    Good review Dan. I have the 80D for about 3 weeks now, and it's brilliant for my RUclips videos, and for my purposes as an amateur. I don't need 4K video right now, as I don't have a laptop, desktop or tablet/phone, that can give me full value for upgrading that much. I love the in-camera intervalometer, it's so damn easy to do a time-lapse video. I am now looking to do some slow-mo stuff which I have heard is not so great, but still want to try.

  • @FoodieQueen
    @FoodieQueen 5 лет назад

    Hi I really liked your video - very explanatory. I am a food vlogger and I am also contemplating buying a good camera. I have almost finalized this camera but right now my budget is limited so I have a few questions if you have time to answer me. 1. If I do not buy any lens as of now - will the video quality still be good? Do u have any video clip that you have shot without an additional lens? 2. As Indian streets are very noise so I face a lot of issues with the background noises, so how is the performance of this camera with respect to voice recording? I do have an external Mic that I can attach with it but just wanted to know how this camera fares without any additional gadgets. 3. How is the image stabilization as I have to walk while shooting and I do not want to end in shaky video. 4. How is the video quality at night or low light? 5. How is the auto-focus quick or slow? In fact I have a suggestion for you as I have been searching out a lot regarding these and few more points on this camera but no video talks to clearly about each of these in 1 single video. If you could make a video covering all these aspects - without additional lens or mic - then it would be very helpful & great.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the lens will affect video quality slightly and especially in low light. You will want to be sure the lens has image stabilization if you are doing any vlogging and ideally a constant aperture or get a prime lens as the digital stabilization is just about worthless. This camera's built in mic is no worse than any other camera but it's pretty bad and useless if there is any wind. You will want a Rode Video Micro for sure and the additional mics work well. Autofocus is pretty quick and it's one of the better AF systems in cameras under $1000

    Excellent video, but I have to disagree with your comments about the video capabilities. I have previously owned G7, GH4, Nikon D7200, Sony A6000, Sony A7S, and none of them come near the video quality of the 80D, especially shooting 50P, which is what I use exclusively. As you say, the AF performance wipes the floor with all the others. I've been a working pro tog for over forty years, and this is arguably the best camera I've ever owned - I certainly prefer it to all the other digital cameras I've owned, including 5Dii/iii. The icing on the cake for me is the amazing touch screen performance - in the same league as Panasonic.

    Good video, good review, and good camera, but i have to admit that on this video, YOUR vocal volume levels are way lower than the music and such. Just a recommendation, if you care to receive it... put your final audio track through a volume leveler or balancer. If you're an Adobe guy, then Audition can do it straight from Premiere Pro. Other than that... thoroughly enjoyed this review and I want the 80D for a good mobile video camera. Thanks so much!

    Is the 80D better than the Nikon D7500 for video? There's so many cameras on the market it's hard to choose one.

  • @PaulKretz
    @PaulKretz 6 лет назад +1

    *Does 80D have a continuous AF in photo mode like 70D has?* E.g. the camera still tracking your face (right until the picture is taken) with 10sec timer already counting down. Very useful for distant selfies and making thumb-pics for YT videos if you are a one-man videomaker like me. But I haven't seen "Continuous AF" in menu in all these reviews. So what's the 80D behaviour?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, the 80D does have a continuous AF mode to track moving subjects. I'm not sure how it behaves when using a timer though...can't verify that it continues to track after the shutter is pressed. My guess is it does until the picture is taken but I don't have the camera anymore.

    • @PaulKretz
      @PaulKretz 6 лет назад

      +Dan Watson That's obvious that it has tracking focus. The question was exactly about the timer (called "Continuous AF" in the menu of 70D). Now 200D does not have it and I do not see it in the menu of 80D.

    I'm still running a 50D and having trouble justifying an upgrade. Checked out the 80D in the store and the build quality doesn't seem the same as my 50D. The 7D2 is more of the camera I want, just need a new sensor in it.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      +Clinton Hadenham Yeah, Canon lowered the build of the xxD cameras to a more consumerish body (though still well built) and then the 7D is the new high end APS-C weatherized body. If build is important for you, the 7D2 is the camera. Otherwise, the 80D would still be a major upgrade...even if you can't pour water on it.

    I'm torn between the Panasonic g85 and the canon 80d. I plan to travel with the camera. Landscapes, portraits, and street shooting are important to me. Also some amateur videos. Figured I'd ask since you've reviewed both.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      Hmm. Tough call. I would probably get the 80D unless you plan on shooting 4k video. If 1080p video is good enough, the 80D is great, offers better image quality thanks to the larger sensor, and the autofocus system is better. It doesn't have all the video features of the G85 but it doesn't look like you need it. The G85 does offer better weather sealing which could be good for travel as is the built in image stabilization system but I still think I would lean for the 80D unless you wanted 4k video.

  • @cephotoclub
    @cephotoclub 8 лет назад

    were there any specific lenses you used to question the video quality? Or is it definately just a Canon issue. Im hoping some Canon L primes may give a nice result. Thanks once again for an awesome review.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      I use Canon L lenses...it's not the lens. It's because Canon does not do a full pixel readout for their cameras so they skip lines or use pixel binning to scale the larger megapixels to HD video. Cameras like the Sony A6300 and Panasonic G7 have full pixel readouts and/or oversample to get their video. The quality with a full pixel readout or oversampling is vastly better. Canon has a full pixel readout on the new 5D4 in 4k (though it has a large 1.7x crop factor) but sadly 1080p still uses line skipping so the result is horrible

    • @cephotoclub
      @cephotoclub 8 лет назад +1

      thanks for the info, such a shame in this day and age where technology is available but not used. Canon seem to take there time and introduce things slowly but at least they work when they are introduced. Its a matter of adjusting and taking things into consideration with your limitations of certain equipment like not panning fast with a DSLR to avoid rolling shutter etc. I have found with DSLR esp 5DMiii focusing within infinity is tac sharp but at infinity usually is not. May be just me but im seeing a pattern. So many variables, so many options but at least it does seem canon may be headed in the right direction.

    In Canada, the Canon 70D with 18-135mm lens kit is one sale and $600 ($420 USD) cheaper than the 80D. Which one would you recommend?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      That is a pretty big price difference. It's all about knowing what is better and knowing if that is right for you. If you use this thing for video recording with additional mics, just having a headphone jack might make it worth it. Certainly the photo quality has improved as well but it is really up to you on whether or not it is worth it. If you like to upgrade every 2-3 years, you would probably get $200 more for a used 80D than a 70D so some of that you may get back in resale value.

    Is the 1080P out of the GH4 better than this? Not 4K scaled down in post, but OOC 1080P between 80D and GH4?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      1080p out of the GH4 does still offer more detail but it is closer in quality that I would be tempted towards the 80D for the AF system unless you needed the other missing video features like focus peaking, zebras, flat profiles...stuff like that. For the real improvement, shoot 4k on the GH4 and downscale in post and the 80D doesn't even come close to the detail of the GH4

    An interesting review. For me the 80d is mainly aimed at 70d users or vloggers who are mainly videographers, but who do a bit of photography. I own a 70d as well as the original 7d, and when used together, make on heck of a camera. It's a bit obvious that the quality of the 80d will be better than "previous models", so I suspect use of that term in this video, is a bit subversive.
    I'm not sure constant comparison with Nikon is useful; particularly if the upgrades to this are aimed mainly at 70d users. New vloggers might as well get the 70d, as most of the features seem to be similar, and it will be far far cheaper. If they then want more, they can upgrade or like me, stick with the 70d.
    As for the video quality comparison with the other brands, again, not sure that is useful. Is the image quality good; Yes! Well on my 70d I think it's very good. Do I need more video quality? No! Have I ever looked at a video shot with the 70d and thought: "I could do with more quality?" No! Is knowing that the video quality on the Nikon something that would make me think about switching brands? No. How about the lack of 4k? No! It would therefore be interesting to know why so many reviewers harp-on about which brands video quality is higher than which, as if it's a major impediment to the system they are currently using.
    If you are in the market for 4k, you won't be looking at an 80d. No biggie!… If I didn't know better, after watching this review, I would think the 80d's video quality is no good, which is wrong. It's pretty damn good... Just my 2p

    My 7dMark2 died a few days ago. I urgently need to buy a new one to shoot some videos I have been already hired to do soon. At first I was going to buy again the same camera but I'm thinking that maybe I can save some money if I go with this camera (80d). I mainly shoot video and sometimes photos. I have some doubts about the high ISO noise of the 80d. Have you compared it to the the 7dMark2? I use it to shoot weddings at night. I have read it's better than the 7dm2 and also read that it's worst. What's your opinion on this?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +1

      I have not compared them directly but I have used both and I would say the differences in low light would be minimal if any. I would honestly go for 80D. The touch screen makes changing focus points really nice and you probably don't need the higher frame rate, beefy body, and dual card slots. In theory the 7D2 has better processing due to the dual processors but the 80D is a new sensor and it performed better than I expected so there might be some improved low light abilities on the sensor side as well of the 80D.

      Thanks. True statement right there. It's a tough choice depending on what you shoot and how. The AF performance on the 80D is WAY better than the G85 but the video detail on the G85 is WAY better than the Canon. If you don't need or want 4k, I would be leaning towards the 80D and maybe Canon will jump on the 4k bandwagon soon on these cameras. They can't ignore it forever right?

Though the Nikon D7100/7200 competes a bit more with the 80D when it comes to the body/build quality. The 80D will feel like a better camera than the D5300

      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      +Salvador Marquez I"m guessing you are shooting video so go with the a6300. The controls are finicky but the video quality will match better, the low light results are way better so you could use the 6300 above 1600ISO and the GH4 below, and they both shoot 4k. I still prefer the 80D AF system in video and the touch screen makes it WAY easier to use but you should be good with the a6300: bhpho.to/1XYTJ3G

    hi Dan, on 80d did u test the new 24-105 mark 2? claimed its designed for double AF system like 80d.70 d and 80 d with their kit lenses 18-135 stm and usm are very smooth working for AF photography as well as videography but i am not sure will be same with 24-70 f4 or 24-105!; also i don't know about your favorite Tamron 24-70 2.8:). 2. on the other side for photography with the same budget for 80d, i heard 6d entry full frame is better for high quality photography as well as low light shooting (despite of lacking AF and shutter speed limitation). what do u say based on your great experiencing with all cameras? 3. you mentioned Nikon 7200... the new 7300 is coming! do u think it will be with live view preview capability? (i think this is the only problem on 7200). 4. however, for best sharpness on this new processor, and compatible with AF system, what is your lens recommendation? appreciated for your good videos like always.

      @learningcameras  7 лет назад +1

      I have not yet used Canon's new 24-105 but from what I hear it should be great for the 80D so I would definitely recommend trying it. I personally went with the Tamron just because I needed the F2.8 aperture and Canon doesn't make one with stabilization. The focusing and stabilization is loud though if you are recording with an on camera mic on the Tamron and corner sharpness at F2.8 isn't stellar. Personally, I didn't like the 6D. It was a limited camera compared to the Nikon D750 (though the price is low now) and while the photography images are solid, I just feel it lacks too many features to be a great choice. In video, I would take the 80D any day despite the smaller sensor. Nikon needs to step up AF performance in live view/movie shooting as well as allow aperture control during live view for me to recommend it for video. Right now, the Nikon's are too limited unless you go with the D750 or up. All Nikon cameras below the D750 do not allow aperture control in live view or video shooting.

      Dan Watson Thank u Dan, exactly! That's why I'm waiting for 7300 hopefully with live view controlling feature. 24-105 and 24-70 both are struggling for AF on 70d and 80d with noises! Hopefully new version of 24-105 doesn't!

    Hello Dan,
    I have a Canon t5i and a 6D. Would the 80d be a good backup to my 6D or just a waste of money? Also, what are your thoughts on owing both a FF and cropped sensor cameras, too redundant or not?
    Thanks Dan!

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      If you are shooting video, the 80D would be a great backup to the 6D and I almost prefer it in many ways. There are plenty of times (like when you want autofocus in video) that you could pull it out. For photos, it would probably be a bit redundant and I doubt you would end up using it much if at all unless the 6D broke or something in which case the T5i could fill in. I don't mind having different sensor sizes in a 2nd camera as long as the cameras themselves make sense. I'll take cameras with full frame and m43 with me sometimes. It's the camera/features/lenses that drive my decisions there

      It doesn't look like Canon is about to come out with something revolutionary anytime soon so if you want to stay Canon, I would jump on it now. I think the 77D would be just fine. It's a massive upgrade in every way. Unless you are looking for a larger/heavier body with more controls, the 77D would be an improvement in every way. It's also on a nice sale: amzn.to/2xL9o4w

    could you tell me the difference between a STM and a USM lens? witch one is better on the 80d?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад +1

      STM is Canon's silent motor so you don't pick up the lens focusing, aperture changes, and image stabilization on internal camera mics. However, most STM lenses suck so unless you HAVE to have the silent operation, you are better off with other lenses. Canon has yet to put out high end STM lenses. USM is just Canon's normal high speed motor for autofocus.

    Hi Dan I'm a night time shooter do you think the iso at 6400 is better then the 70D I shoot night cityscapes ? Is the 80D on par with the Canon 7Dm2 at high iso at 6400 ? Thanks Dan

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      +Nemesis King RAW files on the 80D are just barely better looking to my eye than the 7Dm2 and about 2/3 of a stop better than the 70D but remember, the 80D has a higher resolution sensor. JPEG files look even better. This is clearly a difference but it isn't really night and day. If you were unhappy with the 70D, you will probably not be completely happy with the 80D but if you thought the 70D was good enough, the 80D would be even better. The biggest difference would be jumping to full frame.

If I go full frame I'm going to Nikon D750 : ) But I'm thinking the Canon 80D and the New Sigma 50-100 1.8 os . I have not used that one. I spent some time with the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and I really like that one. To me, I would not purchase the 24mm F2.8, especially if you already have an f2.8 zoom. Hey, so unfortunately Nikon simply does not have good autofocus in video at this point. Whether they develop something in the future, who knows. But for now, the Canon 80D or 7D Mark II would be the best options for video if you need autofocus. Unfortunately, the quality of video is not better, just the autofocus performance.

    Hi thanks for the videos.. I'm currently using T4i and just ordered the 80D online. Was wondering if it is a mistake buying it as they both are crop sensors or cancel the order and switch to 6d? I'm mostly using for family portrait and only I had trouble with T4i was for low light situations. I've been using it for 4 years.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад +2

      The 80D is enough of an upgrade that it is probably worth it. I'm not a fan of the 6D anyway and you would need to replace your lenses with full frame lenses. You should also consider the 7D Mark II if you are getting in to more professional work but the 80D is very good. But don't expect a night and day difference in low light situations. If you shoot in low light, make sure you have wide aperture lenses as well. Getting some F2.8 zooms and F1.4 primes will do wonders.

    Dan I agree sooo much with regards to using the live screen for stills... that autofocus plus the touch screen is amazing! I would buy it just for that if only it was full frame. I shoot a 6D and I end up using the live mode whenever my focus is critical (esp. with fast lens f1.2-2.0) and far from the center ... it's painfully slow to select the spot and focus though.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +3

      +DilPower Yeah, I'm really thinking the 80D is actually a better video camera than the 6D. Thanks to the new sensor, quality is pretty much identical and you get AF, touch screen, headphone jacks, and 60fps at 1080p

    • @DilPower
      @DilPower 8 лет назад +1

      +Dan Watson I agree 100 % ! I was comparing dynamic range 6D vs 80D on dpreview (www.dpreview.com/news/7168986570/canon-shows-dynamism-eos-80d-breaks-new-ground-for-canon-low-iso-dr) and damn the 80D looks good! (high ISO noise probably still favors the 6D I imagine though) I'm seriously torn... the only reason I shoot full frame is to get that narrow depth of field with my f 1.2-1.4 glass but it feels pretty lame when a camera that is considerably cheaper does pretty much everything else way better! The 6DmarkII and 5DmarkIV can't come soon enough. I really hope they feature dual pixel AF and touch screens together with new sensors!

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +1

      +DilPower It seems like duel pixel AF and a touch screen are pretty likely (though likely not articulating), but I'm not seeing any rumors of a 6DII coming out until March 2017 earliest and a 5D4 in September with availability 1-3 months after that so I think the 80D might be the best Canon option for a while.

    • @DilPower
      @DilPower 8 лет назад

      Dan Watson That's what I hear too... and it makes me wanna switch camp to the Sony A7. Touch screens are still lacking but eye focus/face detection are looking pretty fantastic (together with lock on autofocus tracking within the frame). Only problem is I'd have to sell all my dear Canon lens to have those features work. I went to try it in store and it doesn't work with the Metabones IV :(. I'd sorely miss those 50L, 85L and 135L if it came to selling them... the MC-11 from Sigma is looking promising but only with Sigma Art lens (which I guess means not the 85 1.4...).

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +2

      +DilPower The metabones IV has been updated and now works with more lenses (not sure about your specific ones though). I have used every Sony A7 series camera and I will say that while all focused pretty quickly, only the A7RII & A6300 were good/reliable enough to track my subjects. Ever other one missed with tracking but still focused well enough with still subjects.

    Hey Dan, I am learning portrait and wedding photography. I am also doing it professionally but always on rented equipment. Now i have collected some bucks to get my own gear. I would definitely buy a 5d m3 or m4 (after it's release) later on. But at present what do you suggest would be a better cam for me, 80d, 7dm2 or some other of the same range ?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      +vivek pabla I would go with the 7Dm2 for now...or maybe the Nikon D750 if you can shoot Nikon. The 7D2 is a great camera, built like a tank, has a pro level feel and feature set the only difference from the 5D3 style cameras being that it has a slightly smaller sensor and thus isn't quite as good above 6400ISO. The 80D while still great quality lacks the pro end body and feature set of the 7D2 and 5D3 and thus I wouldn't recommend it as much for fashion and wedding use. The Nikon D750 has a full frame sensor and splits the difference between the 7D2 and 80D as far as the body/features go. Thus it is good enough for what you are needing and does have the full frame sensor. The Canon 6D which is technically in the same category as the Nikon D750 is not nearly as good unfortunately so I would skip that one. Either go for the 7D2 or Nikon D750 and I would be fine with either.

      +vivek pabla Cool. On the video side, quality will be a bit better on the D750 but the autofocus is bad enough (in video) that the Nikon D750 will probably be manual focus only. If you need AF in video, the 80D is the only way to go right now.

      @learningcameras  5 лет назад

      Canon's efs lenses could use some updating for sure. They have a decent amount of inexpensive full frame capable lenses that are cheap as well but a bit old. The Sony A7III and Tamron 28-70 F2.8 is a tough combo to beat. Either camera will work well with these SD cards: amzn.to/2BBV7qX
      If you want good lenses for the 80D, the Sigma 18-35 F1.8, Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4, and Tamron 24-70 F2.8 are all better than Canon's kit lenses

      The a6500 did better for me than the a6300. If you shoot 4k on the a6300, it could overheat especially in hot or direct sunlight conditions, usually after 20 min of straight recording. The a6500 has been better than that. But if you shoot 1080p, you should not have overheating issues. Some firmware updates have helped

    Hello! First of all, thank you for all the videos! I want to know if there is any problem with the 80D mainboard like in the firsts canon 70D. I am an owner of a Canon 70D (for two years and a half) and it was the best camera but recently out of nowhere it shot down and the technical people said that it was a common problemn of that model, a problem with the mainboard. It could be really helpful for me if you now something about that, if the 80D has problemns with the mainboard also. Thank you! I look forward your response.

      Thanks. I am not aware of any issues. I don't own the camera anymore but I did have it for several months with no issues.

    Sorry Dan, although the DR is indeed better than 70D it is NO WHERE NEAR the D7200. I had a 60D and that never mattered to me because I don't push the shadows too much, if at all. But Canon lags a lot behind Nikon in DR.

      floex831 That is simply not true, i own both of these cams and have to say canon is a small bit behind nikon, but nor waaaaaaaaay worse...

    Awesome vid. Subscribed.
    I am looking for a camera that is great at stills and videos. 80D videos look soft and that's what is keeping me from buying it. How is the video quality of GH4 for photo and video. I need a camera that also can flip out screen so I can see while filming myself.
    Does the GH4 come with autofocus 50mm prime lens. how's it low light considering it has a smaller sensor than APSC.
    please let me know.
    thanks

      Thanks! Nothing right now meets what you are looking for. The GH4 will be worse than the 80D in low light and picture quality but it will be better for video quality with tons of detail. Autofocus is also better on the 80D. Panasonic has a 25mm F1.4 lens that will be equivalent to a 50mm since there is a larger crop factor. It's kind of a toss up between prioritizing video and photos. The Sony A6300 is another option but doesn't have a flip out screen but could use an external monitor on the hotshoe so you can view it.

    sony a6300 or eos 80d which one is a better option for cinematography

    • @learningcameras

      A6300 with the exception that it can overheat after 20+ min. If that is an issue for you, look elsewhere (maybe the Panasonic G85).

    Dan, how is the dynamic range in video mode compared to the GH4/G7 and whatever else you might like to compare it to? ;)

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +1

      +Hammerhaus Kennel It's not bad in your normal picture profiles but all of those other cameras have either Cine D which is a flat profile (A7s also has flat profiles) or full on log recording which offers way more DR than you can get with a standard camera profile. In that sense the GH4/G7/A7s blow away the Canon offering more creative control and DR for editing in post.

      +Dan Watson Thank you very much! I was considering giving the 80D a try because of the unbelievable autofocus in video, but I think I will just stick to my GH4 for now. With the native lenses the GH4's autofocus is actually pretty useable in many circumstances, especially if you don't use 4K and keep the depth of field reasonably deep. I often prefer 1080p60 for my wide shots on the glidecam or whatever, so I guess the GH4 will do for now if the 80D's image and dynamic range can't hang. Tough call whether to try one or not... :-/

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      +Hammerhaus Kennel It would be difficult to go from a GH4 to an 80D for sure and I wouldn't. Let's just hope that Panasonic has some awesome autofocus improvements in a GH5 which hopefully could be introduced this year.

      I guess I'll start looking instead for a 70-200 2.8 ISii to go on my Metabones XL, unless you want to talk me out of that too... LOL!

    which one is good to buy 80d or 7d mark II

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      Technically the 7D Mark II is a better version of the 80D. If you are shooting sports, wildlife, or need a camera that can take a beating, get the 7D Mark II without a doubt. If none of those fit you, you might make do with the 80D. Quality will be very similar either way though.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      The 7D Mark II has more advanced options for customization especially in the focus system which is much more advanced on the 7D2

    Hi Dan, can the 80D use LP-E6 batteries? or just LP-E6N?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      It will work with the E6 but you SHOULD get the E6N. They are slightly larger and have higher current draws. The E6 could reduce how many shots you can take in a second.

    • @AndresArosemena
      @AndresArosemena 8 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply. I already have 10 LP-E6 for my 7dM2 (which now no longer works) that's why I would like to buy the 80d with the included LP-E6N battery but also use my 10 LP-E6 batteries. Fortunately I will use the 80d mostly for video so the lower shots per second wouldn't be so much of a problem. Will I have some kind of issue un video mode using LP-E6 batteries?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +1

      Nope, you should be good with the E6 batteries.

      Basically identical quality to the 80D for video although I think it may have more limited bitrate options
