I love this crash course! Every new photographer needs to understand it though so I'm planning to make a tutorial in Filipino using a Canon Rebel or 80D. Thanks for sharing!!! 😍

set it to Av mode, set auto iso and change manualy only aperture, that's the best more for like 90% of all situations, playing with completely manual mode is crazy for begginers
@@jadeSLenin I mean aperture priority, which is what most of photographers use most of the time. I don't know how it's marked on Nikon cameras, it's mostly Av or just A. www.oehling.cz/data/imgs/29/0031329l.jpg You just set aperture manualy, so you have control over depth of field and you let other things (shutter speed and ISO) on auto which is ok in most of situations.
If I may add one tip that really helped me as a beginner regarding fstop: if you imagine a long line of letter Fs going into the distance, the higher the fstop, the more Fs will be in focus, the lower the fstop, the fewer Fs will be in focus. I hope that helps someone. 👍 Good video, cheers.
Ooo we just starting straight away yeah ? Love that ... no intro ..no hello.. boom INFORMATION 10 minute straight! Subbed my brother ...let’s see more !
The advice to set ISO first and shutter speed last is great for photography. However, everyone should keep in mind that if shooting video, the order is basically reversed. You typically want the shutter speed set as close as possible to 2x your framerate, you still want to set aperture second to get the depth of field you want, and then you adjust ISO last to get brightness to match. If your camera doesn't have enough usable ISO range to achieve the right target brightness, if the image is too bright, you can darken it with filters. If it's too dark/noisy on the other hand, then you may have to compromise on depth of field, and possibly slow down the shutter speed slightly.
I’m a junior and I want to go into photography. I took online lessons and was never able to grasp a cameras settings and how they work until this video! Thank you so much!
I’ve taken a few photos on my camera phone that I had edited, printed and hung in my office. Wanted to go to the next level but didn’t have a clue where to start. Thanks to you I now have notes explaining the functions and a sweet chart at that. Thank you!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, David!! I've been taking a terrible photography course in school and haven't learned hardly anything, but rather have gotten more and more confused. Your way of explaining things, along with the examples, has been a life and grade saver! I'm a little less terrified and in tears about photography now due to your videos, so THANK YOU!
as someone who has adhd and severly struggles with retaining information and keeping attention this was the best video to explain this stuff ive seen yet. direct to the point with out using huge words
Have to say, I want to start getting a bit more serious about photography and having watched many RUclips videos on photography. Yours is the best, most informative, most detailed, easiest to understand with one of the best explanations on photography terms. Yours covers things that I would have to watch in 4-5 videos. Keep up the good work! Liked and definitely subscribed 👍🏻💪🏻
I really appreciate this as someone who is very easily confused, I appreciate being talked to like a child when it comes to camera settings 😅 thanks for this!
Recently I've gotten into photography, most of my shots have been decent but when I came to darker areas and my shots were not soo great. This video here taught me more in 10 minutes then reading it online. Thank you very much for the fast and simple explanation and the amazing chart that accompanies it.
That saved me so much time. What a great synopsis of the core elements. Exactly what I have been looking for to grasp the broad strokes, and presented so clearly. Thanks! Great work.
So after years of thinking about and praying about it. I finally started my photography business! I have not charged anyone yet but I have been doing test runs and take pictures of my friends. This video has happened soooo much!! Thank you!!!
Each nd every person who wants to shoot some great pictures should definitely watch this vid. he broke it down step by step so simply. Your the guy bro. Hatsoff !! super super awesome. 😇🙌🙌👍👍🙏
Well done David. I’m in my 70’s and just wanting to get back into photography again. (Damn those phone cameras!) and your piece is a great way to start. Clear and concise.🇦🇺🇺🇸
I actually adjust the ISO last all the time. I see ISO as a last measure that will only be bumped up from 100 if I really need it. Usually I just set my aperture first, then my shutter speed as low as possible while maintaining the ISO at 100, and only if I can't make the shutter speed slower than what I usually feel comfortable (around 1/160), only then I'll bump up the ISO. I use a 1.4 56mm on a Sony a6400, btw.
Dude I’ve watched many beginner photography videos and this is by far the best and most descriptive, while explaining in the easiest way to comprehend.
That seemed so simple. Once someone gifted me a DSLR but I never used it since I was afraid of all the exposure, aperture, focus and all things written on the lens. But now after watching this video I'll try out my camera for sure. Thank you David❤
Stoked man, thank you so much! I think it usually gets explained in an overcomplicated way that intimidates and turns people off photography. Hopefully when people see that the basis of it all is super simple, they'll dig in and spend more time on the more complex bits!
DAVID THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! As a newbie photographer/videographer I have been scouring RUclips for explanations. And this right here...was EXTREMELY clear, thorough, and FUN!!!! I cannot thank you enough!
The acronym ISO stands for “International Organization for Standardization”. However, camera ISO does not directly refer to the organization that creates various technology and product standards. Ever since two film standards called ASA and DIN were combined into ISO standards in 1974 (later revised for both film and digital photography), they were referred to as one word “ISO” from that point on. Although ISO initially defined only film sensitivity, it was later adopted by digital camera manufacturers with the purpose of maintaining similar brightness levels as film. You can say it either way as well.
The International Standards Organizarion change occured in 1983 and was fully adopted in 1984. BTW, I not only remember the change, I still have a roll of film that showed both. That roll of film states 1983/1984 to show the period of time of the change. Now I just need to find it so I can photograph it...
@@jimlanders That would be amazing. My first camera was my grandfathers Minolta SRT-101 and he had some unused fujichrome in boxes still. I really want to use it but can't bring myself to open it.
Pretty much. I mean in application it always was a measurement for light sensitivity either for film or plates or a sensor but the "word" to indicate it has always been the acronym for whatever standard was being used and the organization that devised it. There were a few out there Including GOST if you ever used soviet Cameras. This idea that ISO is a word in isolation seems to be no more than the 2010s and seems to come from the internet and probably people who have never used a film camera older than the 80s.
I did photography as a subject in high school but completely forgot about everything and a couple years later, here i am, trying to relearn everything. Your video has helped me so much! I'm so excited to experiment and improve!
Thank you so much for this video! Trying to figure out F stops and shutter speeds and why my photos are too dark or too bright while changing all three of these things without trying one at a time has nearly driven me crazy but hearing it simplified like this, was way better for me to go try to figure it out! Kudos to you.
I may be a few years late but thank you so much! I’ve been chasing my dream of photography for years and I finally got a camera this year, been struggling trying to figure it out on my own and honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better explanation. Short and simple. Thank you!!!
Probably never see this but this one of the best videos for beginners I’ve seen. Explains the basics and SHOWING EXAMPLES ! Which is hugeeee !! Not knowing some of terms made ir really confusing to me when they didn’t show pictures. But this helped a lot ! You’ll probably never see this but thank you lol
I'm fairly new to using my Nikon Z's manual setting and of all the videos I've watched this one provided the most detailed (but easily understood) instructions for getting out of auto-focus mode. Thank you!
Every other video that I have Watched until this one, now, made it sound like astronomy… and there you go in 10 minutes, in simple words, straight to the point… Thank you so so much !!!
Honestly when i saw the video i did'nt expect it to be this short, precise and direct. What I could'nt grasp in a one week class was gotten within just few minutes!. Thank you so much for your time!!
I started studying photography very recently and this is one of THE BEST videos I came across for the subject (I should have seen this first before watching lots of others). This is very short video but have the essential basics covered. The SS was awesome. Thank you for the word ISO (eye-so) ... I never knew !!!
That’s what I’ve been doing! I bought my canon 80D in March and I’ve been using it at home and on a walking trail near my house. I’ve watched so many RUclips videos to help with learning photography, but this guy was by far the best! So simple.
Have to say pal - really enjoying your videos. I’ve never commented on RUclips before but started watching you after I ordered my first GoPro (7 Black) - found your videos super informative and love your footage. I’ve been trying to get into photography for years but never quite got beyond the basics but you have inspired me to give it another push and can’t wait to start playing with my GoPro. Keep up the great work, you’re one of the best I’ve seen on here.
Thank you so much Jason, super kind of you! I think you nailed it that you just need to make that push and be consistent about using the GoPro. Obviously, the more you practice, the better you get! With the older DSLR cameras, we used to joke that you weren't a photographer until you've broken a shutter. Mainly, because shutters were rated to about 100,000 releases. So you would need to take 100,000 photos to break one! Hahhaa! Not sure what it is with the GoPro, but I promise you the more you play with it, the better and better you'll get! If you put together any videos, send a link my way, I would love to check them out!
Hi, I'm Amanda. I just bought my first camera after years of taking pictures with my phone that people thought were taken with a camera. I saved and bought a Sony A7R III. I wanted to thank you for this video because to be honest I'm pretty overwhelmed. There's a lot I need to learn. I have taken a few good shots without doing anything with the settings(because I have no clue). I've been told I have a good eye for composition? Anyway, I'm a counsellor but have a dream to become a professional photographer and make amateur documentaries. Your video was so good for me because it gave me some of the basics in 10. Hey David, I'm just getting into DSLR and out of 20+ basic tutorial vids I've watched on YT yours is the best in terms of simplicity, ease of understanding, and personal vibes. I went to check out your playlists in hopes of finding more beginner tutorials, but didn't see an easy way to find more. Would you consider creating a shorter playlist of maybe ~10 vids specifically for beginners? May simply be curating some that you already have posted into something like "first 30 days of photography". I think that would help get more viewers to your channel and convert. I'll be returning to your channel regardless, thanks!

very informative. i dont have a camera but from a young age i had interest in photography and i held many and took decent pictures but never knew basic things and even before going to the second point you gave me a very important thing i had issues with but never understood why. you took slowly and focus on things that makes people understand better, great work thank you
This video is great! I love photography and have for years! I really want to learn more and get better, but have felt so overwhelmed with it all. If I may add one tip that really helped me as a beginner regarding fstop: if you imagine a long line of letter Fs going into the distance, the higher the fstop, the more Fs will be in focus, the lower the fstop, the fewer Fs will be in focus.
I hope that helps someone. 👍
Good video, cheers.

Your ISO, aperture, and shutter speed chart is amazing! It is the best I've seen. The visual definitely helps.

Same
Same here, with my Canon M50 the image quality starts to deteriorate after around 800 ISO, so I have to keep it low
I usually leave iso at 100/200 when it's before dark
I almost never comment RUclips videos, but man this guy brought so much value... Big like and sub! Plus you deserve more views.

This is truly photography 101 for any beginner like me. Thanks very much for this.

But now after watching this video I'll try out my camera for sure. Thank you David❤
It would not even be possible to make this easier, thank you for the excellent explenation.
Stoked man, thank you so much! I think it usually gets explained in an overcomplicated way that intimidates and turns people off photography. Hopefully when people see that the basis of it all is super simple, they'll dig in and spend more time on the more complex bits!

Was searching for that comment lol
David I wish I could take your class in person, your ease of teaching and enthusiasm is contagious. 🎉Thank you so much‼️
