Just bought the Canon 70D today (upgrading from my 20D whose shutter broke this weekend and Canon can't service it anymore due to it being 11 years old) and now even more excited about the camera after watching your video, thanks!!
Hello. Would you say the EOS 70D is a good choice for someone starting out in photography, who wants decent quality images whilst learning/developing their skills? The 70D looks to be a perfect entry level camera for me. The auto mode looks simple enough and there is also a decent amount of manual control under the hood to explore once I get more knowledgeable and confident. All in all....it appears to be a perfect camera to learn before moving up to full frame. What do you think?
I really NEXs too. TBH, I don't see much of a point to using anything larger if it still has an APS-C sensor. What's really interesting is that there are new full frame NEXs on the way! They're supposed to announce them next month.
For Jordan, I have a couple of questions: 1) Regarding the metabones, how does it reduce the crop factor from 2x or almost 2x down to only 1.4? That is pretty awesome! 2) What is the data/bitrate on the 70D, and how do you rate it for quality of video and focus tracking against the GH3 or a hacked GH2 if you like those? 3) Do you think you guys might be able to do a video some time about the best DSLR or Micro4/3 cameras for video? Thanks again for another great video!
There is no detail on the canon but on the nikon u still have lots of detail. You can see that the software of the canon is reducing the noise for the sake of detail! in post you get the noise away but the details u wont get back anymore!
Bring a sd/cf card to B&H or Adorama or any store with sample cameras on display and shoot raw on both, take the images home and then judge. D7100/D5300 Image quality/iso performance beats almost every Canon camera even full frame.
They are cameras with comparable sensor sizes and intended use. NEX cameras use APS-C sensors. Also, Sony DSLRs have utilized similar options for their DSLRs when in live view as well.
i do have D7100 and i tried my friend's 70D, yes it is comparable between these two in Still Images details. But when comes to video production, i love this boy 70D, fully articulating screen, live view touch screen auto focus, color reproduction, 70D win. Compare in sports action images, 70D win because what D7100 lack is burst mode buffer. 7fps + 65 jpeg buffer really does good job in sports action. D7100 have 6fps, but lack of large buffer images, it slow down after 5th frame.
Image quality, dynamic range, iso performance, resolution, D7100 crushes 70D, 7d & 7dmkII. Only D7100 is a bit slower camera (shutter lag, buffer, burst)
CEEPMDEE I just sold my D7100 on Ebay for a 70D. I think the exact opposite of your summary. Some people like Toyota and some like Subaru. Some like BMW over Audi. But all are great products. It's just personal preference but both cameras are great.
You can convert some Sigma lenses. The pricings were just a quick retail comparison at one store. You can get the D7000 second hand as well. It's just ridiculous how expensive the 7D is 4 years after the release.
I agree! Keep hearing all this jazz about canons live view AF on the 70D and I'm like... my lowly Sony NEX's has done this quite well for years, with 1080p60fps to boot... I think the stuff from Olympus and Panasonic has been a lot more interesting lately.
I also specifically mentioned the NEX 5R which costs $450 and has easily comparable performance in auto focus. Yet the 5R still offers 1080p @ 60p on an APS-C sensor, 10FPS full res burst mode, and even a useful WIFI mode that doesn't require other adapters or even a nearby smart device. You were the one who brought up the top comment issue. By your presented logic 0.0003% agree with you, which is obviously not true. My statement comes from general observations on the topic from around the net.
Well, BH isn't the only one that sells the 7D. Check eBay, Amazon, even some forums and/or facebook groups that have or allow people to sell. I was also planning to buy a 7D from someone else online, but it didn't hurt me to search more since it wasn't a rush. IMO, I kinda regret not saving up a little more for a Nikon D7100, but then again I have to get rid of most of my glass... unless there are Nikon mounts for Canon EF and EFS lenses.
For me I wish my Canon 5D Mark lll was an SDI format rather than HDMI. Like the 70D Canon will hold off on putting the features we all want just so they will not have the same features in the next model up. It can be very frustrating sometimes waiting for a new update and when the model comes out it falls short on a few features which would make it one great camera.
Hey guys, you rock! I wanna purchase this camera to use for weddings along with my Rx10 II, but Im not sure what external lenses to purchase with the camera, I was wondering if you could guid me on this?
I'd stick with your GH3 if I were you. Best camera for video out there, hands down. I'm hoping to upgrade from my GH2 although, with the hack I'm using, I'm totally loving this thing to bits :)
Sigma and Tamron have stepped their game up. If they were to make [more] lenses for micro four third cameras, then Canon and Nikon have to step their game up big time.
"6d vs 70d? which is better?" Personally, Im opting for the 70D as my interim camera whilst Canon develops the 5D MKIV. I honestly think the MKIV will be the only full frame I want to own. In the meantime, im learning my skills on the 70D and using the EFS 17-55mm lens. Over the next few years I'll try and get the 24-70 f2.8 II and 70-200mm f2.8 II and my dream 2x lens set up. Consider your upgrade path before committing yourself. The 6D is expensive....especially with a decent lens.
Awesome Review sir Chris!.. ....Im confused in choosing the best DSLR camera for me between the Nikon D5300 or the Canon EOS 70D.... Sir i want to ask if what would you prefer for me as my first DSLR Camera between the two..
Thats the funny bit. The D7100 has a filter removed (Optical Low-pass/Anti-Aliasing filter... I dunno which one or if they are both the same) and on paper, it is going to be disliked by videographers because they are trying to avoid as much moire as possible. Heck, strangely enough, I've seen lots of videos of the D800E (not the D800) being a tad less moire than the 5D MKIII and still retain LOTS of detail and detail that even I think I didn't even notice.
The 7D is still a great camera... if you get it second hand. I got mine for nearly $400, although I had to add certain "collateral" since the seller (well, more of my friend) wanted the other things I had. So... it cost me a total of around $650-$700 if I convert our currency into USD, but it could be slightly more or less. But I see some 7Ds that cost less than $900 even with the 18-135mm kit lens included and some other things.
Also, see if any other system autofocuses in liveview as fast with lenses not made for that system. So far the only one that has done that is Olympus with their new E-M1.
Hi, I'm looking for a all around camera that will do both great still photos, and filming videos . I want a Canon EOS product, but there are so many to choose from! Is the 70D my best choice? I will basically be using this for short films, documentaries, still photos. Please give me your imput, you guys are always great to gain wisdom from. Thank you.
Yes I think the 70D is the best choice on the market today for stills and videos combined. If you're not in a rush and have a big pocket book the new Canon 7D mark 2 should be with us this year and as a full frame camera will probably out perform the 70D overall.
If it must be a Canon then I'd go with this camera and either a 15-85mm lens or a 24-105mm as they are great for video. I'd have a look at the Sony A6000 and 18-105 though.
Is anyone else having audio problems with the Canon 70D? I am experiencing a significant "hiss" in the background of all audio recorded using the built-in mics.
Nikon took out the anti-aliasing filter off the D7100. With stills the D7100 has the advantage. When shooting videos the smudging of fine details isn't noticeable, so the 70D with it's video advantages pulls ahead. It's an individual's choice, what camera they will choose. I like the advantages Canon brings to the table, but that's because it better fit my style of shooting. I also liked Hasselblad for portraiture, but Mamiya for landscapes. It's a choice.
I am no expert but it is said that the nikon 7100 performs better in stills and the canon 70d performs better in video. Canon was emphasizing video when the 70d was being released. However, I would expect the 70d to be a bit better just because of the 7fps would capture lots more.
The NEX and Panasonic don't have the same live view AF that this thing does. Every pixel on the 70D's sensor is an AF sensor. That IS a revolutionary achievement. Agree on the 1080p60, thought. Don't know why Canon doesn't implement that already.
The 70D is not bad but DxOMark called it evolutionary rather than revolutionary and measured its sensor performance as "similar" to the 60D and "disappointing" overall. No headphone jack, no 60p, loud shutter sound - overall 1 year later the Panasonic GH3 still rocks supreme. And that is why Jordan is shooting this very video with a GH3 and not the 70D.
I've had the Canon 70D for a week with a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the footage looks amazing! SHooting at f.2.0 with a Variable ND makes things look cinematic! If I wanted it to look like a video then I would use my XF100! I tried the GH3 and it offers lots of stuff over the Canon for sure-it I was into narrative work the GH3 is the one..for weddings and concerts in low light..and some minor narrative work...Canon 70D with a good lens...Can we all just get along...? :-)
TheCameraStoreTV Thanks for your reply! I am looking for a good video camera between Nikon D7100 and Canon 70D. But now I see GH3 has better video performance than both. I am totally a newbie, main purpose is for short film. Is GH3 the best choice in same price range for short film? How about Sony RX100 Mark III? Your videos are excellent!
Emimarson The GH3 is the best image quality in the sub-$1500 price range. The RX100 MK III shoots great quality video, but the lack of audio controls holds it back from being a good single camera solution. Jordan @ TCSTV
what do you guys think would be better for event videography such as weddings, concerts, etc. the panasonic gh3 or the 70d? I'm leaning towards the gh3 because of the headphone jack, 60p at 1080, the evf, and as of now its $100 less. let me know what you think.
The question is when more lenses get STM. So far the lenses with STM are on the lower level. Wouldn't it be nice to get a nice big and yes expensive prime with STM.
What about now that its 2017 is the 70d still a good buy? I have two days to return my t6s for a 70d or stay with the t6s I'm pretty new to this but always been into action sports and getting pictures of LA, especially at night
***** Oh and FYI, I was caught in a heavy monsoon rain without a cover for the camera, it's multi controller malfunctioned, but next day it's back to normal
Don't think it's worth the upgrade from my 60D...Then again - I think nothing is unless it's a full frame body =) Can't wait to see first low light pictures online ( 3200-6400 ISO )... Wouldn't mind trying that AF system out too... All in all - nice review =) Keep them coming =)
hi, i got some problems with quality of images. once i review after taking pictures from my 70D it's really beautiful on the camera but once i transfer to PC quality is different so why is that?
Not true. I own a Canon 60D and 80% of my lenses are Canon. I've been using their cameras since the release of the T2i and upgraded from there. I mainly upgraded to the FS700 as our primary because of its high-speed capabilities. I have been a fan of Canon for years, but these last couple of years they make minor upgrades and claim they are major while neglecting the should-be basic upgrades. Also, 9 votes or not its still top comment. I'm not the only one who thinks this.
i own a 700d (t5i) but i want to upgrade to something more durable, with weather seal so i can take pictures and video on a motocross track or on a boat knowing that the water and dust is not going to damage the camera and i dont know if i should get a 70d or a used 5d mark ii, i dont really care about the image quality and features because both are great and both are at the same price for the body only right now so which one should i get? (btw sorry for my english)
hi bro, please recommend I've a question im about to start making videos soon which one is more better fit for making videos? Canon 60D, 650D, 7D or 70D? thanks
Chris, Great video! First off, *I* care about your past. That which you choose to share at any rate. Second, I have an NEX-5N and a Pentax LX film SLR, both of which have some interpretation of a flipping viewfinder...I find it very useful when in the sun for shots where I need the camera above or below normal eye level...and yes, it makes candids a whole lot easier, as people don't think of looking down at the ground as a photography stance anymore. It means you catch moments as you see and want to capture them, not with twenty people giving cheezy grins and thumbs up and stupid poses to the camera when that wasn't what I was after anyway. If they ask me if I took a picture after the fact I'll always say yes...but it's valuable to have them not know during the exposure. That's when it matters.
*I just received my new CANON 70D a week ago ( I buy it on: #**amzn.to/1m8jiLG**). I have been reading every review that has come available on the Internet and also You-tube. I have also talked to a few Professionals who use CANON equipment to get their view*.
The D7100 clearly retains more detail and sharpness when they zoom 1:1. Just look at the screws and dents along the horizontal bars. I'd rather have more visible noise than the 70D's smudging of fine details.
Thanks. I got my 70d in June 2015, still learning ALL THE THINGS IT CAN DO!!!
I have the Canon 70D and I'm thoroughly enjoying every moment with it.
Brilliant Idea's often mean less work. Great job and thanks to Mike Drew.
Great production guys. This video has helped me to finally make up my mind to buy the 70D. Many thanks.
Love your videos so professional and informative. Good work guys
Just bought the Canon 70D today (upgrading from my 20D whose shutter broke this weekend and Canon can't service it anymore due to it being 11 years old) and now even more excited about the camera after watching your video, thanks!!

The D7100 walks all over this camera in dynamic range, resolution detail & overall bang for buck.
Autofocus in video mode is gone with the metabone, right?
Mike Drew : The legend of TCSTV ! :D
2:59 he say nikon better than canon on ISO. I can see loads of noise on the nikon in the black and none in the canon.
Nikon is way sharper and Canon is pretty soft. I rather have a bit noisier image than a soft with a bit noisey image.
There is no detail on the canon but on the nikon u still have lots of detail. You can see that the software of the canon is reducing the noise for the sake of detail! in post you get the noise away but the details u wont get back anymore!

1) It uses a wide angle converter, similar to a 1.4x teleconvertor, but the other way around. The best thing: it also applies to the aperture.
They are cameras with comparable sensor sizes and intended use. NEX cameras use APS-C sensors. Also, Sony DSLRs have utilized similar options for their DSLRs when in live view as well.
thank u for the review,
how is it if u compare with pentax k-3?

Jon W Yes everyone is entitled to choice and opinion but what CEEP stated was fact. The D7100 is superior in all those tested areas.
anybody having any focusing issues with stills?
You can convert some Sigma lenses. The pricings were just a quick retail comparison at one store. You can get the D7000 second hand as well. It's just ridiculous how expensive the 7D is 4 years after the release.
It would be awesome to see you guys do a comparison of the EP5 and GX7.
Why not a 70D or 7D mark II vs Pentax K3 test?
So would you say you recommend the 70D for image quality shots? with or without a good lens? thanks!
It can take a long time for the higher resolution versions of videos to get posted. 720p is now available.
I like how you talk on you videos! You're happy and energetic when reviewing! Awesome review! SUBSCRIBE!

Do u think it is worth the upgrade from Canon EoS 60D to 70D??Is it worth the price??Plz reply!
Oh wait, I see a video you guys did on the metabones, I will watch it now!
ah ... finally - HD. Thank-you.
Moving from an 1100D (t3) to the 70D, will I notice a significant improvement in quality?
May I ask, what is that glass looking filter they put in front of their lenses. What is it called and where can I buy them?
Well, BH isn't the only one that sells the 7D. Check eBay, Amazon, even some forums and/or facebook groups that have or allow people to sell. I was also planning to buy a 7D from someone else online, but it didn't hurt me to search more since it wasn't a rush.

Aye man how good of a image quality do we really get from the 70d as a beginner photographer
Why is this posted at only 360p?
Hey guys, you rock! I wanna purchase this camera to use for weddings along with my Rx10 II, but Im not sure what external lenses to purchase with the camera, I was wondering if you could guid me on this?
I'd stick with your GH3 if I were you. Best camera for video out there, hands down. I'm hoping to upgrade from my GH2 although, with the hack I'm using, I'm totally loving this thing to bits :)
which lens used in canon 70d
Thanks! I have to wrap my head around this. :)
Sigma and Tamron have stepped their game up. If they were to make [more] lenses for micro four third cameras, then Canon and Nikon have to step their game up big time.
is this video shot with a 70d?
"6d vs 70d? which is better?"
Personally, Im opting for the 70D as my interim camera whilst Canon develops the 5D MKIV.

How does the 70d perform in Sports photography? Gymnastics in particular?
i been using my 70d with sigma 70-200 f2.8 and it's performing pretty good even in low lights settings.
Thanks, man!
70d or lumix g7? plan on using a little bit for photograph more on video shooting.
+pierreson tan 70D all the way!
Canon 70d or Panasonic Lumix GX8? I use for predominantly travel videos and vlogging as well as some photography here and there.
Would you prefer 70d over GH3?
Also, see if any other system autofocuses in liveview as fast with lenses not made for that system. So far the only one that has done that is Olympus with their new E-M1.
You guys should make an app for all the cameras you review , oh and that was a good review for the Canon EOS 70D , I'm thinking of buying it :)
Good review dude!
Hi, I'm looking for a all around camera that will do both great still photos, and filming videos . I want a Canon EOS product, but there are so many to choose from! Is the 70D my best choice? Toby Masters loool thanks man you'v saved my life.
thank you for this great video
They omit features for a variety of reasons, but mostly to create an upgrade path.
trying to decide if to get this or 760d for landscape photography I did prefer the feel of the 70D but is there much of a difference
how is the 70d for still shots for wildlife

Nice video, I'm a nikon shooter but this seems to have nice features especially with the STM glass. I think that's what it's called :-).

I've had the Canon 70D for a week with a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the footage looks amazing! SHooting at f.2.0 with a Variable ND makes things look cinematic! Can u do 5d mark iii?
What camera is being used to record this video?
Please answer.
Most of it was filmed on the Panasonic GH3. The outtro was filmed on the Sony FS700.

Why no Pentax K5IIs?
what do you guys think would be better for event videography such as weddings, concerts, etc. the panasonic gh3 or the 70d? I'm leaning towards the gh3 because of the headphone jack, 60p at 1080, the evf, and as of now its $100 less. let me know what you think.
what camera are you using to shoot the actual video?
it's in the description
Is the viewfinder the same size as the 7d or smaller?
it's 98%.

hi, what camara is the best.... canon 70d or nikon d7100 ? Regards
And this can be used in all different weather conditions?
Yes i think it is, I often take out my 70D when rain comes and yes there's no problem with it even in a monsoon heavy rain!
***** Oh and FYI, I was caught in a heavy monsoon rain without a cover for the camera, it's multi controller malfunctioned, but next day it's back to normal
They both did in the past and some are still for sale
Dang!! is there an SLR that you could recommend that has the headphone jack….sure wish the 70D had one…thanks!!
Canon 70D or Panasonic Lumix GH3?
Don't think it's worth the upgrade from my 60D...Then again - I think nothing is unless it's a full frame body =) Can't wait to see first low light pictures online ( 3200-6400 ISO )...
Wouldn't mind trying that AF system out too...
All in all - nice review =) Keep them coming =)
yes but the issues like autofocus are harder on dslr's that was my point
I also forgot to mention that alot of their lenses are being sold with Sony mounts for their DSLRs.
Holy cow paddies, he does live!
Sigma and Tamron have stepped their games up since 2012 and they are making Canon and Nikon lenses a run for their worth.
What is the battery life of the Canon?
Most standard battery life in most cameras is around about 2 hours get extra batteries if you do long day event or weddings
ho many MM did u Use in 70d?
I"m torn between the Canon EOS 70D and the Nikon D5300. Any suggestions/opinions?
I would choose the canon trust me I've been searching for a long time about every single feature of these..
canon 70D....fabulous autofocus...
Buy a mint used 7D for $500. on craigslist.
***** not enough to justify the price vs buying a used 7D
hi, i got some problems with quality of images. once i review after taking pictures from my 70D it's really beautiful on the camera but once i transfer to PC quality is different so why is that?
(btw sorry for my english)
can i use this 70d with any atomos products?
hi bro, please recommend I've a question im about to start making videos soon which one is more better fit for making videos? Canon 60D, 650D, 7D or 70D? thanks
70D for sure. with that articulating and touch screen, not even mentioning the autofocus in video.
Chris,
Great video!
Hey I'd love to see a 70D, D7100, K-3 shootout!
Love the reviews, Great job!
Will the Canon 24-105 f4L work on this camera?
