fuji Camera's so I'm looking at getting a new point and shot,, I have had lots of Canon Compact camera's G9s, the old ixus range and have always been happy with them, but I'm going to get a Sony RX 100 Vii next or the 8 if that comes out soon, Sony just seem to be miles ahead with there auto focus, yes they are more expensive, but when did Money ever come into the equation when we buy camera gear, if it did I wouldn't have a 56mm f1.8, a 16-55 f2.8, 4 Billingham Bags and photography isn't even my job lol. Love the channel Thanks

I got the Sony rx100vII for Christmas I've been taken photos with it everyday since and idk taken photos in the house with lower light makes my photo not clear n sharp n if I bump up the iso I dont want it noise and even shooting outside to me the Sony photo quality is not good so I'm going to best buy today to mess around with the cannon try it out and see! My camera I had was 6yrs old Sony hx50v 30x zoom pocket camera the sony rx100vII is a huge step up but I want start getting into portraits and being able to have a 1.8 instead of 2.8 for lower lighting so I dont have to drop my shutter or raise my iso while taken photos in a house will help I'd think? But I mainly do wildlife and landscape photography so I'm not really sure If the cannon can keep up but like i said it has to be better than my 6yr old Sony hx50v! I would really like your thoughts if I should return the Sony rx100vII or keep it

Thanks for this review. I film mostly video and so the poor autofocus demonstrated here plus that reviews noted over at B&H by users, remove both these cameras from my gadget bag. What I need is a camera this size and/or a replacement to the ever tricky, troublesome, squirrelly GoPro Hero 7's. Any thoughts to a camera that might fit that's small, great video even in moderate to low light and not overly expensive?

I don't see the RX100 VII as king of the compacts, because as a photographer this things lens isn't bright enough. Also the Pop-UP-EVF of the Sonys has a problem. there isn't any rubber around that EVF and so you always touch the flas of the EVF and that smears and smears and smears. It's not that this coulnd't happen with the Canon, what it does a lot, but it's way less.
I had the G5X MKII with me on a job in Norway and Sweden, where I started to leave my Sony A7RIII in the car, after reviewing the images from the first day. If it's in bright sunlight or in the night, this Canon really delivers. I was fascinated about the RX100 VI of my mother, but the Canon is the better to hold and to operate camera. Also the app works better, if you want to do bulb stuff etc, IMHO.
I wished sometimes for that longer reach of the Sony, but in the end, the more light of the Canon was more important. And one thing, I find the Canon to be less noisier and more color accurate in higher ISOs, than the Sony. BTW the AF of the Canon sucks. It offen predicts that it's focused, but it isn't. Thats an software issue and I hope they fix the problem with a firmware update.

Hi guys, my compliment for all your videos really professional and funny ;-)
I am stuck in the decision to buy the Sony RX100 VII and the Canon GX5 II for taking picture.
I really like the possibility to have a longer Zoom, but I also think that Canon with bigger apertur from 1.8 could be much better for picture.
Which one you cam recon to me ?
Thank you so much for your time
    Filippo :-D
