I met a landman once. She described herself as a "surface rights negotiator." It was at the dawn of cellular telephony, she had a phone in her car (a Dodge Stealth she picked up one day when she was having her Charger serviced.) She told me "it costs $300 for me to pick up that phone" - it was a very effective way of ensuring that people didn't bother her with trivial stuff that would wait until business hours. I suspect that this movie has a much to do with the real work of a landman as it does with early childhood education. And as for oil patch work being employment being "job of last resort", where I live it is "job of first preference" and completely distorts the rest of the labor market - when the patch is hiring, all your good people leave. In short, what the trailer implies about the oil business is a steaming crock. But I'm sure it's entertaining!
