    Cool. I have a few more 70D videos and have lots more planned. It really is an excellent camera. Happy to answer questions now or when you get your hands on it. Enjoy!

    For a beginner to video it means very little - it has nothing to do with audio(mostly) and just means you cannot hook up an external hard drive device dedicated to capturing video direct to the device - bypassing the SD card. You do have a mic in port that you can connect a variety of audio recorders to avoid syncing in post. You can also record separately. Happy to chat about this more.

  • @photorectoby

    Yes -there is a dedicated button near the shutter for quick selection of focus type and point.

    Man... you REALLY do a good job reviewing. I've watch atleast 10 other youtubers reviewing this camera and your review... by far... is the most *clear and concise ... straight to the point ... no minced words*.
    I don't miss much and can clearly see you don't either. Impressive.
    I felt like you went straight to the heart of the camera from jump. Now I see why this has 46k+ views.

      Thank you. And I am always happy to answer questions.

    The 18-135 is very good for a kit lens and a great place to start. Consider adding a prime lens for your lower light shots. I have a whole video on those and I am happy to chat more. Would appreciate if you used my links under video to purchase. Thanks!

    In my recent video assisting I have been shooting with C100 - still haven't had a chance to carefully look at files but that is a big and specialized jump up from 70D or even 5DM3.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Consider Magic Lantern Software - it is custom firmware, not available for 70D yet but will be soon (probably) and would allow you to get around limit. Also offers loads of nifty features.

  • @photorectoby

    Thanks - I feel much better having solid real world use to share- I often discover things in weeks 3-4 that I hadn't run into in the first week or two of shooting/using.

  • @photorectoby

    don't have problems with any of the buttons except the wheel. Backbutton AF is awesome and you should, if you haven't already turn off AF for the shutter button and just go full BBF ;) Headphone jack would be soooo nice.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Tough call. You probably will be better off with a few more lenses(though I don't know what you have now) - 70D does offer faster burst rate and more professional controls - helpful is shooting sports but for general gigs the 650D can do just fine.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Someone else just contacted me and asked a similar question. They had just bought 6D and were wondering if they should spend the extra money on a 5DM3. I advised NO - keep the 6D and spend the savings on a nice lens (or two) and those lenses will move with you in the future. I am not sure if I will get a review done of the 6D anytime soon. I'd like to but would have to rent for at least a week which is pricey. Happy to chat about this with you more.

    I hear that but that applies to all of the DSLRS except for Sonys and the Panasonic - both of which aren't actually DSLRS. and they do make loupes/clip on devices for the viewfinders in these situations.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Depends on how you use the camera. Just walking around taking photos - probably not. But if you want a much more capable focusing system during video - yes. And depends on your long term photography goals.

    5D Mark 3 with 24-70 f/2.8 II. Pretty sweet combination.

    STM - it is the newer tech from Canon that has optimized motors for video - focus is smoother.

    I am excited about the Video side and also the options of HDR or Night Portrait. I also think it will be an update for low light photo's

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    it really means neither - it gives you slightly more fine tune editing control and supposedly better quality but the quality difference isn't something one would notice. I would think that green screen would work equally well in either setting.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    nope - when in live view or recording video the mirror flips up which blocks the viewfinder.

    I just checked on the C line again and I believe it's just the C500 that shoots in higher bit depths than 8. The 100 and 300 still use CODEC's that record at 8-bit (Canon XF and AVCHD). I could be wrong, but I believe that is correct.

  • @web95
    @web95 11 лет назад

    Wow, quick reply! I was still watching the video, lol.
    Good to know, thanks! Did Canon stick with h.264 as the video CODEC or did they switch to something better? The problem with 8-bit video is that you don't get as clean a separation with chroma green as you would with 10-bit. Thanks again!

    Ahhh I see. Thanks for the reply. Great channel & reviews btw... You actually the cover the important stuff that matters to most people I think.
    Im heavily debating btwn the Canon 70d & Nikon D7100 right now for video work and stills. Mainly focussing on the video part of both cameras to decide as Im becoming more involved with video. Wish the 70D had a headphone jack & no moire/aliasing issues like it does.... biggest con's in the 70d column (& win for D7100) so far from what I have seen.

    I'm a novice to DSLR. I had a 60D, but the 70D is superior in every respect. He is right, the AF in basic, SCN and Movie modes is faster, more accurate and reliable so far. Image quality was an improvement in clarity and contrast. LCD panel and an articulating touch screen is functionally important. 70D feels & handles well. If you are looking for used, this is a good one w/warranty.

    Great video Toby! I'm saving up for my 70d :D at the moment I'm borrowing a 600d from a friend and I'm already seeing problems with noise at ISOs 1600+ and the 1/4000s max shutter speed.
    Although Magic Lantern makes the camera much more feature rich and I would say that Magic Lantern could fix the problems with the 70d such as the non-clean HDMI out and no video recording in wifi mode

    Nice review Toby. It's possible for you to review the Canon 6D for us? I would love to see your thoughts about the 6D. Currently I thinking between 5D Mk3 or 6D, but here in Germany you have to pay round about 1000€ more for the 5D Mk3 :( For 1000€ you can get for example a Sigma 35mm 1.4 or something else...

    Nope - The viewfinders in these cameras are optical so they cannot simulate the effects of ISO or shutter speed. They can show you a depth of field preview, when you press the button but that is it.

    Hey Toby. I have a question for you. I currently have a Canon T3i, 3 lenses (50mm 1.8, 18-55mm kit and 75-300mm), a borrowed Gopro, 3 cheaper tripods, Zoom H1 and some DIY equipment. My sister has a wedding coming up in June and I plan on making a wedding video for her as a gift. I'm taking advantage of this opportunity to sharpen my portfolio and gather hands on experience with wedding videography. I have about $1500 to spend on a second camera. My question is - Canon 70d with 18-135mm or second T3i (if I can find one) / T5i body, and use the remaining money on other miscellaneous items? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks in advance!!

    hi, i'm thinking about to buy 70D, but i have question, most important for me: how long video can you make in one shot? i think, 60D was able to make 15 minutes in one shot. and that's not too much, if you do for instance a whole wedding ceremony ...

    Live View seems to be the only way to get fairly sharp photos compared to viewfinder. However, I used Live View today while photographing an outdoor car show and all the images were fuzzy. The 70d is kind of hit and miss on focusing. Many people are having this problem.

    Spectacular review! Not a bad sweater either! Quick question, I'm in the market for a DSLR to record fitness workouts, food prep at home and vlogging! T3i or 70D? I'm leaning towards the 70D because I love the auto focus feature. I've seen videos filmed by the T3i and it seemed as if it was a tad bit difficult to focus. Just undecided and don't know if the 70D is worth the price. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

    Coupling the WiFi with Shuttersnitch on iOS (not sure if it's on Android yet) and this thing is pretty sweet. This is especially great for event photography where you can't practically carry a laptop with you. You'll always have your phone with you, or maybe an iPad that's much easier to fit into your camera bag so you can throw them up there as soon as you take them then review them all when you get a moment, or just hand it to your assistant or friend or something and they can do that for you.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 лет назад

    Good review. I've started using vintage Pentax lenses via a PK adapter on my 70D. Amazing 3D quality and lovely bokeh / out of focus areas. They are cheap enough too - mine were my own from the early 1980s. Fully manual though so you might need a variable ND to 'adjust' the exposure for depth of field. The 70D is a great video DSLR. I find it a bit noisy compared to full frame.

    just a quick question Toby, I have been watching number of videos and have finally decided 70D over D7100 Nikon, but was wondering how better is 70D over 7D, I am talking in terms of picture quality and HDR processing, also I am not a big fan of video recording, like I never do or will do video recording. In this case, what camera would you suggest if video recording is completely taken away from the comparison, 70D, 7D or Nikon D7100? Also I will never go beyond 400 ISO, so comparing low light performance above 800 or 1000 max doesn’t matter at all.
    Please do consider the cost factor too, would buying a 2nd hand 70D can be risky? Especially, considering the touch screen and battery life of the camera. I mean, how often is the touch screen malfunctions (not a big fan of smart phones) and the battery life deteriorates?
    Thanks Toby, I think I will wrap up my search completely after your reply.

    • @srobart
      @srobart 11 лет назад

      I own the D7100 and I can tell you that the pictures it spits out are phenomenal. They are tack-sharp and there's a ton of dynamic range that's easy to pull out using something like Lightroom. The lack of the AA (OLPF) filter really allows it to take sharp, clear images. I have taken a couple of macro shots that left my jaw hanging, I wasn't even aware that pictures COULD be that sharp right out of the camera.
      I am in the opposite boat, though. I have switched almost exclusively to video, so the 70D's focusing system is REALLY appealing to me, even though the D7100 technically has better features as far as video goes. I think for video, the 70D is just too good to pass up, but if I was doing ONLY photography, I would definitely go for the D7100.
      Toby did a great D7100 vs 70D video that you can find on his channel here on youtube, MichaelTheMentor did another one. Both seemed to come to the conclusion that the 70D was the winner for video and the D7100 was better for photography and this seems to be the general consensus on the web, as well. I regularly push my D7100 to 4000 ISO without too much of an issue, so you wouldn't have anything at all to worry about below 1000. I shoot exclusively RAW though, so I can't speak as to the way the jpegs look. I shoot primarily macro, too and I love the D7100 for that type of photography.
      Never say never about video recording...if the bug bites you, you'll get hooked. ;)
      Best of luck in your decision.

      HELP
      I have now sold all my lenses but 2... The 18-135mm STM and the 50 1.8.
      Would you think this combination is sufficient for my 70D:
      1) Canon 10-18 STM
      2) Sigma 18-35mm
      3) Sigma 50mm 1.4 (Art great review👍)
      4) Canon 100mm L 2.8
      5) Canon 70-200 II IS or Tamron 70-200VC to replace the 18-135 STM
      I shoot 2 hrs of Church video (sermons and events) every weekend.
      And stills: events, portrait, landscape and night...

    70d looks good all around but would the mk3 be a better choice for taking great landscape pics. If I did that I can only buy one lens! Which one would you suggest for landscape . Thanks

    hi Toby, i really like your in depth analysis and excellent reviews of dslrs cameras. i dont really like the bulk of dslrs and think that mirrorless cameras like sony nex 6 can create a paradigm shift by allowing more portability and providing similar quality and features as the dslrs and also on similar price points. i would really appreciate if you can provide your analysis on the image quality comparison and other trade-offs with sony nex 6 compared to dslrs like canon and nikon. if possible, a video comparison would really benefit me and help me decide. i am just an enthusiast who is learning photography and want to have the best image quality using the APS-C size sensors within 1000 bucks

    The manual says the 70D does have a mini-HDMI out; so it appears you can send out a direct HDMI signal for post edit after all.

      It is compressed HDMI -good enough for viewing, not for editing. That's the difference.

    Hi Toby, I'm hoping you can give me a hand with some lens advice for the Canon 70D. I'm looking to purchase this camera to use for product clothing/model shoots so would like to get a lens that will work for this purpose. I also want to be able to do close up macro shots to show stitching detail, fabric weaves etc. I was looking at the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM as I did quite like the look of the macro feature. However, the salesperson at my local store thought that the 19-135 STM Canon lens would be the better option for me? He didn't seem to be much of a fan of Sigma, so not too sure if it was just purely a recommendation on brand, and not my requirements.

      If you want to do easy video the STM lenses are important if just photographing the Sigma 17-70 is excellent. truthfully I don't remember it doing any better macro work than the kit but it is overall a better photo lens.

    I am considering purchasing the 70D as a kit with the EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6 STM and the 55 - 250mm F/4/5.6 IS II. The price seems very attractive, $1300, and I'm wondering if this is good value and is this equipment appropriate for my upcoming trip to the Serengetti. Thanks for your help.

      Hi Harvey - it is a very good value. I do suggest you get the STM version of the 55-250 though - it is a little bit sharper and will let you crop to zoom a little more for those safari photos. B&H currently has best deal with a free bag, SD card and spare battery included www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/986390-REG/canon_8469b009_canon_eos_70d_dslr.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287

    one more question..I know my older EF & EFS lenses will work on the new 70D but I don't want to forsake image quality to save $500. That said, I'm going to Australia and New Zealand in April so I want to make sure I have a good system for great photos

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  11 лет назад

      Remind me the older lenses you have? Some older lenses will do just fine but many of the newer lenses - even the cheap ones have improved optics and coatings which will increase image quality. Video focusing can also be negatively impacted by older, slower lenses. But yes they will all work.

    Have you tried the EYE-FI card as a transitional back up for your photos? Do you think that doing this wifi to computer tranfers would make up for the lack of space?

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  9 лет назад

      REGINALD GREEN I do use Eye-fi cards but only to transfer selected images to mobile devices. I would not use them to transfer all images/backup - that is a big drain on battery life.

    Very helpful. Thanks. Just got a 70D at Christmas to replace my 40D. The video seems intriguing but since I bought the body only, would you recommend a good external microphone $150-200 or a STM lens to get rid of the focusing noises? I'm pretty happy with my lenses now so the additional lens would not really complement what I have. 10-20 Sigma 3.5-5.6, 24-70L 2.L mk 1, 15-85 efs, 50 1.8, 70-200L f/4, 70-300 non L, 100-400L.

      You can grab a zoom like the H4n and wire it with a long audio cord to avoid all lens noise www.amzn.com/B001QWBM62/?tag=emaildpr-20 - I have some tests that I shot but haven't carefully analyzed with a Rode mic mounted on the camera. I hope to get those up soon.
