  • Just my thoughts on the old master of RUclips video, the 70d. I was able to borrow my friend's 70d for a while so I thought why not make a video about it in 2022. Spoiler alert! it's a great camera and is more than capable in today's photography market. It is even a great photographer's RUclips camera. Thanks for watching.

    I went from a 600D to 70D in 2014. last year my 70D broke and Canon can't repair it(dont manufacture parts anymore). Bought myself an used 70D two weeks ago. It's such a good camera. Even 10 years after release, I can get very good shots. With experience and knowledge, this camera can give you everything to compete with todays high-end.

    Canon 70D was a great camera which I loved. But didn't know it's so susceptible to use of the video option! I enjoyed recording videos with it for short durations. But then, the main-board got injured and started giving frequent trouble. Finally, I switched off both video and live view options and sold it out at throw-away price mentioning the issues to the customer.
    Now, I've bought a 90D. Wondering how it will behave!

    I have always liked to have the first version of everything. I feel like that is where the producers put in the most effort, the first version...then they just make minor changes. And not always in the rigth direction. I have the 7D, 6D, 5D MK2 (the MK2 because of the video) and the first EOS-M. With software upgrades, they are more than good enough. Every camera is a compromise anyways. :) Fun fact, I'm an employed potographer and photo teacher. I use the 5D for studio work...and the 6D, the 70D for wildlife, sports and so on. And for video. 1080P 24 FPS is more than good enough. The EOS-M is more something I just carry around. :)

    Used the 50D, the 70D and now the 90D. Let's just say Canon's APSC DSLR cameras just keep getting better and better. I can't see myself jumping to the 'R' line... Not seeing a 3x improvement in image IQ to justify the price.

    • @SirBeauJangles
      @SirBeauJangles 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@NoProJoe the R models really shine if you're a regular shooter of highly mobile targets like flying birds. Their AF system is like night versus day, even if compared to the likes of either a 7d2 or EVEN a 5d4! On even the r6 first mirrorless job I think, the AF "sees" the eye on a flying bird and tracks it in flight, almost so perfectly that high quality shots of even fast flying birds are the norm in not fully expert hands. But you pay big for those models being new tech, I'm sticking with my DSLRs including both those above mentioned, .i tell myself that I want to retain credit for my better shots as they're "only" shot on older tech! Those R cameras getting mainstream has meant that there was never a better time to buy high end used DSLRs, with maybe some 1DX models remaining pricey.

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  Год назад +4

      The 24mm STM from Canon is an affordable RUclips lens. This is if you are mounting your camera on a tripod and have a bit of room. 24mm has a FF equivalent focal view of around 38mm so not really wide but great for tripod videos. If you are going to hold the camera the Canon 10-18mm is a good choice. It's nice and wide but you are not going to get a very out of focus background and you'll need good lighting. I used the kit 18-55 STM with lighting, the 17-50mm f2.8 sigma (load focus you need a lav mic or an audio recorder), and the 50mm f1.8 (you need a bigger area to use this lens because it is moving into telephoto range). In the end the kit lens, the 24mm, and the 17-50 were my most used lenses on my Canon stop for video. Confusing I know but there are many factors to lens choice. Let me know your shooting situation and I can make a better recommendation.

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  Год назад +2

      The type of lens you use is going to depend on a few things. Will you be using the auto focus or manual focusing? What type of video are you shooting (indoor, outdoor, action, RUclips talking head video)? The video you just watched was shot with the 18-135mm kit lens. If you have good light and don't care about the background being massively out of focus it works fine. I use to use the Canon 24mm STM f2.8 for video quite often. It had great auto focus, a wide aperture, fairly sharp, and it is actually a pretty inexpensive lens. Almost all STM lenses are great for video. The major problem with them is most of them have variable apertures. So the aperture changes as you zoom. This changes the exposure on your video and changes the look of the video as you shoot. This is avoided by choosing a focal length for the duration of the shot. I hope this helps, unfortunately, choosing lenses is not a straight forward thing. It's very dependent on your type of shooting.

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  Год назад +1

      The answer is it’s tough through the viewfinder. You have to have a good eye. You can use live view and punch in on the image fore critical focus. As far as shake a tripod, steady hand, and a shutter speed above 1/120 should get it done. Outdoor shouldn’t be a problem. Your shutter speed will be high enough for hand held shooting without a worry.

      I only do minimal photography. More on a fun hobby not for work related. Let’s say I go to an event I just want to take a clear photo and nice image. Some one offered me to trade it in with 5D or 6D. I guess it’s the 1st gent or (classic) as they say. What do you think? My 70D only has around 9,400 - 9,600 shutter count.

      @@stephennesheanerandallalba8930 personally I would stay with the 70D. The 5D and 6D are great cameras but your 70D has more features. The af is a huge bonus on the 70d. The 6D definitely can deliver some impressive image quality but you’ll need good lenses to truly take advantage of it.

    I'm stuck between the 70D and 2000D (Rebel T7). It will be my first camera and I won't be taking videos... Only photos to edit (or not edit) and post them on social media. Any help?

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  Год назад +2

      If you've never used a DSLR before and you are not sure if you will stay with it a used camera is almost always your best bet. The T7 is an ok option but it lacks a lot of important options. Most of all the AF system. The 70D has a much better AF system even though it us an older unit. 80D is even better. The processor in the T7 is quite old also. In fact it is a generation older than the one in the 70D. You can also look into an Olympus em10 mark iii or an em 5 mark ii. They also have great image quality and features. They are much smaller and lighter than the aforementioned Canons.

      @@NoProJoe the thing is the used 70D is $500 and the used 2000D is $280. I'm low on budget atm and was thinking of getting the 2000D with a prime lense of 50 or 55mm. I was thinking the 2000D would make it hard on me, giving a better learning curve than the 70D. Also to understand when I reached the limit. I have seen a lot of reviews on the 2000D and it takes great shots, I will also be editing the pictures for social media purposes, starting as a hobby. Let me know what you think and thanks for the reply, really appreciate it.

    • @NoProJoe

      The live view focuses off the sensor like a mirrorless camera. With the mirror down it uses the focusing screen. I’m sure this is a silly question but is your diopter adjusted on your viewfinder? If so it’s probably something in the focusing screen area. Not 100% on how the magic happens but I’m sure a camera shop should be able to fix it. It’s a very common camera.

      The 7D and the 2000d have some things in common. The 2000d has 6 more megapixels and a digic 4+ processor but other than that the 7d is the better camera. The fps on the 7D is much higher, it has professional controls, it’s built like a tank (weather sealed magnesium alloy build). The 7d is 18 megapixels with a digic 4 processor. The focusing is faster on the 7d and the tracking is better. If I were making the choice it would be the 7d over the 2000d. That being said, the 2000d will work just fine and produce nice images for all general photography. The 7d is getting old and finding a good body might be tough. They are definitely out the with very low shutter counts but you have to do your research.
