    Very nice video, Peter! I too own a 70D. After too much of initial confusions with 60D/70D, I decided to shell out the extra money on 70D and it is worth each penny I would say..Amazing focus system.
    Btw, you have mentioned 18-35mm STM in the final part of your video ;) I think it should be 18-135 mm

    The problem is this - when shooting raw the software on the computer will use the default settings assigned to that camera. For ex, Lightroom will not use the camera settings but the default settings for the 7D every time it import pictures into the program. You have to correct the problem IN LIGHTROOM not the camera. Then set LR to default to your settings and not the settings it is using now. There quite a bit more to it, but this will send you in the right direction.

  • @PeterGregg

    I agree with your apples and oranges point, but none of the others. Different positions, vastly different lenses one super high grade and the other low grade, different ISOs, different DOF, different lighting FOV. F/1.4 verses F/3.5. The GH3 sensor, smaller than both of these puts out even better video than both. The "look" the crop/full frame camera puts out is a direct result of the photographers skill and not the sensor size. Many people have that part wrong.

    The camera setting need to be on JPG LARGE. Get your instruction book and read how to set the camera to different size images and picture quality. That is where you will find how to change those settings. Also read how to use the Q or Quick Menu - there is a Q button on the back of the camera. It is another way to quickly see what the settings are and at what size image you are shooting. Sounds like you have a little bit of reading to do :)

    Focus aside(clearly), to the trained eye, image quality with the d800 is so far ahead it clearly points out what DXO mark idicates. Especially considering that this even stands out on youtube video.

    Great video. FYI I use a Canon XM2 video camera (Standard Def) - I always wondered why they couldn't use or redesign a chip for the dslr. That video camera excels at auto focus and auto white balance. It uses mini DV tape. As I would like to replace my Canon 20D I thought this 70D would fit the bill but I might just wait for the 7D?? for h'phone and twin card.

    The auto-focus on the SLT is not as good as the 70D, in my opinion of course. Others may have a different point of view. The SLT focus design is harsh and too quick to look natural and it makes it pretty abrupt. The 70D was tuned in to make it look like a pro focuser person from Hollywood was running the camera for you. It has a "look" to it and I think that is what is causing a heck of a lot of commotion over this camera. It isn't perfect, not trying to make it the holy grail, but it is GOOD.

    You have a wonderful style of communication, entertaining and informative. I have the 70D with 18-135 kit lens & a 40mm STM. I also have a Canon SX50 HS the last upgrade from pervious bridge cameras before taking the DSLR plunge to raise the quality of video & especially stills/portraits of growing grandchildren. What other lenses would you think essential for portraits & landscapes to consider in the future. I am retired & travel a lot so the SX50 HS should cope with the tele end? Thanks, Steve

    3:15 - Mentioning DxO mark almost had me close the video right there and then. Gotta check if you used better glass, there's supposed to be focusing issues with the center spot at bigger apertures.

    While watching your video and keeping a close eye on how the cameras switch from one to another as you talk I notice that the Canon D70 has a much better focus than that of the Nikon ____ (what ever!)
    You stated that the website that rates the two cameras you were currently using rated the NIKON wayyy upwards to #1 whereas the Canon almost fell out of the bottom of the ratings... I don't think that who ever rated the two paid much attention to the focusing of the Canon vs. the Nikon. Just a simple observation.

    Great camera for video as you say, HOWEVER for stills, there are issues with the centre focus point when using the viewfinder with a lens at an aperture of 2.8, 1.8, 1,4. Those images are soft! BUT focus on the same subject with live view and bam! tack sharp! There are quite a number of videos on this problem on RUclips but Canon doesn't seem to acknowledge it exists! When using apertures above 2.8 no problem!

    your idea of dxomark iso ratings sort of work for me aswell. mine is a 2011 24mp sensor on a slt rated at 712, up to 1600 is great for prints. 3200 I hardly use, but i guess it would be useful for personal use

Im having a very frustrating and time consuming problem with my 70D, maybe you've come across this as well and have figured out an easy way to fix this "problem". Ok here goes I shoot in RAW on the camera the pics look fantastic once I upload it to my computer several of my photo apps load it with a magenta hue over the pic.

    Your statement is misleading. You may not like Canon, or you may have been expecting something you didn't get. But Moving up to a 20+ megapixel sensor plus putting an extra load at each pixel site and then it still taking a step forward in high ISO ability and low ISO clarity cannot be considered "not improved".
    You sound like you wanted Canon to focus on an aspect you wanted, probably dynamic range, and it didn't happen. Sensors will need a complete redesign before anything major will change.

      Spliffan I think it's fair to say a MUCH better lens on the Nikon D800E. I was concerned about the softness as well - because (with the exception of the auto-focus) the footage from the D800E is beautiful. It's a $2,000 prime lens versus a $550 kit zoom. No contest. I hope you're enjoying your 70D!

    • @Neumah
      @Neumah 10 лет назад +1

      James Jordan Aah ok, that makes sense. The video quality I get from my 70D with my Sigma lens isn't the best in the world, but it sure does the trick for me. Now I just have to get one of those STM lenses for that awesomely quiet auto focus. Oh and yeah, I fucking love this camera. :)

    • @usachef100
      @usachef100 9 лет назад

      Neumah your cámara did not come with the stm lense? i bought mine with the kit lense 18 - 135 stm. if you do not have one, get one right away. the silent focusing is incredible and the video picture is not bad at all. i just turn on the cámara, and it does all the work. no need to focus...it does a pretty good job doing everthing by itself.

    • @PeterGregg
      @PeterGregg  10 лет назад

      MC Haddad Don't let the DXO report make you feel disappointed. The DXO Mark numbers tell you WHEN the image starts its degradation, but not how FAST it takes to slide downwards. So the 70D and most of the Canon cameras actually have a very slow rate of degradation meaning the quality falls off at a slower rate. That is the weak point of the DXO Mark numbers and people feel they have a poor performing camera when it isn't true. You need to know the info from DXO Mark, but it must be combined with the test sites you see online where you can actually compare ISO against ISO of different cameras.

    I have updated the codecs on windows 7 and all my software are up to date as far as Raw is concerned. This does not happen if I use the provided canon software as I have read on forums. I have to convert the picture to say DNG or TIFF before I edit the pics in order to get rid of the hue or else it will also print on the final picture. Completely horrible and a huge step backwards. Any information on how to correct this without jumping through hoops would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Peter!
    I have a Nikon D7000. When I got it I didn't know as much about cameras as I do now. I am sort of dissapointed in the low light video of the nikon because I always have alot of noise in my shots. I am thinking about selling it and buying the canon 70d but I have a few questions. First, how is the image quality of the 70d versus the d7000. And if I buy the canon is it a downgrade or an upgrade. I like photography but I really love making videos, and since I don't have a crew I think the moving screen will help me for checking my shots. I just want to make sure im not making a mistake. Thanks!

    Hi Peter, I want to know which camera you suggest me, Canon EOS 6D or Canon Eos 70D. I will most of all shoots photos inside. Canon 6D is full format camera and without flash but Canon 70d has internal flash and maybe will helps in poor lighting places. I am not interested in so much video recording but I know that this camera (canon 70D) is amazing in video recording.

    • @PeterGregg
      @PeterGregg  10 лет назад +2

      If you are shooting professionally, always go for the best camera available. If you are going to compromise (as we all do) then choose a camera based on features or abilities that you are not willing to give up. The 2 cameras you mentioned are different enough and have a big enough difference in the final look of the images that I can't tell you to choose one over the other because "I like the camera". It is much more about how you like the images it makes. Personally I would choose the 70D, but at my age and experience level, I can make most cameras do what I want them to do. On a non-professional level, I would be happy with either camera for your purposes. For fun video stuff though, I would much prefer the 70D in my family and friends settings. The features on the 70D though, WILL be coming to the other models of Canon cameras as they update them.

      Yes, the 70D is top of the line and excellent with landscapes. If you are going to do mostly landscapes, also look into the Nikon D7100 if you are able to purchase outside the Canon system. it has no AA filter and will yield sharper results with less sharpening.

    I bought 70D. Very happy about it, the only thing is that when I am copying photos from card to my computer, after that when sd card is put back to camera, I can`t view some of them in a camera, It is written "cannot playback image". I thought problem is in sd card, but with other cards still the same. Photos are still on a card, camera just not displaying them. What could it be?

    • @PeterGregg
      @PeterGregg  9 лет назад

      Denis Den I can only guess. i would say a file, or some files the camera needs to be able to read the card are gone. They are getting deleted somehow. Look at the card before you do anything, and then after you are done. See if some files are missing.

    the Panasonic GH4
    the or the cannon 6D

    I also do a lot of shooting by myself and shoot scenes with the camera on a tripod..
    another dilemma is the amount of lens choices I would have if I bought the GH4 compared to the Cannon Camera's. is there a big difference would I get my money's worth and be satisfied with the amount of lenses with the GH4 or should I just go with the 6D or 70D?
    Please help. Which would be the best video quality with photo quality and best over all camera for my interest?
    Thank you for your time.

      hi Joshua... if you are getting into video, i would suggest the 70D. I have one. As you saw in this video, the autofocus on the canon is incredible...you can select face tracking and when your subject moves, it will autofocus on the face. No other camera does this as well as the canon. all other dslrs, you have to manually focus and it is a bitch. I also have a canon t3i and it is pain to shoot video with...if your subject moves forward just a tad, you have to focus. apart from the video, it takes really good pictures. so you pretty much have a powerhorse at your hands. good luck!

      Nazakat Khan Thanks for your comments :) I am glad you enjoy the videos. I would look for organizations in your part of the country (world) where they support the arts and see how they are interacting with the local artists in terms of support. I do that in my local area, and your area should have something like that also!
