My first impressions after upgrading 70D -> 80D : - 60fps Full HD ? Nice to meet you, buddy - C1 & C2 ? Great ! So I'm setting C1 as my standard 24fps cinematic look with Servo AF, in ALL-I (Higher Resolution) and C2 as my slow motion mode 60fps, no Servo AF for the moment, in IPB because no choice.. -> Then I could still do whatever I want in the Manual mode for photography :P, so cool Next step, installing the Cinestyle profile, then testing those kickass lenses I'm waiting for.. :P
Audio levels can be controlled on the 80D while recording video using manual audio control by pressing the Q button. Both the audio level and the headphone level can be controlled either by using the touch screen or the top dial.
Dylan Roberts it is a very good camera. I don’t have it now because I bought the 6 D MK II. It’s a true work horse and very good in low light. I just posted another video yesterday morning with some broll you can check out near the end of the video. I’ve been using this for about a year and a half now.
Thanks for this video. I've had my 80D for a while now and I wasn't aware about some of the settings you pointed out. :) Very helpful and informative. :)
For photography, I like using TV mode being able to control shutter speed easily, but I am new to video and don't know how to use it for filmography. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this video! I just bought an 80D last week and am going to the F1 race here in Austin this next week and planned on taking some video. These tips should help immensely.
Hi Grant... Many thanks. Videos on this subject often tend to confuse the viewers but this one really hleped me out with the settings. Best wishes from here in India.
I am in a PAL region. However, I noticed NTSC has more options and includes 24 fps. It may be better to set it on this option as default as video editing software can convert to PAL later.
Been checking you for some time now. Just subscribed. Just got a 80D to go with my gh4. All this started when I took a GoPro to NZL in March '15. Coming back next Feb/March '17. I'll be checking your audio vid for the 80D. Currently live in Santa Cruz Calif. Love NZL!!
Hope you enjoyed NZ with the GoPro, apart from the headphone jack monitoring on the 80D its pretty much the same as the 70D and have done a few videos on that on this channel. Cheers
Really really great video James! Recently upgraded from Canon T5i to Canon 80D and loving it so far. Sitting in my car now about to go shoot a sit down video and I’m looking forward to seeing how these great settings will improve he already amazing quality video this powerful camera already shoots! Thanks again!
it doesn't matter about NTSC and PAL, they were relevant for analog TV signal. Now a days monitors and TV will broadcast both frequencies. In the digital world, there is no place for PAL and should never be used.
We shoot weddings in the Uk which is PAL...... We also thought lets just shoot in NTSC and get 60fps and get smoother slow motion !! Great outside but wait until you shoot indoors under electrical lights and you get a "Flickering" video due to the wrong frequence :(
I just bought one and started to make videos on my channel, you should check them out to see the quality of the Canon80D, I can tell I haven't regret buying this badboy :) I'm hyped to check out your stuff
TheLocal same here! Took a few hundred pics already and learning more as i go. Its a great camera and im happy with it :) ill check out your channel too bro!
Thank you very much. Very helpful. But everytime my camera is off it changes the mic volume setting by default. Is there a way to permanently store the recording volume for a custom setting
Thank you for the Video. Just picked up my 80D and realized that my quality wasn't as good as others but was using manual. About to head to Sydney and do my 2nd ever travel vlog so will try these settings.
when I got my 80d it blurred the background the first time I used it. Now it doesnt and I didnt change any settings I can get it to blur the background in my videos. What do I do?
Awesome, nice and straight forward.I live in sunny Nelosn, just bought the 80d.Looking forward to getting into and learning about the camera etc.Cheers Joe
This might be a silly question, but here it goes. I put your settings onto my camera. When I left the dial on M (manual) the screen was just black. no light, I filmed (I think) the red light was flashing but no movie. Then I changed the dial to Auto and I could see the screen again and made a video. But don't know whether I was filming in manual or auto.
Hi Grant, thank you for the video. Can you suggest an CHEAPER alternative for battery backup for shooting 7-8 hours, apart from buying more canon batteries? some people suggest some power banks which are able to power up the camera for a long time. Any thought for 80D?
Thank you so much. This looks okay. But most of the times when shooting outside, there is no provision for Ac power source..I have seen some people using an external power suply (just like mobile power bank, connected to a battery shaped dc coupler). But dont know which product they use and which model is compatible with 80D. I want to thank you for all the amazing tutorial videos. They are very helpful.
Thanks buddy. Its March 2019, I have just bought 80d for shooting indoor close videos for my RUclips channel. As I am very new with DSLR, please suggest me a video settings. My configuration: canon 80d+18-135 USM, under softbox lights. Suggestions from anyone will help me a lot.
SAFWAN a magic boy I shoot with the 80D with the 18-55mm kit lens. I shoot in Manuel mode at 60fps 1080 in MP4 files. You can adjust your white balance by rotating the wheel when ur recording or about to record. Hope this helps.
So all these settings are for shooting in Manual mode and the variable setting is the ISO which is set to Auto to maintain correct exposure. What happens to the Shutter and Aperture settings when you change from Manual to say Aperture priority or Shutter priority?
Firstly, thanks very much to Mr Johnston for this very helpful video; much appreciated. Secondly, Mr Speers, you are correct; I noticed, too. The problem might be that cards' labelling is confusing. There may be two speeds shown (as there are in this case). The lesser speeds - shown in a circle - are 1-10, with 10 being best. The greater speeds (UHS Class, shown in a "U") are 1 to 3 - with 3 being the best. NB if the "U" symbol is missing the card is not the fastest UHS standard. The Canon 80d Manual (I kept mine!) stipulates Class 10 (Lesser speeds) or better for MP4 videos but UHS Speed 3 or better (when available) for recording in MOV - the (mainly) Apple format. So, Mr Johnston's card is fine, if recording in MP4, but under-powered if recording in MOV. NB Both MOV and MP4 are similar (lossy) standards - record in whichever one likes and has the video editing software for. But, as I use PCs not Macs and like an easier life, I record in MP4, so I do not need the fastest, most expensive cards.
Grant Just hired a 80D for three months. Am I mistaken or can you only view video through the LCD and not the viewfinder(shock horror!) when recording? Mike in Oz
Yes thats unfortunately true as it is in most DSLR cameras as they have to lock the mirror up and shoot video in live view mode which means you cant use the optical viewfinder.
I'm a beginner and just purchased the cannon 80d. What additional recommendations do you suggest? I'll be using the camera for recording basketball games, vloging, action pictures and videos
Jachi Lens depends on your budget but I highly recommend you to get a great sd card and a good microphone as the rode videomicro as it is really small and lightweight! If you can afford a way to stabilize your camera, look it up on RUclips for a cheap but good way to do so. Also, with the 80d, consider having a wide angle lens as it has a crop sensor (does a magnification of 1.6x ,so a 100mm lens becomes a 160mm.)
This camera doesn’t have in body image stabilization, only some lenses have image stabilization. The battery life however is amazing. Almost 1,000 shots per battery life.
+kipling1957 I don't know what it's official native ISO is but I would guess at around 100 to 160 ISO. I always try and run it as low as possible ie iso100
As soon as you tossed the manual, I subscribed.
LOL! Me too. That's my kind of guy. Hello from locked-down London.
Hahaha.
Many Many Thanks For Your Video . I am Purchase 80d for Our music video shooting.
Thank u sir!
Good vid Grant. No fluff just straight into it. Well done.
Had no idea that there were different quality SD cards. Great video! Thanks for making It!
Great info'. It would be nice to actually see the differences these settings gave by watching videos with comparisons to different settings.
Thank you very much!! Very helpful and easy to follow!!

Great tutorial. It was quick and didn't waste any time. I'm new to Canon so this was quite a help.
Hi Grant... Many thanks. Videos on this subject often tend to confuse the viewers but this one really hleped me out with the settings. Best wishes from here in India.
good job..
This was very very helpful, thank you
Thanks!
The manual throw got you a subscribe LMAO thank you for this!
very useful Sir... I set up my 800D settings following this video... Got a nice result...
Grant, Thanks for sharing your settings with us. Appreciate it!
Lifesaver, honestly. Thank you
And don't forget to charge your camera.
I am in a PAL region. However, I noticed NTSC has more options and includes 24 fps. It may be better to set it on this option as default as video editing software can convert to PAL later.
You don't need PAL unless you record onto a PAL VHS and display it on a tube screen.
All flat screen TVs use 60hz (or higher) panels and electronics.
Great video. learned how to shoot more of a cinematic movie with these settings.
Get off Manual! 😂😂😂
Congratulation, great video.
A very good, nice thorough review! I'm liking my 80D camera! :)
Thumbs up!
Awesome info presentation on this camera - straight to the process without all the self endulgent babble 👍

Sitting in my car now about to go shoot a sit down video and I’m looking forward to seeing how these great settings will improve he already amazing quality video this powerful camera already shoots! who is James?
I would have preferred you suggesting the All-I setting for higher bitrates. I think it is a noticable difference.
+Michael Wieczorek it really depends upon what you want to do with the footage in post and I struggle to see much difference. Cheers
Sir you have helped me a ton, thumbs up and subbed ! Looking forward to more
I use the NTSC mode even though I'm from Asia just for the 60fps option.
Samreen Art same here! I love doing slo-mos in post!
Samreen Art I am having 50fps and I am on pal is that the reason for not having 60fps ?
it doesn't matter about NTSC and PAL, they were relevant for analog TV signal. Now a days monitors and TV will broadcast both frequencies. In the digital world, there is no place for PAL and should never be used.
We shoot weddings in the Uk which is PAL...... We also thought lets just shoot in NTSC and get 60fps and get smoother slow motion !! Great outside but wait until you shoot indoors under electrical lights and you get a "Flickering" video due to the wrong frequence :(
then you drop the shutter speed to 1/50
I like the way you throw that manual book 🙈
Thanks, very informative.
Nice .
Very detailed. Love the hands on tutorial.

Thank you very much. Very helpful. But everytime my camera is off it changes the mic volume setting by default. Is there a way to permanently store the recording volume for a custom setting
In terms of vlogging what do you think would be the best settings

+Cheryl Mason You have to manually set the exposure in M mode using your Aperture and ISO settings
Thank you!

Thank you for this beautiful video
very very usful . thank you
Thanks a bunch. :)
Very helpful thanks for sharing
Awesome I've learned a lot from you!
7:45 I hate how you just jumped into this menu without showing how to get there, I can’t find how to get there
Am I the only one who noticed the UHS class 1 card he pulled out of his camera right after saying Canon recommends UHS class 3 or higher?
Firstly, thanks very much to Mr Johnston for this very helpful video; much appreciated.
Secondly, Mr Speers, you are correct; I noticed, too. The problem might be that cards' labelling is confusing. There may be two speeds shown (as there are in this case). I know this was posted a year ago, but mine is an HC 1 and is 80MB's from Sandisk.
Yes, u r the only one who noticed Class 1, as it is indeed class 10.. look closely
Thank you so much
Loved it
You throw away the manual again, so funny mate, when is going to be the course available ?
Ha - the course is up and live at learn.grantjohnston.me/p/shoot-better-video-with-the-canon-80d
Cheers
Great video! Any suggestions on settings for video recording fire dancers at night?
I'm getting the 'Full Frame 80D", for low light pedformance.
Darth Kenobi, what do you mean "Full Frame 80D"? it's still crop 1.6 ...
Alex & Lily The 6D mark 2
i live in asia, and i select ntsc... just because 60fps, what concerns are there? since i only upload to youtube or share via mobile devices?
+Chuck there really shouldn't be any concerns
Grant Johnston will this be good for film making high quality film
Nice Thank you 👌👍

u must need a tripod, prime lens(50mm),vloging gear
Get an sd card with at least U3 class, that has a wirtespeed at least 80mb/s
How is video stabilization for this camera...and battery life?
This camera doesn’t have in body image stabilization, only some lenses have image stabilization. The battery life however is amazing. Almost 1,000 shots per battery life.
Thanks for this
excellent
What is the native ISO of the 80D - important for maximum dynamic range and minimal artefacts, so I believe.
+kipling1957 I don't know what it's official native ISO is but I would guess at around 100 to 160 ISO. I always try and run it as low as possible ie iso100
