    Ok so I’m really late to the party on this video but I thought I’d share my experience. I used an a6300 for about a year and never really felt connected to the camera. It did have some pretty good sharpness but I would always find that my images felt unnatural and always had artifacts showing up everywhere. This week I picked up an 80D after really missing being in that canon ecosystem and man, I can’t describe how well the 80D produces imagery and video. Even now in 2018. It feels so natural and composes itself so well in any situation. I feel like Sony tries so hard to get the technical aspect of their cameras right that they forget how important it is to create properly composed images. Lots of people say that canon is behind in the camera race but I think they are just taking time trying to perfect new hardware. Sure you can get a camera that shoots 4K but most of the time in my experience the footage is never really that good. Moire everywhere, aliasing, strange artifacts, and so much more, not to mention that in the budget 4K camera market there are always corners that are cut to give that camera the ability to shoot 4K. So it’s sort of a win lose situation.

Even though you have gear or use gear from one manufacturer (Canon) the most, I find that your findings are seriously very unbiased which is good for your viewers. I used this Camera to shoot an event recently and found it very user friendly, while it's not a full from camera it is indeed an excellent camera. The one thing that I noticed immediately was the battery life, I shot 13+ hours on one battery. I also loved the built in wifi and the headphone jack were very welcomed extras. Another very welcome feature was the poseable touch screen. I am shooting from a wheelchair while recovery from an injury and the moveable touchscreen made my work a lot easier.
    I chose this camera because it offered me so much more than, some of the other and it had several features such as the headphone jack, touchscreen and wifi that even the full frames couldn't offer. All in All I really liked it, despite the slower shutter speeds and iso.

      Good feedback, Johnny. The 80D really offers a lot of "bang for the buck", and I would love the Canon 6D MKII when it comes to be a very similar camera with a FF sensor.

    What is a reasonable SD card that can do the full 25 RAW buffer? I have the Sandisk Extreme 32GB and only get around 19-20 before it starts slowing down.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад

      Is your card UHS-I or UHS-II? The Sandisk Extreme UHS-I card with a write speed of 95mps is as good as you'll get for that.

    • @FrankyboyLegend
      @FrankyboyLegend 6 лет назад

      It's the 32 GB UHS-I and U3, 90MB/s. However, the read speed is only 40MB/s. I was able to get 7-8 RAW frames with the T6s (normal RAW buffer is 6 frames) after which it slowed to around 2fps, but I guess it's still not enough for the 80D.
      Edit, I just did some further testing:
      23 at ISO 100
      21 at ISO 1600

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад

      You’re getting pretty close. Getting a card with a better WRITE speed is the most important (that’s where the slowdown is), With a faster card you’ll probably squeeze a few more frames in the buffer. My experience is that Canon lenses exceed the buffer rating (like you found with the T6s)

    here is the info about the sensor of 7DmarkII, your info is wrong around 2:00
    20.2 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and ISO 100-16000
    The EOS 7D Mark II has a newly designed 20.2 Megapixel sensor that delivers high-resolution image files with stunning detail and impressive clarity. Optimized for low-light shooting, the EOS 7D Mark II's sensor captures images at up to ISO 16000 (expandable to H1: 25600, H2: 51200) with remarkably low noise, thanks to its improved, higher sensitivity design. Phenomenal for stills, the EOS 7D Mark II's sensor is equally up to the task for movies, delivering Full HD capture even at rates of up to 60p.

      I do really like the Canon 15-85 as a general purpose lens, though it does not have a large maximum aperture. I haven't used all the variations of the Sigma 18-50, so it's hard for me to comment there.

    Hi Dustin, I'm considering upgrading from my 80D to a 5D4 for professional work. How much better do you think the image quality of the 5D4 is?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      If you have never used full frame before there is a just a difference in the image quality. The bigger sensor allows for smoother color rendition and the handling of light fall-off. Low light performance is better. The 80D has made a lot of strides in all these areas, but the 5D4 is still better. It doesn't show up so much in test charts, but in actual use I'd reach for my full frame bodies for image quality over my APS-C bodies any time.

  • @MaximMuir
    @MaximMuir 8 лет назад

    I have had my 80D since late March. This body handles so much nicer than my current 5DII FF body, I overall prefer using it. The swivel screen was a big addition for me (and I do not do video) that I have wanted for a long time (please canon, put this in at least a new 6DII, PLEASE?). IQ wise-I prefer it for high ISO use-yes-the 5DII has finer "noise", but has horrible purple blooming and crosshatching in the shadows at ISO 6400+ that the 80D lacks. At base ISO 100, not much to differentiate them, other than the 5DII file being more enlargeable. I don't want to upgrade the 5DII until the next iteration of the 5DSr, because the 5DSr will eventually get the sensor DR range improvements the 80D has, so probably at least two more years to wait for that upgrade.
    Thank you very much for this review-just re-iterates what has made this body so great for me!

    do you think a Sigma 18 - 35mm f/1.8, Canon 50mm f/1.4 and a Sigma 50 - 100mm f/1.8 is a good lens kit set for the 80d?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      Sure, although you may want to go with the 50mm f/1.8 STM to give you a good video lens that will focus quietly. I use that combo for a lot of review footage just because it works well (and I have 15 lenses in my kit all worth more than it!!)

    • @eggr17ify

      On my 80d I've used the tamron 24-70mm f2.8 vc, tamron 17-50mm f2.8 vc, Tamron 35mm 1.8 vc, canon 10-18mm STM, kit lens 18-135mm STM and the tamron 70-200mm f 2.8 sp di vc usd. They all work really great but I returned the 24-70 because the focal lengths when including the crop factor didn't really sit well with me I didn't need it. I recommend if you're stuck between the 17-50 and 24-70 go to a shop and compare the two. The 17-50 is specifically made for crop so I notice sharper images. The kit lens is very capable as long as you got good light. Excellent for video, both the kit and the canon super wide with the STM focusing. The tamron 35 prime is also good for video and excellent for portraits and artistic effects. I decided to go with the 35mm instead of the nifty fifty (canon 50mm) I tried them both on my camera and since you have to account for crop factor the 50mm was just too zoomed in for my liking, I couldn't even take a decent photo in the store. The 35mm is really nice because accounting for the crop factor (x1. 6) it's about 56mm. A more usable focal length. I also recommended the tamron 70-200mm f 2.8 sp di vc it's an excellent lens and hold ups well against the competition at a fraction of the price!

    There are rumors about the canon 6d2 releasing in July, what do you think about it? Would it be comparable to 5d4?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад +1

      +林雋庭 All I've seen is the spec list, but I would say that there will be advantages to the 6D II (articulating screen being one of them), but other areas where Canon will make sure it doesn't compare (no 4K, poorer metering system, 1/4000th max shutter speed). At the same the 6D II looks to be a more complete camera than the 6D was

    • @林雋庭-n8b
      @林雋庭-n8b 7 лет назад +1

      Dustin Abbott I have the same feeling about the camera. If the articulating screen and DPAF is real(maybe the image stabilizer?!), I think it would be an awesome product for canon.

    Dear Dustin, I was considering changing my Canon EOS 750D (t6i) for the 80D. After watching/ reading many reviews, I believe it's not worth it from the image quality aspect. I'm not very happy with the noise coming from my camera but i believe the difference to the 80D would be minor. Do you believe that there would be any noticeable difference in IQ?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    Great review. Sadly this camera flew under the radar this year. I was walking through a best buy a couple months ago and saw one on display. I played around with it and it felt great. I had just purchased a Nikon D810 and didn't need another camera. It sorta stuck in my mind though. I knew I wanted a camera like this and kept watching reviews on it. So anyway I got one today and it's really a fine camera. I'm planning on getting the Canon 70-200 f4 lens. I read from others that combo is killer.

      +ValiRossi The Sony a6300 was launching at the same time and got a lot of attention from the blogosphere because of its spec list. It was replaced by the a6500 within 7 months, but the 80D has proven generally excellent despite its lack of 4K video support.

      Worse of course - the 80D is better then all xxD predecessors, but really (and still) can't compete in DR terms with the D7200 - which is one of the best APS-C(DX) sensors ever so far.
      www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EOS-80D-versus-Sony-a-6300-versus-Nikon-D7200___1076_1072_1020

    • @AnthonyMC67
      @AnthonyMC67 7 лет назад

      D500 is a beast of a camera for many other reasons. The dynamic range would have not been the reason for choosing it since dynamic range is not everything that is important about getting great images. I have a 6D and a 7D Mark ii and neither one is superior in DR to many of the popular cameras. But I tell you this, my images are just as good if not superior. D7200 is good camera as well but to say it is better than the 80D it is hard to say. In my opinion, they are all great system, and it is up to who is behind it that can make the real difference.

      I think that Canon should do that calibration for free. Your lenses "work" with the 90D. I've almost always calibrated focus on my lenses with all camera bodies, including the 80D. It has nothing to do with a camera or lenses working but rather the reality that the best results typically come after some work with focus calibration.

    I'd still take a full frame camera with way less features than more features and go crop. At least until they get the ISO down. But I do like the full frame lenses, having the field of view I want, etc. The lenses resolve more detail, I know that is a debated subject but it definitely resolves more detail, it might not be a big deal to some. I thought about the A6300 for 4k but everyone says it's unusable unless it's on a tripod and completely still. The rolling shutter is so bad you can't walk or do small pans. The moire and aliasing seems to be horrible as well. That is something that really bothers me, I don't deal with moire and alias well. Having a 6D now instead of the 5D Mark iii I had to buy the VAF-6D anti alias/moire filter that goes in front of the sensor. I pop it in easily when I'm gonna do video. I prefer it to the one that was in the 5D Mark iii. It doesn't soften the footage anywhere near as much and yet you can't make it alias or moire no matter what you do. The difference is drastic. When I got the 6D coming from the A7R but being used the 5D Mark iii before that, that was the only down side. The focus points, I actually preferred the 6D's -3 cross type, I don't shoot sports or anything. I like the wifi tethering to my iPad Pro, shoot raw but get full jpeg preview. The video looked just as good but the alias and moire was horrible. That filter made it look better than my 5D footage though. Then once you add some sharpness in post it's really not as far behind 4k when it comes to outputting on 1080p on RUclips. I had a 4k video camera for a while but sold it to get my 24-70 2.8 ii. I do miss it, but the 6D is working fine for now as long as I have that filter.

      Yeah, we will all be better with that 5D Mark IV. lol Once I can afford it. The Lord won't let me blow money like I used to. So I have to earn it. If so be it i'll stick with the 6D for years more. I've had God rebuke me before for charging things.

    Thank you for the great review mate! Would have been a beast of a camera if they had outfitted it with 4k video. It's the one reason I might return it and I'm sad about it. :(

      +Apollo Bukowski It's true. I just don't think Canon was there yet with its 4K implementation. We will probably see it on the next generation.

    Sir require your guidance. I am into wildlife and bird photography not a professional though. I have a sigma 150-600mm contemporary lens Canon mount. Will Canon 80D be the right upgrade for me from an entry level canon DSLR which I am currently using. Thanks in advance for your help

    7d mk2 has 20.2Mpix like the 70d so the video is slightly wrong. So the 80d has higher Mpix than 7d mk2. As a 7D mk2 owner I would love the 4 Mpix extra.

      +Thomas Pointer My bad. I thought I remembered the 7D II having the larger sensor.

    Hai sir..
    What's your suggestion for getting more color depth in canon 80D photography.. Please help me, I am always facing low color depth, with my 80 D..

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      That's a very open-ended question. Unless there is something wrong with your camera, I would say that it comes down to either your lenses or your shooting style, as the 80D has Canon's best current APS-C sensor, and it produces very good color depth.

      I usually choose Fine Detail in Canon cameras where available, but you can edit any profile to your preference to increase color saturation, sharpness, etc...to your taste

    @dustin does it have same center point focus issue while using wide aperture like its predecessor 70d ?

    So given the fact that j have the budget what would you recommend 80d or Sony a6500(if I want I could go for the 7sii or 7rii). But I am concerned about the lense selection for Sony's cameras.... need camera for RUclips videos I'll be doing some tutorials on computer science.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад +1

      If you feel like you don't need 4K video, the 80D will be the best handling camera for you. If you need 4K, then go for the a6500.

      Dustin Abbott(null) well, are 4K videos needed for tutorials?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад +1

      I doubt it. I shoot most of my episodes in 4K but downrez them to 1080P for RUclips.

      Dustin Abbott then I'll stick with canon 80d and will add some good lenses to it thank you very much.

      I like the 80D a lot, but the 7DII has the faster burst rate and deeper buffer. It depends on your needs.

    Great work, an excellent video. I have a Canon 70D that just die on me after 2 years of casual use. Canon ask me for $419 to fix it or I can buy a new camera like the 80D. I'm afraid that after a while the 80D just die on me too. I have been using Canon cameras for many years and I love the Canon 70D but I feel that lately Canon it is dropping the ball went it comes to quality on their new cameras. Any thoughts on that? Thank you!

      I've never had any of my Canons fail on me, so that's definitely not my experience. I think you will find the 80D a very nice upgrade to your 70D.

    In terms of low light and dynamic range is 80D better than nikon d7200?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I can't answer that, as I'm not a Nikon shooter.

    One thing I really hate about 60/70/80/6D is that D-Pad otherwise they are excellent cameras. I have been using 70D since last two years and even today that D-Pad for af selection bugs me. I would really like to see Canon bring back joystick on their 6D mk II atleast whenever it comes out.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +Chaitanya Shukla Agreed. At least the feel of the D-Pad has improved on the 80D, though the joystick remains the better option for AF point selection.

    • @ChaitanyaShukla2503
      @ChaitanyaShukla2503 8 лет назад +1

      +Dustin Abbott I rented 80D for a day from my local rental service, compared to 70D I found that on 80D the D-pad was taking a lot of wrong inputs. I find the Nikon cameras in same price range to have better placement of D-Pad compared to Canon's. If Canon doesnt want to give joystick(their mentality of protecting high end cameras) then I would really like to see that D-Pad moved up by about a inch or so just so operating it with thumb becomes easier.
