Excellent review!! Thank you=) Dontcha just hate weakass breaks! Lol.... I haven't played in years so mine would definitely be worse than that=)
Thanks for low light single AF test.. That puts things in its place for me.
These latest reviews you do are superbly produced... I never feel tempted to skip past boring waffle... And I realise how much effort it must take to make the videos so snappy and feature packed so thank you! :)
best review video ever! finally someone shows difference between cameras and compare them to each other. I am about to by my first camera and Idk nothing about it, you clear things out for me. gonna get myself 80d just because it's brand new and it's ok for beginners. keep doing what you doing, as I said it's the best review ever. tnx again
You guys are great. You've helped me so much with my photography over the last 12 months Thankyou! and I've bought all your books to try and give a little back😉
Seeing a camera without a lens, sensor open to the elements makes my skin crawl.
i felt that too
Nice work guys, great review. Nice Tesla by the way!
Awesome video I am in the market to purchasing a dslr my eyes were set on the 70D but after seeing this video I'm sold on the 80D
thank you keep rocking,
Great review man. I really appreciate you and your wife taking the time to do these videos!
Tony, I truly believe you are at your best when you do these type of detailed, in-depth, and wide coverage camera comparisons. I just love and enjoy them so much. Please continue to do these type of videos. I and many other RUclipsrs look forward to watching them. It makes my computer time worth-while.
I've had my Canon 80D two weeks now and just received my EF 70-200mm f2.8 L is iii lens ready to shoot nice review sir!!! learned alot.
Roderick McCray I’d be interested to hear your review after some cuddle up time with your new lens 😬
Roderick McCray PS yeh, this couple do great tuts eh? 👍

I watched a lot of review and comparison videos of the 80d and 6d mkii but this is the first one that covered the autofocus system extensively as well as low light capability.
I think you helped me decide on the 80d (love the touchscreen focusing) to supplement or replace my 600d (Rebel T3i?) that just doesn't cut it anymore in low light situations.
The focusing system just throws itself out of the window at very low evening light and "handshake secure" 1/60th. Can't compensate with higher ISOs because I think anything above 400/800 ISO looks very noisy even with a 50mm/f1.8
Thank you!
FutureChaosTV right now I shoot with a Canon T6. I've been looking at 80D Vs 6d mark II videos all day. Idk, I still may go with the Mark II because of the full frame aspect
Ha, showing off that self-driving mode on the Tesla, eh?
Whoa. Even Tony Northrup cannot get the Sony mirrorless to focus!
And I thought it was my idiocy that spoiled the low light shots I tried with my A6000.
I think I sell it if I find a buyer.
+Martti Suomivuori We've always believed the tales of a6000's amazing focusing system were myths... check our reviews of that camera: northrup.photo/reviews/cameras/sony/a6000/
The Nikon d5500 is great and has great battery life great for just taking photographs and I enjoy useing it
hey tony i bought an 80d , and now i think its worth the money i paid, . thanks for your videos on 80d , now i have some ideas in what should i buy
thanks! don't forget to watch the tutorial at sdp.io/tutorial. Enjoy!

If only the a6300 had a fully articulating touch screen. : ( It would be the perfect camera for me. The 80D lacks 4k video but the auto focus is amazing. Maybe the 90D will be the prefect camera with 4k video. Or maybe the Gh5 will have amazing auto focus and be the camera to beat. For now I have a Panasonic G7 and love it.
22:59 hidden audio bonus track, just like a 90's CD! :D
Dude, that 8 ball break was awesome. That means you win! Super rare!

I just baught a canon 70d, and i just swapped my services for a bunch of filters. i have a macro lens and a telephoto one, both canon. last week i took a nature pic with it that honesty as a noob, i thought was breathtaking. i am excited by looking at things differently now. Even if its just a little.
Holy crap this video was super good. Exactly what I needed to make the leap and go for the 80D. Thank you
The utter silence after 15:45 is really powerful :)
it appears I need a collection of cameras to be satisfied.
Man I'm still loving my 70D and not ready to upgrade yet and certainly not enough delta to get an 80D.
maybe a 90d then?
There's always the 1dxmklll
Help! I cant seem to shoot a still while in video mode (not shooting actual video just like using the screen to view from). I was able to do this all the time with my 70d and now I can't with my 80d. What am I doing wrong?
Excellent video Tony, Very well done thank you. I was wondering how the old 7D compared since there so cheap now.
nikon d750 is full frame and has a 3d focus tracking for sports/portraits that is amazing. I got mine on ebay for 1400
Isn't that camera full of manufacturing problems? It sure is a super cool/great camera, but it is often in the media because of faults.
Henrik Karlsson the only issue i knew off when buying it was something about a purple hue appearing in certain video shots. I've actually started using this for video over my panasonic gh4 and have taken thousands of photos with 0 problems. The 3d focusing mode has made me like it for photos more than any other camera ive ever used too.
PeglegMedia I have the D750 excellent stills and very nice video codec - but for run and gun video (focusing fast) I'm supplementing it with a 80D. The touch screen and dual pixel AF is a dream to me.
Tony, GREAT review, very thorough. Question: how is it that the 80D was far superior to the a6300 when focusing in low light for stills, but the results were reversed in video?
+Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Thanks, Hugh! We used the viewfinder for stills focusing (using the 80D's DSLR-style phase detect focusing) but live view for video focusing (using the 80D's on-sensor dual-pixel AF).
+Tony Northrup To confirm, then: the 80D is better at stills focusing while the a6300 is better for video? Fascinating if true!
I have been looking for a comparison of the 6D and the 80D, Not having a lot of luck. I find they often compete for the same photographers' dollar, a comparison would be helpful.
I'm not sure what you guys did because a6300 is double the ISO range and capability of 80D and the AF, especially on the eye is arguably the fastest AF...
Nice summary, I have always admired the 70D and even more so the 80D. I consider them to be the ultimate Daddy cameras for covering the family documentation on all fronts very well. But already being in the Nikon system I am glad my D7200 is still the king of crops for IQ that you didn't show in comparisons. I love mine more than ever now that I own a Sigma 18-35 I can see all the 24MP goodness.
Would have been nice if the 80D had 4K capability.
+Marlon “MarlonPTY” Torres Yeah, lack of 4k is the only thing stopping this from being the best video camera available.
So if I don't care about 4k, then this is the perfect camera for the price range?
Even if had lot of people(indie, vloggers) wouldn't use it because editing post production is pain in the a**. For the same reasons i switched to lesser resolution.
Thanks for the excellent reviews on the 80D. Its 2019 & I’ve just upgraded from my trusty 60D.
Thank you, also, for moving out of that irritating shadow at 3:16 😆✌️
7d Mark ii is a great wildlife and birds in flight camera and has solid dust and moisture sealing. Geared for pro to semi pro wildlife/ sports shooters.
Honestly I am loving the a6300. The af in low light is not the best but in good light it is great. I love having the slog profiles too, the 4k is so crisp. My biggest disappointment in it is the lack of a touch screen and still no usb 3.0 or type C. I mean USB 3.0 has been around for 8 years now, Sony needs to just upgrade from 2.0. Tethering raw files is so slow. I love the camera though, Don't miss my a7 or g7 haha
skatertwig26 still really happy with it? I can't decide on it or the 80D, it'll be my first camera, but I also want to try shooting video and using LUTs, which I don't think the canon can do very well
I don't think the Nikon D5500 is the correct competitor to the 80D. The Nikon 7200, at $1096.95 on BH would be the closer competitor.
+Danny B. I agree, it would make for a better comparison
+Danny B. The price of the D7200 is closer to the 80D, but the D7200 lacks the articulating touch screen. That, to me, is the 80D's defining feature. Functionally the D7200 is more similar to the 7D series.
If you have questions about the comparison, you can ask. We showed the results for the D7200's focusing test, and the D7200 image quality is very slightly better than the D5500 (though the sensors are really similar).
+Tony Northrup I can live with that reasoning. ;-) Have a pleasant Sunday.
I own the D7200 and highly recommend that camera. I had an option of either getting the 70d but the image quality was the deciding factor for me to go with d7200. I use it mainly for photography and not video. it is still manageable for video.
who cares about the screen unless your primary purpose is for video.
anyways consider your budget, used is probably better.
nikon D5500 doesnt has HSS sync, and no AF motor :( and it's plastic body, no weather sealed. 80D is much better in those things.
A lot of things are wrong with this video, beginning with comparing the 80D to a Nikon D5. What about a Canon 1Dx II?
I was surprised when tony said the 80D was not focusing well at f/8 with an adapter. The 80D has 27 AF points. He claimed the 7D2 was better, which only has 1 f/8 AF point. He immediately debunked the 7D2 AF system superiority claim when the 80D totally outperformed the 7D2 in low light.
This is the first video of your I've watched. Some of the cameras you compare the 80d to are a lot more expensive. not really sure how that helps.
I am a 70D owner and I love the camera, but I am going to upgrade to the 80D for some of it's video options and better shadow recovery
Extremely informative! Great case studies, really blown away by all the effort you two put into these reviews. 80D sound like not a bad choice at all! Thanks
Was thinking of upgrading my Canon 760D to the 80D for my astrophotography videos. I'm after faster video frame rate @ 1080p and keen on slow-mo speed ramps. 60fps @ 1080p vs 24fps @ 1080p means I can ramp down. I'm not sure if its worth it. I can get 50fps on the 760D but it's 720p. The Sony seems nice but the lack of articulating screen is a right deal breaker. I might rent an 80D and see if it really makes a difference.
Thanks for the review
Thanks for the detailed video you guys put a lot of work into your reviews, I am now happy I didn't upgrade my 70d for my daughters softball (slow action sport). I just upgraded to a full frame Sony a7ii, maybe I will upgrade the 70d to a 7d markii someday since theres always sales and rebates on them.
Great Video. I was comparing and watching so many different reviews, I found yours is the best. I had Canon t4i then t6s. Now Canon 6d. I love 6d result, specially works so well in low light and big time difference in colors and sharpness. I love Canon 6D. I guess, if you ever buy Full Frame, you will never go back to crop sensor. Pictures are wider and sharper, vivid & crisp. I wanted to thank you once again to make such great video, helping people like me to pick right body.
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup I'm getting the 80D because I need an all around camera for shooting pics AND video of our classic cars. Could you please tell me what your recommended lenses would be? I'm going crazy trying to figure all this out! Thanks so much for your help and your amazing videos.
7fps isn't ideal for ducks! Mallards, wood ducks and shovelers flap their wings at approximately 7 wingbeats per second at level flight, so you will often end up with burst images that have almost the exact same wing posture. Goldeneyes and Surf Scoters flap faster around 9 beats so you will probably get some more variation in posture. Shooting in intermittent bursts does help though.
I actually want the best in 3 I choose that I can keep shooting for next 4-5 years and will be doing mix kind of stuff.
Should only be six more months until we can finally have our 5D Mark iV, aren't you excited Tony!?!? I'm hoping I make enough in the next six months off of just my photography so it pays for its self. The 80D dynamic range being better than the full frame cameras is good news. Should be even better on the full frame. However, it's never been a big issue to me. But that 1DX Mark ii focus system -3EV, dual pixel AF, hopefully with touch screen, and 4k.... I'll be set the next four years! It'll be cool to see the next 5DSR as well, I don't think they will wait 4 years on it. The market has changed.
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup The 80D does have free manual single AF point selection. Your statement in the Video is wrong.
Tony you have shown one sample image showing a comparison between image taken from Canon 80d and Canon 6d showing marked difference in clarity in Canon 6d as Full frames have better low light performance. But please tell whether there is marked difference in image quality between Canon 80d and Canon 6d even when there is adequate light..
2:50 You say that with 6D you get access to more lenses. Wrong. In 6D you can use EF lenses and in 80D you can use EF- and EF-S lenses
+juhva It would be more fair to say you get more access to "native" lenses on the EF system with a 6D. I believe that was the intention. If you compare EF-S to EF, considering with EF lenses you aren't even using all the glass on a crop body...
So, the 80D basically fixed all the minor annoyances I had with my 70D except for better controls. Waiting for a good deal before I upgrade.
Do u recommend the 70D or 80d?
80D for sure if you have yet to buy.
3 reasons:
1. Better DR sensor.
2. A couple of body improvements (extra custom mode and 100% VF)
3. A couple of firmware updates (Exp comp. available in manual mode + auto ISO, intervalometer, etc...)
And that's only for stills; I'm not knowledgeable enough on video to weigh in on that front.
Only advantage for 70D over 80D is price, period. I'm waiting for the inevitable price drop on the 80D to buy one.
Pritzl
I got the 80D since some days and it is great! Check my Last Video and see the quality that this camera can takes
+SeniorLeb, glad you're enjoying it.
the nicest and best reviewers on RUclips, as a noob their advice is greatly appreciated cheers for all the great vids guys!
+Dave Allen Thanks and you're welcome!
I think that's an understatement @Tony, the 6D autofocus SUCKS! (I own one lol) One thing I noticed with the 80D (I tried one in store) is that the dual pixel is sooo fast it can be used for stills very well (except fast moving I guess). I love the touch screen for that... plus more precise focus in live view (I miss focus all the time at 1.2-1.8 on my silly 6D). Perfect camera? 80D with a FF sensor :D!
Well, I would like to see a more specific test of the AF features of the 80D versus the 7D Mark II.
Attach the Canon 100-400mm II lens with the Canon 1.4x extender III to each, giving a reach of 896mm.
The Canon 7D Mark II works at f8 with a single AF point.
The Canon 80D works at f8 with up to 27 AF points.
For wildlife photography, especially birds in flight, where a single AF point comes up short, 27 AF points is a welcome change.
People were excited about the 7D Mark II working with a single AF point at f8, with the Canon 1.4x extender.
The Canon 80D, working with 27 AF points, with the 1.4x extender iii, and it’s newer lenses like the 100-400mm II, is huge.
Maybe huge enough to sell the Canon 7D Mark II, with its many excellent features, and buy the Canon 80D.
896mm with up to 27 AF points, is a game changer, for many amateur wildlife photographers.
At 6:02
I have 80d and it does have single point focus. Just a heads up. I like your videos, they are helpful.
Wouldn’t you get access to more lenses with a crop sensor? You can get EFs and EF lenses instead of just EF.
Why are you comparing it to the D5500 and not the D7200? The D5500 is T6i/750D territory and I don't think an articulating touchscreen alone makes much of a difference. I have recommended the D7200 to someone who wants the 80D so a comparison between the two would be helpful.
+Sigma Octantis The articulating touchscreen makes a pretty huge difference in how you use the camera. If you don't need it, instead compare the D7200 and 7D Mk II.
+Tony Northrup The 80d and the d7200 are about the same price The 7d is not
I currently have the 7d mk ii and love it, I use it for filming and mostly sports. I'd love to upgrade to the 1d X mark ii later on.
fantastic review! YOur effort is really second to none.
+overTIMe -- VERY TRUE "OT". TINY and Chelsea do such a great job.
"...balls to my face." - Tony Northup
Sorry! :D
which one you will recommend for portrait photography- 1. Canon 80D 2. Sony A6500 3. Fujifilm XT3 ? please suggest, thanks in advance
I like your videos especially when Chelsea joins for balanced reviews (haha). I’ve an 80d and use ef 70-200 (+1.4extender occasionally) for long shots and ef 100-400 for air shows. So, all the ef range of Canon ef glass is really open to apc cameras, not just ef-s lenses. And my ef-s 17-55 f 2.8 for dimly lit museums and ef-s 15-85 for street photography fit their purpose perfectly.
Going full frame in the canon line up means you have LESS lenses to choose from as the FF lensen fit on APS-C body, but the EF-s do not not on the FF bodies.
+Diggnuts I added an annotation to clarify this, but check sdp.io/ffcrop
Tony Northrup Right, but instead of clarifying it, this video just adds more myths and mistakes on top of this one. The crop-factor times aperture argument for instance is complete baloney.
Just spot meter with the same lens + setting on and C and FF body to see how this is uninformed tripe.
Don't be a Jared Polin...
At the 6:00 you contrast 7DMkII with the 80D saying the 80D lacks the single point AF option. Did it originally not have this. I bought an 80D in November and it has that option. That is how I have mine set up, with just the very center one active.
You say there is a bigger lens choice for the Canon 6d, surely the 80d will fit all the Canon ef lenses and efs lenses as opposed to the 6d which will only take the ef lenses?
Cheers
+Bostonpowercat Yes, but sdp.io/ffcrop
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup Thank you for the reply, that has cleared things up 👍👍
What should I get if I want to film HQ movies ??
Surely detail is important in low light video tests? As a camera could be trading detail for noise reduction.
Great video guys! You really helped me determine which camera of all these to buy (the 80d). The 6d mark ii and 5d mark iv won't be coming out till the end of 2016 or early 2017, and the 7d mark ii doesn't offer full hd @ 60fps. Either way I can't wait that long to upgrade.
I have a gh4 and I'm thinking about getting the 80d just for the autofocus during video since I shoot events it would be nice to put the canon on a glidecam and get great focus...
I just got canon 80D. I can get it to auto focus like 70D. for sample, if the
camera focus on my face and I put an object in front of me, it will
refocus on the subject then when I put the object down it will focus on
my face again by itself. Which setting should I set for it to be able to do that? Please help.
Hi, Thanks a lot for your review. But I dont know which oune I should buy. I'll film videos but I want to take some photos. I liked sony a6300 but many pepople use Canon... Can help me, please? Thanks!
I have shooted a lot of indoor sports with Canon 10 series cameras from different years. The lesson learned is that ISO performance is not good enough with 70-200 2.8 lens most of the time. You really need fullframe body to boost your ISO. I don't even see that grain in the pictures is the problem but colors seems to be quote washed out when you start pusing the ISO. For some reason recreating the colors in post processing seems to be really chanllenging and time consuming when picture is take in fluorecent light, I don't know why. If you still want to have good indoor sport pictures with Canon 10 serias the key is to take a lot of pictures. Once in the while there might be a decently focused one in the pack.
I wish every camera Review was just as good as this one, subscribed!
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup
I generally shoot birds and Wildlife and I have 7DMKII for that. I am considering a Backup body. Is 80D worth?
i want to buy new camera.. but I'm confused which camera should i buy for photography canon 80d or nikon d7200?? please suggest me as soon as possible?? and please compare both cameras canon 80d vs nikon d7200
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup, What do you think, what is the best 'all around' camera in 2017 in a budget of $1000 for body? For both family photography and video? 80D, a6300, G85/80 or something else?
Balls to face made me actually laugh out loud! Great vid - currently struggling to decide between the 80d, 77d and 6dmkII. Watched so many reviews and I am still torn!
And finally what you bought ?
Plot twist... I went for the Sony A7iii 🙈
@@BeckiLea oh really))) But it's a bit expensive))) And lenses are also not so cheap))
Mr. Faro Production I was able to save quite a bit on the purchase with some Sony cash back at the time so it evened things out a little. I don’t regret the purchase as it’s proven to be a work horse! I think for my requirements any of the mentioned cameras would have done the trick though as a primary video shooter ☺️
@@BeckiLea Now I got your point))) It was great decision 👍👍👍 I subscribed to you and will learn those things which I don't know ))) If you don't mind of course)))
Can you please put the body protector cap on the camera's when you are not using them. This almost feels like someone scratching their nails on a chalkboard.
Hi Tony, great review, as usual. One point I am not sure I agree with you upon is the shadow noise compared to the D5500. The 80D shadows were lighter to begin with! This means you should have pushed the D5500 shadows to match and then see how noise compared. Why push the shadows in both cameras equally rather than matching them visually? In other words, if you are going to push the D5500, say 3 stops, only push the 80D 2.5 stops because it will end up the same brightness anyway. In real life we aim for a correct exposure, not just to copy what we did on another camera. Great overall review though and I'm definitely buying an 80D. I love watching your videos.

Why don't just click on this link and see what you want
www.dpreview.com/news/7168986570/canon-shows-dynamism-eos-80d-breaks-new-ground-for-canon-low-iso-dr
All reviewers seem to agree on this. The 80d is improved significantly in this regard. But couldn't close the gap entirely.
Tony's makeshift test brought forth the same conclusions as people doing more controlled tests.
That being said the 80d is indeed a great all-rounder. If it only had C-log and 4k. It would be in back-order all the way to Japan
+1barnet1 Thanks for the link. I'll take a look in the morning when I'm at my PC. It's 12.30am here. I knew the 80D was still a little behind the D7200, wasn't sure about the D5500.
cooloox
Same difference.
The D5500 is the equiv. of the D7200 in that aspect.
It isn't in terms of autofocus(TTL). Something Canon really got right with the 80d. Not 7d mk2 right but definately as good if not better in some ways as the D7200.
That said Tony is reporting ridiculously good numbers for the D5. Considering the D500 uses the same hardware for AF i think there is a new King of Apsc sports coming soon.
Which camera is better Canon 80D or Nikon D5600 for video/vlogging and landscape photography and why?
Showing off self-driving tesla huh?
+Alex D. I actually didn't notice that at all.. wow lol
+X-Ghost- 22 thanks! My dad is hilarious and takes great pleasure in teasing me 😊
+Chelsea Northrup Honestly, I couldn't focus on anything he was saying for over 45 seconds while his hands weren't on the wheel...I was too tense and mortified. :(
Loool "flippey screen" 😂 by the way thank you for this informative video!
I'm sorry but, isn't D7200 the direct competitor of 80D? D5500 and 80D are in different levels.
+Josue Ramirez Nikon doesn't have a direct competitor to the 80D. The D7200 is a similar price but functionally it's very different. Functionally, the D7200 is more like the 7D series of cameras, because it lacks the articulating touch screen and adds a thumb stick and more weather sealing.
I did compare the D7200 for the focusing test, however. If you're curious about image quality, the D7200 is very slightly better than the D5500 images shown in the video.
+Tony Northrup Thanks for you response, so the D7200 has a better weather sealing than the D80? Currently I own the D7100 and am thinking on moving to a more video friendly camera, like Canon 70D or 80D. But for photo, I'm actually very happy with my Nikon. Your videos really help to see the strengths and weakness. Thanks in advance and hope you and your team keep doing such a great job.
The claim that a 6D will have greater access to lenses is a bit backwards, given that both the 80D and 6D are compatible with all of the same fullframe lenses while the 80D enjoys compatibility with the EF-S line, as well. I use a 5DIV and L glass for all of my pro work, but I really enjoy the 80D and EF-S lenses for travel where I value the smaller size, lighter weight, and -- in areas prone to theft -- less cost and vulnerability.
With Sony a6400 in the market, which one is the worth buy, Sony a6400 or Canon 80d, focusing more on the still photography.
You have that cool chill genuine personality! Trustworthy! I had to subscribe! and I don't easily do so!
I still cannot decide between 80D and 6D...
Picture quality at low light / high ISO from the 6D and usability from the 80D would it be...
Had the same decision. For me 80D - won! 6D is great camera, but 2012 year...
Rolling shutter: So 70d surprisingly did great, and all the others did horrible. Something about the composition of the 80d shot made me really hate that shot even if a6300 and GH4 seems technically equally bad. The a6300 composition made it much less obvious. Which is the thing about rolling shutter, it hurts some images not all.
For example: when you are driving and talking (mr safety hazard), you are the the focus and outside is blurred. Since our brains isn't processing he outside, a rolling shutter issue in that shot probably wouldn't matter at all.
Great review as always Tony & crew!
What about moire? Does 80d still has this problem like 70d? I recently
shoot some video interviews with 70d and having moire on the suit and
shirt was a terrible thing. I heard that 7d mark ii doen't have this
problem! So what about 80d?
Loved to low light test ... very important feature for me! I guess DSLRs focusing is still much superior to mirrorless in that respect.
does canon 80d has proximity sensor on view finder that automatically detect face near the screen turn the screen off?
Guys which camera is better for both stills and video 77D or Sony a6300. Im stuck in choosing Canon 77d with 17-50 2.8 lens + 70-300 lens (canon or tamron) or Sony a6300 + 50mm OSS and cheap wide angle manual chines lens. I like canon tilt display and the option for cheap 70-300 lens vs the sony 70-300 expensive one way more, and that there is no zoom on good price like 28-70 f 2.8 IS the Sony a6300 much better in low light ? Thanks !
is there any reason why the Pentax k-3 mark2 wasnt included in this? I feel like it occupies the same territory
cheers for that reply you've inspired me to get a d500 just bought your book it's fantastic! Dave from rainy England!
Will the 70 or 80D take a Canon 1.4 MIII extender and still able to focus through the viewfinder? As allegedly the 7DMII can?
You spoiled us with much betters reviews. Even dough I appreciate the work! Thanks.
T&C - Yet another fantastic (and ever improving) video! Thanks for all of your awesome work! Can't say enough great stuff about you! BTW, the Sony a6300 was slow to focus in low light in your example because you used the especially cheap & slowest focusing lens for it, the SEL50F18. It's insanely sharp (per DXOMark and my own experience) and fantastic in every way except one: focusing speed! I got mine used but mint for around $200 on E-Bay. Try the SEL35F18 for faster focus.
You get more focussed shots with the D5 compared to all other cameras... seems like a fair comparison.... :-| What is this, an advert for Nikon?
for the video gh4 kicks their ass. it has true 4k not uhd, also hdmi output 10bit 4.2.2, focus peak, zebra, variable frame rate etc all for 1200$
