Nice work guys. From my reviews, the 80D for me is pretty much the best fit for most people looking to buy a canon APSC these days unless they specifically need the speed of the 7D mark ii. Hope the weather is getting a bit warmer on your side of the world! All the best, Chris
Hey chris, what lens r u using on ur 80d for ur shooting style reviews? Im doing similar shots to urs on my channel and im wondering what lens to get with my new canon 80d
This is everything that I'm finding with my new 80D. I had such buyers remorse with my Rebel and I took a chance with everything that I had heard and I pre-ordered the 80D and boy am I happy with this camera!!
How about the video HDR?! I remember hearing in the preview that 80D will have Video HDR. Is that true? How is it implemented? Thats' a major deal for video if it's actually implemented in this final version. Please let us know.
+fsociety - I understand your rant. However, you need to understand Canon's point of view on this. The 80D is a camera for photography. Asking them for 4k video and 120fps/240fps video in their range of photography cameras seems dumb. Their range of video cameras do do this easily. Their point is, you want to shoot video, buy a video camera. And if it helps, Sony and Panasonic make DSLRs that shoot videos really well and shoot sub-par photographs. I guess, you can't have both at a low price. The Canon 1Dx does all what you want and cost a pretty $8,000. It not their fault. You get what you pay for.
+Chris S Hows the grip and the button layout, I was disappointed with the canon 70D grip and the wheel. I gotten use to Canon 60D large wheel or circle when navigating photos.
+EricsMode Sad to say I have not had the spare cash for the upgrade yet. I am another month out till I can divert from College tuition for two girls and life.
Chris S Oh I see. I sold my 60D a couple years later when the 70D came out because the value is goes down every time theres a new release, then I sold my 70D just today. I downgraded to Canon eos m3; mirrorless camera. Still debating if 80D is worth it.
+EricsMode Can't comment about n the 70D, but having a 60D before I can say the touch screen is a real joy on the 80D. You can swipe and pinch to zoom through your photos, 45 point autofocus is a really nice upgrade to. Only one "minor" issue the delete button on the 80d is where the play button used to be on the 60d so I keep going to delete my pictures, give it a couple of weeks and I will soon get used to that.
Its 3 years later and I just bought this bad ass camera. Why i look at reviews after i buy something ill never know but i gotta say I love this camera. Its pin sharp and I mainly got it after trying the auto focus on it compaired to other full frame cameras on the market in 2019 and this felt silky smooth. Ive done wild life with the kit 75-250 lens and even through a car window the results were stunning. Ive even done a moon shot which had detail of the crators, have also done an Air show and it tracks high speed jets even with a 50mm lens. Noise is minimal on this camera in low light and long exposure is great. The fact you can use wifi and remotely control it from your phone or laptop is amazing. I was really worried about buying a camera that was 3 years old but have to say for the price its amazing.
Only channel still making me watch episodes for DSLRs, not just mirroless. And Calgary conventions & visitors bureau should use you both for their promo videos about the city. Been a year since I started following, it changed the images I had about the city completely, in a good way. Jordan even in short sleeve shirt in this time of the year??
nikon, but canon wins hand down for video. the 7200 doent have an aa filter plus nikon has a better history for better pictures. but the 80d is still a great camera
Hey guys, I've been sweating my first DSLR purchase (despite my dust-gathering film degree) and I've watched a ton of camera reviews. You guys are the only channel I've found that's bright enough to shoot the review with the camera you're reviewing. After watching, I think I'm gonna pick up an 80D. Thanks for such a thoughtful video! Subscribed.
"The E-aws 80D" ... For your problem at 6:50, don't use that to move the focusing point. Use the two wheels. The lower wheel moves them perfectly vertically and the trigger wheel moves them horizontally.
+TheCameraStoreTV I was afraid of the overheating being an issue and I know Canons are quite reliable. Have you run into overheating frequently? And thanks again!
The only time I've had an overheating issue on the A6300 was during our recent X-T2 shoot in New York. It was 38 degrees Celsius, and the camera overheated every ten minutes or so. I wound up recording to a Pix-E5 external recorder eventually, which solved the problem. Jordan @ TCSTV
This review is surprisingly positive after all the negative stuff I have seen on YT and read in many comparisons where Sony and Lumix cameras are far ahead...is it just because of the 4K thing....?
You are one of the best reviewers, even if I am not interested in the product, i watch your videos to get a quick update of new cameras and I am never disappointed. Thanks for another great review!
I filmed Chris shooting his comparison shots for the high ISO and Dynamic range comparisons and accidentally included it in that montage. Nothing scandelous. Jordan @ TCSTV
Really enjoyed Jordan vlogging haha! But really though, the content you release is great. Keep those reviews coming! Would love to see a review (or just a take on it) on the Sigma Contemporary 30mm f1.4 for mft. Keep it up!
1:30 the image seems to be flickering ? exactly how much bugs and glitches does this camera have ? especially in video mode ? cause i see some big problems with it when filming, like the zeebra effect , flickering and a few chromatic aberations that are hard to notice to the day by day consumer ?
The trouble with Canon is they don't want their video and photo worlds to collide. They've always saved the best video features for their Cinema Line cameras and never introduce them to their mid tier stills cameras like every other manufacturer is doing. I mean come on, a max resolution of 1080p? 60 FPS? No decent flat picture profile? This is 2010 level stuff.
Can a no-pro user afford a cinema camera from Canon? Nope. They should make videophile camera for normal customers. The 80D is half backed and way to expensive as well
+hellomyphone It's not expensive at all. It's worth every cent just for its still capabilities alone! Add the simple video functionality for amateurs and it's a real winner. Why is everyone pretending to be a videographer when I never see anyone on the street shooting video, and literally never (other than on mobile phones or occasionally on professional video cameras)? Most people complaining about video don't even shoot it and are simply spec sheet fanboys. I do tons of street photography so I'm always out and about. Where are these video guys? What are they shooting? Oh, in their imagination... I thought so.
+cooloox EXACTLY what i have been saying. and half of these fan boys just film their kids in the back yard or a basic birthday party then shelf the camera for the next few months. the same people who leave comments saying how "Gradeable" is the footage, and ask about shutter count when buying used.... its JUST a camera. take photos, be happy. learn the skill of photography, don't buy into gimmicks.
Maybe?? If I'd put some L series lenses on my 80d, I'd like it better. My efs 24mm stm is great. My efs 10-18 is stm is ok. My efs 55-250 is stm I think is not so great. Please recommend some L lenses. I'm considering ef 70-200, ef 200 2.8ii, ef 135 f2l, ef 400 f5.6l. I was leaning toward the ef 100-400 is2, but read about dust getting inside. Thanks
Hey Jordan, have you had the opportunity to make a direct comparison between the 80D´s dual pixel AF vs Sony a6300´s AF in video mode? It´d be really great to know which one is actually "better". Cheers mate
+1650million I've found the 80D AF a bit more consistent, though much of that is due to the ability to quickly correct the camera with the touch screen if the AF drifts. Jordan @ TCSTV
I'm a freelance corporate shooter planning on leaving Canon to join the Sony a7S bandwagon. My twin 60D have served me well over the years and it's due for an upgrade. I loved the 70D, the Dual Pixel AF feels like magic, but held on for something more. The a7S came and afterwards, Canon feels so lagging. When the 80D came out I was cynical, pointing out that the headphone port was the only new thing on it. I totally dismissed the camera. Until I see this review. Wow. First of all, I love how while you guys try to be critical on things, you're not hating Canon like many does today. Second, I love how some new things are brought up. I saw another review on the 80D which failed to point out the positives, and merely took the viewers on a cynical trip. And finally, it makes me rethink my plans. I am now seriously considering this camera. I would still get an a7S but I think I'm gonna enjoy shooting with this more. Probably as B cam. Familiar ergonomics plus super easy focus pulls, I'm in. So thank you guys for making this review. Almost missed a good camera.
Just traded in my 550D and now awaiting arrival of my 80D. Like a crazy kid at christmas. I'm sure to see improvements and to open the door for more potential in myself. Lot more to learn to. Cheers was a great review and has given me confidence in my purchase. 😊
Great review guys! I love my Canon 70D and am now ready to step it up and trade it in for the 80D thanks to this glowing review you gave it. As I shoot mostly video, the new sensor and the headphone jack had me at "hello" anyway. But now I feel confident and well informed about my upcoming purchase. Thank you!
Video sharpness is a modern selling trick for youtube generation. Sharper than in this video looks like cheap TV production. Both colors and "softness" of Canon make it look like an actual movie. Which is good by me, but it''s a matter of opinion i guess. Note how many great features this camera has and everybody still complains - hey, no 4K, blah blah blah. Sounds like people became too dependent on technology.
+Dani Timo I second all of what you say !! those that actually make a living from taking images like myself will like all the features, I've got one coming to 2nd my 1dxmk2
+Video DSLR Tutorial okay - details (too much of them) make it look like TV production. Anyway, I can make a lovely video with 7D and it has nothing to do with technicality, even though there are some areas I'm sure 4K and good details are appreciated. Still, 80D is a cool camera and sure it is an improvement from 70D
8:18 The 80D does have a silent shooting mode, which can be useful for wildlife photography even though it records at fewer frames per second when it's used.
+beamwalker I think Canon prefers the softer film look. Even 5Dmkiii image is this soft. Is it a preference? I don't know. But definitely if you want sharp then go with GH4 or Sony! I think there was something to be said, however, about the softer skin tone that results from the softer image. Chris looked younger in this video than the other ones shot on the FS7! LOL!
+beamwalker I was thinking the same. You can clearly see sharp beautiful stills images when shown in the video, but once it goes to motion it's pretty soft. Actually a few times it seemed like the autofocus was hitting Chris's ears just past his face.
+RealWorld Endo No, because they are too lazy to implement full sensor readout and still use line skipping for video, the 5Dmkiii uses a lazy downscale algorithm that produces soft images. Bottomline is, Canon still want to protect their Cinema line which is that is being ate up by other companies.
6:40 you can use the dials to change the focus points the one goes vertically and the other goes horizontally I tried it on the 70D and I think that it works on the 80D as well...
Awesome review guys - so well done! Thanks for sharing! As much as I respect this camera, I can't help but feel like buying an 80D would be like eating my vegetables... good for me, but I'd rather have some of that sweet creme brulee Sony's serving.
oasisbeyond Andrea over at SonyAlphaRumors just weighed in on the size debate... but yeah, I film more, so the 4K and higher frame-rates are more appealing to me personally. Sony's not making perfect cameras either, though they do seam to be trying to push the envelope these days, and fortune tends to favour the bold :)
Phenomenal review as usual guys! So Jordan, for video use (and maybe stills too) with nice EF mount glass like the Sigma 18-35, or the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS ii, do you prefer the 80D, or the a6300? You kind of have me inclined to give an 80D a try to supplement my GH4, even though it doesn't have FS5 image quality. Lol
no reason but canon needs to keep pushing out products and keeping Sony pushing the limits so I like seeing other companies trying to fight back otherwise Sony will just become lazy.
+insainllama It depends on what you do with your camera. If you shoot stills then the AF is far more reliable and accurate on the Canons. Much better to hold in the hand too, assuming you are male and have normal sized hands. Sony like to throw in everything but the kitchen sink, but many features are sub-standard. Who wants an 11fps camera which does not have a good enough AF to consistently and accurately keep up with it? It comes down to taste, but I prefer the image quality out of the Canons and especially colour rendition straight out of the camera. I couldn't live without a touchscreen now that I have got used to it.
+insainllama Flip screen, touch screen, headphone input, much more lenses to choose out of, better menu structure, better grip to hold. Also, don't expect the a6300 FullHD to look better than the 80D FullHD. a6300 only shines when filming 4k. FullHD is quite soft so if you get the a6300 make sure your computer is able to handle 4k.
I thought only videos filmed in 4K can do full size when watching on iPhone X RUclips app but this one works!?? Why do some videos not go full screen with the pinch?
+Alexander Rex Evensen ,I'm sure Jordan is not a pro vlogger and forgot the selfie stick or the gorillapod to push away the camera but give him a couple of weeks and we'll see him all over youtube's recommended.
Chris was shooting our comparison samples for dynamic range & high ISO when I shot that B-Roll and accidentally included it in the montage. Nothing nefarious. Jordan @ TCSTV
I haven't seen anyone do a solid test on the HDR footage from the camera. As of now it looks like a gimmicky feature - how does it hold up to the Magic Lantern HDR (that was super duper limiting). Can you do pans and high motion content with it or is it really just for static landscape type work? That is my big question.
Mmm.. that soft, low-detail canon look.. Slowly they can start promoting these cams as retro "experience the beginning of the DSLR revolution.. the spirit of 2010!".
jmtennapel Only video, of course. These are fine photo cameras I presume - not too far away from the competition anyway. The problem is that this cam has a big fuss about it due to its utility in video applications, yet it uses really outdated solutions unfortunately, with an exception of its AF system.
The revelation is made at 00:53 (that the video is being shot with an 80D) but I already new it from the start - (I missed the initial message, while adjusting size and resolution for viewing). Now, I am not saying that Canon imagery overall quality is the best out there and it probably is a factor that I am a exclusively-Canon user but, I must say, there's something about their contrast, color and tone quality that really sets them apart. I love it and I saw it here, right from second "6".
+NimbusKhan NK Yup I definitely agree. Nikon sensors have had great dynamic range and sharpness compared to Canon sensors, but the color that comes off their sensors is just disgusting to me :P
Your videos are so good that I already started watching videos for cameras I would never even consider buying.^^ Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany
I think you should do another comparison now that the T7i and 77d are out and highlight the differences. It would be really great to know how the significantly cheaper T7i(same focus system as the 80D) compares to the 80D and whether the 80D is still worth the extra money in late 2017.

Hey chris, what lens r u using on ur 80d for ur shooting style reviews? Im doing similar shots to urs on my channel and im wondering what lens to get with my new canon 80d

80D and A.D.D do sound very similar ;)
yeah Canon definitely has attention deficit disorder.. attention for innovation that is.. still the same video quality as the five year old 550D
+tvurk canon or their customers?
+fsociety - I understand your rant.
However, you need to understand Canon's point of view on this.
The 80D is a camera for photography. Asking them for 4k video and 120fps/240fps video in their range of photography cameras seems dumb.
Their range of video cameras do do this easily.
Their point is, you want to shoot video, buy a video camera.
And if it helps, Sony and Panasonic make DSLRs that shoot videos really well and shoot sub-par photographs.

It not their fault. You get what you pay for.
John Benson 70D was cheap and did excellent video for the time. Canon is not competing with the gh5 the a 80d should have been 4K.
It's "T" Society...too much Mr Robot for you +John Benson!!

The focus pull alone makes this stand out, even still in 2019 👍
"The E-aws 80D" ...
For your problem at 6:50, don't use that to move the focusing point. Use the two wheels. The lower wheel moves them perfectly vertically and the trigger wheel moves them horizontally.
Why did you use a 5d at 2:11?
I like the colors in this video so much more than your previous videos.
If I were a primary videographer but still wanted a solid stills camera, would the 80D be more suitable than the Sony A6300?
Both have their strengths, but I went A6300 for the better dynamic range, 120P and EVF.

Anyway, I can make a lovely video with 7D and it has nothing to do with technicality, even though there are some areas I'm sure 4K and good details are appreciated. Still, 80D is a cool camera and sure it is an improvement from 70D
Yes, I agree with that.
+Dani Timo
Absolutely agree - looks movie-like this video - you wouldn't want sharper unless you're doing The Hobbit 2.
8:18 The 80D does have a silent shooting mode, which can be useful for wildlife photography even though it records at fewer frames per second when it's used.
So Easy to Listen to, subscribed.
Thanks for such an informative video.
I am diagnosed with 80D and had serious trouble focusing on Chris when he was walking from left to right, front to back, for two and a half minute.
Video quality seems a little underwhelming to me. Still very soft compared to the competition.
+beamwalker Yup.
Jordan @ TCSTV
+beamwalker I read somewhere the Canon up samples its 1080p footage from a 1200x1000 actual resolution scan
Jordan @ 5:55 in your video i saw Manual Selection in your display. Today i bought one and i dont see that. Am i doing something wrong?
Anand
Are you Rob McElhenney?
6:40 you can use the dials to change the focus points the one goes vertically and the other goes horizontally I tried it on the 70D and I think that it works on the 80D as well...
you forget to mention that kit lens come with 80d is not stm its usm
BASAM MOHAMED It comes with an sTM variant too.
The best review i've seen on the 80d.
I'm back from the future, guys, the 90D is way better than the 80D !
he is using 24-105mm f1.2 L usm XII
no way
Perhaps if you let Nikon in on what you learned about the 90D they would compensate you for that knowledge. :)
It’s still not out ;-;
hahah
Awesome review as always guys! As well as I've been watching you guys for quite a while and wow @Chris do you take some fantastic pictures!
Awesome review guys - so well done! Thanks for sharing! As much as I respect this camera, I can't help but feel like buying an 80D would be like eating my vegetables... good for me, but I'd rather have some of that sweet creme brulee Sony's serving.
+Chris Prouse Sony might be smaller but not with the lenses they have. it's bigger in the end. 4k is nice though, if you film more.
oasisbeyond Andrea over at SonyAlphaRumors just weighed in on the size debate... but yeah, I film more, so the 4K and higher frame-rates are more appealing to me personally. Sony's not making perfect cameras either, though they do seam to be trying to push the envelope these days, and fortune tends to favour the bold :)
With Chris's ADD and Canon's 80D this review can't miss!
Lol
i'm a 70D owner...and i can say this is the only way to change it ..the 80D must be greater for sure ..thanks for the nice and professional review
I still just can't see why I'd get this over a Sony a6300. but I guess it's good to see canon isn't staying still.
no reason but canon needs to keep pushing out products and keeping Sony pushing the limits so I like seeing other companies trying to fight back otherwise Sony will just become lazy.
truth
+insainllama It depends on what you do with your camera. If you shoot stills then the AF is far more reliable and accurate on the Canons. Much better to hold in the hand too, assuming you are male and have normal sized hands. Sony like to throw in everything but the kitchen sink, but many features are sub-standard. Who wants an 11fps camera which does not have a good enough AF to consistently and accurately keep up with it? It comes down to taste, but I prefer the image quality out of the Canons and especially colour rendition straight out of the camera. I couldn't live without a touchscreen now that I have got used to it.
+shaolin95 What limits are being pushed and actually work properly?
+insainllama
Flip screen, touch screen, headphone input, much more lenses to choose out of, better menu structure, better grip to hold. Also, don't expect the a6300 FullHD to look better than the 80D FullHD. a6300 only shines when filming 4k. FullHD is quite soft so if you get the a6300 make sure your computer is able to handle 4k.
Love when Mike Drew shows up in your videos!
I hope 2017 brings a 7D MKIII
Doubt it.
Ery Alves 2019
This is the best review I've seen in a while. Very well done!
"for anyone that doesn't like well named cameras" hahaha
I thought only videos filmed in 4K can do full size when watching on iPhone X RUclips app but this one works!?? Why do some videos not go full screen with the pinch?
it would be a beast with c-log, 4k and higher fps.... 👍
+Lukas Mat Which would destroy sales for the more expensive cameras so no, not going to happen. Mostly likely won't even see it on the 5d mark iv.
Well, the 90d exists now and it is pretty much that
Just bought mine today - can't wait for it to get here tomorrow !
That 24mm is not enough for selfie shooting IMO, much too close :P You're like all over my screen, very in my face.
+Alexander Rex Evensen ,I'm sure Jordan is not a pro vlogger and forgot the selfie stick or the gorillapod to push away the camera but give him a couple of weeks and we'll see him all over youtube's recommended.
@@IvanJoseHurtadoBaron A DSLR on a selfie stick? How strong are your wrists?
Thank you for your review been playing around what camera to get after having the 7d for many years
lol ADD, 80D, lol
I was thinking the exact same thing. Should've skipped to 90D
I've got the 80D and it makes takin pictures real hard.
+Tyler Breeden lol
+Black Warrior Lures True story, sadly, but different camera. ;)
where is the 4k video canon?
I've seen duck face, and now I've seen dear face 7:29
did Jordan graded the video and add sharpening? do you think the video in this camera is better then the 70D?
+יוחאי מור Yes, I did some light grading and sharpened the image. The video is much less prone to moire and aliasing than the 70D.
Jordan @ TCSTV
The headphone jack moment was brilliant!! Had me laughing.
which lens will be best for professional product photo shoot on this camera?
im thinking about Tamron 24-70 2.8
The canon A.D.D has trouble focusing...
That music at headphone jack reveal was so epic ROFL!
80D...A.D.D...80D...A.D.D....sounds similar as you're saying throughout the video :-)
If You were testing out the 80D and the entire video was shot on another 80D then 2:11 what the hell 5D Mark III was doing there? 😤
Please Explain...
Chris was shooting our comparison samples for dynamic range & high ISO when I shot that B-Roll and accidentally included it in the montage. Nothing nefarious.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Thanks for clearing my doubt....
:)
Sounds like Canon has ADD.
my canon 80 d half way shutter is not working and i do not find images sharp? can you please help me to fix it ?
I think Jordan has a bit of jealousy to Casey Neistat ... It was totally uncalled for, not saying his name correct....
lol or maybe he was just joking
or it doesnt really matter
Or he probably didn't know how to pronounce his name, which is fair enough.
seems to be a good camera before purchase of a 1Dx Mark II ... or what will be the next 5D or 1D series.
Asian Colin Farrell! :D
THX!!!! Was thinking I'm the only one to see it!!!
How effective is the technicolor cinestyle in solving the lack of log profile?
ADD ADD ADD ADD
I haven't seen anyone do a solid test on the HDR footage from the camera. As of now it looks like a gimmicky feature - how does it hold up to the Magic Lantern HDR (that was super duper limiting). Can you do pans and high motion content with it or is it really just for static landscape type work? That is my big question.
Mmm.. that soft, low-detail canon look..
Slowly they can start promoting these cams as retro "experience the beginning of the DSLR revolution.. the spirit of 2010!".
+Daten Raten Are you judging the photographic quality based upon a youtube video? Or are you talking about the video?
jmtennapel
Only video, of course. These are fine photo cameras I presume - not too far away from the competition anyway. The problem is that this cam has a big fuss about it due to its utility in video applications, yet it uses really outdated solutions unfortunately, with an exception of its AF system.
Daten Raten blame it on the RUclips compression stuff
After shooting on RABALs for multiple years.. sorry, I don't buy that. These cams are inherently crippled for video.
Lol. "Nuh-stat style"
How about the lense? is't sharper? is USM better than the old STM kit lense??? please advice... and thank you for the helpfull review
80D, 8DD, ADD...
Attention deflicit disorder
Great focus for sure. Maybe the 90d will have 4k and be a smaller body.
+wyo russ and rename it Canon EOS M4.
Great Review! You and MichaelTheMentor have so far done the best review on this camera.
What are your thoughts on this Camera VS the A6300 for a first camera. I will also be using the kit lense for at least a year.
Spot on review, especially about the dynamic range. The 80D is everything the 70D should have been. Such a good camera.
Your videos are so good that I already started watching videos for cameras I would never even consider buying.^^ Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany
+Wadim Liz
It's all about education!
Great Review! I just picked one of these up as our primary camera! we have a 7d and 70D so we are excited to see the 80D getting glowing reviews!
I think you should do another comparison now that the T7i and 77d are out and highlight the differences. It would be really great to know how the significantly cheaper T7i(same focus system as the 80D) compares to the 80D and whether the 80D is still worth the extra money in late 2017.
