“There are no survivors of a mass shooting, there’s different levels of victims.”
Damn. That’s a bitter pill to swallow but is so true. I personally have somewhat mixed feelings about the death penalty, although I’m not exactly against it. But watching this trial I thought to myself, if there ever was a case that execution is appropriate, it’s this one. If this horrific crime and aggravating factors didn’t merit a death sentence, I don’t know what would.
I was heartbroken watching the families faces when the verdict was read. I lost a loved one to gun violence in 2012 and that kind of death is such a unique grief. Having someone actually stolen from you by another person is a very specific type of pain and it doesn’t get better. The anger is an overwhelming layer of the grief and can consume you. I have so much love and respect for these families and I hope that the end of this chapter makes way for a new one that brings about some semblance of peace.

What many people don't realize is that some of the people charged and convicted by the courts that are sentenced to death are actually innocent. They are sometimes exonerated by DNA, or witness. Many times it's too late to reverse the decision. It completely changed my perspective about the justice system. Do we deal with the 9 murders via death penalty, or allow the one innocent have a chance to prove his innocent giving the 9 murderers life instead. It's an easy choice for me. I, at the same time, completely understand the parent's reaction and wouldn't expect anything different.

I’ve worked in special education in schools and I am a school psychologist for almost 25 years now. There were NO mitigating factors in my opinion and I understood very well all the expert evaluations. I watched this entire trial. I’m so sorry this turned out the way it did. This precedent that’s now been set is sickening. This mom and dad are so wonderfully spoken and I’m sorry they lost a son who sounded like a top notch teacher that I would have been honored to work with. I work in a high school and I have already made several practice plans of how I would keep my students safe if this were to occur in our school. So sad that one or more on the jury thought there was an excuse for anyone to commit a crime like this.

To the families. As a reformed former inmate who knows how the inside politics works behind bars, let me give you some peace and solace on this most disturbing day. Once Nikolas Cruz reaches a prison yard, he will be housed with other prisoners doing very long prison terms, many with nothing to lose. They know that being able to take out a very unpopular inmate will bring them the notoriety and international fame they seek, while also knowing that they'll be providing the families the street justice that will be much more vicious and painful than any state sponsored death penalty ever could be. He'll be stuck in the jugular bleeding out naked, without dignity, on a filthy and dirty prison shower room floor. Justice will be served and Nikolas Cruz will die much sooner than the 20 plus years it would take IF he had been sentenced to death and housed on death row where he'd be protected against other inmates. And it will be far more painful and humiliating, than the electric chair or lethal injection could ever be.

It's hard to see the anger and hate that still lives in all of these parents, because I know that if that had been my daughter, who is a teenager now, I would live with a boiling hate inside of me and I would react just the same if not worse as these parents are. When these school shootings happen like the last one in Uvalde I am always so angry when the shooter the coward shoots himself and therefore evades any sort of justice but then sometimes I think maybe it's better that they do that, maybe it's better that they're dead and gone so the parents don't have to go through the painfully slow and unfair justice system only to have an outcome like this where the animal gets to live out the rest of his life. Maybe it is just better that they end their pathetic lives to save not only the parents years of trials but also to save tax payer money! but then again I have never had to go through something has horrible as this so I have no idea which would be better, if there would be any "better" case scenario in these events.
